Calculated event rates for Axion Detection via Atomic and Nuclear Processes

The possibility of detection of 5.5 MeV and 14.4 keV solar axions by observing axion-induced nuclear and atomic transitions is investigated. The presence of nuclear transitions between spin-orbit partners can be manifested by the subsequent de-excitation via gamma ray emissions. The transition rates can also be studied in the context of radiative axion absorption by a nucleus. The elementary interaction is obtained in the context of the axion-quark couplings predicted by existing axion models. Then these couplings will be transformed to the nucleon level utilizing reasonable existing models, which lead to effective transition operators. Using these operators we calculate the needed nuclear matrix elements employing wave functions obtained in the context of the nuclear shell model. With these ingredients, we discuss possibilities of experimental observation of the axion-induced nuclear gamma-rays. In the second part, we will examine the axion-induced production of X-rays (axion-photon conversion) or ionization from deeply bound electron orbits. In this case, the axion electron coupling is predicted by existing axion models, no renormalization is needed. The experimental signal is the observation of directly produced electrons and/or the emission of hard X-rays and Auger electrons, following the de-excitation of the final atom. Critical discussion is made on the experimental feasibility of detecting the solar axions by using multi-ton scale NaI detectors.

Supernova neutrino scattering off Gadolinium odd isotopes in water Cherenkov detectors

In this work, the supernova neutrino(SN) charged-current interactions with Gd odd isotopes (A=155 and 157) are studied. We use measured spectra and the quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM) to calculate the charged current response of odd Gd isotopes to supernova neutrinos. Flux-averaged cross-sections are obtained considering quasi-thermal neutrino spectra.

Supernova Neutrino Scattering off Gadolinium Even Isotopes in Water Cherenkov Detectors

Neutrinos in water can be detected thanks to several reactions. The most important one is the inverse beta decay $\barν_{e}+p \rightarrow n+e^{+}$ . The detection of 2.2 MeV from neutron capture on free protons is very difficult. The feasibility of Gadolinium (Gd) doping in water Cherenkov detectors essentially reduces background signals and enhances the sensitivity to neutrino detection. In this work, the supernova neutrino charged-current interactions with the most abundant Gd even isotopes (A=156,158 and 160) are studied. We use measured spectra and the quasiparticle random phase approximation to calculate the charged current response of Gd isotopes to supernova neutrinos. Flux-averaged cross sections are obtained considering quasi-thermal neutrino spectra.

Heavy sterile neutrino in dark matter searches

Sterile neutrinos are possible dark matter candidates. We examine here possible detection mechanisms, assuming that the neutrino has a mass of about 50 keV and couples to the ordinary neutrino. Even though this neutrino is quite heavy, it is non relativistic with a maximum kinetic energy of 0.1 eV. Thus new experimental techniques are required for its detection. We estimate the expected event rate in the following cases: i) Measure electron recoils in the case of materials with very low electron binding. ii) Low temperature crystal bolometers. iii) Spin induced atomic excitations at very low temperatures, leading to a characteristic photon spectrum. iv) Observation of resonances in antineutrino absorption by a nucleus undergoing electron capture. v) Neutrino induced electron events beyond the end point energy of beta decaying systems, e.g. in the tritium decay studied by KATRIN.
