Muon Collider Physics Summary

The perspective of designing muon colliders with high energy and luminosity, which is being investigated by the International Muon Collider Collaboration, has triggered a growing interest in their physics reach. We present a concise summary of the muon colliders potential to explore new physics, leveraging on the unique possibility of combining high available energy with very precise measurements.

The physics case of a 3 TeV muon collider stage

In the path towards a muon collider with center of mass energy of 10 TeV or more, a stage at 3 TeV emerges as an appealing option. Reviewing the physics potential of such muon collider is the main purpose of this document. In order to outline the progression of the physics performances across the stages, a few sensitivity projections for higher energy are also presented. There are many opportunities for probing new physics at a 3 TeV muon collider. Some of them are in common with the extensively documented physics case of the CLIC 3 TeV energy stage, and include measuring the Higgs trilinear coupling and testing the possible composite nature of the Higgs boson and of the top quark at the 20 TeV scale. Other opportunities are unique of a 3 TeV muon collider, and stem from the fact that muons are collided rather than electrons. This is exemplified by studying the potential to explore the microscopic origin of the current $g$-2 and $B$-physics anomalies, which are both related with muons.

Probing the muon g-2 anomaly with the Higgs boson at a Muon Collider

We point out that heavy new physics contributions in leptonic dipole moments and high-energy cross-sections of lepton pairs into Higgs bosons and photons are connected model-independently. In particular, we demonstrate that a muon collider, running at center-of-mass energies of several TeV, can provide a unique test of new physics in the muon g-2 through the study of high-energy processes such as mu+ mu- -> h gamma. This high-energy test would be of the utmost importance to shed light on the long-standing muon g-2 anomaly as it is not affected by the hadronic and experimental uncertainties entering the current low-energy determination of the muon g-2. Furthermore, we show that the current bound on the muon electric dipole moment can be improved by three orders of magnitude, down to few x 10^-22 e cm.

Hunting for CP-violating axionlike particle interactions

The impact of axion-like particles (ALPs) on the search of permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of molecules, atoms, nuclei and nucleons is systematically investigated. We classify first the full set of CP-violating Jarlskog invariants emerging in the ALP effective field theory (EFT) containing operators up to dimension-5. Then, we evaluate the leading short-distance effects to the EDMs up to two-loop order. The high sensitivity of EDMs to CP-violating ALP interactions is emphasised exploiting both the current and projected experimental sensitivities.

Hunting for ALPs with Lepton Flavor Violation

We examine the low-energy signatures of axion-like particles (ALPs) in lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes. By using a dimension-5 effective Lagrangian, we compute the most general ALP contributions to LFV decays of leptons and mesons. The provided expressions are valid for any choice of ALP mass and couplings. We explore the complementarity of different processes, identifying specific patterns to be experimentally tested. Constraints on LFV couplings are derived from existing data and prospects for forthcoming experiments are also discussed. As a by-product, we revisit the possibility of a simultaneous explanation of the observed discrepancies in the muon and electron $g-2$ through ALP interactions.

Implications of scalar and tensor explanations of $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$

We investigate the implications of scalar and tensor operators proposed to accommodate the hints of lepton flavor universality violation in charged-current $B$-meson decays. We show that these scenarios unavoidably induce chirality enhanced contributions to charged lepton magnetic moments and Yukawa couplings. By using an effective field theory approach we quantify in a model independent way the connection of the $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ anomaly with the tau $g-2$ and the Higgs decay $h\to ττ$, which can offer an alternative to test these scenarios. Concrete New Physics models giving rise to our setup will be illustrated.

Low-energy Effects of Lepton Flavour Universality Violation

The persisting anomalous data in semileptonic B-decays point towards New Physics models exhibiting large sources of Lepton Flavour Universality Violation. In this work we generalise previous studies by considering frameworks which include an enlarged set of semileptonic four-fermion operators invariant under the SM gauge group, with New Physics affecting mainly the third generation. We derive the low-energy effective Lagrangian including the leading electroweak corrections, mandatory to obtain reliable predictions. As a particularly interesting case, we analyse the scenario where the dominant New Physics effects are encoded in the Wilson coefficient C_9, as favoured by global fit analyses of b -> s data. We find that also in this case the stringent experimental bounds on Z-pole observables and tau decays challenge a simultaneous explanation of charged and neutral-current non-standard data.

On the Importance of Electroweak Corrections for B Anomalies

The growing experimental indication of Lepton Flavour Universality Violation (LFUV) both in charged- and neutral-current semileptonic B-decays, has triggered many theoretical interpretations of such non-standard phenomena. Focusing on popular scenarios where the explanation of these anomalies requires New Physics at the TeV scale, we emphasise the importance of including electroweak corrections to obtain trustable predictions for the models in question. We find that the most important quantum effects are the modifications of the leptonic couplings of the W and Z vector bosons and the generation of a purely leptonic effective Lagrangian. As a result, the tight experimental bounds on Z-pole observables and tau decays challenge an explanation of the current non-standard data. We illustrate how these effects arise, by providing a detailed discussion of the running and matching procedure which is necessary to derive the low-energy effective Lagrangian.

Revisiting Lepton Flavour Universality in B Decays

Lepton flavour universality (LFU) in B-decays is revisited by considering a class of semileptonic operators defined at a scale Lambda above the electroweak scale v. The importance of quantum effects, so far neglected in the literature, is emphasised. We construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian taking into account the running effects from Lambda down to v through the one-loop renormalization group equations (RGE) in the limit of exact electroweak symmetry and QED RGEs from v down to the 1 GeV scale. The most important quantum effects turn out to be the modification of the leptonic couplings of the vector boson Z and the generation of a purely leptonic effective Lagrangian. Large LFU breaking effects in Z and tau decays and visible lepton flavour violating (LFV) effects in the processes tau -> mu ll, tau -> mu rho, tau -> mu pi and tau -> mu eta^(') are induced.

CP Violation Tests of Alignment Models at LHCII

We analyse the low-energy phenomenology of alignment models both model-independently and within supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios focusing on their CP violation tests at LHCII. Assuming that New Physics (NP) contributes to K-Kbar and D-Dbar mixings only through non-renormalizable operators involving SU(2)_L quark-doublets, we derive model-independent correlations among CP violating observables of the two systems. Due to universality of CP violation in Delta F=1 processes the bound on CP violation in Kaon mixing generically leads to an upper bound on the size of CP violation in D mixing. Interestingly, this bound is similar in magnitude to the current sensitivity reached by the LHCb experiment which is starting now to probe the natural predictions of alignment models. Within SUSY, we perform an exact analytical computation of the full set of contributions for the D-Dbar mixing amplitude. We point out that chargino effects are comparable and often dominant with respect to gluino contributions making their inclusion in phenomenological analyses essential. As a byproduct, we clarify the limit of applicability of the commonly used mass insertion approximation in scenarios with quasi-degenerate and split squarks.

Indirect determinations of the top quark mass

We give a complete analysis of indirect determinations of the top quark mass in the Standard Model by introducing a systematic procedure to identify observables that receive quantum corrections enhanced by powers of $M_t$. We propose to use flavour physics as a tool to extract the top quark mass. Although present data give only a poor determination, we show how future theoretical and experimental progress in flavour physics can lead to an accuracy in $M_t$ well below 2 GeV. We revisit determinations of $M_t$ from electroweak data, showing how an improved measurement of the $W$ mass leads to an accuracy well below 1 GeV.

Lepton Flavour Violation in Composite Higgs Models

We discuss in detail the constraints on partial compositeness coming from flavour and CP violation in the leptonic sector. In a first part we present a formulation of partial compositeness in terms of a flavour symmetry group and a set of spurions, whose background values specify the symmetry breaking pattern. In such a framework we construct the complete set of dimension-six operators describing lepton flavour violation and CP violation. By exploiting the existing bounds, we derive limits on the compositeness scale in different scenarios, characterised by increasing restrictions on the spurion properties. We confirm that in the most general case the compositeness scale should lie well-above 10 TeV. However, if in the composite sector mass parameters and Yukawa couplings are universal, such a bound can be significantly lowered, without necessarily reproducing the case of minimal flavour violation. The most sensitive processes are decays of charged leptons either of radiative type or into three charged leptons, muon to electron conversion in nuclei and the electric dipole moment of the electron. In a second part we explicitly compute the Wilson coefficients of the relevant dimension-six operators in the so-called two-site model, embodying the symmetry breaking pattern discussed in our first part, and we compare the results with those of the general spurion analysis.

Charged Slepton Flavor post the 8 TeV LHC: A Simplified Model Analysis of Low-Energy Constraints and LHC SUSY Searches

Motivated by the null results of LHC searches, which together with the Higgs mass, severely constrain minimal supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, we adopt a model-independent approach to study charged slepton flavor. We examine a number of simplified models, with different subsets of sleptons, electroweak gauginos, and Higgsinos, and derive the allowed slepton flavor dependence in the region probed by current LHC searches, and in the region relevant for the 14 TeV LHC. We then study the impact of the allowed flavor dependence on lepton plus missing energy searches. In some cases, flavor dependence significantly modifies the reach of the searches. These effects may be even larger at the next LHC run, since for the higher masses probed at 14 TeV, larger flavor mixings and relative mass splittings are compatible with low-energy constraints. Retaining the full lepton flavor information can increase the sensitivity of the searches.

Lepton Flavor Violation in Flavored Gauge Mediation

We study the anatomy and phenomenology of Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) in the context of Flavored Gauge Mediation (FGM). Within FGM, the messenger sector couples directly to the MSSM matter fields with couplings controlled by the same dynamics that explains the hierarchies in the SM Yukawas. Although the pattern of flavor violation depends on the particular underlying flavor model, FGM provides a built-in flavor suppression similar to wave function renormalization or SUSY Partial Compositeness. Moreover, in contrast to these models, there is an additional suppression of left-right (LR) flavor transitions by third-generation Yukawas that in particular provides an extra protection against flavor-blind phases. We exploit the consequences of this setup for lepton flavor phenomenology, assuming that the new couplings are controlled by simple U(1) flavor models that have been proposed to accommodate large neutrino mixing angles. Remarkably, it turns out that in the context of FGM these models can pass the impressive constraints from LFV processes and leptonic EDMs even for light superpartners, therefore offering the possibility of resolving the longstanding muon g-2 anomaly.

Gauge Mediation beyond Minimal Flavor Violation

We study a minimal modification of Gauge Mediation in which the messenger sector couples directly to the MSSM matter fields. These couplings are controlled by the same dynamics that explain the flavor hierarchies, and therefore are parametrically as small as the Yukawas. This setup gives rise to an interesting SUSY spectrum that is calculable in terms of a single new parameter. Due to large A-terms, the model can easily accommodate a 126 GeV Higgs with a relatively light SUSY spectrum. The flavor structure depends on the particular underlying flavor model, but flavor-violating effects arise dominantly in the up-sector and are strongly suppressed in Delta F =2 observables. This strong suppression is reminiscent of what happens in the case of wave function renormalization or Partial Compositeness, despite the underlying flavor model can be a simple U(1) flavor model (which in the context of Gravity Mediation suffers from strong Delta F =2 constraints). This structure allows to account for the recent observation of direct CP violation in D-meson decays.

Flavoured Naturalness

We show that a large mixing between the right-handed charm and top squarks (i) is allowed by low-energy flavour constraints; (ii) reduces the experimental bound on the stop mass; (iii) has a mild, but beneficial, effect on fine-tuning; (iv) leads to interesting signatures at the LHC not presently investigated by experiments. We estimate the current bound on the stop mass, in presence of flavour mixing, and discuss the new collider signatures. The signal in the t anti-c (c anti-t) + missing E_T channel is large enough that it can be immediately searched for experimentally, while the signature with same-sign tops and missing E_T requires a luminosity upgrade of the LHC.

Correlation between the Higgs Decay Rate to Two Photons and the Muon g - 2

In the context of minimal supersymmetry with slepton mass universality we find that an enhancement in h \rightarrow gamma gamma by at least 40%, as hinted by present data, implies a deviation of the muon anomalous magnetic moment by exactly the right amount to explain the observed anomaly. The enhancement in h \rightarrow gamma gamma selects a light stau with large left-right mixing, a light Bino, and heavy higgsinos. The corresponding parameters are compatible with thermal dark matter, predict small deviations in h \rightarrow Z gamma and h \rightarrow tau tau, and measurable violations of lepton universality.

Model-independent constraints on new physics in b --> s transitions

We provide a comprehensive model-independent analysis of rare decays involving the b --> s transition to put constraints on dimension-six Delta(F)=1 effective operators. The constraints are derived from all the available up-to-date experimental data from the B-factories, CDF and LHCb. The implications and future prospects for observables in b --> s l+l- and b --> s nu nu transitions in view of improved measurements are also investigated. The present work updates and generalises previous studies providing, at the same time, a useful tool to test the flavour structure of any theory beyond the SM.
