Quantum Synchronization

Natural and engineered classical systems are replete with examples of synchronization, understood as the adjustment of rhythms of physical systems. Such synchronization is at the heart of the stability of several classical technologies, such as mechanical bridges and electrical networks. Given the advent of quantum simulation and computation technologies, it is natural to study a quantum analogue of synchronization and explore novel applications. This review surveys synchronization in few and many-body quantum systems, measures that quantify them, and their applications to quantum technologies.

Controlling emergent dynamical behavior via phase-engineered strong symmetries

Symmetry constraints provide a powerful means to control the dynamics of open quantum systems. However, the set of accessible control parameters is often limited. Here, we show that a tunable phase in the collective light-matter coupling of a cavity QED system induces a phase-dependent strong symmetry of the Liouvillian, enabling dynamical control of the open quantum system evolution. We demonstrate that tuning this phase substantially reduces the critical driving strength for dissipative phase transitions between stationary and non-stationary phases. We illustrate this mechanism in two experimentally relevant cavity QED settings: a two-species ensemble of two-level atoms and a single-species ensemble of three-level atoms. Our results establish phase control as a versatile tool for engineering dissipative phase transitions, with implications for quantum state preparation.

Hierarchical time crystals

Spontaneous symmetry breaking is one of the central organizing principles in physics. Time crystals have emerged as an exotic phase of matter, spontaneously breaking the time translational symmetry, and are mainly categorized as discrete or continuous. While these distinct types of time crystals have been extensively explored as standalone systems, intriguing effects can arise from their mutual interaction. Here, we demonstrate that a time-independent coupled system of discrete and continuous time crystals induces a simultaneous two-fold temporal symmetry breaking, resulting in a hierarchical time crystal phase. Interestingly, one of the subsystems breaks an emergent discrete temporal symmetry that does not exist in the dynamical generator but rather emerges dynamically, leading to a convoluted non-equilibrium phase. We demonstrate that hierarchical time crystals are robust, emerging for fundamentally different coupling schemes and persisting across wide ranges of system parameters.

Universal relaxation speedup in open quantum systems through transient conditional and unconditional resetting

Speeding up the relaxation dynamics of many-body quantum systems is important in a variety of contexts, including quantum computation and state preparation. We demonstrate that such acceleration can be universally achieved via transient stochastic resetting. This means that during an initial time interval of finite duration, the dynamics is interrupted by resets that take the system to a designated state at randomly selected times. We illustrate this idea for few-body open systems and also for a challenging many-body case, where a first-order phase transition leads to a divergence of relaxation time. In all scenarios, a significant and sometimes even exponential acceleration in reaching the stationary state is observed, similar to the so-called Mpemba effect. The universal nature of this speedup lies in the fact that the design of the resetting protocol only requires knowledge of a few macroscopic properties of the target state, such as the order parameter of the phase transition, while it does not necessitate any fine-tuned manipulation of the initial state.

Quantum Synchronization of Twin Limit-Cycle Oscillators

Quantum synchronization has been a subject of intensive research in the last decade. In this work, we propose a quantum Li\'enard system whose classical equivalent features two limit cycles to one of which the system will converge. In the quantum case, both limit cycles coexist in a single steady state. Each of these limit cycles localizes to a distinct phase if coupled to an external drive: one quantum state can thus be assigned two phases. Furthermore, coupling two such oscillators leads to the simultaneous appearance of synchronization and a synchronization blockade. To shed light on this apparent paradoxical result, we introduce finer measures of quantum synchronization.

Generation of entanglement and non-stationary states via competing coherent and incoherent bosonic hopping

Incoherent stochastic processes added to unitary dynamics are typically deemed detrimental since they are expected to diminish quantum features such as superposition and entanglement. Instead of exhibiting energy-conserving persistent coherent motion, the dynamics of such open systems feature, in most cases, a steady state, which is approached in the long-time limit from all initial conditions. This can, in fact, be advantageous as it offers a mechanism for the creation of robust quantum correlations on demand without the need for fine-tuning. Here, we show this for a system consisting of two coherently coupled bosonic modes, which is a paradigmatic scenario for the realization of quantum resources such as squeezed entangled states. Rather counterintuitively, the mere addition of incoherent hopping, which results in a statistical coupling between the bosonic modes, leads to steady states with robust quantum entanglement and enables the emergence of persistent coherent non-stationary behavior.

Chaos in Time: A Dissipative Continuous Quasi Time Crystals

While a generic open quantum system decays to its steady state, continuous time crystals (CTCs) develop spontaneous oscillation and never converge to a stationary state. Just as crystals develop correlations in space, CTCs do so in time. Here, we introduce a Continuous Quasi Time Crystals (CQTC). Despite being characterized by the presence of non-decaying oscillations, this phase does not retain its long-range order, making it the time analogous of quasi-crystal structures. We investigate the emergence of this phase in a system made of two coupled collective spin sub-systems, each developing a CTC phase upon the action of a strong enough drive. The addition of a coupling enables the emergence of different synchronized phases, where both sub-systems oscillate at the same frequency. In the transition between different CTC orders, the system develops chaotic dynamics with aperiodic oscillations. These chaotic features differ from those of closed quantum systems, as the dynamics is not characterized by a unitary evolution. At the same time, the presence of non-decaying oscillations makes this phenomenon distinct from other form of chaos in open quantum system, where the system decays instead. We investigate the connection between chaos and this quasi-crystalline phase using mean-field techniques, and we confirm these results including quantum fluctuations at the lowest order.

Exotic synchronization in continuous time crystals outside the symmetric subspace

Exploring continuous time crystals (CTCs) within the symmetric subspace of spin systems has been a subject of intensive research in recent times. Thus far, the stability of the time-crystal phase outside the symmetric subspace in such spin systems has gone largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the effect of including the asymmetric subspaces on the dynamics of CTCs in a driven dissipative spin model. This results in multistability, and the dynamics becomes dependent on the initial state. Remarkably, this multistability leads to exotic synchronization regimes such as chimera states and cluster synchronization in an ensemble of coupled identical CTCs. Interestingly, it leads to other nonlinear phenomena such as oscillation death and signature of chaos.

Symmetries and Synchronization Blockade

Synchronization blockade refers to an interferometric cancellation of quantum synchronization. In this manuscript, we show how the choice of synchronization measure and Hamiltonian symmetries affect the discussion of synchronization blockade. Using counting principles, we prove a general theorem that synchronization blockade cannot be observed in an $N-$level system when the coherent state used to define the diagonal limit-cycle state is in the full $SU(N)$ group. We present several illustrative examples of synchronization blockade in multi-level systems and prove that information-theoretic measures of synchronization can also observe synchronization blockade-like behavior by an appropriate choice of the set of limit cycle states.

Measurement Induced Continuous Time Crystals

Strong measurements usually restrict the dynamics of measured finite dimensional systems to the Zeno subspace, where subsequent evolution is unitary due to the suppression of dissipative terms. Here we show qualitatively different behaviour due to the competition between strong measurements and the thermodynamic limit, inducing a time-translation symmetry breaking phase transition resulting in a continuous time crystal. We consider a spin star model, where the central spin is subject to a strong continuous measurement, and qualify the dynamic behaviour of the system in various parameter regimes. We show that above a critical value of measurement strength, the magnetization of the thermodynamically large ancilla spins develops limit cycle oscillations. Our result also demonstrates that a coherent drive is not necessary in order to induce continuous time-translation symmetry breaking.

Steady-State Tunable Entanglement Thermal Machine Using Quantum Dots

We present a solid state thermal machine based on quantum dots to generate steady-state entanglement between distant spins. Unlike previous approaches our system is controlled by experimentally feasible steady state currents manipulated by dc voltages. By analyzing the Liouvillian eigenspectrum as a function of the control parameters, we show that our device operates over a large voltage region. As an extension, the proposed device also works as an entanglement thermal machine under a temperature gradient that can even give rise to entanglement at zero voltage bias. Finally, we highlight a post-selection scheme based on currently feasible non-demolition measurement techniques that can generate perfect Bell-pairs from the steady state output of our thermal machine.

Observation of quantum phase-synchronization in a nuclear spin-system

We report an experimental study of phase-synchronization in a pair of interacting nuclear spins subjected to an external drive in nuclear magnetic resonance architecture. A weak transition-selective radio-frequency field applied on one of the spins is observed to cause phase-localization, which is experimentally established by measuring the Husimi distribution function under various drive conditions. To this end, we have developed a general interferometric technique to directly extract values of the Husimi function via the transverse magnetization of the undriven nuclear spin. We further verify the robustness of synchronization to detuning in the system by studying the Arnold tongue behaviour.

Seeding crystallization in time

We introduce the concept of seeding of crystallization in time by studying the dynamics of an ensemble of coupled continuous time crystals. We demonstrate that a single subsystem in a broken-symmetry phase acting as a nucleation center may induce time-translation symmetry breaking across the entire ensemble. Seeding is observed for both coherent as well as dissipative coupling, and for a broad range of parameter regimes. In the spirit of mutual synchronization, we investigate the parameter regime where all subsystems are in the broken symmetry phase. We observe that more broadly detuned time crystals require weaker coupling strength to be synchronized. This is in contrast to basic knowledge from classical as well as quantum synchronization theory. We show that this surprising observation is a direct consequence of the seeding effect.

Role of Coherence and Degeneracies in Quantum Synchronisation

Progress on the study of synchronisation in quantum systems has been largely driven by specific examples which resulted in several examples of frequency entrainment as well as mutual synchronisation. Here we study quantum synchronisation by utilising Liouville space perturbation theory. We begin by clarifying the role of centers, symmetries and oscillating coherences in the context of quantum synchronisation. We then analyse the eigenspectrum of the Liouville superoperator generating the dynamics of the quantum system and determine the conditions under which synchronisation arises. We apply our framework to derive a powerful relationship between energy conservation, degeneracies and synchronisation in quantum systems. Finally, we demonstrate our approach by analysing two mutually coupled thermal machines and the close relationship between synchronisation and thermodynamic quantities.

An India-specific Compartmental Model for Covid-19: Projections and Intervention Strategies by Incorporating Geographical, Infrastructural and Response Heterogeneity

We present a compartmental meta-population model for the spread of Covid-19 in India. Our model simulates populations at a district or state level using an epidemiological model that is appropriate to Covid-19. Different districts are connected by a transportation matrix developed using available census data. We introduce uncertainties in the testing rates into the model that takes into account the disparate responses of the different states to the epidemic and also factors in the state of the public healthcare system. Our model allows us to generate qualitative projections of Covid-19 spread in India, and further allows us to investigate the effects of different proposed interventions. By building in heterogeneity at geographical and infrastructural levels and in local responses, our model aims to capture some of the complexity of epidemiological modeling appropriate to a diverse country such as India.

Generalized Measure of Quantum synchronization

We present a generalized information-theoretic measure of synchronization in quantum systems. This measure is applicable to dynamics of anharmonic oscillators, few-level atoms, and coupled oscillator networks. Furthermore, the new measure allows us to discuss synchronization of disparate physical systems such as coupled hybrid quantum systems and coupled systems undergoing mutual synchronization that are also driven locally. In many cases of interest, we find a closed-form expression for the proposed measure.
