Phase transitions and spin dynamics of the quasi-one dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ in a longitudinal magnetic field

By combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet BaCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ in a longitudinal magnetic field applied along the magnetic anisotropy axis, which is also the chain direction. The external field closes the excitation gap due to the magnetic anisotropy, inducing a transition from the N\'eel ordered state to an incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave phase. If the field is increased further, another transition into a transverse antiferromagnetic phase takes place at 9 T due to the competition between longitudinal and transverse correlations. We numerically and experimentally show that the model of XXZ chains connected by a weak interchain interaction well reproduces this transition. We also calculate the dynamical susceptibility and demonstrate that it agrees quantitatively with inelastic neutron scattering measurements. In contrast to the abrupt change of magnetic ordering, the spectra do not change much at the transition at 9 T, and the spin dynamics can be described as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. We also refine the modeling of BaCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ by including a four-site periodic term arising from the crystal structure which enables to account for an anomaly of the magnetic susceptibility appearing at 19 T as well as for the anticrossing observed in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra.

Orbital selective coupling in CeRh$_3$B$_2$: co-existence of high Curie and high Kondo temperature

We investigated the electronic structure of the enigmatic CeRh$_3$B$_2$ using resonant inelastic scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy in combination with $ab$ $initio$ density functional calculations. We find that the Rh 4$d$ states are irrelevant for the high-temperature ferromagnetism and the Kondo effect. We also find that the Ce 4$f$ crystal-field strength is too small to explain the strong reduction of the Ce magnetic moment. The data reveal instead the presence of two different active Ce 4$f$ orbitals, with each coupling selectively to different bands in CeRh$_3$B$_2$. The inter-site hybridization of the |J=5/2,Jz=+/-1/2> crystal-field state and Ce 5$d$ band combined with the intra-site Ce 4$f$-5$d$ exchange creates the strong ferromagnetism, while hybridization between the |J=5/2,Jz=+/-5/2> and the B $sp$ in the $ab$-plane contributes to the Kondo interaction which causes the moment reduction. This orbital selective coupling explains the unique and seemingly contradictory properties of CeRh$_3$B$_2$.

From hidden-order to antiferromagnetism: electronic structure changes in Fe-doped URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

In matter, any spontaneous symmetry breaking induces a phase transition characterized by an order parameter, such as the magnetization vector in ferromagnets, or a macroscopic many-electron wave-function in superconductors. Phase transitions with unknown order parameter are rare but extremely appealing, as they may lead to novel physics. An emblematic, and still unsolved, example is the transition of the heavy fermion compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ (URS) into the so-called hidden-order (HO) phase when the temperature drops below $T_0 = 17.5$K. Here we show that the interaction between the heavy fermion and the conduction band states near the Fermi level has a key role in the emergence of the HO phase. Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that while the Fermi surfaces of the HO and of a neighboring antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase of well-defined order parameter have the same topography, they differ in the size of some, but not all, of their electron pockets. Such a non-rigid change of the electronic structure indicates that a change in the interaction strength between states near the Fermi level is a crucial ingredient for the HO-to-AFM phase transition.

Solitonic excitations in the Ising anisotropic chain BaCo2V2O8 under large transverse magnetic field

We study the dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-Heisenberg antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8 under a transverse magnetic field. Combining inelastic neutron scattering experiments and theoretical analyses by field theories and numerical simulations, we mainly elucidate the structure of the spin excitation spectrum in the high field phase, appearing above the quantum phase transition point mu0Hc ~ 10 T. We find that it is characterized by collective solitonic excitations superimposed on a continuum. These solitons are strongly bound in pairs due to the effective staggered field induced by the nondiagonal g tensor of the compound, and are topologically different from the fractionalized spinons in the weak field region. The dynamical susceptibility numerically calculated with the infinite time-evolving block decimation method shows an excellent agreement with the measured spectra, which enables us to identify the dispersion branches with elementary excitations. The lowest energy dispersion has an incommensurate nature and has a local minimum at an irrational wave number due to the applied transverse field.

Precise control of $J_\mathrm{eff}=1/2$ magnetic properties in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ epitaxial thin films by variation of strain and thin film thickness

We report on a comprehensive investigation of the effects of strain and film thickness on the structural and magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films of the prototypal $J_\mathrm{eff}=1/2$ compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by advanced X-ray scattering. We find that the Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ thin films can be grown fully strained up to a thickness of 108 nm. By using X-ray resonant scattering, we show that the out-of-plane magnetic correlation length is strongly dependent on the thin film thickness, but independent of the strain state of the thin films. This can be used as a finely tuned dial to adjust the out-of-plane magnetic correlation length and transform the magnetic anisotropy from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) behavior by incrementing film thickness. These results provide a clearer picture for the systematic control of the magnetic degrees of freedom in epitaxial thin films of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and bring to light the potential for a rich playground to explore the physics of $5d$-transition metal compounds.

Successive incommensurate spin orderings and excitations in multiferroic SrMnGe2O6

Anisotropic multiferroic properties of SrMnGe2O6 pyroxene single crystals were systematically investigated by means of magnetization, heat capacity, pyroelectric current measurement and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Single crystal neutron diffraction allows us to unambiguously reveal the presence of two incommensurate magnetic orderings: a non-polar amplitude-modulated collinear sinusoidal magnetic structure emerges at TN1=4.36(2)K followed by a polar elliptical cycloidal spin structure below TN2=4.05(2)K. Pyroelectric current measurements on single crystal confirm the appearance of a spontaneous polarization within the (ac) plane below TN2 associated with the latter magnetic symmetry through extended Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya mechanism. The magnetic phase diagram was calculated considering the three isotropic exchange couplings relevant in this system. The magnetic excitations spectra of SrMnGe2O6 measured by inelastic neutron scattering were successfully modeled using a set of exchange interactions consistent with this phase diagram.

Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid spin dynamics in the quasi-one dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$

Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet \bacovo\ in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a N\'eel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinless fermions in one dimension. We especially observe the rise of mainly longitudinal excitations, a hallmark of the unconventional low-field regime in Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet chains.

Linear magnetoresistance in the charge density wave state of quasi-two-dimensional rare-earth tritellurides

We report measurements of the magnetoresistance in the charge density wave (CDW) state of rare-earth tritellurides, namely TbTe$_3$ and HoTe$_3$. The magnetic field dependence of magnetoresistance exhibits a temperature dependent crossover between a conventional quadratic law at high $T$ and low $B$ and an unusual linear dependence at low $T$ and high $B$. We present a quite general model to explain the linear magnetoresistance taking into account the strong scattering of quasiparticles on CDW fluctuations in the vicinity of "hot spots" of the Fermi surface (FS) where the FS reconstruction is the strongest.

Bilayer splitting versus Fermi-surface warping as an origin of slow oscillations of in-plane magnetoresistance in rare-earth tritellurides

Slow oscillations (SlO) of the in-plane magnetoresistance with a frequency less than 4 T are observed in the rare-earth tritellurides and proposed as an effective tool to explore the electronic structure in various strongly anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional compounds. Contrary to the usual Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations, SlO originate not from small Fermi-surface pockets, but from the entanglement of close frequencies due to a finite interlayer transfer integral, either between the two Te planes forming a bilayer or between two adjacent bilayers. From the observed angular dependence of the frequency and the phase of SlO we argue that they originate from the bilayer splitting rather than from the Fermi-surface warping. The SlO frequency gives the value of the interlayer transfer integral $\approx 1$ meV for TbTe$_3$ and GdTe$_3$.

Helical bunching and symmetry lowering inducing multiferroicity in Fe langasites

The chiral Fe-based langasites represent model systems of triangle-based frustrated magnets with a strong potential for multiferroicity. We report neutron scattering measurements for the multichiral Ba3MFe3Si2O14 (M = Nb, Ta) langasites revealing new important features of the magnetic order of these systems: the bunching of the helical modulation along the c-axis and the in-plane distortion of the 120{\textdegree} Fe-spin arrangement. We discuss these subtle features in terms of the microscopic spin Hamiltonian, and provide the link to the magnetically-induced electric polarization observed in these systems. Thus, our findings put the multiferroicity of this attractive family of materials on solid ground.

Magnetic order in the frustrated Ising-like chain compound Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$

We have studied the field and temperature dependence of the magnetization of single crystals of Sr3NiIrO6. These measurements evidence the presence of an easy axis of anisotropy and two anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility. Neutron powder diffraction realized on a polycrystalline sample reveals the emergence of magnetic reflections below 75 K with magnetic propagation vector k ~ (0, 0, 1), undetected in previous neutron studies [T.N. Nguyen and H.-C zur Loye, J. Solid State Chem., 117, 300 (1995)]. The nature of the magnetic ground state, and the presence of two anomalies common to this family of material, are discussed on the basis of the results obtained by neutron diffraction, magnetization measurements, and symmetry arguments.

Magneto- to electro-active transmutation of spin waves in ErMnO3

The low energy dynamical properties of the multiferroic hexagonal perovskite ErMnO3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering as well as terahertz and far infrared spectroscopies on synchrotron source. From these complementary techniques, we have determined the magnon and crystal field spectra and identified a zone center magnon only excitable by the electric field of an electromagnetic wave. Using comparison with the isostructural YMnO3 compound and crystal field calculations, we propose that this dynamical magnetoelectric process is due to the hybridization of a magnon with an electro-active crystal field transition.

THz Magneto-electric atomic rotations in the chiral compound Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$

We have determined the terahertz spectrum of the chiral langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ by means of synchrotron-radiation measurements. Two excitations are revealed that are shown to have a different nature. The first one, purely magnetic, is observed at low temperature in the magnetically ordered phase and is assigned to a magnon. The second one persits far into the paramagnetic phase and exhibits both an electric and a magnetic activity at slightly different energies. This magnetoelectric excitation is interpreted in terms of atomic rotations and requires a helical electric polarization.

Enhancement of Curie temperature due to the coupling between Fe itinerant electrons and Dy localized electrons in DyFe2Zn20

The temperature dependence of magnetization and specific heat of the ferromagnetic compound DyFe2Zn20 has been measured in detail in various magnetic fields. We have observed anomalous magnetic behavior, i.e., a strong anisotropy at 2 K, disappearance of this anisotropy between approximately 30 K and T_c, and anomalous behavior of the specific heat in the magnetic fields near 20 K. These anomalous phenomena have been analyzed based on the strong exchange interaction between the Fe itinerant electrons and the Dy localized electrons as well as the crystalline electric field, Zeeman energy, and an usual exchange interaction between two Dy atoms. The higher T_c of DyFe2Zn20 compared with that of DyRu2Zn20 is caused by this exchange interaction between the Fe and Dy atoms.

Pressure Evolution of the Magnetic Field induced Ferromagnetic Fluctuation through the Pseudo-Metamagnetism of CeRu2Si2

Resistivity measurements performed under pressure in the paramagnetic ground state of CeRu2Si2 are reported. They demonstrate that the relative change of effective mass through the pseudo metamagnetic transition is invariant under pressure. The results are compared with the first order metamagnetic transition due to the antiferromagnetism of Ce0.9La0.1Ru2Si2 which corresponds to the "negative" pressure of CeRu2Si2 by volume expansion. Finally, we describe the link between the spin-depairing of quasiparticles on CeRu2Si2 and that of Cooper pairs on the unconventional heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5.

Parity Broken Chiral Spin Dynamics in Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$

The spin wave excitations emerging from the chiral helically modulated 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic order in a langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ enantiopure crystal were investigated by unpolarized and polarized inelastic neutron scattering. A dynamical fingerprint of the chiral ground state is obtained, singularized by (i) spectral weight asymmetries answerable to the structural chirality and (ii) a full chirality of the spin correlations observed over the whole energy spectrum. The intrinsic chiral nature of the spin waves elementary excitations is shown in absence of macroscopic time reversal symmetry breaking.

Magnetic and dielectric properties in the langasite-type compounds : A3BFe3D2O14 with A=Ba, Sr, Ca, B=Ta, Nb, Sb and D=Ge, Si

The Fe-based langasites are the first reported compounds presenting a magnetic ordering in this rich family, besides being well known for piezo-electric properties and optical activity. The structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of the Fe langasite compounds, with various substitution of non-magnetic cations, have been studied with x-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetostatic measurements, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, and dielectric measurements. The title compounds (trigonal, space group P321) display a helical magnetic order with signatures of frustration below TN ~24- 35 K where an anomaly of the dielectric permittivity is observed. The influence of the cationic substitutions and the nature of the magnetoelectric coupling is hereafter addressed.

Single domain magnetic helicity and triangular chirality in structurally enantiopure Ba3NbFe3Si2O14

A novel doubly chiral magnetic order is found out in the structurally chiral langasite compound Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$. The magnetic moments are distributed over planar frustrated triangular lattices of triangle units. On each of these they form the same triangular configuration. This ferro-chiral arrangement is helically modulated from plane to plane. Unpolarized neutron scattering on a single crystal associated with spherical neutron polarimetry proved that a single triangular chirality together with a single helicity is stabilized in an enantiopure crystal. A mean field analysis allows discerning the relevance on this selection of a twist in the plane to plane supersuperexchange paths.
