Energy Efficiency Analysis of Collaborative Compressive Sensing Scheme in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency of conventional collaborative compressive sensing (CCCS) scheme, focusing on balancing the tradeoff between energy efficiency and detection accuracy in cognitive radio environment. In particular, we derive the achievable throughput, energy consumption and energy efficiency of the CCCS scheme, and formulate an optimization problem to determine the optimal values of parameters which maximize the energy efficiency of the CCCS scheme. The maximization of energy efficiency is proposed as a multi-variable, non-convex optimization problem, and we provide approximations to reduce it to a convex optimization problem. We highlight that errors due to these approximations are negligible. Later, we analytically characterize the tradeoff between dimensionality reduction and collaborative sensing performance of the CCCS scheme -- the implicit tradeoff between energy saving and detection accuracy, and show that the loss due to compression can be recovered through collaboration which improves the overall energy efficiency.

Opportunistic Ambient Backscatter Communication in RF-Powered Cognitive Radio Networks

In the present contribution, we propose a novel opportunistic ambient backscatter communication (ABC) framework for radio frequency (RF)-powered cognitive radio (CR) networks. This framework considers opportunistic spectrum sensing integrated with ABC and harvest-then-transmit (HTT) operation strategies. Novel analytic expressions are derived for the average throughput, the average energy consumption and the energy efficiency in the considered set up. These expressions are represented in closed-form and have a tractable algebraic representation which renders them convenient to handle both analytically and numerically. In addition, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the energy efficiency of the CR system operating in mixed ABC $-$ and HTT $-$ modes, for a given set of constraints including primary interference and imperfect spectrum sensing constraints. Capitalizing on this, we determine the optimal set of parameters which in turn comprise the optimal detection threshold, the optimal degree of trade-off between the CR system operating in the ABC $-$ and HTT $-$ modes and the optimal data transmission time. Extensive results from respective computer simulations are also presented for corroborating the corresponding analytic results and to demonstrate the performance gain of the proposed model in terms of energy efficiency.

Sensing-Throughput Tradeoff for Superior Selective Reporting-based Spectrum Sensing in Energy Harvesting HCRNs

In this paper, we investigate the performance of conventional cooperative sensing (CCS) and superior selective reporting (SSR)-based cooperative sensing in an energy harvesting-enabled heterogeneous cognitive radio network (HCRN). In particular, we derive expressions for the achievable throughput of both schemes and formulate nonlinear integer programming problems, in order to find the throughput-optimal set of spectrum sensors scheduled to sense a particular channel, given primary user (PU) interference and energy harvesting constraints. Furthermore, we present novel solutions for the underlying optimization problems based on the cross-entropy (CE) method, and compare the performance with exhaustive search and greedy algorithms. Finally, we discuss the tradeoff between the average achievable throughput of the SSR and CCS schemes, and highlight the regime where the SSR scheme outperforms the CCS scheme. Notably, we show that there is an inherent tradeoff between the channel available time and the detection accuracy. Our numerical results show that, as the number of spectrum sensors increases, the channel available time gains a higher priority in an HCRN, as opposed to detection accuracy.

On the Sum of Fisher-Snedecor F Variates and its Application to Maximal-Ratio Combining

Capitalizing on the recently proposed Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading model, in this letter, we investigate the sum of independent but not identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) Fisher-Snedecor F variates. First, a novel closed-form expression is derived for the moment generating function of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio. Based on this, the corresponding probability density function and cumulative distribution function of the sum of i.n.i.d. Fisher- Snedecor F variates are derived, which are subsequently employed in the analysis of multiple branch maximal-ratio combining (MRC). Specifically, we investigate the impact of multipath and shadowed fading on the outage probability and outage capacity of MRC based receivers. In addition, we derive exact closed-form expressions for the average bit error rate of coherent binary modulation schemes followed by an asymptotic analysis which provides further insights into the effect of the system parameters on the overall performance. Importantly, it is shown that the effect of multipath fading on the system performance is more pronounced than that of shadowing.

Optical Wireless Cochlear Implants

In the present contribution, we introduce a wireless optical communication-based system architecture which is shown to significantly improve the reliability and the spectral and power efficiency of the transcutaneous link in cochlear implants (CIs). We refer to the proposed system as optical wireless cochlear implant (OWCI).In order to provide a quantified understanding of its design parameters, we establish a theoretical framework that takes into account the channel particularities, the integration area of the internal unit, the transceivers misalignment, and the characteristics of the optical units. To this end, we derive explicit expressions for the corresponding average signal-to-noise-ratio, outage probability, ergodic spectral efficiency and capacity of the transcutaneous optical link (TOL). These expressions are subsequently used to assess the dependence of the TOL's communication quality on the transceivers design parameters and the corresponding channels characteristics. The offered analytic results are corroborated with respective results from Monte Carlo simulations. Our findings reveal that OWCI is a particularly promising architecture that drastically increases the reliability and effectiveness of the CI TOL, whilst it requires considerably lower transmit power compared to the corresponding widely-used radio frequency (RF) solution.

Entropy and Energy Detection-based Spectrum Sensing over F Composite Fading Channels

In this paper, we investigate the performance of energy detection-based spectrum sensing over F composite fading channels. To this end, an analytical expression for the average detection probability is firstly derived. This expression is then extended to account for collaborative spectrum sensing, square-law selection diversity reception and noise power uncertainty. The corresponding receiver operating characteristics (ROC) are analyzed for different conditions of the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), noise power uncertainty, time-bandwidth product, multipath fading, shadowing, number of diversity branches and number of collaborating users. It is shown that the energy detection performance is sensitive to the severity of the multipath fading and amount of shadowing, whereby even small variations in either of these physical phenomena can significantly impact the detection probability. As a figure of merit to evaluate the detection performance, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) is derived and evaluated for different multipath fading and shadowing conditions. Closed-form expressions for the Shannon entropy and cross entropy are also formulated and assessed for different average SNR, multipath fading and shadowing conditions. Then the relationship between the Shannon entropy and ROC/AUC is examined where it is found that the average number of bits required for encoding a signal becomes small (i.e., low Shannon entropy) when the detection probability is high or when the AUC is large. The difference between composite and traditional small-scale fading is emphasized by comparing the cross entropy for Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading. A validation of the analytical results is provided through a careful comparison with the results of some simulations.

On the Secrecy Capacity of Fisher-Snedecor F Fading Channels

The performance of physical-layer security of the classic Wyner's wiretap model over Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading channels is considered in this work. Specifically, the main channel (i.e., between the source and the legitimate destination) and the eavesdropper's channel (i.e., between the source and the illegitimate destination) are assumed to experience independent quasi-static Fisher-Snedecor F fading conditions, which have been shown to be encountered in realistic wireless transmission scenarios in conventional and emerging communication systems. In this context, exact closed-form expressions for the average secrecy capacity (ASC) and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNSC) are derived. Additionally, an asymptotic analytical expression for the ASC is also presented. The impact of shadowing and multipath fading on the secrecy performance is investigated. Our results show that increasing the fading parameter of the main channel and or the shadowing parameter of the eavesdropper's channel improves the secrecy performance. The analytical results are compared with Monte-Carlo simulations to validate the analysis.

Performance Analysis of Coherent and Noncoherent Modulation under I/Q Imbalance

In-phase/quadrature-phase Imbalance (IQI) is considered a major performance-limiting impairment in direct-conversion transceivers. Its effects become even more pronounced at higher carrier frequencies such as the millimeter-wave frequency bands being considered for 5G systems. In this paper, we quantify the effects of IQI on the performance of different modulation schemes under multipath fading channels. This is realized by developing a general framework for the symbol error rate (SER) analysis of coherent phase shift keying, noncoherent differential phase shift keying and noncoherent frequency shift keying under IQI effects. In this context, the moment generating function of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio is first derived for both single-carrier and multi-carrier systems suffering from transmitter (TX) IQI only, receiver (RX) IQI only and joint TX/RX IQI. Capitalizing on this, we derive analytic expressions for the SER of the different modulation schemes. These expressions are corroborated by comparisons with corresponding results from computer simulations and they provide insights into the dependence of IQI on the system parameters. We demonstrate that the effects of IQI differ considerably depending on the considered system as some cases of single-carrier transmission appear robust to IQI, whereas multi-carrier systems experiencing IQI at the RX require compensation in order to achieve a reliable communication link.

Optical Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for Visible Light Communication

The proliferation of mobile Internet and connected devices, offering a variety of services at different levels of performance, represents a major challenge for the fifth generation wireless networks and beyond. This requires a paradigm shift towards the development of key enabling techniques for the next generation wireless networks. In this respect, visible light communication (VLC) has recently emerged as a new communication paradigm that is capable of providing ubiquitous connectivity by complementing radio frequency communications. One of the main challenges of VLC systems, however, is the low modulation bandwidth of the light-emitting-diodes, which is in the megahertz range. This article presents a promising technology, referred to as "optical- non-orthogonal multiple access (O-NOMA)", which is envisioned to address the key challenges in the next generation of wireless networks. We provide a detailed overview and analysis of the state-of-the-art integration of O-NOMA in VLC networks. Furthermore, we provide insights on the potential opportunities and challenges as well as some open research problems that are envisioned to pave the way for the future design and implementation of O-NOMA in VLC systems.

Optical Adaptive Precoding for Visible Light Communications

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques have recently demonstrated significant potentials in visible light communications (VLC), as they can overcome the modulation bandwidth limitation and provide substantial improvement in terms of spectral efficiency and link reliability. However, MIMO systems typically suffer from inter-channel interference, which causes severe degradation to the system performance. In this context, we propose a novel optical adaptive precoding (OAP) scheme for the downlink of MIMO VLC systems, which exploits the knowledge of transmitted symbols to enhance the effective signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. We also derive bit-error-rate expressions for the OAP under perfect and outdated channel state information (CSI). Our results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is more robust to both CSI error and channel correlation, compared to conventional channel inversion precoding.

The Area Under a Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve Over Enriched Multipath Fading Conditions

This work is devoted to the analysis of the performance of energy detection based spectrum sensing in the presence of enriched fading conditions which are distinct for the large number of multipath components and the lack of a dominant components. This type of fading conditions are characterized efficiently by the well known Nakagami${-}q$ or Hoyt distribution and the proposed analysis is carried out in the context of the area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve (AUC). Unlike the widely used probability of detection metric, the AUC is a single metric and has been shown to be rather capable of evaluating the performance of a detector in applications relating to cognitive radio, radar systems and biomedical engineering, among others. Based on this, novel analytic expressions are derived for the average AUC and its complementary metric, average CAUC, for both integer and fractional values of the involved time-bandwidth product. The derived expressions have a tractable algebraic representation which renders them convenient to handle both analytically and numerically. Based on this, they are employed in analyzing the behavior of energy detection based spectrum sensing over enriched fading conditions for different severity scenarios, which demonstrates that the performance of energy detectors is, as expected, closely related to the value of the fading parameter $q$.

Analytic solutions to a Marcum Q-function-based integral and application in energy detection of unknown signals over multipath fading channels

This work presents analytic solutions for a useful integral in wireless communications, which involves the Marcum $Q{-}$function in combination with an exponential function and arbitrary power terms. The derived expressions have a rather simple algebraic representation which renders them convenient both analytically and computationally. Furthermore, they can be useful in wireless communications and particularly in the context of cognitive radio communications and radar systems, where this integral is often encountered. To this end, we derive novel expressions for the probability of detection in energy detection based spectrum sensing over $η{-}μ$ fading channels. These expressions are given in closed-form and are subsequently employed in analyzing the effects of generalised multipath fading conditions in cognitive radio systems. As expected, it is shown that the detector is highly dependent upon the severity of fading conditions as even slight variation of the fading parameters affect the corresponding performance significantly.

Analytic Performance Evaluation of Underlay Relay Cognitive Networks with Channel Estimation Errors

This paper evaluates the bit error rate (BER) performance of underlay relay cognitive networks with decode-and-forward (DF) relays in arbitrary number of hops over Rayleigh fading with channel estimation errors. In order to facilitate the performance evaluation analytically we derive a novel exact closed-form representation for the corresponding BER which is validated through extensive comparisons with results from Monte-Carlo simulations. The proposed expression involved well known elementary and special functions which render its computational realization rather simple and straightforward. As a result, the need for laborious, energy exhaustive and time-consuming computer simulations can be ultimately omitted. Numerous results illustrate that the performance of underlay relay cognitive networks is, as expected, significantly degraded by channel estimation errors and that is highly dependent upon of both the network topology and the number of hops.

Analytic performance evaluation of M-QAM based decode-and-forward relay networks over enriched multipath fading channels

This work is devoted to the analysis of a regenerative multi-node dual-hop cooperative system over enriched multipath fading channels. Novel analytic expressions are derived for the symbol-error-rate for $M{-}$ary quadrature modulated signals in decode-and-forward relay systems over both independent and identically distributed as well as independent and non-identically distributed Nakagami${-}$q (Hoyt) fading channels. The derived expressions are based on the moment-generating-function approach and are given in closed-form in terms of the generalized Lauricella series. The offered results are validated extensively through comparisons with respective results from computer simulations and are useful in the analytic performance evaluation of regenerative cooperative relay communication systems. To this end, it is shown that the performance of the cooperative system is, as expected, affected by the number of employed relays as well as by the value of the fading parameter $q$, which accounts for \textit{pre-Rayleigh} fading conditions that are often encountered in mobile cellular radio systems.

Entropy and Channel Capacity under Optimum Power and Rate Adaptation over Generalized Fading Conditions

Accurate fading characterization and channel capacity determination are of paramount importance in both conventional and emerging communication systems. The present work addresses the nonlinearity of the propagation medium and its effects on the channel capacity. Such fading conditions are first characterized using information theoretic measures, namely, Shannon entropy, cross entropy and relative entropy. The corresponding effects on the channel capacity with and without power adaptation are then analyzed. Closed-form expressions are derived and validated through comparisons with respective results from computer simulations. It is shown that the effects of fading nonlinearities are significantly larger than those of fading parameters such as the scattered-wave power ratio, and the correlation coefficient between the in-phase and quadrature components in each cluster of multipath components.

Multiple Access for Visible Light Communications: Research Challenges and Future Trends

The ever-increasing demand of mobile Internet and multimedia services poses unique and significant challenges for current and future generation wireless networks. These challenges are mainly relating to the support of massive ubiquitous connectivity, low latency and highly efficient utilization of spectrum resources. Therefore, it is vital to consider them extensively prior to design and deployment of future wireless networks. To this end, the present article provides a comprehensive overview of a particularly promising and effective wireless technology, namely, visible light communication (VLC). In this context, we initially provide a thorough overview of frequency domain multiple access techniques for single and multi-carrier systems, which is then followed by an in depth discussion on the technical considerations of optical code division multiple access techniques and their adoption in indoor VLC applications. Furthermore, we address space division multiple access and, finally, we revisit and analyze the distinct characteristics of a new technology, namely, non-orthogonal multiple access, which has been proposed recently as a particularly effective solution.

On the Performance of Visible Light Communications Systems with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

Visible light communications (VLC) have been recently proposed as a promising and efficient solution to indoor ubiquitous broadband connectivity. In this paper, non-orthogonal multiple access, which has been recently proposed as an effective scheme for fifth generation (5G) wireless networks, is considered in the context of VLC systems, under different channel uncertainty models. To this end, we first derive a novel closed-form expression for the bit-error-rate (BER) under perfect channel state information (CSI). Capitalizing on this, we quantify the effect of noisy and outdated CSI by deriving a simple approximated expression for the former and a tight upper bound for the latter. The offered results are corroborated by respective results from extensive Monte Carlo simulations and are used to provide useful insights on the effect of imperfect CSI knowledge on the system performance. It was shown that, while noisy CSI leads to slight degradation in the BER performance, outdated CSI can cause detrimental performance degradation if the order of the users' channel gains change as a result of mobility

The present paper is devoted to the evaluation of energy detection based spectrum sensing over different multipath fading and shadowing conditions. This is realized by means of a unified and versatile approach that is based on the particularly flexible mixture gamma distribution. To this end, novel analytic expressions are firstly derived for the probability of detection over MG fading channels for the conventional single-channel communication scenario. These expressions are subsequently employed in deriving closed-form expressions for the case of square-law combining and square-law selection diversity methods. The validity of the offered expressions is verified through comparisons with results from respective computer simulations. Furthermore, they are employed in analyzing the performance of energy detection over multipath fading, shadowing and composite fading conditions, which provides useful insighs on the performance and design of future cognitive radio based communication systems.
