One-particle density matrix and momentum distribution function of one-dimensional anyon gases

We present a systematic study of the Green functions of a one-dimensional gas of impenetrable anyons. We show that the one-particle density matrix is the determinant of a Toeplitz matrix whose large N asymptotic is given by the Fisher-Hartwig conjecture. We provide a careful numerical analysis of this determinant for general values of the anyonic parameter, showing in full details the crossover between bosons and fermions and the reorganization of the singularities of the momentum distribution function. We show that the one-particle density matrix satisfies a Painleve VI differential equation, that is then used to derive the small distance and large momentum expansions. We find that the first non-vanishing term in this expansion is always k^{-4}, that is proved to be true for all couplings in the Lieb-Liniger anyonic gas and that can be traced back to the presence of a delta function interaction in the Hamiltonian.

Exact mesoscopic correlation functions of the pairing model

We study the static correlation functions of the Richardson pairing model (also known as the reduced or discrete-state BCS model) in the canonical ensemble. Making use of the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz formalism, we obtain exact expressions which are easily evaluated numerically for any value of the pairing strength up to large numbers of particles. We provide explicit results at half-filling and extensively discuss their finite-size scaling behavior.

Entanglement and correlation functions following a local quench: a conformal field theory approach

We show that the dynamics resulting from preparing a one-dimensional quantum system in the ground state of two decoupled parts, then joined together and left to evolve unitarily with a translational invariant Hamiltonian (a local quench), can be described by means of quantum field theory. In the case when the corresponding theory is conformal, we study the evolution of the entanglement entropy for different bi-partitions of the line. We also consider the behavior of one- and two-point correlation functions. All our findings may be explained in terms of a picture, that we believe to be valid more generally, whereby quasiparticles emitted from the joining point at the initial time propagate semiclassically through the system.

Quantum Quenches in Extended Systems

We study in general the time-evolution of correlation functions in a extended quantum system after the quench of a parameter in the hamiltonian. We show that correlation functions in d dimensions can be extracted using methods of boundary critical phenomena in d+1 dimensions. For d=1 this allows to use the powerful tools of conformal field theory in the case of critical evolution. Several results are obtained in generic dimension in the gaussian (mean-field) approximation. These predictions are checked against the real-time evolution of some solvable models that allows also to understand which features are valid beyond the critical evolution. All our findings may be explained in terms of a picture generally valid, whereby quasiparticles, entangled over regions of the order of the correlation length in the initial state, then propagate with a finite speed through the system. Furthermore we show that the long-time results can be interpreted in terms of a generalized Gibbs ensemble. We discuss some open questions and possible future developments.

Correlation functions of one-dimensional anyonic fluids

A universal description of correlation functions of one-dimensional anyonic gapless systems in the low-momentum regime is presented. We point out a number of interesting features, including universal oscillating terms with frequency proportional to the statistical parameter and beating effects close to the fermion points. The results are applied to the one-dimensional anyonic Lieb-Liniger model and checked against the exact results in the impenetrable limit.

One-particle dynamical correlations in the one-dimensional Bose gas

The momentum- and frequency-dependent one-body correlation function of the one-dimensional interacting Bose gas (Lieb-Liniger model) in the repulsive regime is studied using the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz and numerics. We first provide a determinant representation for the field form factor which is well-adapted to numerical evaluation. The correlation function is then reconstructed to high accuracy for systems with finite but large numbers of particles, for a wide range of values of the interaction parameter. Our results are extensively discussed, in particular their specialization to the static case.

Slow dynamics in critical ferromagnetic vector models relaxing from a magnetized initial state

Within the universality class of ferromagnetic vector models with O(n) symmetry and purely dissipative dynamics, we study the non-equilibrium critical relaxation from a magnetized initial state. Transverse correlation and response functions are exactly computed for Gaussian fluctuations and in the limit of infinite number n of components of the order parameter. We find that the fluctuation-dissipation ratios (FDRs) for longitudinal and transverse modes differ already at the Gaussian level. In these two exactly solvable cases we completely describe the crossover from the short-time to the long-time behavior, corresponding to a disordered and a magnetized initial condition, respectively. The effects of non-Gaussian fluctuations on longitudinal and transverse quantities are calculated in the first order in the epsilon-expansion and reliable three-dimensional estimates of the two FDRs are obtained.

Time-dependence of correlation functions following a quantum quench

We show that the time-dependence of correlation functions in an extended quantum system in d dimensions, which is prepared in the ground state of some hamiltonian and then evolves without dissipation according to some other hamiltonian, may be extracted using methods of boundary critical phenomena in d+1 dimensions. For d=1 particularly powerful results are available using conformal field theory. These are checked against those available from solvable models. They may be explained in terms of a picture, valid more generally, whereby quasiparticles, entangled over regions of the order of the correlation length in the initial state, then propagate classically through the system.

Critical aging of Ising ferromagnets relaxing from an ordered state

We investigate the nonequilibrium behavior of the d-dimensional Ising model with purely dissipative dynamics during its critical relaxation from a magnetized initial configuration. The universal scaling forms of the two-time response and correlation functions of the magnetization are derived within the field-theoretical approach and the associated scaling functions and fluctuation-dissipation ratio are computed up to first order in the epsilon-expansion. Aging behavior is clearly displayed during the critical relaxation. These results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Ising model with Glauber dynamics. The crossover to the case of relaxation from a disordered state is discussed and the crossover function for the fluctuation-dissipation ratio is computed within the Gaussian approximation.

Entanglement entropy and quantum field theory: a non-technical introduction

In these proceedings we give a pedagogical and non-technical introduction to the Quantum Field Theory approach to entanglement entropy. Particular attention is devoted to the one space dimensional case, with a linear dispersion relation, that, at a quantum critical point, can be effectively described by a two-dimensional Conformal Field Theory.

Five-loop epsilon expansion for O(n)xO(m) spin models

We compute the Renormalization Group functions of a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian with O(n)x O(m) symmetry up to five-loop in Minimal Subtraction scheme. The line n^+(m,d), which limits the region of second-order phase transition, is reconstructed in the framework of the epsilon=4-d expansion for generic values of $m$ up to O(epsilon^5). For the physically interesting case of noncollinear but planar orderings (m=2) we obtain n^+(2,3)=6.1(6) by exploiting different resummation procedures. We substantiate this results re-analyzing six-loop fixed dimension series with pseudo-epsilon expansion, obtaining n^+(2,3)=6.22(12). We also provide predictions for the critical exponents characterizing the second-order phase transition occurring for n>n^+.

Evolution of Entanglement Entropy in One-Dimensional Systems

We study the unitary time evolution of the entropy of entanglement of a one-dimensional system between the degrees of freedom in an interval of length l and its complement, starting from a pure state which is not an eigenstate of the hamiltonian. We use path integral methods of quantum field theory as well as explicit computations for the transverse Ising spin chain. In both cases, there is a maximum speed v of propagation of signals. In general the entanglement entropy increases linearly with time $t$ up to t=l/2v, after which it saturates at a value proportional to l, the coefficient depending on the initial state. This behavior may be understood as a consequence of causality.

Ageing Properties of Critical Systems

In the past few years systems with slow dynamics have attracted considerable theoretical and experimental interest. Ageing phenomena are observed during this ever-lasting non-equilibrium evolution. A simple instance of such a behaviour is provided by the dynamics that takes place when a system is quenched from its high-temperature phase to the critical point. The aim of this review is to summarize the various numerical and analytical results that have been recently obtained for this case. Particular emphasis is put to the field-theoretical methods that can be used to provide analytical predictions for the relevant dynamical quantities. Fluctuation-dissipation relations are discussed and in particular the concept of fluctuation-dissipation ratio (FDR) is reviewed, emphasizing its connection with the definition of a possible effective temperature. The Renormalization-Group approach to critical dynamics is summarized and the scaling forms of the time-dependent non-equilibrium correlation and response functions of a generic observable are discussed. From them the universality of the associated FDR follows as an amplitude ratio. It is then possible to provide predictions for ageing quantities in a variety of different models. In particular the results for Model A, B, and C dynamics of the O(N) Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian, and Model A dynamics of the weakly dilute Ising magnet and of a ϕ^3 theory, are reviewed and compared with the available numerical results and exact solutions. The effect of a planar surface on the ageing behaviour of Model A dynamics is also addressed within the mean-field approximation.

Harmonic crossover exponents in O(n) models with the pseudo-epsilon expansion approach

We determine the crossover exponents associated with the traceless tensorial quadratic field, the third- and fourth-harmonic operators for O(n) vector models by re-analyzing the existing six-loop fixed dimension series with pseudo-epsilon expansion. Within this approach we obtain the most accurate theoretical estimates that are in optimum agreement with other theoretical and experimental results.

Critical behavior of O(2)xO(N) symmetric models

We investigate the controversial issue of the existence of universality classes describing critical phenomena in three-dimensional statistical systems characterized by a matrix order parameter with symmetry O(2)xO(N) and symmetry-breaking pattern O(2)xO(N) -> O(2)xO(N-2). Physical realizations of these systems are, for example, frustrated spin models with noncollinear order. Starting from the field-theoretical Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian, we consider the massless critical theory and the minimal-subtraction scheme without epsilon expansion. The three-dimensional analysis of the corresponding five-loop expansions shows the existence of a stable fixed point for N=2 and N=3, confirming recent field-theoretical results based on a six-loop expansion in the alternative zero-momentum renormalization scheme defined in the massive disordered phase. In addition, we report numerical Monte Carlo simulations of a class of three-dimensional O(2)xO(2)-symmetric lattice models. The results provide further support to the existence of the O(2)xO(2) universality class predicted by the field-theoretical analyses.

Multicritical behavior in frustrated spin systems with noncollinear order

We investigate the phase diagram and, in particular, the nature of the the multicritical point in three-dimensional frustrated $N$-component spin models with noncollinear order in the presence of an external field, for instance easy-axis stacked triangular antiferromagnets in the presence of a magnetic field along the easy axis. For this purpose we study the renormalization-group flow in a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson ϕ^4 theory with symmetry O(2)x[Z_2 +O(N-1)] that is expected to describe the multicritical behavior. We compute its MS βfunctions to five loops. For N\ge 4, their analysis does not support the hypothesis of an effective enlargement of the symmetry at the multicritical point, from O(2) x [Z_2+O(N-1)] to O(2)xO(N). For the physically interesting case N=3, the analysis does not allow us to exclude the corresponding symmetry enlargement controlled by the O(2)xO(3) fixed point. Moreover, it does not provide evidence for any other stable fixed point. Thus, on the basis of our field-theoretical results, the transition at the multicritical point is expected to be either continuous and controlled by the O(2)xO(3) fixed point or to be of first order.

On the definition of a unique effective temperature for non-equilibrium critical systems

We consider the problem of the definition of an effective temperature via the long-time limit of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio (FDR) after a quench from the disordered state to the critical point of an O(N) model with dissipative dynamics. The scaling forms of the response and correlation functions of a generic observable are derived from the solutions of the corresponding Renormalization Group equations. We show that within the Gaussian approximation all the local observables have the same FDR, allowing for a definition of a unique effective temperature. This is no longer the case when fluctuations are taken into account beyond that approximation, as shown by a computation up to the first order in the epsilon-expansion for two quadratic observables. This implies that, contrarily to what often conjectured, a unique effective temperature can not be defined for this class of models.

Five-loop epsilon expansion for U(n)xU(m) models: finite-temperature phase transition in light QCD

We consider the U(n)xU(m) symmetric Phi^4 Lagrangian to describe the finite-temperature phase transition in QCD in the limit of vanishing quark masses with n=m=N_f flavors and unbroken anomaly at T_c. We compute the Renormalization Group functions to five-loop order in Minimal Subtraction scheme. Such higher order functions allow to describe accurately the three-dimensional fixed-point structure in the plane (n,m), and to reconstruct the line n^+(m,d) which limits the region of second-order phase transitions by an expansion in epsilon=4-d. We always find n^+(m,3)>m, thus no three-dimensional stable fixed point exists for $n=m$ and the finite temperature transition in light QCD should be first-order. This result is confirmed by the pseudo-epsilon analysis of massive six-loop three dimensional series.
