Subsystem trace distance in low-lying states of $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theories

We report on a systematic replica approach to calculate the subsystem trace distance for a quantum field theory. This method has been recently introduced in [J. Zhang, P. Ruggiero, P. Calabrese, Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 141602 (2019)], of which this work is a completion. The trace distance between two reduced density matrices $ρ_A$ and $σ_A$ is obtained from the moments $\textrm{tr} (ρ_A-σ_A)^n$ and taking the limit $n\to1$ of the traces of the even powers. We focus here on the case of a subsystem consisting of a single interval of length $\ell$ embedded in the low lying eigenstates of a one-dimensional critical system of length $L$, a situation that can be studied exploiting the path integral form of the reduced density matrices of two-dimensional conformal field theories. The trace distance turns out to be a scale invariant universal function of $\ell/L$. Here we complete our previous work by providing detailed derivations of all results and further new formulas for the distances between several low-lying states in two-dimensional free massless compact boson and fermion theories. Remarkably, for one special case in the bosonic theory and for another in the fermionic one, we obtain the exact trace distance, as well as the Schatten $n$-distance, for an interval of arbitrary length, while in generic case we have a general form for the first term in the expansion in powers of $\ell/L$. The analytical predictions in conformal field theories are tested against exact numerical calculations in XX and Ising spin chains, finding perfect agreement. As a byproduct, new results in two-dimensional CFT are also obtained for other entanglement-related quantities, such as the relative entropy and the fidelity.

Correlation and entanglement spreading in nested spin chains

The past few years have witnessed the development of a comprehensive theory to describe integrable systems out of equilibrium, in which the Bethe ansatz formalism has been tailored to address specific problems arising in this context. While most of the work initially focused on the study of prototypical models such as the well-known Heisenberg chain, many theoretical results have been recently extended to a class of more complicated $\it{nested}$ integrable systems, displaying different species of quasiparticles. Still, in the simplest context of quantum quenches, the vast majority of theoretical predictions have been numerically verified only in systems with an elementary Bethe ansatz description. In this work, we fill this gap and present a direct numerical test of some results presented in the recent literature for nested systems, focusing in particular on the Lai-Sutherland model. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods, we compute the spreading of both correlation functions and entanglement entropy after a quench from a simple class of product initial states. This allows us to test the validity of the nested version of a conjectured formula, based on the quasiparticle picture, for the growth of the entanglement entropy, and the Bethe ansatz predictions for the "light-cone" velocity of correlation functions.

Quantum information dynamics in multipartite integrable systems

In a non-equilibrium many-body system, the quantum information dynamics between non-complementary regions is a crucial feature to understand the local relaxation towards statistical ensembles. Unfortunately, its characterization is a formidable task, as non-complementary parts are generally in a mixed state. We show that for integrable systems, this quantum information dynamics can be quantitatively understood within the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading. Precisely, we provide an exact prediction for the time evolution of the logarithmic negativity after a quench. In the space-time scaling limit of long times and large subsystems, the negativity becomes proportional to the Rényi mutual information with Rényi index $α=1/2$. We provide robust numerical evidence for the validity of our results for free-fermion and free-boson models, but our framework applies to any interacting integrable system.

Symmetry resolved entanglement in free fermionic systems

We consider the symmetry resolved Rényi entropies in the one dimensional tight binding model, equivalent to the spin-1/2 XX chain in a magnetic field. We exploit the generalised Fisher-Hartwig conjecture to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the entanglement entropies with a flux charge insertion at leading and subleading orders. The o(1) contributions are found to exhibit a rich structure of oscillatory behaviour. We then use these results to extract the symmetry resolved entanglement, determining exactly all the non-universal constants and logarithmic corrections to the scaling that are not accessible to the field theory approach. We also discuss how our results are generalised to a one-dimensional free fermi gas.

Twisted and untwisted negativity spectrum of free fermions

A basic diagnostic of entanglement in mixed quantum states is known as the positive partial transpose (PT) criterion. Such criterion is based on the observation that the spectrum of the partially transposed density matrix of an entangled state contains negative eigenvalues, in turn, used to define an entanglement measure called the logarithmic negativity. Despite the great success of logarithmic negativity in characterizing bosonic many-body systems, generalizing the operation of PT to fermionic systems remained a technical challenge until recently when a more natural definition of PT for fermions that accounts for the Fermi statistics has been put forward. In this paper, we study the many-body spectrum of the reduced density matrix of two adjacent intervals for one-dimensional free fermions after applying the fermionic PT. We show that in general there is a freedom in the definition of such operation which leads to two different definitions of PT: the resulting density matrix is Hermitian in one case, while it becomes pseudo-Hermitian in the other case. Using the path-integral formalism, we analytically compute the leading order term of the moments in both cases and derive the distribution of the corresponding eigenvalues over the complex plane. We further verify our analytical findings by checking them against numerical lattice calculations.

Integrable quenches in nested spin chains I: the exact steady states

We consider quantum quenches in the integrable $SU(3)$-invariant spin chain (Lai-Sutherland model) which admits a Bethe ansatz description in terms of two different quasiparticle species, providing a prototypical example of a model solvable by nested Bethe ansatz. We identify infinite families of integrable initial states for which analytic results can be obtained. We show that they include special families of two-site product states which can be related to integrable ``soliton non-preserving'' boundary conditions in an appropriate rotated channel. We present a complete analytical result for the quasiparticle rapidity distribution functions corresponding to the stationary state reached at large times after the quench from the integrable initial states. Our results are obtained within a Quantum Transfer Matrix (QTM) approach, which does not rely on the knowledge of the quasilocal conservation laws or of the overlaps between the initial states and the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. Furthermore, based on an analogy with previous works, we conjecture analytic expressions for such overlaps: this allows us to employ the Quench Action method to derive a set of integral equations characterizing the quasi-particle distribution functions of the post-quench steady state. We verify that the solution to the latter coincides with our analytic result found using the QTM approach. Finally, we present a direct physical application of our results by providing predictions for the propagation of entanglement after the quench from such integrable states.

Integrable quenches in nested spin chains II: fusion of boundary transfer matrices

We consider quantum quenches in the integrable $SU(3)$-invariant spin chain (Lai-Sutherland model), and focus on the family of integrable initial states. By means of a Quantum Transfer Matrix approach, these can be related to "soliton-non-preserving" boundary transfer matrices in an appropriate transverse direction. In this work, we provide a technical analysis of such integrable transfer matrices. In particular, we address the computation of their spectrum: this is achieved by deriving a set of functional relations between the eigenvalues of certain "fused operators" that are constructed starting from the soliton-non-preserving boundary transfer matrices (namely the $T$- and $Y$-systems). As a direct physical application of our analysis, we compute the Loschmidt echo for imaginary and real times after a quench from the integrable states. Our results are also relevant for the study of the spectrum of $SU(3)$-invariant Hamiltonians with open boundary conditions.

Entanglement entropy of the long-range Dyson hierarchical model

We study the ground state entanglement entropy of the quantum Dyson hierarchical spin chain in which the interaction decays algebraically with the distance as $r^{-1-σ}$. We exploit the real-space renormalisation group solution which gives the ground-state wave function in the form of a tree tensor network and provides a manageable recursive expression for the reduced density matrix of the renormalised ground state. Surprisingly, we find that at criticality the entanglement entropy obeys an area law, as opposite to the logarithmic scaling of short-range critical systems and of other non-hierarchical long-range models. We provide also some analytical results in the limit of large and small $σ$ that are tested against the numerical solution of the recursive equations.

Subsystem Trace Distance in Quantum Field Theory

We develop a systematic method to calculate the trace distance between two reduced density matrices in 1+1 dimensional quantum field theories. The approach exploits the path integral representation of the reduced density matrices and an ad hoc replica trick. We then extensively apply this method to the calculation of the distance between reduced density matrices of one interval of length $\ell$ in eigenstates of conformal field theories. When the interval is short, using the operator product expansion of twist operators, we obtain a universal form for the leading order in $\ell$ of the trace distance. We compute the trace distances among the reduced density matrices of several low lying states in two-dimensional free massless boson and fermion theories. We compare our analytic conformal results with numerical calculations in XX and Ising spin chains finding perfect agreement.

Rényi entropies after releasing the Néel state in the XXZ spin-chain

We study the Rényi entropies in the spin-$1/2$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain after a quantum quench starting from the Néel state. The quench action method allows us to obtain the stationary Rényi entropies for arbitrary values of the index $α$ as generalised free energies evaluated over a calculable thermodynamic macrostate depending on $α$. We work out this macrostate for several values of $α$ and of the anisotropy $Δ$ by solving the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. By varying $α$ different regions of the Hamiltonian spectrum are accessed. The two extremes are $α\to\infty$ for which the thermodynamic macrostate is either the ground state or a low-lying excited state (depending on $Δ$) and $α=0$ when the macrostate is the infinite temperature state. The Rényi entropies are easily obtained from the macrostate as function of $α$ and a few interesting limits are analytically characterised. We provide robust numerical evidence to confirm our results using exact diagonalisation and a stochastic numerical implementation of Bethe ansatz. Finally, using tDMRG we calculate the time evolution of the Rényi entanglement entropies. For large subsystems and for any $α$, their density turns out to be compatible with that of the thermodynamic Rényi entropies

Entanglement and relative entropies for low-lying excited states in inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems

Conformal field theories in curved backgrounds have been used to describe inhomogeneous one-dimensional systems, such as quantum gases in trapping potentials and non-equilibrium spin chains. This approach provided, in a elegant and simple fashion, non-trivial analytic predictions for quantities, such as the entanglement entropy, that are not accessible through other methods. Here, we generalise this approach to low-lying excited states, focusing on the entanglement and relative entropies in an inhomogeneous free-fermionic system. Our most important finding is that the universal scaling function characterising these entanglement measurements is the same as the one for homogeneous systems, but expressed in terms of a different variable. This new scaling variable is a non-trivial function of the subsystem length and system's inhomogeneity that is easily written in terms of the curved metric. We test our predictions against exact numerical calculations in the free Fermi gas trapped by a harmonic potential, finding perfect agreement.

Spin-charge separation effects in the low-temperature transport of 1D Fermi gases

We study the transport properties of a one-dimensional spinful Fermi gas, after junction of two semi-infinite sub-systems held at different temperatures. The ensuing dynamics is studied by analysing the space-time profiles of local observables emerging at large distances $x$ and times $t$, as a function of $ζ= x/t$. At equilibrium, the system displays two distinct species of quasi-particles, naturally associated with different physical degrees of freedom. By employing the generalised hy- drodynamic approach, we show that when the temperatures are finite no notion of separation can be attributed to the quasi-particles. In this case the profiles can not be qualitatively distinguished by those associated to quasi-particles of a single species that can form bound states. On the contrary, signatures of separation emerge in the low-temperature regime, where two distinct characteristic ve- locities appear. In this regime, we analytically show that the profiles display a piece-wise constant form and can be understood in terms of two decoupled Luttinger liquids.

Spreading of entanglement and correlations after a quench with intertwined quasiparticles

We extend the semiclassical picture for the spreading of entanglement and correlations to quantum quenches with several species of quasiparticles that have non-trivial pair correlations in momentum space. These pair correlations are, for example, relevant in inhomogeneous lattice models with a periodically-modulated Hamiltonian parameter. We provide explicit predictions for the spreading of the entanglement entropy in the space-time scaling limit. We also predict the time evolution of one- and two-point functions of the order parameter for quenches within the ordered phase. We test all our predictions against exact numerical results for quenches in the Ising chain with a modulated transverse field and we find perfect agreement.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals and the recursion formula for conformal blocks

We reconsider the computation of the entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in a (1+1) dimensional conformal field theory by conformal block expansion of the 4-point correlation function of twist fields. We show that accurate results may be obtained by taking into account several terms in the operator product expansion (OPE) of twist fields and by iterating the Zamolodchikov recursion formula for each conformal block. We perform a detailed analysis for the Ising conformal field theory and for the free compactified boson. Each term in the conformal block expansion can be easily analytically continued and so this approach also provides a good approximation for the von Neumann entropy.

Entanglement evolution and generalised hydrodynamics: noninteracting systems

The large-scale properties of homogeneous states after quantum quenches in integrable systems have been successfully described by a semiclassical picture of moving quasiparticles. Here we consider the generalisation for the entanglement evolution after an inhomogeneous quench in noninteracting systems in the framework of generalised hydrodynamics. We focus on the protocol where two semi-infinite halves are initially prepared in different states and then joined together, showing that a proper generalisation of the quasiparticle picture leads to exact quantitative predictions. If the system is initially prepared in a quasistationary state, we find that the entanglement entropy is additive and it can be computed by means of generalised hydrodynamics. Conversely, additivity is lost when the initial state is not quasistationary; yet the entanglement entropy in the large-scale limit can be exactly predicted in the quasiparticle picture, provided that the initial state is low entangled.

Rényi entropies of generic thermodynamic macrostates in integrable systems

We study the behaviour of Rényi entropies in a generic thermodynamic macrostate of an integrable model. In the standard quench action approach to quench dynamics, the Rényi entropies may be derived from the overlaps of the initial state with Bethe eigenstates. These overlaps fix the driving term in the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) formalism. We show that this driving term can be also reconstructed starting from the macrostate's particle densities. We then compute explicitly the stationary Rényi entropies after the quench from the dimer and the tilted Néel state in XXZ spin chains. For the former state we employ the overlap TBA approach, while for the latter we reconstruct the driving terms from the macrostate. We discuss in full details the limits that can be analytically handled and we use numerical simulations to check our results against the large time limit of the entanglement entropies.

Unusual area-law violation in random inhomogeneous systems

The discovery of novel entanglement patterns in quantum many-body systems is a prominent research direction in contemporary physics. Here we provide the example of a spin chain with random and inhomogeneous couplings that in the ground state exhibits a very unusual area law violation. In the clean limit, i.e., without disorder, the model is the rainbow chain and has volume law entanglement. We show that, in the presence of disorder, the entanglement entropy exhibits a power-law growth with the subsystem size, with an exponent 1/2. By employing the Strong Disorder Renormalization Group (SDRG) framework, we show that this exponent is related to the survival probability of certain random walks. The ground state of the model exhibits extended regions of short-range singlets (that we term ``bubble'' regions) as well as rare long range singlet (``rainbow'' regions). Crucially, while the probability of extended rainbow regions decays exponentially with their size, that of the bubble regions is power law. We provide strong numerical evidence for the correctness of SDRG results by exploiting the free-fermion solution of the model. Finally, we investigate the role of interactions by considering the random inhomogeneous XXZ spin chain. Within the SDRG framework and in the strong inhomogeneous limit, we show that the above area-law violation takes place only at the free-fermion point of phase diagram. This point divides two extended regions, which exhibit volume-law and area-law entanglement, respectively.

Entanglement and diagonal entropies after a quench with no pair structure

A typical working condition in the study of quantum quenches is that the initial state produces a distribution of quasiparticle excitations with an opposite-momentum-pair structure. In this work we investigate the dynamical and stationary properties of the entanglement entropy after a quench from initial states which do not have such structure: instead of pairs of excitations they generate $ν$-plets of correlated excitations with $ν>2$. Our study is carried out focusing on a system of non-interacting fermions on the lattice. We study the time evolution of the entanglement entropy showing that the standard semiclassical formula is not applicable. We propose a suitable generalisation which correctly describes the entanglement entropy evolution and perfectly matches numerical data. We finally consider the relation between the thermodynamic entropy of the stationary state and the diagonal entropy, showing that when there is no pair structure their ratio depends on the details of the initial state and lies generically between $1/2$ and $1$.
