Boundary Field Theory Approach to the Renormalization of SQUID Devices

We show that the quantum properties of some Josephson SQUID devices are described by a boundary sine Gordon model. Our approach naturally describes multi-junction SQUID devices and, when applied to a single junction SQUID (the rf-SQUID), it reproduces the known results of Glazman and Hekking. We provide a detailed analysis of the regimes accessible to an rf-SQUID and to a two-Josephson junction SQUID device (the dc-SQUID). We then compute the normal component of the current-response of a SQUID device to an externally applied voltage and show that the equation describing the current-voltage characteristic function reduces to well-known results when the infrared cutoff is suitably chosen. Our approach helps in establishing new and interesting connections between superconducting devices, quantum brownian motion, fermionic quantum wires and, more generally, quantum impurity problems.

Stretching the electron as far as it will go

Effects associated with the existence of isolated zero modes of Majorana fermions are discussed. It is argued that the quantization of this system necessarily contains highly extended quantum states and that populating and depopulating such states by interacting with the quantum system leads to a long ranged teleportation process. Also leads to spontaneous violation of fermion parity symmetry. A quasi realistic model consisting of a quantum wire embedded in a p-wave superconductor is discussed as an explicit example of a physical system with an isolated Majorana zero mode.

Superconducting Topological Fluids in Josephson Junction Arrays

We argue that the frustrated Josephson junction arrays may support a topologically ordered superconducting ground state, characterized by a non-trivial ground state degeneracy on the torus. This superconducting quantum fluid provides an explicit example of a system in which superconductivity arises from a topological mechanism rather than from the usual Landau-Ginzburg mechanism.

QED_3 on a space-time lattice: a comparison between compact and noncompact formulation

Quantum electrodynamics in a (2+1)-dimensional space-time has been object of studies both as effective theory for the pseudogap phase of high-T_c superconductors and for the theoretical investigation of mechanisms of confinement in presence of matter fields. We discretize the theory using both compact and noncompact formulations, analyze the behavior of the chiral condensate and of the monopole density and compare them. Finally we draw some conclusions about the possible equivalence of the two lattice formulations.

Effective Boundary Field Theory for a Josephson Junction Chain with a Weak Link

We show that a finite Josephson Junction (JJ) chain, ending with two bulk superconductors, and with a weak link at its center, may be regarded as a condensed matter realization of a two-boundary Sine-Gordon model. Computing the partition function yields a remarkable analytic expression for the DC Josephson current as a function of the phase difference across the chain. We show that, in a suitable range of the chain parameters, there is a crossover of the DC Josephson current from a sinusoidal to a sawtooth behavior, which signals a transition from a regime where the boundary term is an irrelevant operator to a regime where it becomes relevant.

An O(N) symmetric extension of the Sine-Gordon Equation

We discuss an O(N) exension of the Sine-Gordon (S-G)equation which allows us to perform an expansion around the leading order in large-N result using Path-Integral methods. In leading order we show our methods agree with the results of a variational calculation at large-N. We discuss the striking differences for a non-polynomial interaction between the form for the effective potential in the Gaussian approximation that one obtains at large-N when compared to the N=1 case. This is in contrast to the case when the classical potential is a polynomial in the field and no such drastic differences occur. We find for our large-N extension of the Sine-Gordon model that the unbroken ground state is unstable as one increases the coupling constant (as it is for the original S-G equation) and we determine the stability criteria.

Hidden supersymmetry of a $P,T-$invariant $3D$ fermion system

We show that a (2+1)-dimensional $P,T-$invariant free fermion system, relevant to $P,T-$conserving models of high-$T_c$ superconductivity, has a U(1,1) dynamical symmetry as well as an $N=3$ supersymmetry with the even generator being a quadratic function of the spin operator and of the generator of chiral ${\rm U_c(1)}$ transformations. We demonstrate that the hidden supersymmetry leads to a non-standard superextension of the (2+1)-dimensional Poincaré group. As a result, the one particle states of the $P,T-$invariant fermion system realize an irreducible representation of the Poincaré supergroup labelled by the zero eigenvalue of the superspin operator.

Solitary Waves and Compactons in a class of Generalized Korteweg-DeVries Equations

We study the class of generalized Korteweg-DeVries equations derivable from the Lagrangian: $ L(l,p) = \int \left( \frac{1}{2} \vp_{x} \vp_{t} - { {(\vp_{x})^{l}} \over {l(l-1)}} + α(\vp_{x})^{p} (\vp_{xx})^{2} \right) dx, $ where the usual fields $u(x,t)$ of the generalized KdV equation are defined by $u(x,t) = \vp_{x}(x,t)$. This class contains compactons, which are solitary waves with compact support, and when $l=p+2$, these solutions have the feature that their width is independent of the amplitude. We consider the Hamiltonian structure and integrability properties of this class of KdV equations. We show that many of the properties of the solitary waves and compactons are easily obtained using a variational method based on the principle of least action. Using a class of trial variational functions of the form $u(x,t) = A(t) \exp \left[-β(t) \left|x-q(t) \right|^{2n} \right]$ we find soliton-like solutions for all $n$, moving with fixed shape and constant velocity, $c$. We show that the velocity, mass, and energy of the variational travelling wave solutions are related by $ c = 2 r E M^{-1}$, where $ r = (p+l+2)/(p+6-l)$, independent of $n$.\newline \newline PACS numbers: 03.40.Kf, 47.20.Ky, Nb, 52.35.Sb
