Signature of the staggered flux state around a superconducting vortex in underdoped cuprates

Based on the SU(2) lattice gauge theory formulation of the t-J model, we discuss possible signature of the unit cell doubling associated with the staggered flux (SF) state in the lightly doped spin liquid. Although the SF state appears only dynamically in a uniform d-wave superconducting (SC) state, a topological defect [SU(2) vortex] freezes the SF state inside the vortex core. Consequently, the unit cell doubling shows up in the hopping ($χ_{ij}$) and pairing ($Δ_{ij}$) order parameters of physical electrons. We find that whereas the center in the vortex core is a SF state, as one moves away from the core center, a correlated staggered modulation of $χ_{ij}$ and $Δ_{ij}$ becomes predominant. We predict that over the region outside the core and inside the internal gauge field penetration depth around a vortex center, the local density-of-states (LDOS) exhibits staggered peak-dip (SPD) structure inside the V-shaped profile when measured on the bonds. The SPD structure has its direct origin in the unit cell doubling associated with the SF core and the robust topological texture, which has little to do with the symmetry of the d-wave order parameter. Therefore the structure may survive the tunneling matrix element effects and easily be detected by STM experiment.

Renormalized mean-field theory of the neutron scattering in cuprate superconductors

The magnetic excitation spectrum of the t-t'-J-model is studied in mean-field theory and compared to inelastic neutron-scattering (INS) experiments on YBCO and BSCCO superconductors. Within the slave-particle formulation the dynamical spin response is calculated from a renormalized Fermi liquid with an effective interaction ~J in the magnetic particle--hole channel. We obtain the so-called 41meV resonance at wave vector (pi,pi) as a collective spin-1 excitation in the d-wave superconducting state. It appears sharp (undamped), if the underlying Fermi surface is hole-like with a sufficient next-nearest-neighbor hopping t'<0. The double-layer structure of YBCO or BSCCO is not important for the resonance to form. The resonance energy ω_{res} and spectral weight at optimal doping come out comparable to experiment. The observed qualitative behavior of ω_{res} with hole filling is reproduced in the underdoped as well as overdoped regime. A second, much broader peak becomes visible in the magnetic excitation spectrum if the 2D wave-vector is integrated over. It is caused by excitations across the maximum gap, and in contrast to the resonance its energy is almost independent of doping. At energies above or below ω_{res} the commensurate resonance splits into incommensurate peaks, located off (pi,pi). Below ω_{res} the intensity pattern is of `parallel' type and the dispersion relation of incommensurate peaks has a negative curvature. This is in accordance with recent INS experiments on YBCO.

Staggered local density-of-states around the vortex in underdoped cuprates

We have studied a single vortex with the staggered flux (SF) core based on the SU(2) slave-boson theory of high $T_c$ superconductors. We find that whereas the center in the vortex core is a SF state, as one moves away from the core center, a correlated staggered modulation of the hopping amplitude $χ$ and pairing amplitude $Δ$ becomes predominant. We predict that in this region, the local density-of-states (LDOS) exhibits staggered modulation when measured on the bonds, which may be directly detected by STM experiments.

Vortex Structure in Underdoped Cuprates

In underdoped cuprates the normal state is highly anomalous and is characterized as a pseudogap phase. The question of how to describe the ``normal'' core of a superconducting vortex is an outstanding open problem. We show that the SU(2) formulation of the t-J model provides a description of the normal state as well as the vortex core. Interestingly, the pseudogap persists inside the core. We also found that it is likely that the core consists of a state which breaks translational symmetry due to the existence of staggered current which generate staggered magnetic field with very slow dynamics. This staggered flux state is likely to be the ground state for magnetic fields higher than $H_{c2}$. Experiments to test this picture are proposed.

Density of States of a d-wave Superconductor in the Presence of Strong Impurity Scatterers: a Non Perturbative Result

We present a method to compute the density of states induced by N non magnetic impurities in a d-wave superconductor, in the unitary limit of very strong scatering centers. For frequencies very small as compared to the superconducting gap ($ω\ll Δ_0$) the additional density of states has the leading divergence ${\displaystyle δρ(ω) \simeq n_i / [ | 2 ω| (\ln^2 |ω/Δ_0| + (π/2)^2)]}$. This result is non perturbative.

Staggered-vorticity correlations in a lightly doped t-J model: a variational approach

We report staggered vorticity correlations of current in the d-wave variational wave function for the lightly-doped t-J model. Such correlations are explained from the SU(2) symmetry relating d-wave and staggered-flux mean-field phases. The correlation functions computed by the variational Monte Carlo method suggest that pairs are formed of holes circulating in opposite directions.

Confinement and Bose Condensation in Gauge Theory of High-Tc Superconductors

The issue of confinement and bose condensation is studied for gauge models of high-Tc superconductors. First the Abelian-Higgs model in (2+1)D, i.e., XY-model coupled to lattice gauge field $a_μ$ with coupling $g$, is studied taking into account both the instantons and vortices. This model corresponds to integer filling of the bosons, and can be mapped to a dual superconductor. Our main resut is that the instantons introduce a term which couples linearly to the dual superconductor order parameter, and tend to pin its phase. As a result the vortex condensation always occurs due to the instantons, and the Meissner effect for the gauge field $a_μ$ is absent, although $a_μ$ is massive. This state is essentially the same as the confining phase of the pure gauge model. Away from integer filling, a ``magnetic field'' $μ$ (the chemical potential of the bosons) is applied to this dual superconductor. Then the Higgs phase revives in the case of weak $g$ and large $x$, where vortices do not condense in spite of the instantons. In the opposite case, i.e., strong $g$ and small $x$, phase separation occurs, forming either microscopic patches or macroscopic stripe domains of the Mott insulating state.

Slave Boson Approach to The Neutron Scattering in YBCO Superconductors

The evolution of the so-called `41meV resonance' in the magnetic response of YBCO cuprates is studied with slave-boson theory for the t-t'-J-model. The resonance appears as a collective spin fluctuation in the d-wave superconducting (SC) state. It is undamped at optimal doping due to a threshold in the excitation energies of particle--hole pairs with relative wave vector (pi,pi). When hole filling is reduced, the resonance moves to lower energies and broadens. Below the resonance energy we find a crossover to an incommensurate response in agreement with a recent experiment on YBa_2CU_3O_6.6. We show that dynamic nesting in the d-wave SC state causes this effect.

Theory of spin excitations in undoped and underdoped cuprates

We consider the magnetic properties of high Tc cuprates from a gauge theory point of view, with emphasis on the underdoped regime. Underdoped cuprates possess certain antiferromagnetic correlations, as evidenced, for example, by different temperature dependence of the Cu and O site NMR relaxation rates, that are not captured well by slave boson mean field theories of the t-J model. We show that the inclusion of gauge fluctuations will remedy the deficiencies of the mean field theories. As a concrete illustration of the gauge-fluctuation restoration of the antiferromangetic correlation and the feasibility of the 1/N perturbation theory, the Heisenberg spin chain is analyzed in terms of a 1+1D U(1) gauge theory with massless Dirac fermions. The 1/N-perturbative treatment of the same gauge theory in 2+1D (which can be motivated from the mean field pi-flux phase of the Heisenberg model) leads to a dynamical mass generation corresponding to an antiferromagnetic ordering. On the other hand, it is argued that in a similar gauge theory with an additional coupling to a Bose (holon) field, symmetry breaking does not occur, but antiferromagnetic correlations are enhanced, which is the situation in the underdoped cuprates.

Exact Density of States in a System of Disordered Two Dimensional Dirac Fermions in the Unitarity Limit: The d-wave Superconductor

In this paper we present a method to compute the exact density of states induced by $N$ non magnetic impurities in a system of two dimensional Dirac fermions in the unitarity limit. We review the case of the $π$-flux phase of the Heisenberg model and also treat the disordered d-wave superconductor. In both case we find additional states in the gap with $δρ(ω) \simeq n_i/ |ω(\ln^2 |ω/Δ_0| + (π/2)^2)|$.

Pseudogaps in Underdoped Cuprates

It has become clear in the past several years that the cuprates show many unusual properties, both in the normal and superconducting states, especially in the underdoped region. In particular, gap-like behavior is observed in magnetic properties, c-axis conductivity and photoemission, whereas in-plane transport properties are only slightly affected by the pseudogap. I shall argue that these experimental evidences must be viewed in the context of the physics of a doped Mott insulator and that they support the notion of spin charge separation. I shall review recent theoretical developments, concentrating on studies based on the t-J model. I shall describe a model based on quasiparticle excitations, which predicts the doping dependence of T_c and anomalous energy-gap-to-T_c ratios. Finally, I shall outline how the model may be derived from a microscopic formulation of the t-J model. After a brief review of the U(1) formulation, I shall explain some of the difficulties encountered there, and how a new SU(2) formulation can resolve some of the difficulties.

Staggered-spin contribution to nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladders

We study the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in the two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder. More specifically, we consider the contribution to $1/T_1$ from the processes with momentum transfer $(π,π)$. In the limit of weak coupling between the two chains, this contribution is of activation type with gap $2Δ$ at low temperatures ($Δ$ is the spin gap), but crosses over to a slowly-decaying temperature dependence at the crossover temperature $T\approxΔ$. This crossover possibly explains the recent high-temperature NMR results on ladder-containing cuprates by T. Imai et al.

Order from Disorder: Non Magnetic Impurities in the Spin-gap Phase of the Cuprates

We solve the problem of $N$ non magnetic impurities in the staggered flux phase of the Heisenberg model which we assume to be a good mean-field approximation for the spin-gap phase of the cuprates. The density of states is evaluated exactly in the unitary limit and is porportional to $1/\left (ω\ln^2(|ω|/D))$, in analogy with the 1D case of doped spin-Peierls and two-leg ladders compounds. We argue that the system exhibits a quasi long-range order at T=0 with instantaneous spin-spin correlations decreasing as $n_i/ \ln^2\left (n_i R_{ij})$ for large distances $R_{ij}$ and we predict enhanced low energy fluctuations in Neutron Scattering.

Theory of Quasi-Particles in the Underdoped High Tc Superconducting State

The microscopic theory of superconducting (SC) state in the SU(2) slave-boson model is developed. We show how the pseudogap and Fermi surface (FS) segments in the normal state develop into a d-wave gap in the superconducting state. Even though the superfluid density is of order x (the doping concentration), the physical properties of the low lying quasiparticles are found to resemble those in BCS theory. Thus the microscopic theory lay the foundation for our earlier phenomenological discussion of the unusual SC properties in the underdoped cuprates.

Spin susceptibility and the pi-excitation in underdoped cuprates

The dynamical spin susceptibility chi'' at wave vector (pi, pi) and the spectrum pi'' of the spin-triplet particle--particle excitation with center of mass momentum (pi, pi) (pi-excitation) are considered in the slave-boson formulation of the t--J-model. Propagators are calculated in a diagrammatic t-matrix approximation in the d-wave superconducting state for a wide doping range. The resulting spectra chi'' and pi'' both show a resonance at a doping dependent energy, in qualitative agreement with recent numerical cluster calculations. In underdoped systems, the peak position is comparable to that found in neutron scattering experiments. The peak in chi'' as well as pi'' is at low doping entirely caused by spin fluctuations, whereas the triplet particle--particle channel does not contribute as a collective mode.

Bipolaronic charge excitations in t-J two-leg ladders

We present a low-energy effective model for the charge degrees of freedom in two-leg t-J ladders. Starting from SU(2) mean-field theory, we exclude the spin degrees of freedom which have an energy gap. At low temperatures, the mean-field solution is the staggered-flux phase. For gapless charge excitations the effective theory is the Luther-Emery liquid. Our analysis is applicable at low doping and in the ``physical'' range of parameters $t/J\sim 3$ where there is only one massless mode in the charge sector and no massless modes in the spin sector. Within our model we make predictions about correlation exponents and the superconductivity order parameter, and discuss the comparison with the existing numerical results.

Reply to Comment on ``Scaling of the quasiparticle spectrum for d-wave superconductors''

Volovik and Kopnin make two seperate points regarding our recent paper (S. H. Simon and P. A. Lee, PRL 78, 1548 (1997); cond-mat/9611133). First they note that the scaling regime we address in our paper is limited by the curvature of the Fermi surface, and secondly they note that the crossover scale derived in our paper is incorrect. These points are valid and are discussed in this reply. With the exception of the incorrectly predicted crossover scale, the results of our paper remain unchanged.

Massless Dirac Fermions, Gauge Fields, and Underdoped Cuprates

We study 2+1 dimensional massless Dirac fermions and bosons coupled to a U(1) gauge field as a model for underdoped cuprates. We find that the uniform susceptibility and the specific heat coefficient are logarithmically enhanced (compared to linear-in-T behavior) due to the fluctuation of transverse gauge field which is the only massless mode at finite boson density. We analyze existing data, and find good agreement in the spin gap phase. Within our picture, the drop of the susceptibility below the superconducting T_c arises from the suppression of gauge fluctuations.
