Dissipative Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene near the Dirac Point

We report on the unusual nature of nu=0 state in the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene and show that electron transport in this regime is dominated by counter-propagating edge states. Such states, intrinsic to massless Dirac quasiparticles, manifest themselves in a large longitudinal resistivity rho_xx > h/e^2, in striking contrast to rho_xx behavior in the standard QHE. The nu=0 state in graphene is also predicted to exhibit pronounced fluctuations in rho_xy and rho_xx and a smeared zero Hall plateau in sigma_xy, in agreement with experiment. The existence of gapless edge states puts stringent constraints on possible theoretical models of the nu=0 state.

Projected wavefunction study of Spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice

We perform a Gutzwiller projected wavefunction study for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice to compare energies of several spin-liquid states. The result indicates that a U(1)-Dirac spin-liquid state has the lowest energy. Furthermore, even without variational parameters, the energy turns out to be very close to that found by exact diagonalization. We show that such a U(1)-Dirac state represents a quantum phase whose low energy physics is governed by four flavors of two-component Dirac fermions coupled to a U(1) gauge field. These results are discussed in the context of recent experiments on ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$.

Susceptibility of a spinon Fermi surface coupled to a U(1) gauge field

We study the theory of a U(1) gauge field coupled to a spinon Fermi surface. Recently this model has been proposed as a possible description of the organic compound $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3$. We calculate the susceptibility of this system and in particular examine the effect of pairing of the underlying spin liquid. We show that this proposed theory is consistent with the observed susceptibility measurements.

Order from Disorder in Graphene Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

Valley-polarized quantum Hall states in graphene are described by a Heisenberg O(3) ferromagnet model, with the ordering type controlled by the strength and sign of valley anisotropy. A mechanism resulting from electron coupling to strain-induced gauge field, giving leading contribution to the anisotropy, is described in terms of an effective random magnetic field aligned with the ferromagnet z axis. We argue that such random field stabilizes the XY ferromagnet state, which is a coherent equal-weight mixture of the $K$ and $K'$ valley states. Other implications such as the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless ordering transition and topological defects with half-integer charge are discussed.

Amperean Pairing Instability in the U(1) Spin Liquid State with Fermi Surface and Application to $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3$

Recent experiments on the organic compound $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3$ raise the possibility that the system may be described as a quantum spin liquid. Here we propose a pairing state caused by the `Amperean' attractive interaction between spinons on a Fermi surface mediated by the U(1) gauge field. We show that this state can explain many of the observed low temperature phenomena and discuss testable consequences.

Observation of emergent photon in Monte Carlo simulation of exciton condensate

Using Monte Carlo simulation, we studied fractionalized phases in a model of exciton bose condensate and found evidence for an emergent photon in a finite size system. The fractionalized phase is a meta-stable Coulomb phase where an emergent photon arises as a gapless collective excitation of the excitons. We also studied a possibility of spiral* phase where fractionalization and long range spiral order of the exciton condensate coexist.

Vortex description of the fractionalized phase in exciton bose condensate

As a sequel to the previous work [Phys. Rev. B 72, 235104 (2005)] we present a vortex description of the fractionalized phase in exciton bose condensate. Magnetic flux line and monopole of the 3+1D emergent U(1) gauge theory are identified in the exciton picture. A bundle of vortex/anti-vortex pairs of all flavors of excitons corresponds to the magnetic flux line and a point at which the vortices and anti-vortices recombine is identified as magnetic monopole. This completes the magnetic sector of the low energy excitation in the fractionalized phase.

A Variational Monte Carlo Study of the Current Carried by a Quasiparticle

With the use of Gutzwiller-projected variational states, we study the renormalization of the current carried by the quasiparticles in high-temperature superconductors and of the quasiparticle spectral weight. The renormalization coefficients are computed by the variational Monte Carlo technique, under the assumption that quasiparticle excitations may be described by Gutzwiller-projected BCS quasiparticles. We find that the current renormalization coefficient decreases with decreasing doping and tends to zero at zero doping. The quasiparticle spectral weight Z_+ for adding an electron shows an interesting structure in k space, which corresponds to a depression of the occupation number k just outside the Fermi surface. The perturbative corrections to those quantities in the Hubbard model are also discussed.

Emergent U(1) gauge theory with fractionalized boson/fermion from the bose condensation of exciton in multi-band insulator

Fractionalized phases are studied in a low energy theory of exciton bose condensate in a multi-band insulator. It is shown that U(1) gauge theory with either fractionalized boson or fermion can emerge out of a single model depending on the coupling constants. Both the statistics and spin of the fractionalized particles are dynamically determined, satisfying the spin-statistics theorem in the continuum limit. We present two mutually consistent descriptions for the fractionalization. In the first approach, it is shown that fractionalized degree of freedom emerges from reduced phase space constrained by strong interaction and that the U(1) gauge field arises as a collective excitation of the low energy modes. In the second approach, complimentary descriptions are provided for the fractionalization based on world line picture of the original excitons. The emergent gauge structure is identified from the fluctuating web of exciton world lines which, in turn, realizes the string net condensation in a space-time picture.

Edge-currents in superconductors with a broken time-reversal symmetry

We analyze edge currents and edge bands at the surface of a time-reversal symmetry breaking d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} superconductor. We show that the currents have large Friedel oscillations with two interfering frequencies: \sqrt{2}k_F from sub-gap states, and 2 k_F from the continuum. The results are based independently on a self-consistent slave-boson mean field theory for the t-J model on a triangular lattice, and on a T-matrix scattering theory calculation. The shape of the edge-state band, as well as the particular frequency \sqrt{2}k_F of the Friedel oscillations are attributes unique for the d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} case, and may be used as a fingerprint for its identification. Extensions to different time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors can be achieved within the same approach.

Electron correlation and Fermi surface topology of Na$_x$CoO$_2$

The electronic structure of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ revealed by recent photoemission experiments shows important deviations from band theory predictions. The six small Fermi surface pockets predicted by LDA calculations have not been observed as the associated $e_g^\prime$ band fails to cross the Fermi level for a wide range of sodium doping concentration $x$. In addition, significant bandwidth renormalizations of the $t_{2g}$ complex have been observed. We show that these discrepancies are due to strong electronic correlations by studying the multi-orbital Hubbard model in the Hartree-Fock and strong-coupling Gutzwiller approximation. The quasiparticle dispersion and the Fermi surface topology obtained in the presence of strong local Coulomb repulsion are in good agreement with experiments.

U(1) Gauge Theory of the Hubbard Model : Spin Liquid States and Possible Application to k-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3

We formulate a U(1) gauge theory of the Hubbard model in the slave-rotor representation. From this formalism it is argued that spin liquid phases may exist near the Mott transition in the Hubbard model on triangular and honeycomb lattices at half filling. The organic compound k-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3 is a good candidate for the spin liquid state on a triangular lattice. We predict a highly unusual temperature dependence for the thermal conductivity of this material.

Doping a Mott Insulator: Physics of High Temperature Superconductivity

This article reviews the effort to understand the physics of high temperature superconductors from the point of view of doping a Mott insulator. The basic electronic structure of the cuprates is reviewed, emphasizing the physics of strong correlation and establishing the model of a doped Mott insulator as a starting point. A variety of experiments are discussed, focusing on the region of the phase diagram close to the Mott insulator (the underdoped region) where the behavior is most anomalous. We introduce Anderson's idea of the resonating valence bond (RVB) and argue that it gives a qualitative account of the data. The importance of phase fluctuation is discussed, leading to a theory of the transition temperature which is driven by phase fluctuation and thermal excitation of quasiparticles. We then describe the numerical method of projected wavefunction which turns out to be a very useful technique to implement the strong correlation constraint, and leads to a number of predictions which are in agreement with experiments. The remainder of the paper deals with an analytic treatment of the t-J model, with the goal of putting the RVB idea on a more formal footing. The slave-boson is introduced to enforce the constraint of no double occupation. The implementation of the local constraint leads naturally to gauge theories. We give a rather thorough discussion of the role of gauge theory in describing the spin liquid phase of the undoped Mott insulator. We next describe the extension of the SU(2) formulation to nonzero doping. We show that inclusion of gauge fluctuation provides a reasonable description of the pseudogap phase.

On the stability of U(1) spin liquids in two dimensions

We establish that spin liquids described in terms of gapless fermionic (Dirac) spinons and gapless U(1) gauge fluctuations can be stable in two dimensions, at least when the physical SU(2) spin symmetry is generalized to SU(N). Equivalently, we show that compact QED3 has a deconfined phase for a large number of fermion fields, in the sense that monopole fluctuations can be irrelevant at low energies. A precise characterization is provided by an emergent global topological U(1) symmetry corresponding to the conservation of gauge flux. Beginning with an SU(N) generalization of the S=1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we consider the pi-flux spin liquid and, via a systematic analysis of all operators, show that there are NO relevant perturbations (in the renormalization group sense) about the large-N spin liquid fixed point, which is thus a stable phase. We provide a further illustration of this conclusion with an approximate renormalization group calculation that treats the gapless fermions and the monopoles on an equal footing. This approach directly points out some of the flaws in the erroneous "screening" argument for the relevance of monopoles in compact QED3.

Cuprates as doped U(1) spin liquids

We explore theoretically the notion that the underdoped cuprates may be viewed as doped U(1) spin liquid Mott insulators. We pursue a conceptually clear version of this idea that naturally incorporates several aspects of the phenomenology of the cuprates. We argue that the low doping region may be fruitfully discussed in terms of the universal physics associated with a chemical potential tuned Mott transition between a U(1) spin liquid insulator and a d-wave superconductor. A precise characterization of the deconfinement in the U(1) spin liquid is provided by the emergence of a conserved gauge flux. This extra conservation law should hold at least approximately in the underdoped materials. Experiments that could possibly detect this conserved gauge flux are proposed.

Lightly doped dimerized spin chain in the one-dimensional t-J-J' model

We study the one-dimensional t-J-J'-model in the limit of small hole doping $x$ and small $J/t$, $J'/t$. Special emphasis is put on the regime $J'/J \approx .5$ where a spin gap is present at small doping and the undoped spin chain is strongly dimerized. Using a perturbative approach and Luttinger liquid arguments, we demonstrate for this non-integrable class of models that the charge degrees of freedom behave as non-interacting spinless solitons in the dilute hole limit. Our approach is also used to evaluate the energy and mass renormalization of a single hole. Interestingly, the corrections of these quantities are in powers of $\sqrt{J/t}$. At $J'/J=.5$ we construct a variational spin-polaron wave function for the hole and find good agreement with our perturbative results.

Study of the triangular lattice tV model near x=1/3

We study extended Hubbard model on a triangular lattice near doping $x=1/3$, which may be relevant for the recently discovered superconductor Na$_x$CoO$_2 \cdot y$H$_2$O. By generalizing this model to $N$ fermionic species, we formulate a meanfield description in the limit of large $N$. In meanfield, we find two possible phases: a renormalized Fermi liquid and a $\rt3rt3$ charge density wave state. The transition between the two phases is driven by increasing the nearest neighbor repulsion and is found to be first order for doping $x=1/3$, but occurs close to the point of the local instability of the uniform liquid. We also study fluctuations about the uniform meanfield state in a systematic 1/N expansion, focusing on the residual interaction of quasiparticles and possible superconducting instabilities due to this interaction. Upon moving towards the CDW instability, the increasing charge fluctuations favor a particular $f$-wave triplet state. (This state was recently discussed by Tanakaet al, cond-mat/0311266). We also report a direct Gutzwiller wavefunction study of the spin-1/2 model.

Doped t-J Model on a Triangular Lattice: Possible Application to Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$0 and Na$_{1-x}$TiO$_2$

We report the finding of time-reversal-symmetry-breaking $d_{x^2-y^2}+ id_{xy}$ superconducting ground state in the slave-boson mean-field theory for the t-J model on triangular lattice. For $t/J=-5$ ($t/J=-9$) pairing exists for $x < 13%$ ($x<8%$) upon electron doping, and $x <56%$ ($x<13%$) upon hole doping. These results are potentially relevant to doped Mott insulators Na$_x$CoO$_2$.yH$_2$O and Na$_{1-x}$TiO$_2$.
