We describe some relations between the properties of the Cauchy problem for an ODE and the properties of the Cauchy problem for the associated continuity equation in the class of measures.
In the present paper we prove a form of Arnold diffusion. The main result says that for a "generic" perturbation of a nearly integrable system of arbitrary degrees of freedom $n\ge 2$ \[ H_0(p)+\eps H_1(þ,p,t),\quad þ\in \T^n,\ p\in B^n,\ t\in \T=\R/\T, \] with strictly convex $H_0$ there exists an orbit $(þ_{\e},p_{e})(t)$ exhibiting Arnold diffusion in the sens that [\sup_{t>0}\|p(t)-p(0) \| >l(H_1)>0] where $l(H_1)$ is a positive constant independant of $\e$. Our proof is a combination of geometric and variational methods. We first build 3-dimensional normally hyperbolic invariant cylinders of limited regularity, but of large size, extrapolating on \cite{Be3} and \cite{KZZ}. Once these cylinders are constructed we use versions of Mather variational method developed in Bernard \cite{Be1}, Cheng-Yan \cite{CY1, CY2}.
We prove the existence of normally hyperbolic invariant cylinders in nearly integrable hamiltonian systems.
In the context of Mather's theory of Lagrangian systems, we study the decomposition in chain-transitive classes of the Mather invariant sets. As an application, we prove, under appropriate hypotheses, the semi-continuity of the so-called Aubry set as a function of the Lagrangian.
In 1996, Ricardo Ricardo Mañé discovered that Mather measures are in fact the minimizers of a "universal" infinite dimensional linear programming problem. This fundamental result has many applications, one of the most important is to the estimates of the generic number of Mather measures. Mañé obtained the first estimation of that sort by using finite dimensional approximations. Recently, we were able with Gonzalo Contreras to use this method of finite dimensional approximation in order to solve a conjecture of John Mather concerning the generic number of Mather measures for families of Lagrangian systems. In the present paper we obtain finer results in that direction by applying directly some classical tools of convex analysis to the infinite dimensional problem. We use a notion of countably rectifiable sets of finite codimension in Banach (and Frechet) spaces which may deserve independent interest.
We consider the variational problem consisting of minimizing a polyconvex integrand for maps between manifolds. We offer a simple and direct proof of the existence of a minimizing map. The proof is based on Young measures.
We provide a full self-contained proof of a famous Lemma of Ilmanen. This proof is based on a regularisation procedure similar to Lasry-Lions regularisation.
Nonnegative measure-valued solutions of the continuity equation are uniquely determined by their initial condition, if the characteristic ODE associated to the velocity field has a unique solution. In this paper we give a partial extension of this result to signed measure-valued solutions, under a quantitative two-sided Osgood condition on the velocity field. Our results extend those obtained for log-Lipschitz vector fields by Bahouri and Chemin.
This is a short survey on Nekhoroshev theory, KAM theory, and Arnold's diffusion.
We prove that a generic lagrangian has finitely many minimizing measures for every cohomology class.
Arnold's diffusion in quasi integrable hamiltonian systems occurs in exponentially large time. We study an initially hyperbolic system which admits diffusion in polynomial time.
We study the evolution, under convex Hamiltonian flows on cotangent bundles of compact manifolds, of certain distinguished subsets of the phase space. These subsets are generalizations of Lagrangian graphs, we call them pseudographs. They emerge in a natural way from Fathi's weak KAM theory. By this method, we find various orbits which connect prescribed regions of the phase space. Our study is inspired by works of John Mather. As an application, we obtain the existence of diffusion in a large class of a priori unstable systems and provide a solution to the large gap problem. We hope that our method will have applications to more examples.
The dynamics of globally minimizing orbits of Lagrangian systems can be studied using the Barrier function, as Mather first did, or using the pairs of weak KAM solutions introduced by Fathi. The central observation of the present paper is that Fathi weak KAM pairs are precisely the admissible pairs for the Kantorovich problem dual to the Monge transportation problem with the Barrier function as cost. We exploit this observation to recover several relations between the Barrier functions and the set of weak KAM pairs in an axiomatic and elementary way.
We establish the existence of smooth critical sub-solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation on compact manifolds for smooth convex Hamiltonians, that is in the context of weak KAM theory, under the assumption that the Aubry set is the union of finitely many hyperbolic periodic orbits.
We discuss a space of Young measures in connection with some variational problems. We use it to present a proof of the Theorem of Tonelli on the existence of minimizing curves. We generalize a recent result of Ambrosio, Gigli and Savaré on the decomposition of the weak solutions of the transport equation. We also prove, in the context of Mather theory, the equality between Closed measures and Holonomic measures.
We study optimal transportation of measures on compact manifolds for costs defined from convex Lagrangians. We prove that optimal transportation can be interpolated by measured Lipschitz laminations, or geometric currents. The methods are inspired from Mather theory on Lagrangian systems. We make use of viscosity solutions of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the spirit of Fathi's approach to Mather theory.
We prove the existence of an optimal map for the Monge problem when the cost is a supercritical Mane potential on a compact manifold. Supercritical Mane potentials form a class of costs which generalize the Riemannian distances. We describe new links between this transportation problem and viscosity subsolutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation.
We prove that the so-called Aubry and Mane sets introduced by John Mather in Lagrangian dynamics are symplectic invariants. In order to do so, we introduce a barrier in phase space, and propose definitions of Aubry and Mane sets for non-convex Hamiltonian systems.
