Central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusions processes

We revisit functional central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusion processes. Translated in the language of partial differential equations of evolution, they appear as diffusion limits in the asymptotic analysis of Fokker-Planck type equations. We focus on the square integrable framework, and we provide tractable conditions on the infinitesimal generator, including degenerate or anomalously slow diffusions. We take advantage on recent developments in the study of the trend to the equilibrium of ergodic diffusions. We discuss examples and formulate open problems.

Poincaré inequalities and hitting times

Equivalence of the spectral gap, exponential integrability of hitting times and Lyapunov conditions are well known. We give here the correspondance (with quantitative results) for reversible diffusion processes. As a consequence, we generalize results of Bobkov in the one dimensional case on the value of the Poincaré constant for logconcave measures to superlinear potentials. Finally, we study various functional inequalities under different hitting times integrability conditions (polynomial, ...). In particular, in the one dimensional case, ultracontractivity is equivalent to a bounded Lyapunov condition.

Poincaré inequality and the Lp convergence of semi-groups

We prove that for symmetric Markov processes of diffusion type admitting a "carré du champ", the Poincaré inequality is equivalent to the exponential convergence of the associated semi-group in one (resp. all) $Ł^p(μ)$ spaces for $p\in (1,+\infty)$. Part of this result extends to the stationary non necessarily symmetric situation.

Functional Inequalities via Lyapunov conditions

We review here some recent results by the authors, and various coauthors, on (weak, super) Poincaré inequalities, transportation-information inequalities or logarithmic Sobolev inequality via a quite simple and efficient technique: Lyapunov conditions.

Asymptotic analysis and diffusion limit of the Persistent Turning Walker Model

The Persistent Turning Walker Model (PTWM) was introduced by Gautrais et al in Mathematical Biology for the modelling of fish motion. It involves a nonlinear pathwise functional of a non-elliptic hypo-elliptic diffusion. This diffusion solves a kinetic Fokker-Planck equation based on an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Gaussian process. The long time "diffusive" behavior of this model was recently studied by Degond & Motsch using partial differential equations techniques. This model is however intrinsically probabilistic. In the present paper, we show how the long time diffusive behavior of this model can be essentially recovered and extended by using appropriate tools from stochastic analysis. The approach can be adapted to many other kinetic "probabilistic" models.

Quasi-stationary distributions and diffusion models in population dynamics

In this paper, we study quasi-stationarity for a large class of Kolmogorov diffusions. The main novelty here is that we allow the drift to go to $- \infty$ at the origin, and the diffusion to have an entrance boundary at $+\infty$. These diffusions arise as images, by a deterministic map, of generalized Feller diffusions, which themselves are obtained as limits of rescaled birth--death processes. Generalized Feller diffusions take nonnegative values and are absorbed at zero in finite time with probability 1. An important example is the logistic Feller diffusion. We give sufficient conditions on the drift near 0 and near $+ \infty$ for the existence of quasi-stationary distributions, as well as rate of convergence in the Yaglom limit and existence of the $Q$-process. We also show that under these conditions, there is exactly one quasi-stationary distribution, and that this distribution attracts all initial distributions under the conditional evolution, if and only if $+\infty$ is an entrance boundary. In particular this gives a sufficient condition for the uniqueness of quasi-stationary distributions. In the proofs spectral theory plays an important role on $L^2$ of the reference measure for the killed process.

Competitive or Weak Cooperative Stochastic Lotka-Volterra Systems Conditioned to Non-Extinction

We are interested in the long time behavior of a two-type density-dependent biological population conditioned to non-extinction, in both cases of competition or weak cooperation between the two species. This population is described by a stochastic Lotka-Volterra system, obtained as limit of renormalized interacting birth and death processes. The weak cooperation assumption allows the system not to blow up. We study the existence and uniqueness of a quasi-stationary distribution, that is convergence to equilibrium conditioned to non extinction. To this aim we generalize in two-dimensions spectral tools developed for one-dimensional generalized Feller diffusion processes. The existence proof of a quasi-stationary distribution is reduced to the one for a $d$-dimensional Kolmogorov diffusion process under a symmetry assumption. The symmetry we need is satisfied under a local balance condition relying the ecological rates. A novelty is the outlined relation between the uniqueness of the quasi-stationary distribution and the ultracontractivity of the killed semi-group. By a comparison between the killing rates for the populations of each type and the one of the global population, we show that the quasi-stationary distribution can be either supported by individuals of one (the strongest one) type or supported by individuals of the two types. We thus highlight two different long time behaviors depending on the parameters of the model: either the model exhibits an intermediary time scale for which only one type (the dominant trait) is surviving, or there is a positive probability to have coexistence of the two species.

Functional inequalities for heavy tails distributions and application to isoperimetry

This paper is devoted to the study of probability measures with heavy tails. Using the Lyapunov function approach we prove that such measures satisfy different kind of functional inequalities such as weak Poincaré and weak Cheeger, weighted Poincaré and weighted Cheeger inequalities and their dual forms. Proofs are short and we cover very large situations. For product measures on $\R^n$ we obtain the optimal dimension dependence using the mass transportation method. Then we derive (optimal) isoperimetric inequalities. Finally we deal with spherically symmetric measures. We recover and improve many previous results.

Lyapunov conditions for logarithmic Sobolev and Super Poincaré inequality

We show how to use Lyapunov functions to obtain functional inequalities which are stronger than Poincaré inequality (for instance logarithmic Sobolev or $F$-Sobolev). The case of Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities was studied in Bakry and al. This approach allows us to recover and extend in an unified way some known criteria in the euclidean case (Bakry-Emery, Wang, Kusuoka-Stroock ...).

Trends to Equilibrium in Total Variation Distance

This paper presents different approaches, based on functional inequalities, to study the speed of convergence in total variation distance of ergodic diffusion processes with initial law satisfying a given integrability condition. To this end, we give a general upper bound "à la Pinsker" enabling us to study our problem firstly via usual functional inequalities (Poincaré inequality, weak Poincaré,...) and truncation procedure, and secondly through the introduction of new functional inequalities $\Ipsi$. These $\Ipsi$-inequalities are characterized through measure-capacity conditions and $F$-Sobolev inequalities. A direct study of the decay of Hellinger distance is also proposed. Finally we show how a dynamic approach based on reversing the role of the semi-group and the invariant measure can lead to interesting bounds.

Rate of Converrgence for ergodic continuous Markov processes : Lyapunov versus Poincare

We study the relationship between two classical approaches for quantitative ergodic properties : the first one based on Lyapunov type controls and popularized by Meyn and Tweedie, the second one based on functional inequalities (of Poincaré type). We show that they can be linked through new inequalities (Lyapunov-Poincaré inequalities). Explicit examples for diffusion processes are studied, improving some results in the literature. The example of the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation recently studied by Hérau-Nier, Helffer-Nier and Villani is in particular discussed in the final section.

Isoperimetry between exponential and Gaussian

We study in details the isoperimetric profile of product probability measures with tails between the exponential and the Gaussian regime. In particular we exhibit many examples where coordinate half-spaces are approximate solutions of the isoperimetric problem.

Weak logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and entropic convergence

In this paper we introduce and study a weakened form of logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in connection with various others functional inequalities (weak Poincaré inequalities, general Beckner inequalities...). We also discuss the quantitative behaviour of relative entropy along a symmetric diffusion semi-group. In particular, we exhibit an example where Poincaré inequality can not be used for deriving entropic convergence whence weak logarithmic Sobolev inequality ensures the result.

Probabilistic approach for granular media equations in the non uniformly convex case

We use here a particle system to prove a convergence result as well as a deviation inequality for solutions of granular media equation when the confinement potential and the interaction potential are no more uniformly convex. Proof is straightforward, simplifying deeply proofs of Carrillo-McCann-Villani \cite{CMV,CMV2} and completing results of Malrieu \cite{malrieu03} in the uniformly convex case. It relies on an uniform propagation of chaos property and a direct control in Wasserstein distance of solutions starting with different initial measures. The deviation inequality is obtained via a $T\_1$ transportation cost inequality replacing the logarithmic Sobolev inequality which is no more clearly dimension free.

Deviation bounds for additive functionals of Markov process

In this paper we derive non asymptotic deviation bounds for $$¶_ν(|\frac 1t \int_0^t V(X_s) ds - \int V dμ| \geq R)$$ where $X$ is a $μ$ stationary and ergodic Markov process and $V$ is some $μ$ integrable function. These bounds are obtained under various moments assumptions for $V$, and various regularity assumptions for $μ$. Regularity means here that $μ$ may satisfy various functional inequalities (F-Sobolev, generalized Poincaré etc...).

Deviations bounds and conditional principles for thin sets

The aim of this paper is to use non asymptotic bounds for the probability of rare events in the Sanov theorem, in order to study the asymptotics in conditional limit theorems (Gibbs conditioning principle for thin sets). Applications to stochastic mechanics or calibration problems for diffusion processes are discussed.
