Perturbations of Q-balls: from spectral structure to radiation pressure

We investigate Q-balls in a 1+1 dimensional complex scalar field theory. We find that the relaxation of a squashed Q-ball is dominated by the decay of a normal mode through nonlinear coupling to scattering modes and a long-lasting quasi-normal mode. We also study how these Q-balls behave when exposed to scalar radiation, finding that for certain conditions they can experience negative radiation pressure.

From tree- to loop-simplicity in affine Toda theories II: higher-order poles and cut decompositions

Recently we showed how, in two-dimensional scalar theories, one-loop threshold diagrams can be cut into the product of one or more tree-level diagrams arXiv:2206.09368. Using this method on the ADE series of Toda models, we computed the double- and single-pole coefficients of the Laurent expansion of the S-matrix around a pole of arbitrary even order, finding agreement with the bootstrapped results. Here we generalise the cut method explained in arXiv:2206.09368 to multiple loops and use it to simplify large networks of singular diagrams. We observe that only a small number of cut diagrams survive and contribute to the expected bootstrapped result, while most of them cancel each other out through a mechanism inherited from the tree-level integrability of these models. The simplification mechanism between cut diagrams inside networks is reminiscent of Gauss's theorem in the space of Feynman diagrams.

Collisions of weakly-bound kinks in the Christ-Lee model

We investigate soliton collisions a one-parameter family of scalar field theories in 1+1 dimensions which was first discussed by Christ and Lee. The models have a sextic potential with three local minima, and for suitably small values of the parameter its kinks have an internal structure in the form of two weakly-bound subkinks. We show that for these values of the parameter kink collisions are best understood as an independent sequence of collisions of these subkinks, and that a static mode analysis is not enough to explain resonant structures emerging in this model. We also emphasise the role of radiation and oscillon formation in the collision process.

From tree- to loop-simplicity in affine Toda theories I: Landau singularities and their subleading coefficients

Various features of the even order poles appearing in the S-matrices of simply-laced affine Toda field theories are analysed in some detail. In particular, the coefficients of first- and second-order singularities appearing in the Laurent expansion of the S-matrix around a general $2N^{\rm th}$ order pole are derived in a universal way using perturbation theory at one loop. We show how to cut loop diagrams contributing to the pole into particular products of tree-level graphs that depend on the on-shell geometry of the loop; in this way, we recover the coefficients of the Laurent expansion around the pole exploiting tree-level integrability properties of the theory. The analysis is independent of the particular simply-laced theory considered, and all the results agree with those obtained in the conjectured bootstrapped S-matrices of the ADE series of theories.

Tree level integrability in 2d quantum field theories and affine Toda models

We investigate the perturbative integrability of massive (1+1)-dimensional bosonic quantum field theories, focusing on the conditions for them to have a purely elastic S-matrix, with no particle production and diagonal scattering, at tree level. For theories satisfying what we call `simply-laced scattering conditions', by which we mean that poles in inelastic $2$ to $2$ processes cancel in pairs, and poles in allowed processes are only due to one on-shell propagating particle at a time, the requirement that all inelastic amplitudes must vanish is shown to imply the so-called area rule, connecting the $3$-point couplings $C^{(3)}_{abc}$ to the masses $m_a$, $m_b$, $m_c$ of the coupled particles in a universal way. We prove that the constraints we find are universally satisfied by all affine Toda theories, connecting pole cancellations in amplitudes to properties of the underlying root systems, and develop a number of tools that we expect will be relevant for the study of loop amplitudes.

Resonance structures in kink-antikink collisions in a deformed sine-Gordon model

We study kink-antikink collisions in a model which interpolates smoothly between the completely integrable sine-Gordon theory, the $\phi^4$ model, and a $\phi^6$-like model with three degenerate vacua. We find a rich variety of behaviours, including integrability breaking, resonance windows with increasingly irregular patterns, and new types of windows near the $\phi^6$-like regime. False vacua, extra kink modes and kink fragmentation play important roles in the explanations of these phenomena. Our numerical studies are backed up by detailed analytical considerations.

Geometric aspects of the ODE/IM correspondence

This review describes a link between Lax operators, embedded surfaces and Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for integrable quantum field theories. This surprising connection between classical and quantum models is undoubtedly one of the most striking discoveries that emerged from the off-critical generalisation of the ODE/IM correspondence, which initially involved only conformal invariant quantum field theories. We will mainly focus of the KdV and sinh-Gordon models. However, various aspects of other interesting systems, such as affine Toda field theories and non-linear sigma models, will be mentioned. We also discuss the implications of these ideas in the AdS/CFT context, involving minimal surfaces and Wilson loops. This work is a follow-up of the ODE/IM review published more than ten years ago by JPA, before the discovery of its off-critical generalisation and the corresponding geometrical interpretation. (Partially based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School 2017, in Dublin.)

Staccato radiation from the decay of large amplitude oscillons

We study the decay of large amplitude, almost periodic breather-like states in a deformed sine-Gordon model in one spatial dimension. We discover that these objects decay in a staggered fashion via a series of transitions, during which higher harmonics are released as short, staccato bursts of radiation. Further, we argue that this phenomenon is not restricted to one particular model, and that similar mechanisms of radiative decay of long-lived oscillating states can be observed for a wide class of physical systems, including the $\phi^6$ model.

Resonant kink-antikink scattering through quasinormal modes

We investigate the role that quasinormal modes can play in kink-antikink collisions, via an example based on a perturbation of the $ϕ^4$ model. We find that narrow quasinormal modes can store energy during collision processes and return it back to the translational degrees of freedom. Quasinormal modes also decay, which leads to energy leakage, causing a closing of resonance windows and an increase of the critical velocity. We observe similar phenomena in an effective model, a small modification of the collective-coordinate approach to the $ϕ^4$ model.

Boundary scattering in the phi^4 model

We study boundary scattering in the $ϕ^4$ model on a half-line with a one-parameter family of Neumann-type boundary conditions. A rich variety of phenomena is observed, which extends previously-studied behaviour on the full line to include regimes of near-elastic scattering, the restoration of a missing scattering window, and the creation of a kink or oscillon through the collision-induced decay of a metastable boundary state. We also study the decay of the vibrational boundary mode, and explore different scenarios for its relaxation and for the creation of kinks.

A Bound on the Pseudospectrum of the Harmonic Oscillator with Imaginary Cubic Potential

We are concerned with the non-normal Schrödinger operator $$ H=-Δ+V $$ on $ L^2(\mathbb R^n)$, where $V\in W^{1,\infty}_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $\operatorname{Re} (V(x))\ge c|x|^2-d$ for some $c,d>0$. The spectrum of this operator is discrete and contained in the positive half plane. In general, the $\varepsilon$-pseudospectrum of $H$ will have an unbounded component for any $\varepsilon>0$ and thus will not approximate the spectrum in a global sense. By exploiting the fact that the semigroup $e^{-tH}$ is immediately compact, we show a complementary result, namely that for every $δ>0$, $R>0$ there exists an $\varepsilon>0$ such that the $\varepsilon$-pseudospectrum $$ σ_\varepsilon(H)\subset \{z:\operatorname{Re}(z) \geq R\}\cup\bigcup_{λ\inσ(H)}\{z:|z-λ|<δ\}. $$ In particular, the unbounded part of the pseudospectrum escapes towards $+\infty$ as $\varepsilon$ decreases. Additionally, we give two examples of non-selfadjoint Schrödinger operators outside of our class and study their pseudospectra in more detail.

Breaking integrability at the boundary: the sine-Gordon model with Robin boundary conditions

We explore boundary scattering in the sine-Gordon model with a non-integrable family of Robin boundary conditions. The soliton content of the field after collision is analysed using a numerical implementation of the direct scattering problem associated with the inverse scattering method. We find that an antikink may be reflected into various combinations of an antikink, a kink, and one or more breathers, depending on the values of the initial antikink velocity and a parameter associated with the boundary condition. In addition we observe regions with an intricate resonance structure arising from the creation of an intermediate breather whose recollision with the boundary is highly dependent on the breather phase.

Form factor relocalisation and interpolating renormalisation group flows from the staircase model

We investigate the staircase model, introduced by Aliosha Zamolodchikov through an analytic continuation of the sinh-Gordon S-matrix to describe interpolating flows between minimal models of conformal field theory in two dimensions. Applying the form factor expansion and the c-theorem, we show that the resulting c-function has the same physical content as that found by Zamolodchikov from the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. This turns out to be a consequence of a nontrivial underlying mechanism, which leads to an interesting localisation pattern for the spectral integrals giving the multi-particle contributions. We demonstrate several aspects of this form factor relocalisation, which suggests a novel approach to the construction of form factors and spectral sums in integrable renormalisation group flows with non-diagonal scattering.

The Bethe Ansatz and the Tzitzéica-Bullough-Dodd equation

The theory of classically integrable nonlinear wave equations, and the Bethe Ansatz systems describing massive quantum field theories defined on an infinite cylinder, are related by an important mathematical correspondence that still lacks a satisfactory physical interpretation. In this paper we shall describe this link for the case of the classical and quantum versions of the (Tzitzéica-)Bullough-Dodd model.

Quasi-exact solvability, resonances and trivial monodromy in ordinary differential equations

A correspondence between the sextic anharmonic oscillator and a pair of third-order ordinary differential equations is used to investigate the phenomenon of quasi-exact solvability for eigenvalue problems involving differential operators with order greater than two. In particular, links with Bender-Dunne polynomials and resonances between independent solutions are observed for certain second-order cases, and extended to the higher-order problems.

Kink-antikink collisions in the phi^6 model

We study kink-antikink collisions in the one-dimensional non-integrable scalar phi^6 model. Although the single-kink solutions for this model do not possess an internal vibrational mode, our simulations reveal a resonant scattering structure, thereby providing a counterexample to the standard belief that existence of such a mode is a necessary condition for multi-bounce resonances in general kink-antikink collisions. We investigate the two-bounce windows in detail, and present evidence that this structure is caused by existence of bound states in the spectrum of small oscillations about a combined kink-antikink configuration.
