Exact non-stationary solutions of the Euler equations in two and three dimensions

We develop, via Arnold's geometric framework, a mechanism for constructing explicit, smooth, global-in-time, and typically non-stationary solutions of the incompressible Euler equations. The approach introduces a notion of generalized Coriolis force, whose spectrum underlies the construction of these solutions. We recover classical exact solutions such as Kelvin and Rossby-Haurwitz waves, while also producing new explicit examples on curved surfaces and three-dimensional manifolds including the round three-sphere. Furthermore, we obtain a complete classification in two dimensions and a partial classification in three dimensions of the Riemannian manifolds that admit such solutions. The method is in fact formulated in the general Euler-Arnold setting and yields a simple criterion for non-stationarity.

Singular Sets of Riemannian Exponential Maps in Hydrodynamics

We prove that the singular sets for the Lagrangian solution maps of the two-dimensional inviscid Euler and generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations are Gaussian null sets. To achieve this we carry out a spectral analysis of an operator related to the coadjoint representation of the algebra of divergence-free vector fields on the fluid domain. In particular, we establish sharp results on the Schatten-von Neumann class to which this operator belongs. Furthermore, its failure to be compact is directly connected to the absence of Fredholm properties of the corresponding Lagrangian solution maps. We show that, for the three-dimensional Euler equations and the standard surface quasi-geostrophic equation, this failure is in fact essential.

Completeness and geodesic distance properties for fractional Sobolev metrics on spaces of immersed curves

We investigate the geometry of the space of immersed closed curves equipped with reparametrization-invariant Riemannian metrics; the metrics we consider are Sobolev metrics of possible fractional order $q\in [0,\infty)$. We establish the critical Sobolev index on the metric for several key geometric properties. Our first main result shows that the Riemannian metric induces a metric space structure if and only if $q>1/2$. Our second main result shows that the metric is geodesically-complete (i.e., the geodesic equation is globally well-posed) if $q>3/2$, whereas if $q<3/2$ then finite-time blowup may occur. The geodesic-completeness for $q>3/2$ is obtained by proving metric-completeness of the space of $H^q$-immersed curves with the distance induced by the Riemannian metric.

Geometric Analysis of the Generalized Surface Quasi-Geostrophic Equations

We investigate the geometry of a family of equations in two dimensions which interpolate between the Euler equations of ideal hydrodynamics and the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation. This family can be realised as geodesic equations on groups of diffeomorphisms. We show precisely when the corresponding Riemannian exponential map is non-linear Fredholm of index 0. We further illustrate this by examining the distribution of conjugate points in these settings via a Morse theoretic approach.

Two-Point Boundary Value Problems on Diffeomorphism Groups

We consider a variety of geodesic equations on Sobolev diffeomorphism groups, including the equations of ideal hydrodynamics. We prove that solutions of the corresponding two-point boundary value problems are precisely as smooth as their boundary conditions. We further utilise this regularity property to construct continuously differentiable exponential maps in the Frech\'et setting.
