Fast computation of exact confidence intervals for randomized experiments with binary outcomes

Given a randomized experiment with binary outcomes, exact confidence intervals for the average causal effect of the treatment can be computed through a series of permutation tests. This approach requires minimal assumptions and is valid for all sample sizes, as it does not rely on large-sample approximations such as those implied by the central limit theorem. We show that these confidence intervals can be found in $O(n \log n)$ permutation tests in the case of balanced designs, where the treatment and control groups have equal sizes, and $O(n^2)$ permutation tests in the general case. Prior to this work, the most efficient known constructions required $O(n^2)$ such tests in the balanced case [Li and Ding, 2016], and $O(n^4)$ tests in the general case [Rigdon and Hudgens, 2015]. Our results thus facilitate exact inference as a viable option for randomized experiments far larger than those accessible by previous methods. We also generalize our construction to produce confidence intervals for other causal estimands, including the relative risk ratio and odds ratio, yielding similar computational gains.

Mobility Edge for the Anderson Model on the Bethe Lattice

We pinpoint the spectral decomposition for the Anderson tight-binding model with an unbounded random potential on the Bethe lattice of sufficiently large degree. We prove that there exist a finite number of mobility edges separating intervals of pure-point spectrum from intervals of absolutely continuous spectrum, confirming a prediction of Abou-Chacra, Thouless, and Anderson. A central component of our proof is a monotonicity result for the leading eigenvalue of a certain transfer operator, which governs the decay rate of fractional moments for the tight-binding model's off-diagonal resolvent entries.

Randomization-based confidence sets for the local average treatment effect

We consider the problem of generating confidence sets in randomized experiments with noncompliance. We show that a refinement of a randomization-based procedure proposed by Imbens and Rosenbaum (2005) has desirable properties. Namely, we show that using a studentized Anderson--Rubin-type statistic as a test statistic yields confidence sets that are finite-sample exact under treatment effect homogeneity, and remain asymptotically valid for the Local Average Treatment Effect when the treatment effect is heterogeneous. We provide a uniform analysis of this procedure and efficient algorithms to construct the confidence set.

Optimal rigidity and maximum of the characteristic polynomial of Wigner matrices

We determine to leading order the maximum of the characteristic polynomial for Wigner matrices and $β$-ensembles. In the special case of Gaussian-divisible Wigner matrices, our method provides universality of the maximum up to tightness. These are the first universal results on the Fyodorov--Hiary--Keating conjectures for these models, and in particular answer the question of optimal rigidity for the spectrum of Wigner matrices. Our proofs combine dynamical techniques for universality of eigenvalue statistics with ideas surrounding the maxima of log-correlated fields and Gaussian multiplicative chaos.

Formulas for odd zeta values and powers of $π$

Plouffe conjectured rapidly converging series formulas for $π^{2n+1}$ and $ζ(2n+1)$ for small values of $n$. We find the general pattern for all nonnegative integer values of $n$ and offer a proof.

Quenched large deviation principles for random projections of $\ell_p^n$ balls

Let $(k_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ be a sequence of positive integers growing to infinity at a sublinear rate, $k_n \rightarrow \infty$ and $k_n/n \rightarrow 0$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Given a sequence of $n$-dimensional random vectors $\{Y^{(n)}\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ belonging to a certain class, which includes uniform distributions on suitably scaled $\ell_p^n$-balls or $\ell_p^n$-spheres, $p \geq 2$, and product distributions with sub-Gaussian marginals, we study the large deviations behavior of the corresponding sequence of $k_n$-dimensional orthogonal projections $n^{-1/2} \boldsymbol{a}_{n,k_n} Y^{(n)}$, where $\boldsymbol{a}_{n,k_n}$ is an $(n \times k_n)$-dimensional projection matrix lying in the Stiefel manifold of orthonormal $k_n$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. For almost every sequence of projection matrices, we establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for the corresponding sequence of projections, with a fairly explicit rate function that does not depend on the sequence of projection matrices. As corollaries, we also obtain quenched LDPs for sequences of $\ell_2$-norms and $\ell_\infty$-norms of the coordinates of the projections. Past work on LDPs for projections with growing dimension has mainly focused on the annealed setting, where one also averages over the random projection matrix, chosen from the Haar measure, in which case the coordinates of the projection are exchangeable. The quenched setting lacks such symmetry properties, and gives rise to significant new challenges in the setting of growing projection dimension. Along the way, we establish new Gaussian approximation results on the Stiefel manifold that may be of independent interest. Such LDPs are of relevance in asymptotic convex geometry, statistical physics and high-dimensional statistics.

Mobility Edge for Lévy Matrices

Lévy matrices are symmetric random matrices whose entry distributions lie in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law. For $α< 1$, predictions from the physics literature suggest that high-dimensional Lévy matrices should display the following phase transition at a point $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$. Eigenvectors corresponding to eigenvalues in $(-E_{\mathrm{mob}},E_{\mathrm{mob}})$ should be delocalized, while eigenvectors corresponding to eigenvalues outside of this interval should be localized. Further, $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ is given by the (presumably unique) positive solution to $λ(E,α) =1$, where $λ$ is an explicit function of $E$ and $α$. We prove the following results about high-dimensional Lévy matrices. (1) If $λ(E,α) > 1$ then eigenvectors with eigenvalues near $E$ are delocalized. (2) If $E$ is in the connected components of the set $\big\{ x : λ(x,α) < 1 \big\}$ containing $\pm \infty$, then eigenvectors with eigenvalues near $E$ are localized. (3) For $α$ sufficiently near $0$ or $1$, there is a unique positive solution $E = E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ to $λ(E,α) = 1$, demonstrating the existence of a (unique) phase transition. (a) If $α$ is close to $0$, then $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ scales approximately as $|\log α|^{-2/α}$. (b) If $α$ is close to $1$, then $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ scales as $(1-α)^{-1}$. Our proofs proceed through an analysis of the local weak limit of a Lévy matrix, given by a certain infinite-dimensional, heavy-tailed operator on the Poisson weighted infinite tree.

Fluctuations in local quantum unique ergodicity for generalized Wigner matrices

We study the eigenvector mass distribution for generalized Wigner matrices on a set of coordinates $I$, where $N^\varepsilon \le | I | \le N^{1- \varepsilon}$, and prove it converges to a Gaussian at every energy level, including the edge, as $N\rightarrow \infty$. The key technical input is a four-point decorrelation estimate for eigenvectors of matrices with a large Gaussian component. Its proof is an application of the maximum principle to a new set of moment observables satisfying parabolic evolution equations. Additionally, we prove high-probability Quantum Unique Ergodicity and Quantum Weak Mixing bounds for all eigenvectors and all deterministic sets of entries using a novel bootstrap argument.

An Improved Lower Bound for Sparse Reconstruction from Subsampled Walsh Matrices

We give a short argument that yields a new lower bound on the number of subsampled rows from a bounded, orthonormal matrix necessary to form a matrix with the restricted isometry property. We show that a matrix formed by uniformly subsampling rows of an $N \times N$ Walsh matrix contains a $K$-sparse vector in the kernel, unless the number of subsampled rows is $Ω(K \log K \log (N/K))$ -- our lower bound applies whenever $\min(K, N/K) > \log^C N$. Containing a sparse vector in the kernel precludes not only the restricted isometry property, but more generally the application of those matrices for uniform sparse recovery.

Single eigenvalue fluctuations of general Wigner-type matrices

We consider the single eigenvalue fluctuations of random matrices of general Wigner-type, under a one-cut assumption on the density of states. For eigenvalues in the bulk, we prove that the asymptotic fluctuations of a single eigenvalue around its classical location are Gaussian with a universal variance. Our method is based on a dynamical approach to mesoscopic linear spectral statistics which reduces their behavior on short scales to that on larger scales. We prove a central limit theorem for linear spectral statistics on larger scales via resolvent techniques and show that for certain classes of test functions, the leading-order contribution to the variance agrees with the GOE/GUE cases.

Existence of the free energy for heavy-tailed spin glasses

We study the free energy of a mean-field spin glass whose coupling distribution has power law tails. Under the assumption that the couplings have infinite variance and finite mean, we show that the thermodynamic limit of the quenched free energy exists, and that the free energy is self-averaging.

Optimal Delocalization for Generalized Wigner Matrices

We study the eigenvectors of generalized Wigner matrices with subexponential entries and prove that they delocalize at the optimal rate with overwhelming probability. We also prove high probability delocalization bounds with sharp constants. Our proof uses an analysis of the eigenvector moment flow introduced by Bourgade and Yau (2017) to bound logarithmic moments of eigenvector entries for random matrices with small Gaussian components. We then extend this control to all generalized Wigner matrices by comparison arguments based on a framework of regularized eigenvectors, level repulsion, and the observable employed by Landon, Lopatto, and Marcinek (2018) to compare extremal eigenvalue statistics. Additionally, we prove level repulsion and eigenvalue overcrowding estimates for the entire spectrum, which may be of independent interest.

Tail bounds for gaps between eigenvalues of sparse random matrices

We prove the first eigenvalue repulsion bound for sparse random matrices. As a consequence, we show that these matrices have simple spectrum, improving the range of sparsity and error probability from the work of the second author and Vu. As an application of our tail bounds, we show that for sparse Erdős--Rényi graphs, weak and strong nodal domains are the same, answering a question of Dekel, Lee, and Linial.

Eigenvector Statistics of Lévy Matrices

We analyze statistics for eigenvector entries of heavy-tailed random symmetric matrices (also called Lévy matrices) whose associated eigenvalues are sufficiently small. We show that the limiting law of any such entry is non-Gaussian, given by the product of a normal distribution with another random variable that depends on the location of the corresponding eigenvalue. Although the latter random variable is typically non-explicit, for the median eigenvector it is given by the inverse of a one-sided stable law. Moreover, we show that different entries of the same eigenvector are asymptotically independent, but that there are nontrivial correlations between eigenvectors with nearby eigenvalues. Our findings contrast sharply with the known eigenvector behavior for Wigner matrices and sparse random graphs.

Universality of the least singular value for the sum of random matrices

We consider the least singular value of $M = R^* X T + U^* YV$, where $R,T,U,V$ are independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices and $X, Y$ are deterministic diagonal matrices. Under weak conditions on $X$ and $Y$, we show that the limiting distribution of the least singular value of $M$, suitably rescaled, is the same as the limiting distribution for the least singular value of a matrix of i.i.d. gaussian random variables. Our proof is based on the dynamical method used by Che and Landon to study the local spectral statistics of sums of Hermitian matrices.

Comparison theorem for some extremal eigenvalue statistics

We introduce a method for the comparison of some extremal eigenvalue statistics of random matrices. For example, it allows one to compare the maximal eigenvalue gap in the bulk of two generalized Wigner ensembles, provided that the first four moments of their matrix entries match. As an application, we extend results of Bourgade--Ben Arous and Feng--Wei that identify the limit of the maximal eigenvalue gap in the bulk of the GUE to all complex Hermitian generalized Wigner matrices.
