Wave Functions of the Proton Ground State in the Presence of a Uniform Background Magnetic Field in Lattice QCD

We calculate the probability distributions of quarks in the ground state of the proton, and how they are affected in the presence of a constant background magnetic field. We focus on wave functions in the Landau and Coulomb gauges. We observe the formation of a scalar u-d diquark clustering. The overall distortion of the quark probability distribution under a very large magnetic field, as demanded by the quantisation conditions on the field, is quite small. The effect is to elongate the distributions along the external field axis while localizing the remainder of the distribution.

Role of center vortices in chiral symmetry breaking in SU(3) gauge theory

We study the behavior of the AsqTad quark propagator in Landau gauge on SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge configurations under the removal of center vortices. In SU(2) gauge theory, center vortices have been observed to generate chiral symmetry breaking and dominate the infrared behavior of the quark propagator. In contrast, we report a weak dependence on the vortex content of the gauge configurations, including the survival of dynamical mass generation on configurations with vanishing string tension.

Impact of stout-link smearing in lattice fermion actions

The impact of stout-link smearing in lattice fermion actions is examined through the consideration of the mass and renormalization functions of the overlap quark propagator over a variety of smeared configurations. Up to six sweeps of stout-link smearing are investigated. For heavy quark masses, the quark propagator is strongly affected by the smearing procedure. For moderate masses, the effect appears to be negligible. A small effect is seen for light quark masses, where dynamical mass generation is suppressed through the smearing procedure.

Stout-link smearing in lattice fermion actions

The properties of the momentum space quark propagator in Landau gauge are studied for the overlap quark action in quenched lattice QCD. Numerical calculations are performed over four ensembles of gauge configurations, where three are smeared using either 1, 3, or 6 sweeps of stout-link smearing. We calculate the non-perturbative wave function renormalization function $Z(p)$ and the non-perturbative mass function $M(p)$ for a variety of bare quark masses. We find that the wave-function renormalization function is slightly sensitive to the number of stout-link smearing sweeps. For the mass function we find the effect of the stout-link smearing algorithm to be small for moderate to light bare quark masses. For a heavy bare quark mass we find a strong dependence on the number of smearing sweeps.

Center vortices and the quark propagator in SU(2) gauge theory

We study the behavior of the AsqTad quark propagator in Landau gauge on quenched SU(2) gauge configurations under the removal of center vortices. In contrast to recent results in SU(3), we clearly see the infrared enhancement of the mass function disappear if center vortices are removed, a sign of the intimate relation between center vortices and chiral symmetry breaking in SU(2) gauge-field theory. These results provide a benchmark with which to interpret the SU(3) results. In addition, we consider vortex-only configurations. On those, the quark dressing function behaves roughly as on the full configurations, and the mass function picks up an almost linear momentum dependence.

A Numerical Approach to Coulomb Gauge QCD

We calculate the ghost two-point function in Coulomb gauge QCD with a simple model vacuum gluon wavefunction using Monte Carlo integration. This approach extends the previous analytic studies of the ghost propagator with this ansatz, where a ladder-rainbow expansion was unavoidable for calculating the path integral over gluon field configurations. The new approach allows us to study the possible critical behavior of the coupling constant, as well as the Coulomb potential derived from the ghost dressing function. We demonstrate that IR enhancement of the ghost correlator or Coulomb form factor fails to quantitatively reproduce confinement using Gaussian vacuum wavefunctional.

Scaling behavior and positivity violation of the gluon propagator in full QCD

The Landau-gauge gluon propagator is studied using the coarse and fine dynamical MILC configurations. The effects of dynamical quarks are clearly visible and lead to a reduction of the nonperturbative infrared enhancement relative to the quenched case. Lattice spacing effects are studied and found to be small. The gluon spectral function is shown to clearly violate positivity in both quenched and full QCD.

Unquenching effects in the quark and gluon propagator

In this work we examine the Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) overlap quark propagator and the gluon propagator on both dynamical and quenched lattices. The tadpole-improved Luscher-Weisz gauge action is used in both cases. The dynamical gauge fields use the FLIC fermion action for the sea quark contribution. We observe that the presence of sea quarks causes a suppression of the mass function, quark renormalization function and gluon dressing function in the infrared. The ultraviolet physics is unaffected.

Scaling behavior of quark propagator in full QCD

We study the scaling behavior of the quark propagator on two lattices with similar physical volume in Landau gauge with 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks in order to test whether we are close to the continuum limit for these lattices. We use configurations generated with an improved staggered (``Asqtad'') action by the MILC collaboration. The calculations are performed on $28^3\times 96$ lattices with lattice spacing $a = 0.09$ fm and on $20^3\times 64$ lattices with lattice spacing $a = 0.12$ fm. We calculate the quark mass function, $M(q^2)$, and the wave-function renormalization function, $Z(q^2)$, for a variety of bare quark masses. Comparing the behavior of these functions on the two sets of lattices we find that both $Z(q^2)$ and $M(q^2)$ show little sensitivity to the ultraviolet cutoff.

Effects of dynamical sea-quarks on quark and gluon propagators

We present an unquenched calculation of the quark propagator in Landau gauge with 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks. We study the scaling behavior of the quark propagator in full QCD on two lattices with different lattice spacings and similar physical volume. We use configurations generated with an improved staggered (``Asqtad'') action by the MILC collaboration.

Unquenched quark propagator in Landau gauge

We present an unquenched calculation of the quark propagator in Landau gauge with 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks. We use configurations generated with an improved staggered (``Asqtad'') action by the MILC collaboration. This quark action has been seen to have excellent rotational symmetry and scaling properties in the quenched quark propagator. Quenched and dynamical calculations are performed on a $20^3\times 64$ lattice with a nominal lattice spacing of $a = 0.125$ fm. The matched quenched and dynamical lattices allow us to investigate the relatively subtle sea quark effects, and even in the quenched case the physical volume of these lattices gives access to lower momenta than our previous study. We calculate the quark mass function and renormalization function for a variety of valence and sea quark masses.

Quark propagator in Landau and Laplacian gauges with overlap fermions

The properties of the momentum space quark propagator in Landau gauge and Gribov copy free Laplacian gauge are studied for the overlap quark action in quenched lattice QCD. Numerical calculations are done on two lattices with different lattice spacing $a$ and the same physical volume. We have calculated the nonperturbative wave function renormalization function $Z(q)$ and the nonperturbative mass function $M(p)$ for a variety of bare quark masses and perform a simple linear extrapolation to the chiral limit. We focus on the comparison of the behavior of $Z(q)$ and $M(p)$ in the chiral limit in the two gauge fixing schemes as well as the behavior on two lattices with different lattice spacing $a$. We find that the mass functions $M(p)$ are very similar for the two gauges while the wave-function renormalization function $Z(q)$ is more strongly infrared suppressed in the Laplacian gauge than in the Landau gauge on the finer lattice. For Laplacian gauge, it seems that the finite $a$ error is large on the coarse lattice which has a lattice spacing $a$ of about 0.124 fm.

The FLIC Overlap Quark Propagator

FLIC overlap fermions are a variant of the standard (Wilson) overlap action, with the FLIC (Fat Link Irrelevant Clover) action as the overlap kernel rather than the Wilson action. The structure of the FLIC overlap fermion propagator in momentum space is studied, and a comparison against previous studies of the Wilson overlap propagator in quenched QCD is performed. To explore the scaling properties of the propagator for the two actions, numerical calculations are performed in Landau Gauge across three lattices with different lattice spacing $a$ and similar physical volumes. We find that at light quark masses the acti ons agree in both the infrared and the ultraviolet, but at heavier masses some disagreement in the ultraviolet appears. This is attributed to the two action s having different discretisation errors with the FLIC overlap providing superior performance in this regime. Both actions scale reasonably, but some scaling violations are observed.

Quark-gluon vertex in arbitrary kinematics

We compute the quark-gluon vertex in quenched lattice QCD, in the Landau gauge using an off-shell mean-field O(a)-improved fermion action. The complete vertex is computed in two specific kinematical limits, while the Dirac-vector part is computed for arbitrary kinematics. We find a nontrivial and rich tensor structure, including a substantial infrared enhancement of the interaction strength regardless of kinematics.

Scaling behavior of the overlap quark propagator in Landau gauge

The properties of the momentum space quark propagator in Landau gauge are examined for the overlap quark action in quenched lattice QCD. Numerical calculations are done on three lattices with different lattice spacings and similar physical volumes to explore the approach of the quark propagator toward the continuum limit. We have calculated the nonperturbative momentum-dependent wave function renormalization function Z(p) and the nonperturbative mass function M(p) for a variety of bare quark masses and perform an extrapolation to the chiral limit. We find the behavior of Z(p) and M(p) are in reasonable agreement between the two finer lattices in the chiral limit, however the data suggest that an even finer lattice is desirable. The large momentum behavior is examined to determine the quark condensate.

Chromo-Electric flux tubes

The profiles of the chromo-electric field generated by static quark-antiquark, $Q{\bar Q}$ and three-quark, $QQQ$ sources are calculated in Coulomb gauge. Using a variational ansatz for the ground state, we show that a flux tube-like structure emerges and combines to the ``Y''-shape field profile for three static quarks. The properties of the chromo-electric field are, however, not expected to be the same as those of the full action density or the Wilson line and the differences are discussed.

Unquenched Gluon Propagator in Landau Gauge

Using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) we perform an unquenched calculation of the gluon propagator in Landau gauge. We use configurations generated with the AsqTad quark action by the MILC collaboration for the dynamical quarks and compare the gluon propagator of quenched QCD (i.e., the pure Yang-Mills gluon propagator) with that of 2+1 flavor QCD. The effects of the dynamical quarks are clearly visible and lead to a significant reduction of the nonperturbative infrared enhancement relative to the quenched case.

Infrared and ultraviolet properties of the Landau gauge quark propagator

We present a current summary of a program to study the quark propagator using lattice QCD. We use the Overlap and ``Asqtad'' quark actions on a number of lattice ensembles to assess systematic errors. We comment on the place of this work amongst studies of QCD Green's functions in other formulations. A preliminary calculation of the running quark mass is presented.
