Influences of Uncertainties in Thermodynamic Models on Pareto-optimized Dividing Wall Columns for Ideal Mixtures

This article examines the effect of individual and combined uncertainties in thermodynamic models on the performance of simulated, steady-state Pareto-optimized Dividing Wall Columns. It is a follow-up of the previous work analogously treating deviations in process variables. Such deviations and uncertainties that may even be unknown during the design process can significantly influence the separation result. However, other than process variables, uncertainties in thermodynamics are usually not systematically considered during design. For the first time, the effects of uncertain thermodynamic properties on Pareto-optimized DWCs with different numbers of stages and for different mixtures are presented and compared qualitatively and quantitatively. Depending on the number of stages and mixture characteristics, particularly critical properties are identified. On the one hand, this provides information on aspects requiring special attention prior to design, and on the other hand, it also indicates in which section of the DWC a stage supplement might be most beneficial.

A normal form for bases of finite-dimensional vector spaces

Most algorithms constructing bases of finite-dimensional vector spaces return basis vectors which, apart from orthogonality, do not show any special properties. While every basis is sufficient to define the vector space, not all bases are equally suited to unravel properties of the problem to be solved. In this paper a normal form for bases of finite-dimensional vector spaces is introduced which may prove very useful in the context of understanding the structure of the problem in which the basis appears in a step towards the solution. This normal form may be viewed as a new normal form for matrices of full column rank.

Unifying leptogenesis, dark matter and high-energy neutrinos with right-handed neutrino mixing via Higgs portal

We revisit a model in which neutrino masses and mixing are described by a two right-handed (RH) neutrino seesaw scenario, implying a strictly hierarchical light neutrino spectrum. A third decoupled RH neutrino, $N_{\rm DM}$ with mass $M_{\rm DM}$, plays the role of cold dark matter (DM) and is produced by the mixing with a source RH neutrino, $N_{\rm S}$ with mass $M_{\rm S}$, induced by Higgs portal interactions. The same interactions are also responsible for $N_{\rm DM}$ decays. We discuss in detail the constraints coming from DM abundance and stability conditions, showing that in the hierarchical case ($M_{\rm DM} \gg M_{\rm S}$) there is an allowed window on $M_{\rm DM}$, which necessarily implies a contribution from DM decays to the high-energy neutrino flux recently detected by IceCube. We also show how the model can explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis in the quasi-degenerate limit. In this case, the DM mass should be within the range 300 GeV $\lesssim M_{\rm S} < M_{\rm DM} \lesssim$ 10 PeV. We discuss the specific properties of this high-energy neutrino flux and show the predicted event spectrum for two exemplary cases. Although DM decays, with a relatively hard spectrum, cannot account for all the IceCube high-energy data, we illustrate how this extra source of high-energy neutrinos could reasonably explain some potential features in the observed spectrum. In this way, this represents a unified scenario for leptogenesis and DM that could be tested during the next years with more high-energy neutrino events.

Finite flavour groups of fermions

We present an overview of the theory of finite groups, with regard to their application as flavour symmetries in particle physics. In a general part, we discuss useful theorems concerning group structure, conjugacy classes, representations and character tables. In a specialized part, we attempt to give a fairly comprehensive review of finite subgroups of SO(3) and SU(3), in which we apply and illustrate the general theory. Moreover, we also provide a concise description of the symmetric and alternating groups and comment on the relationship between finite subgroups of U(3) and finite subgroups of SU(3). Though in this review we give a detailed description of a wide range of finite groups, the main focus is on the methods which allow the exploration of their different aspects.

Supersymmetric Majoron Inflation

We propose supersymmetric Majoron inflation in which the Majoron field $Φ$ responsible for generating right-handed neutrino masses may also be suitable for giving low scale "hilltop" inflation, with a discrete lepton number $Z_N$ spontaneously broken at the end of inflation, while avoiding the domain wall problem. In the framework of non-minimal supergravity, we show that a successful spectral index can result with small running together with small tensor modes. We show that a range of heaviest right-handed neutrino masses can be generated, $m_N\sim 10^1-10^{16}$ GeV, consistent with the constraints from reheating and domain walls.

Direct and Semi-Direct Approaches to Lepton Mixing with a Massless Neutrino

We discuss the possibility of enforcing a massless Majorana neutrino in the direct and semi-direct approaches to lepton mixing, in which the PMNS matrix is partly predicted by subgroups of a discrete family symmetry, extending previous group searches up to order 1535. We find a phenomenologically viable scheme for the semi-direct approach based on $Q(648)$ which contains $Δ(27)$ and the quaternion group as subgroups. This leads to novel predictions for the first column of the PMNS matrix corresponding to a normal neutrino mass hierarchy with $m_1=0$, and sum rules for the mixing angles and phase which are characterised by the solar angle being on the low side $θ_{12}\sim 31^{\circ}$ and the Dirac (oscillation) CP phase $δ$ being either about $\pm 45^\circ$ or $\pm π$.

Direct Neutrino Mass Experiments and Exotic Charged Current Interactions

We study the effect of exotic charged current interactions on the electron energy spectrum in tritium decay, focussing on the KATRIN experiment and a possible modified setup that has access to the full spectrum. Both sub-eV and keV neutrino masses are considered. We perform a fully relativistic calculation and take all possible new interactions into account, demonstrating the possible sizable distortions in the energy spectrum.

A complete survey of texture zeros in general and symmetric quark mass matrices

We perform a systematic analysis of all possible texture zeros in general and symmetric quark mass matrices. Using the values of masses and mixing parameters at the electroweak scale, we identify for both cases the maximally restrictive viable textures. Furthermore, we investigate the predictive power of these textures by applying a numerical predictivity measure recently defined by us. With this measure we find no predictive textures among the viable general quark mass matrices, while in the case of symmetric quark mass matrices most of the 15 maximally restrictive textures are predictive with respect to one or more light quark masses.

A complete survey of texture zeros in the lepton mass matrices

We perform a systematic and complete analysis of texture zeros in the lepton mass matrices and identify all viable and maximally restrictive cases of pairs (M_\ell, M_D) and (M_\ell, M_L), where M_\ell, M_D and M_L are the charged-lepton, Dirac neutrino and Majorana neutrino mass matrices, respectively. To this end, we perform a thorough analysis of textures which are equivalent through weak-basis permutations. Furthermore, we introduce numerical measures for the predictivity of textures and apply them to the viable and maximally restrictive texture zero models. It turns out that for Dirac neutrinos these models can at most predict the smallest neutrino mass and the CKM-type phase of the mixing matrix. For Majorana neutrinos most models can, in addition, predict the effective neutrino mass for neutrinoless double beta decay. Apart from one model, which has marginal predictive power with respect to sin^2(theta_23), no other model can predict any of the already measured observables.

On the characterization of the SU(3)-subgroups of type C and D

We investigate the two classes of finite subgroups of SU(3) that are called type C and D in the book of Miller, Blichfeldt and Dickson. We present two theorems which fully determine the form of the generators in a suitable basis. After exploring further properties of these groups, we are able to construct a complete list of infinite series in which these groups are arranged. For type C there are infinitely many series whereas for type D there are only two. Explicit examples of these series are presented which illustrate the general results.

Residual Z2 x Z2 symmetries and lepton mixing

We consider two novel scenarios of residual symmetries of the lepton mass matrices. Firstly we assume a Z2 x Z2 symmetry G_ell for the charged-lepton mass matrix and a Z2 symmetry G_nu for the light neutrino mass matrix. With this setting, the moduli of the elements of one column of the lepton mixing matrix are fixed up to a reordering. One may interchange the roles of G_ell and G_nu in this scenario, thereby constraining a row, instead of a column, of the mixing matrix. Secondly we assume a residual symmetry group G_ell \cong Zm (m>2) which is generated by a matrix with a doubly-degenerate eigenvalue. Then, with G_nu \cong Z2 x Z2 the moduli of the elements of a row of the lepton mixing matrix get fixed. Using the library of small groups we have performed a search for groups which may embed G_ell and G_nu in each of these two scenarios. We have found only two phenomenologically viable possibilities, one of them constraining a column and the other one a row of the mixing matrix.

Correlations and textures in the neutrino mass matrix

The recent enormous improvement of our knowledge of the neutrino oscillation parameters has motivated us to reinvestigate the allowed ranges of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix in the basis where the charged-lepton mass mass matrix is diagonal. Moreover, we have studied the correlations of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix. The result of this analysis is useful for finding textures in the neutrino mass matrix and, therefore, for model building in the lepton sector. As an example, we present two textures of the neutrino mass matrix which have only two parameters and fit very well all current experimental data on the neutrino parameters.

Correlations of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix

Assuming Majorana nature of neutrinos, we re-investigate, in the light of the recent measurement of the reactor mixing angle, the allowed ranges for the absolute values of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix in the basis where the charged-lepton mass matrix is diagonal. Apart from the derivation of upper and lower bounds on the values of the matrix elements, we also study their correlations. Moreover, we analyse the sensitivity of bounds and correlations to the global fit results of the neutrino oscillation parameters which are available in the literature.

Comments on the classification of the finite subgroups of SU(3)

Many finite subgroups of SU(3) are commonly used in particle physics. The classification of the finite subgroups of SU(3) began with the work of H.F. Blichfeldt at the beginning of the 20th century. In Blichfeldt's work the two series (C) and (D) of finite subgroups of SU(3) are defined. While the group series Delta(3n^2) and Delta(6n^2) (which are subseries of (C) and (D), respectively) have been intensively studied, there is not much knowledge about the group series (C) and (D). In this work we will show that (C) and (D) have the structures (C) \cong (Z_m x Z_m') \rtimes Z_3 and (D) \cong (Z_n x Z_n') \rtimes S_3, respectively. Furthermore we will show that, while the (C)-groups can be interpreted as irreducible representations of Delta(3n^2), the (D)-groups can in general not be interpreted as irreducible representations of Delta(6n^2).

On the finite subgroups of U(3) of order smaller than 512

We use the SmallGroups Library to find the finite subgroups of U(3) of order smaller than 512 which possess a faithful three-dimensional irreducible representation. From the resulting list of groups we extract those groups that can not be written as direct products with cyclic groups. These groups are the basic building blocks for models based on finite subgroups of U(3). All resulting finite subgroups of SU(3) can be identified using the well known list of finite subgroups of SU(3) derived by Miller, Blichfeldt and Dickson at the beginning of the 20th century. Furthermore we prove a theorem which allows to construct infinite series of finite subgroups of U(3) from a special type of finite subgroups of U(3). This theorem is used to construct some new series of finite subgroups of U(3). The first members of these series can be found in the derived list of finite subgroups of U(3) of order smaller than 512. In the last part of this work we analyse some interesting finite subgroups of U(3), especially the group S_4(2)\cong A_4\rtimes Z_4, which is closely related to the important SU(3)-subgroup S_4.

Systematic analysis of finite family symmetry groups and their application to the lepton sector

In this work we will investigate Lagrangians of the standard model extended by three right-handed neutrinos, and the consequences of invariance under finite groups G for lepton masses and mixing matrices are studied. The main part of this work is the systematic analysis of finite subgroups of SU(3). The analysis of these groups may act as a toolkit for future model building.
