Stark-Broadened Profiles for Ionized Helium Lines Using Computer Simulations

We present new and improved calculations of Stark-broadened profiles for ionized helium, a key ingredient in the spectroscopic analysis of helium-atmosphere DO white dwarfs. Our approach builds upon the computer simulation framework previously developed for neutral helium, which fully accounts for the dynamical interactions of both ions and electrons with the emitting helium atom. We extend this theoretical formalism by relaxing the assumption of straight-line trajectories for the perturbing particles (electrons and ionized helium) and adopting the hyperbolic trajectories appropriate for their interaction with a charged emitter, thereby accounting for their dynamical influence on the line-broadening process. In this exploratory study, we focus on the He II 4686 line, the strongest absorption feature observed in the spectra of DO white dwarfs. We present the resulting Stark profiles and perform a detailed comparison with those available in the literature.

A Theoretical Investigation of He I Line Profiles for the Spectroscopic Analysis of DB White Dwarfs

We present a comprehensive investigation of He I line profile calculations used in the spectroscopic analyses of DB white dwarfs. Our study includes an in-depth photometric and spectroscopic analysis of all DB white dwarfs in the Data Release 17 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, examining the effects of frequency sampling, Doppler broadening, line dissolution, broadening by neutral particles, and 3D hydrodynamical corrections on our results. More importantly, we compare the outcomes obtained from the semi-analytical He I Stark profiles commonly used in DB white dwarf spectroscopic analyses with our recent calculations of Stark-broadened profiles derived from computer simulations.

Improved Stark Broadened Profiles for Neutral Helium Lines Using Computer Simulations

The study of Stark broadening of neutral helium lines, despite significant advances over recent decades, has not led to updated large grids of helium line profiles relevant to the spectroscopic study of helium-rich stars. While the semi-analytical approach based on the standard Stark broadening theory is efficient for generating such grids, it presents challenges in incorporating additional physical effects into the model. Motivated by recent studies that highlight potential issues with line profiles in the context of white dwarf stars, this paper leverages advances in computer simulations to create a new grid of line profiles for 13 neutral helium lines in the optical range. These profiles cover densities ranging from 10^14 to 6 x 10^17 cm^-3 and temperatures from 10,000 K to 40,000 K, with the exception of the narrower He I 4713 line, for which the profile grid begins at 10^15.5 cm^-3. The primary goal of this research is to present the new grid and compare it with both the semi-analytical approach and other simulation results. By doing so, corrections to the previous grid will be explored, providing a foundation for future studies that utilize this updated grid. We also examine the impact of these new profiles on the determination of physical parameters for a range of astrophysical objects, including DB white dwarfs and other helium-rich stars.

New Calculations of Stark Broadened Profiles for Neutral Helium Lines Using Computer Simulations

We present new calculations of Stark broadened profiles for neutral helium lines using computer simulations that include some important aspects aimed at better representing the dynamical environment of the helium atom. These include the unification of ion and electron treatment, the correction for ion dynamics, the transition of the electron contribution to broadening from the core to the wings of the profile, the numerical integration of the time evolution operator of helium perturbed by a fluctuating electric field, the Debye correction for the correlation of the motion of charged perturbers, local density variations, and particle reinjection. We compare the results of our simulations for the He I $\lambda\lambda$4471 and 4922 lines with other results published in the literature. We also test our simulation environment for narrow lines (He I $\lambda\lambda$5877 and 6678) and broader lines (He I $\lambda\lambda$4026 and 4144). We find that the narrow lines are more difficult to produce adequately than the the broader ones.

Polarization Light Curve Modeling of Corotating Interaction Regions in the Wind of the Wolf-Rayet Star WR 6

The intriguing WN4b star WR6 has been known to display epoch-dependent spectroscopic, photometric and polarimetric variability for several decades. In this paper, we set out to verify if a simplified analytical model in which Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) threading an otherwise spherical wind is able to reproduce the many broadband continuum light curves from the literature with a reasonable set of parameters. We modified the optically thin model we developed in Ignace, St-Louis & Proulx-Giraldeau (2015) to approximately account for multiple scattering and used it to fit 13 separate datasets of this star. By including two CIRs in the wind, we obtained reasonable fits for all datasets with coherent values for the inclination of the rotation axis ($i_0=166^{\circ}$) and for its orientation in the plane of the sky, although in the latter case we obtained two equally acceptable values ($\psi=63^{\circ}$ and $\psi=152^{\circ}$) from the polarimetry. Additional line profile variation simulations using the Sobolev approximation for the line transfer allowed us to eliminate the $\psi=152^{\circ}$ solution. With the adopted configuration ($i_0=166^{\circ}$ and $\psi=63^{\circ}$), we were able to reproduce all datasets relatively well with two CIRs located near the stellar equator and always separated by $\sim 90^{\circ}$ in longitude. The epoch-dependency comes from the fact that these CIRs migrate along the surface of the star. Density contrasts smaller than a factor of two and large opening angles for the CIR ($\beta \geq 35^{\circ}$) were found to best reproduce the type of spectroscopic variability reported in the literature.
