Federated Reinforcement Learning for Efficient Mobile Crowdsensing under Incomplete Information

Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is a distributed sensing architecture that utilizes existing sensors on mobile units (MUs) to perform sensing tasks. A mobile crowdsensing platform (MCSP) publishes the sensing tasks and the MUs decide whether to participate in exchange for money. The MCS system is dynamic: the task requirements, the MUs' availability, and their available resources change over time. The MUs aim to find an efficient task participation strategy to maximize their income while the MCSP focuses on maximizing the number of completed tasks. As optimal strategies require perfect non-causal information about the MCS system, which is unavailable in realistic scenarios, the main challenge is to find an efficient task participation strategy for the MUs under incomplete information. To this end, a novel fully decentralized federated deep reinforcement learning algorithm, FDRL-PPO, is proposed. FDRL-PPO enables every MU to learn its own task participation strategy based on its experiences, available resources, and preferences, without relying on perfect non-causal information about the MCS system. To replenish their batteries, the MUs rely on energy harvesting. As a result, their available energy varies over time, leading to varying availability and fragmented learning experiences. To mitigate these challenges, the proposed approach leverages federated learning, enabling MUs to collaboratively improve their models without sharing private raw data like their own experiences. By exchanging only learned models, MUs collectively compensate for individual limitations, and find more scalable, robust, and efficient task participation strategies. Comprehensive evaluations on both synthetic and real-world datasets show that FDRL-PPO consistently outperforms benchmark algorithms in terms of task completion ratio, fairness in task completion, energy consumption, and number of conflicting proposals.

A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective on Self-Managing Networks

Modern telecommunication networks face an increasing complexity due to the rapidly growing number of networked devices and rising amounts of data. The literature advocates for self-managing networks as a means to tackle the resulting challenges. While self-managing networks provide potential solutions to these challenges, current research solely focuses on the perspective of network operators. However, modern telecommunication networks involve various stakeholders, such as service providers and end users, and necessitate interactions between them. By transitioning from a single-stakeholder to a multi-stakeholder perspective, we address the preferences of all involved parties, acknowledging potential conflicts of interest and constraints like information asymmetries. This broader perspective facilitates the development of more effective self-managing networks, significantly enhancing their performance metrics compared to approaches that solely prioritize the concerns of network operators.

Privacy Dashboards for Citizens and corresponding GDPR Services for Small Data Holders: A Literature Review

Citizens have gained many rights with the GDPR, e.g. the right to get a copy of their personal data. In practice, however, this is fraught with problems for citizens and small data holders. We present a literature review on solutions promising relief in the form of privacy dashboards for citizens and GDPR services for small data holders. Covered topics are analyzed, categorized and compared. This is ought to be a step towards both enabling citizens to exercise their GDPR rights and supporting small data holders to comply with their GDPR duties.

From Pareto to Weibull -- a constructive review of distributions on $\mathbb{R}^+$

Power laws and power laws with exponential cut-off are two distinct families of distributions on the positive real half-line. In the present paper, we propose a unified treatment of both families by building a family of distributions that interpolates between them, which we call Interpolating Family (IF) of distributions. Our original construction, which relies on techniques from statistical physics, provides a connection for hitherto unrelated distributions like the Pareto and Weibull distributions, and sheds new light on them. The IF also contains several distributions that are neither of power law nor of power law with exponential cut-off type. We calculate quantile-based properties, moments and modes for the IF. This allows us to review known properties of famous distributions on $\mathbb{R}^+$ and to provide in a single sweep these characteristics for various less known (and new) special cases of our Interpolating Family.

Linac activation of radioisotopes and underground gammaspectrometric analyses

After irradiating various medical linac parts with photon beams, we performed underground gamma-ray spectroscopy (GRS) measurements of the samples only a few minutes after the irradiations, in order to observe activated short-lived radioisotopes. Three samples were used: an Elekta Synergy flattening filter never irradiated before, an old flattening filter, unmounted from a linac in 2012 and a tungsten leaf, unmounted from the multileaf collimator (MLC) of the same linac in 2012. All three samples were measured before the irradiations in the underground laboratory of la Vue-des-Alpes. The new flattening filter and the leaf were then irradiated with ~200 Gy, first under 15MV and then with 6MV photon beams. The gamma counting began 20 minutes after the irradiations. Irradiations with 15MV led to (n,{\gamma}) activation of short-lived isotopes : In the leaf, the measured activity was 1556 Bq just after the irradiation and we observed various gamma lines from 187W, 57Ni and 56Mn. In the new filter, the activity was 1097 Bq and the gamma signature of 56Mn, 56Ni, 57Ni and 59Co was clearly present. The germanium detector allowed to measure gamma lines with relative intensities (branching ratio BR) down to ~0.1%, thank to its very low background. Irradiations of the new flattening filter at 6MV led to a small activation of 56Mn. Gammaspectroscopic data was taken several times after the irradiation to monitor the time evolution and the total activity. Treating patients with 15MV photon beams activate long-lived radioisotopes in the linac head. With this work, it was possible to identify these isotopes, and especially highlight the created short-lived radioisotopes.

Cohomologies on hypercomplex manifolds

We review some cohomological aspects of complex and hypercomplex manifolds and underline the differences between both realms. Furthermore, we try to highlight the similarities between compact complex surfaces on one hand and compact hypercomplex manifolds of real dimension 8 with holonomy of the Obata connection in SL(2,H) on the other hand.

Moments and Entropy of the Interpolating Family of Size Distributions

Sinner et al. (2016) recently introduced a five-parameter family of size distributions, coined Interpolating Family or IF distribution for short. In this complementary note, we take advantage of the tractability of the IF distribution to compute the moments and the differential entropy. As a consequence, we deduce at a single stroke the corresponding expressions for many well-known size distributions arising as special cases of the IF distribution.

An Interpolating Family of Size Distributions

We introduce a new five-parameter family of size distributions on the semi-finite interval $[x_0, \infty), x_0 \geqslant 0$, with two attractive features. First, it interpolates between power laws, such as the Pareto distribution, and power laws with exponential cut-off, such as the Weibull distribution. The proposed family is thus very flexible and spans over a broad range of well-known size distributions which are special cases of our family. Second, it has important tractability advantages over the popular five-parameter Generalized Beta distribution. We derive the hazard function, survival function, modes and quantiles, propose a random number generation procedure and discuss maximum likelihood estimation issues. Finally, we illustrate the wide applicability and fitting capacities of our new model on basis of three real data sets from very diverse domains, namely actuarial science, environmental science and survival analysis.

Quaternionic Bott-Chern cohomology and existence of HKT metrics

We study quaternionic Bott-Chern cohomology on compact hypercomplex manifolds and adapt some results from complex geometry to the quaternionic setting. For instance, we prove a criterion for the existence of HKT metrics on compact hypercomplex manifolds of real dimension 8 analogous to the one given by Teleman [35] and Angella-Dloussky-Tomassini [3] for compact complex surfaces.

A gamma-ray spectroscopy survey of Omani meteorites

The gamma-ray activities of 33 meteorite samples (30 ordinary chondrites, 1 Mars meteorite, 1 iron, 1 howardite) collected during Omani-Swiss meteorite search campaigns 2001-2008 were nondestructively measured using an ultra-low background gamma-ray detector. The results provide several types of information: Potassium and thorium concentrations were found to range within typical values for the meteorite types. Similar mean 26Al activities in groups of ordinary chondrites with a) weathering degrees W0-1 and low 14C terrestrial age and b) weathering degree W3-4 and high 14C terrestrial age are mostly consistent with activities observed in recent falls. The older group shows no significant depletion in 26Al. Among the least weathered samples one meteorite (SaU 424) was found to contain detectable 22Na identifying it as recent fall close to the year 2000. Based on an estimate of the surface area searched, the corresponding fall rate is ~120 events/106 km2*a, consistent with other estimations. Twelve samples from the large JaH 091 strewn field (total mass ~4.5 t) show significant variations of 26Al activities, including the highest values measured, consistent with a meteoroid radius of ~115 cm. Activities of 238U daughter elements demonstrate terrestrial contamination with 226Ra and possible loss of 222Rn. Recent contamination with small amounts of 137Cs is ubiquitous. We conclude that gamma-ray spectroscopy of a selection of meteorites with low degrees of weathering is particularly useful to detect recent falls among meteorites collected in hot deserts.

Seiberg-Witten invariants on manifolds with Riemannian foliations of codimension 4

We define Seiberg-Witten equations on closed manifolds endowed with a Riemannian foliation of codimension 4. When the foliation is taut, we show compactness of the moduli space under some hypothesis satisfied for instance by closed K-contact manifolds. Furthermore, we prove some vanishing and non-vanishing results and we highlight that the invariants may be used to distinguish different foliations on diffeomorphic manifolds.

SILEM : a new gaseous detector with integrated x-y readout plane

This works reports on gaseous detectors developments made in the frame of the EXO double-beta decay experiment. LEM (Large Electron Multiplication) are electron amplification grids based on GEM. They were developed in Neuchatel and showed remarquable resistance to sparks. The new SILEM grid combines the properties of the standard LEM with a micropatterned x-y readout plane on one of the grid side. It allows thus the amplification of the primary electrons and their position determination in the x-y plane.
