Revealing and reducing growth-induced interfacial disorder in preferentially aligned nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) diamond can form preferentially oriented ensembles with high sensing performance and low densities of lattice defects. Thin films of this material are a cornerstone of various imaging modalities. However, nitrogen injection needed to produce such films can transiently drive growth out of equilibrium, generating interfacial strain and spin defects that degrade NV coherence. Here, we investigate this disorder in $^{12}\text{C}$-enriched, preferentially oriented NV layers grown on (111) diamond using two nitrogen-injection procedures, combined with nanometer-scale selective plasma etching and NV spin-coherence measurements. Pulsed nitrogen injection produces a pronounced nitrogen overshoot within a 60--80 nm interfacial region, generating excessive amounts of defects. By contrast, smooth nitrogen delivery through mass flow controllers substantially suppresses interfacial disorder, yielding coherence properties close to the theoretical limit imposed by spin-bath noise. A 50-nm NV layer is used to demonstrate proton nuclear magnetic resonance detection. This work reveals the role of interfacial disorder associated with the nitrogen-doping procedure and provides a route to growing high-quality, thin NV-doped layers for quantum-sensing applications.

Observation of narrow-band $γ$ radiation from a boron-doped diamond superlattice with an 855 MeV electron beam

We report the first observation of narrow band 1.3 MeV $γ$ radiation from a crystalline diamond micro-undulator. A diamond superlattice was grown with a periodical varying boron doping profile. Four sinusoidally deformed (110) periods resulted with a period length of 5.0 $μ$m and an amplitude of 0.098 nm. A channeling experiment was performed with the 855 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI accelerator facility. A clear peak was detected with a large sodium iodide scintillation detector close to the expected photon energy of 1.28 MeV. Key characteristics of the peak, including photon energy, width and intensity, were reproduced fairly well by Monte-Carlo simulation calculations. Based on the latter, optimized boron doping profiles were designed for a hypothetical 3 GeV electron beam, enabling preparation of a highly directional $γ$-ray beam with a photon energy of 14.5 MeV. The predicted spectral bandwidth is 13\%, however, with a high energy continuum tail. The on-target photon flux at a beam current of 100 $μ$A would be about $10^{12}$/s.

Delta-Doped Diamond via in-situ Plasma-Distance Control

We present an approach for the CVD growth of diamond, where the sample is placed in a defined distance from the reactor baseplate, to which the plasma couples. We observe two previously unknown growth regimes. In the first case, the sample is positioned within three to five millimeters of the plasma, leading to a decreased growth rate, compared to a position inside the plasma and, additionally, to an increased nitrogen incorporation, allowing the fabrication of delta-doped layers with a thickness below 30 nm. In another regime, where the sample is more than 10 mm away from the plasma, no growth is observed. Instead, we assume a deposition of nitrogen-rich species on the diamond surface, which is incorporated during the growth of the following layer. All fabricated layers show NV emission, where the intensity correlates with the nitrogen incorporation. The growth techniques could allow the fabrication of highly doped thin films for quantum sensing applications, as well as layers with low NV concentration, for quantum computing. The new approaches are applicable not only for nitrogen incorporation but also for other defects, for example, phosphorus, which could open up new avenues for diamond-based electronics.

Improved Leakage Currents and Polarity Control through Oxygen Incorporation in Ferroelectric Al0.73Sc0.27N Thin Films

This article examines systematic oxygen (O)-incorporation to reduce total leakage currents in sputtered wurtzite-type ferroelectric Al0.73Sc0.27N thin films, along with its impact on the material structure and the polarity of the as-grown films. The O in the bulk Al0.73Sc0.27N was introduced through an external gas source during the reactive sputter process. In comparison to samples without doping, O-doped films showed almost a fourfold reduction of the leakage current near the coercive field. In addition, doping resulted in the reduction of the steady-state leakage currents by roughly one order of magnitude sub-coercive fields. Microstructure analysis using X-ray diffraction 1and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed no significant structural degradation of the bulk Al0.73Sc0.27N. In case of the maximum O-doped film, the c-axis out-of-plane texture increased by only 20% from 1.8° and chemical mapping revealed a uniform distribution of oxygen incorporation into the bulk. Our results further demonstrate the ability to control the as-deposited polarity of Al0.73Sc0.27N via the O-concentration, changing from nitrogen- to metal-polar orientation. Thus, this article presents a promising approach to mitigate the leakage current in wurtzite-type Al0.73Sc0.27N without incurring any significant structural degradation of the bulk thin film quality, thereby making ferroelectric nitrides more suitable for microelectronic applications.

Structural and electrical properties of fiber textured and epitaxial molybdenum thin films prepared by magnetron sputter epitaxy

Molybdenum (Mo) due to its optimal structural, physical, and acoustic properties find application as electrode material in aluminum scandium nitride (AlScN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) based bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators. Epitaxial Mo thin films exhibiting low resistivity can improve the performance of the BAW resonator by enhancing both the electromechanical coupling coefficient and quality factor. In this study, we systematically vary the growth temperature of Mo grown on fiber-textured and epitaxial wurtzite-aluminum nitride (AlN) to study the changes in structural and electrical properties of the Mo films. Results show that Mo grown at 700°C on epitaxial AlN exhibit low surface roughness, large average grain diameter, low resistivity, and high crystal quality. XRD pole figure and phi-scan reveal that irrespective of the growth temperature, Mo is fiber textured on fiber-textured AlN, and has three rotational domains on epitaxial AlN. The study shows that the resistivity of Mo reduces with increasing growth temperature, which we relate to increasing average grain diameter. Additionally, we show that fiber-textured Mo has more high angle grain boundaries resulting in consistently higher resistivity than its epitaxial equivalent.

Conformational and state-specific effects in reactions of 2,3-dibromobutadiene with Coulomb-crystallized calcium ions

Recent advances in experimental methodology enabled studies of the quantum-state and conformational dependence of chemical reactions under precisely controlled conditions in the gas phase. Here, we generated samples of selected gauche and s-trans 2,3-dibromobutadiene (DBB) by electrostatic deflection in a molecular beam and studied their reaction with Coulomb crystals of laser-cooled $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$ ions in an ion trap. The rate coefficients for the total reaction were found to strongly depend on both the conformation of DBB and the electronic state of $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$. In the $\mathrm{(4p)~^{2}P_{1/2}}$ and $\mathrm{(3d)~^{2}D_{3/2}}$ excited states of $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$, the reaction is capture-limited and faster for the gauche conformer due to long-range ion-dipole interactions. In the $\mathrm{(4s)~^{2}S_{1/2}}$ ground state of $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$, the reaction rate for s-trans DBB still conforms with the capture limit, while that for gauche DBB is strongly suppressed. The experimental observations were analysed with the help of adiabatic capture theory, ab-initio calculations and reactive molecular dynamics simulations on a machine-learned full-dimensional potential energy surface of the system. The theory yields near-quantitative agreement for s-trans-DBB, but overestimates the reactivity of the gauche-conformer compared to the experiment. The present study points to the important role of molecular geometry even in strongly reactive exothermic systems and illustrates striking differences in the reactivity of individual conformers in gas-phase ion-molecule reactions.

Development and characterization of high-frequency sources for supersonic beams of fluorine radicals

We present and compare two high-pressure, high-frequency electric-discharge sources for the generation of supersonic beams of fluorine radicals. The sources are based on dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) and plate-discharge units attached to a pulsed solenoid valve. The corrosion-resistant discharge sources were operated with fluorine gas seeded in helium up to backing pressures as high as 30 bar. We employed a (3+1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization combined with velocity-map imaging for the optimization, characterization and comparison of the fluorine beams. Additionally, universal femtosecond-laser-ionization detection was used for the characterization of the discharge sources at experimental repetition rates up to 200 Hz. Our results show that the plate discharge is more efficient in F$_{2}$ dissociation than the DBD by a factor of 8-9, whereas the DBD produces internally colder fluorine radicals.
