An iterative algorithm for the square-root Lasso

In the framework of sparsity-enforcing regularisation for linear inverse problems, we consider the minimisation of a square-root Lasso cost function. To solve this problem we devise a simple modification (called SQRT-ISTA) of the Iterative Soft-Thresholding Algorithm (ISTA) for the Lasso problem and we prove convergence for this algorithm. Under some additional assumptions, we derive an upper bound on the convergence rate of the cost function. We also generalise these results to the case of the group square-root Lasso, where sparsity is enforced for groups of variables instead of individual ones.

Total Skin Electron Therapy Stanford Technique Evolution With Monte Carlo Simulation Toward Personalized Treatments For Cutaneous Lymphoma

Current Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET) Stanford technique for cutaneous lymphoma, established in the 70's, involves a unique irradiation setup, i.e. patient's position and beam arrangement, for all patients with ensuing great variability in dose distribution and difficult dose optimization. A Geant4-based simulation has been developed to explore the possibility of personalizing the dose to each patient's anatomy. To achieve this optimization of the treatment method, this project enrolls different aspects of the clinical and computational techniques: starting with the knowledge of the experimental parameters involving TSET practice, passing through an innovative approach to model the patient's anatomy, a precise description of the electron beam and a validated configuration of the physics models handling the interactions of the electrons and of secondary particles. The Geant4-based simulation models the patient as a tessellated solid derived from the optical scan of her/his body, realistically reproduces the irradiation environment in detail and calculates the energy deposition corresponding to each facet of the patient's scanned surface. The resulting three-dimensional dose distribution constitutes the basis for the personalization of the medical treatement as appropriate to each patient's specific characteristics.

Commissioning and improvements of the instrumentation and launch of the scientific exploitation of OARPAF, the Regional Astronomical Observatory of the Antola Park

The \oarpaf telescope is an $80\rm cm$-diameter optical telescope installed in the Antola Mount Regional Reserve, in Northern Italy. This work presents the results of the characterization of the site, as well as developments and interventions that have been implemented, with the goal of exploiting the facility for scientific and educational purposes. During the characterization of the site, an average background brightness of $22.40 \, m_{AB}$ ($B$ filter) -- $21.14 \, m_{AB}$ ($I$) per arcsecond squared, and a $1.5$--$3.0"$ seeing, have been measured. An estimate of the magnitude zero points for photometry is also reported. The material under commissioning includes 3 CCD detectors for which we provide the linearity range, gain, and dark current; a 31 orders échelle Northern Italy. This work presents the results of the characterization of the site, as well as developments andspectrograph with $R\sim 8500$--$15000$, and a dispersion of $n = 1.39\times 10^{-6}\rm px^{-1}λ+ 1.45\times 10^{-4}\rm nm/px$, where $λ$ is expressed in $\rm nm$. The scientific and outreach potential of the facility is proven in different science cases, such as exoplanetary transits and active galactic nuclei variability. The determination of time delays of gravitationally lensed quasars, the microlensing phenomenon and the tracking and the study of asteroids are also discussed as prospective science cases.

A method for space-variant deblurring with application to adaptive optics imaging in astronomy

Images from adaptive optics systems are generally affected by significant distortions of the point spread function (PSF) across the field of view, depending on the position of natural and artificial guide stars. Image reduction techniques circumventing or mitigating these effects are important tools to take full advantage of the scientific information encoded in AO images. The aim of this paper is to propose a method for the deblurring of the astronomical image, given a set of samples of the space-variant PSF. The method is based on a partitioning of the image domain into regions of isoplanatism and on applying suitable deconvolution methods with boundary effects correction to each region. The effectiveness of the boundary effects correction is proved. Moreover, the criterion for extending the disjoint sections to partially overlapping sections is validated. The method is applied to simulated images of a stellar system characterized by a spatially variable PSF. We obtain good photometric quality, and therefore good science quality, by performing aperture photometry on the deblurred images. The proposed method is implemented in IDL in the Software Package "Patch", which is available on http://www.airyproject.eu.

Image reconstruction for observations with a high dynamic range: LINC-NIRVANA simulations of a stellar jet

We report the results of a simulation and reconstruction of observations of a young stellar object (YSO) jet with the LINC-NIRVANA (LN) interferometric instrument, which will be mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). This simulation has been performed in order to investigate the ability of observing the weak diffuse jet line emission against the strong IR stellar continuum through narrow band images in the H and K atmospheric windows. In general, this simulation provides clues on the image quality that could be achieved in observations with a high dynamic range. In these cases, standard deconvolution methods, such as Richardson-Lucy, do not provide satisfactory results: we therefore propose here a new method of image reconstruction. It consists in considering the image to be reconstructed as the sum of two terms: one corresponding to the star (whose position is assumed to be known) and the other to the jet. A regularization term is introduced for this second component and the reconstruction is obtained with an iterative method alternating between the two components. An analysis of the results shows that the image quality obtainable with this method is significantly improved with respect to standard deconvolution methods, reducing the number of artifacts and allowing us to reconstruct the original jet intensity distribution with an error smaller than 10%.
