Suppression of Faraday waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an optical lattice

We study the formation of Faraday waves in an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate in presence of a one-dimensional optical lattice, where phonons are parametrically excited by modulating the radial confinement of the condensate. For very shallow optical lattices, phonons with a well-defined wave vector propagate along the condensate, as in the absence of the lattice, and we observe the formation of a Faraday pattern. By increasing the potential depth, the local sound velocity decreases and when it equals the condensate local phase velocity, the condensate becomes dynamically unstable and the parametric excitation of Faraday waves is suppressed.

Localization-Delocalization Transition in the Random Dimer Model

The random-dimer model is probably the most popular model for a one-dimensional disordered system where correlations are responsible for delocalization of the wave functions. This is the primary model used to justify the insulator-metal transition in conducting polymers and in DNA. However, for such systems, the localization-delocalization regimes have only been observed by deeply modifying the system itself, including the correlation function of the disordered potential. In this article, we propose to use an ultracold atomic mixture to cross the transition simply by externally tuning the interspecies interactions, and without modifying the impurity correlations.

Photonic spectrum of bichromatic optical lattices

We study the photonic spectrum of a one-dimensional optical lattice possessing a double primitive cell, when the atoms are well localized at the lattice minima. While a one-dimensional lattice with a simple Wigner-Seitz cell always possesses a photonic bandgap at the atomic resonance, in this configuration the photonic transmission spectrum may exhibit none, double or multiple photonic bandgaps depending on the ratio between the interparticle distance $\varrho$ inside the cell and the cell size $a$. The transmission spectra of a weak incident probe are evaluated when the atoms are trapped in free space and inside an optical resonator for realistic experimental parameters.

Fermionization of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a harmonic trap. It consists of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with repulsive hard-core interactions) and of a non-interacting Fermi gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas), both species interacting through hard-core repulsive interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we determine the exact particle density profiles, momentum distributions and behaviour of the mixture under 1D expansion when opening the trap. In real space, bosons and fermions do not display any phase separation: the respective density profiles extend over the same region and they both present a number of peaks equal to the total number of particles in the trap. In momentum space the bosonic component has the typical narrow TG profile, while the fermionic component shows a broad distribution with fermionic oscillations at small momenta. Due to the large boson-fermion repulsive interactions, both the bosonic and the fermionic momentum distributions decay as $C p^{-4}$ at large momenta, like in the case of a pure bosonic TG gas. The coefficient $C$ is related to the two-body density matrix and to the bosonic concentration in the mixture. When opening the trap, both momentum distributions "fermionize" under expansion and turn into that of a Fermi gas with a particle number equal to the total number of particles in the mixture.

Shell structure in the density profiles for noninteracting fermions in anisotropic harmonic confinement

We develop a Green's function method to evaluate the exact equilibrium particle-density profiles of noninteracting Fermi gases in external harmonic confinement in any spatial dimension and for arbitrary trap anisotropy. While in a spherically symmetric configuration the shell effects are negligible in the case of large number of particles, we find that for very anisotropic traps the quantum effects due to single-level occupancy and the deviations from the Thomas-Fermi approximation are visible also for mesoscopic clouds.

One-dimensional non-interacting fermions in harmonic confinement: equilibrium and dynamical properties

We consider a system of one-dimensional non-interacting fermions in external harmonic confinement. Using an efficient Green's function method we evaluate the exact profiles and the pair correlation function, showing a direct signature of the Fermi statistics and of the single quantum-level occupancy. We also study the dynamical properties of the gas, obtaining the spectrum both in the collisionless and in the collisional regime. Our results apply as well to describe a one-dimensional Bose gas with point-like hard-core interactions.

Light scattering from a degenerate quasi-onedimensional confined gas of non-interacting fermions

We evaluate the scattering functions of a gas of spin-polarized, non-interacting fermions confined in a quasi-onedimensional harmonic trap at zero temperature. The main focus is on the inelastic scattering spectrum and on the angular distribution of scattered light from a mesoscopic atomic cloud as probes of its discrete quantum levels and of its shell structure in this restricted geometry. The dynamic structure factor is calculated and compared with the results of a local-density approximation exploiting the spectrum of a one-dimensional homogeneous Fermi gas. The elastic and inelastic contributions to the static structure factor are separately evaluated: the inelastic term becomes dominant as the momentum transfer increases, masking a small peak at twice the Fermi momentum in the elastic term but still reflecting the discrete quantum levels of the cloud. A fast and accurate numerical method is developed to evaluate the full pair distribution function for mesoscopic inhomogeneous clouds.

Momentum flux density, kinetic energy density and their fluctuations for one-dimensional confined gases of non-interacting fermions

We present a Green's function method for the evaluation of the particle density profile and of the higher moments of the one-body density matrix in a mesoscopic system of N Fermi particles moving independently in a linear potential. The usefulness of the method is illustrated by applications to a Fermi gas confined in a harmonic potential well, for which we evaluate the momentum flux and kinetic energy densities as well as their quantal mean-square fluctuations. We also study some properties of the kinetic energy functional E_{kin}[n(x)] in the same system. Whereas a local approximation to the kinetic energy density yields a multi-valued function, an exact single-valued relationship between the density derivative of E_{kin}[n(x)] and the particle density n(x) is demonstrated and evaluated for various values of the number of particles in the system.

Exact particle and kinetic energy densities for one-dimensional confined gases of non-interacting fermions

We propose a new method for the evaluation of the particle density and kinetic pressure profiles in inhomogeneous one-dimensional systems of non-interacting fermions, and apply it to harmonically confined systems of up to N=1000 fermions. The method invokes a Green's function operator in coordinate space, which is handled by techniques originally developed for the calculation of the density of single-particle states from Green's functions in the energy domain. In contrast to the Thomas-Fermi (local density) approximation, the exact profiles under harmonic confinement show negative local pressure in the tails and a prominent shell structure which may become accessible to observation in magnetically trapped gases of fermionic alkali atoms.

Momentum distribution of an interacting Bose-condensed gas at finite temperature

We use a semiclassical two-fluid model to study the momentum distribution of a Bose-condensed gas with repulsive interactions inside a harmonic trap at finite temperature, with specific focus on atomic hydrogen. We give particular attention to the average kinetic energy, which is almost entirely associated with the thermal cloud. A non-linear dependence of the kinetic energy on temperature is displayed, affording a precise way to assess the temperature of the gas. We also show that the kinetic energy increases with the strength of the interactions, reflecting an enhanced rate of depletion of the condensate with increasing temperature.
