Towards a Geometrization of Quantum Complexity and Chaos

In this paper, we show how the restriction of the Quantum Geometric Tensor to manifolds of states that can be generated through local interactions provides a new tool to understand the consequences of locality in physics. After a review of a first result in this context, consisting in a geometric out-of-equilibrium extension of the quantum phase transitions, we argue the opportunity and the usefulness to exploit the Quantum Geometric Tensor to geometrize quantum chaos and complexity.

A Simple Model of Double Dynamics on Lie Groups

We study the dynamics of the rigid rotator on the group manifold of SU(2) as an instance of dynamics on Lie groups together with a dual model whose carrier space is the Borel group SB(2,C), the Lie Poisson dual of SU(2). We thus introduce a parent action on the Drinfeldd double of the above mentioned groups, which describes the dynamics of a system with twice as many degrees of freedom as the two starting partners. Through a gauging procedure of its global symmetries both the rigid rotor and the dual model are recovered.

Time Discretization From Noncommutativity

We show that a particular noncommutative geometry, sometimes called angular or $ρ$-Minkowski, requires that the spectrum of time be discrete. In this noncommutative space the time variable is not commuting with the angular variable in cylindrical coordinates. The possible values that the variable can take go from minus infinity to plus infinity, equally spaced by the scale of noncommmutativity. Possible self-adjoint extensions of the "time operator" are discussed. They give that a measurement of time can be any real value, but time intervals are still quantized.

Jacobi sigma models

We introduce a two-dimensional sigma model associated with a Jacobi manifold. The model is a generalisation of a Poisson sigma model providing a topological open string theory. In the Hamiltonian approach first class constraints are derived, which generate gauge invariance of the model under diffeomorphisms. The reduced phase space is finite-dimensional. By introducing a metric tensor on the target, a non-topological sigma model is obtained, yielding a Polyakov action with metric and B-field, whose target space is a Jacobi manifold.

Poisson-Lie T-Duality of WZW Model via Current Algebra Deformation

Poisson-Lie T-duality of the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model having the group manifold of $SU(2)$ as target space is investigated. The whole construction relies on the deformation of the affine current algebra of the model, the semi-direct sum $\mathfrak{su}(2)(\mathbb{R}) \, \dot{\oplus} \, \mathfrak{a}$, to the fully semisimple Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})(\mathbb{R})$. A two-parameter family of models with $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ as target phase space is obtained so that Poisson-Lie T-duality is realised as an $O(3,3)$ rotation in the phase space. The dual family shares the same phase space but its configuration space is $SB(2,\mathbb{C})$, the Poisson-Lie dual of the group $SU(2)$. A parent action with doubled degrees of freedom on $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ is defined, together with its Hamiltonian description.

A novel approach to non-commutative gauge theory

We propose a field theoretical model defined on non-commutative space-time with non-constant non-commutativity parameter $Θ(x)$, which satisfies two main requirements: it is gauge invariant and reproduces in the commutative limit, $Θ\to 0$, the standard $U(1)$ gauge theory. We work in the slowly varying field approximation where higher derivatives terms in the star commutator are neglected and the latter is approximated by the Poisson bracket, $-i[f,g]_\star\approx\{f,g\}$. We derive an explicit expression for both the NC deformation of Abelian gauge transformations which close the algebra $[δ_f,δ_g]A=δ_{\{f,g\}}A$, and the NC field strength ${\cal F}$, covariant under these transformations, $δ_f {\cal F}=\{{\cal F},f\}$. NC Chern-Simons equations are equivalent to the requirement that the NC field strength, ${\cal F}$, should vanish identically. Such equations are non-Lagrangian. The NC deformation of Yang-Mills theory is obtained from the gauge invariant action, $S=\int {\cal F}^2$. As guiding example, the case of $su(2)$-like non-commutativity, corresponding to rotationally invariant NC space, is worked out in detail.

Quantum geometric tensor away from Equilibrium

The manifold of ground states of a family of quantum Hamiltonians can be endowed with a quantum geometric tensor whose singularities signal quantum phase transitions and give a general way to define quantum phases. In this paper, we show that the same information-theoretic and geometrical approach can be used to describe the geometry of quantum states away from equilibrium. We construct the quantum geometric tensor $Q_{μν}$ for ensembles of states that evolve in time and study its phase diagram and equilibration properties. If the initial ensemble is the manifold of ground states, we show that the phase diagram is conserved, that the geometric tensor equilibrates after a quantum quench, and that its time behavior is governed by out-of-time-order commutators (OTOCs). We finally demonstrate our results in the exactly solvable Cluster-XY model.

Dichotomic probability representation of quantum states

We present systematic proofs of statements about probability representations of qudit density states in terms of standard probability distributions of dichotomic random variables. New relations and new entropic-information inequalities are derived. The examples of 3- and 4- level states are explicitly worked out.

T-Dualities and Doubled Geometry of the Principal Chiral Model

The Principal Chiral Model (PCM) defined on the group manifold of SU(2) is here investigated with the aim of getting a further deepening of its relation with Generalized and Doubled Geometry. A one-parameter family of equivalent Hamiltonian descriptions is introduced, and cast into the form of Born geometries. Then O(3,3) duality transformations of the target phase space are performed and we show that the resulting dual models are defined on the group SB(2,C) which is the Poisson-Lie dual of SU(2) in the Iwasawa decomposition of the Drinfel'd double SL(2, C). Moreover, starting from the Lagrangian approach, a new kind of duality is found between the SU(2) PCM and the natural one defined on SB(2,C) which is not an isometry of the target phase space. A parent action with doubled degrees of freedom and configuration space SL(2, C) is then defined that reduces to either one of the dually related models, once suitable constraints are implemented.

T-Duality and Doubling of the Isotropic Rigid Rotator

After reviewing some of the fundamental aspects of Drinfel'd doubles and Poisson-Lie T-duality, we describe the three-dimensional isotropic rigid rotator on $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ starting from a non-Abelian deformation of the natural carrier space of its Hamiltonian description on $T^*SU(2) \simeq SU(2) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^3$. A new model is then introduced on the dual group $SB(2,\mathbb{C})$, within the Drinfel'd double description of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})=SU(2) \bowtie SB(2,\mathbb{C})$. The two models are analyzed from the Poisson-Lie duality point of view, and a doubled generalized action is built with $TSL(2,\mathbb{C})$ as carrier space. The aim is to explore within a simple case the relations between Poisson-Lie symmetry, Doubled Geometry and Generalized Geometry. In fact, all the mentioned structures are discussed, such as a Poisson realization of the $C$-brackets for the generalized bundle $T \oplus T^*$ over $SU(2)$ from the Poisson algebra of the generalized model. The two dual models exhibit many features of Poisson-Lie duals and from the generalized action both of them can be respectively recovered by gauging one of its symmetries.

Nonlinear Dynamics from Linear Quantum Evolutions

Linear dynamics restricted to invariant submanifolds generally gives rise to nonlinear dynamics. Submanifolds in the quantum framework may emerge for several reasons: one could be interested in specific properties possessed by a given family of states, either as a consequence of experimental constraints or inside an approximation scheme. In this work we investigate such issues in connection with a one parameter group $ϕ_t$ of transformations on a Hilbert space, $\mathcal{H}$, defining the unitary evolutions of a chosen quantum system. Two procedures will be presented: the first one consists in the restriction of the vector field associated with the Schrödinger equation to a submanifold invariant under the flow $ϕ_t$. The second one makes use of the Lagrangian formalism and can be extended also to non-invariant submanifolds, even if in such a case the resulting dynamics is only an approximation of the flow $ϕ_t$. Such a result, therefore, should be conceived as a generalization of the variational method already employed for stationary problems.

Lagrangian formulation for electric charge in a magnetic monopole distribution

We give a Lagrangian description of an electric charge in a field sourced by a continuous magnetic monopole distribution. The description is made possible thanks to a doubling of the configuration space. The Legendre transform of the nonrelativistic Lagrangian agrees with the Hamiltonian description given recently by Kupriyanov and Szabo. The covariant relativistic version of the Lagrangian is shown to introduce a new gauge symmetry, in addition to standard reparametrizations. The generalization of the system to open strings coupled to a magnetic monopole distribution is also given, as well as the generalization to particles in a non-Abelian gauge field which does not satisfy Bianchi identities in some region of the space-time.

Noncommutative gravity with self-dual variables

We build a noncommutative extension of Palatini-Holst theory on a twist-deformed spacetime, generalizing a model that has been previously proposed by Aschieri and Castellani. The twist deformation entails an enlargement of the gauge group, and leads to the introduction of new gravitational degrees of freedom. In particular, the tetrad degrees of freedom must be doubled, thus leading to a bitetrad theory of gravity. The model is shown to exhibit new duality symmetries. The introduction of the Holst term leads to a dramatic simplification of the dynamics, which is achieved when the Barbero-Immirzi parameter takes the value $β=-i$, corresponding to a self-dual action. We study in detail the commutative limit of the model, focusing in particular on the role of torsion and non-metricity. The effects of spacetime noncommutativity are taken into account perturbatively, and are computed explicitly in a simple example. Connections with bimetric theories and the role of local conformal invariance in the commutative limit are also explored.

Doubling, T-Duality and Generalized Geometry: a Simple Model

A simple mechanical system, the three-dimensional isotropic rigid rotator, is here investigated as a 0+1 field theory, aiming at further investigating the relation between Generalized/Double Geometry on the one hand and Doubled World-Sheet Formalism/Double Field Theory, on the other hand. The model is defined over the group manifold of SU(2) and a dual model is introduced having the Poisson-Lie dual of SU(2) as configuration space. A generalized action with configuration space SL(2,C), i.e. the Drinfel'd double of the group SU(2), is then defined: it reduces to the original action of the rotator or to its dual, once constraints are implemented. The new action contains twice as many variables as the original. Moreover, its geometric structures can be understood in terms of Generalized Geometry. keywords: Generalized Geometry, Double Field Theory, T-Duality, Poisson-Lie symmetry.

A Pedagogical Intrinsic Approach to Relative Entropies as Potential Functions of Quantum Metrics: the $q$-$z$ Family

The so-called $q$-z-\textit{Rényi Relative Entropies} provide a huge two-parameter family of relative entropies which includes almost all well-known examples of quantum relative entropies for suitable values of the parameters. In this paper we consider a log-regularized version of this family and use it as a family of potential functions to generate covariant $(0,2)$ symmetric tensors on the space of invertible quantum states in finite dimensions. The geometric formalism developed here allows us to obtain the explicit expressions of such tensor fields in terms of a basis of globally defined differential forms on a suitable unfolding space without the need to introduce a specific set of coordinates. To make the reader acquainted with the intrinsic formalism introduced, we first perform the computation for the qubit case, and then, we extend the computation of the metric-like tensors to a generic $n$-level system. By suitably varying the parameters $q$ and $z$, we are able to recover well-known examples of quantum metric tensors that, in our treatment, appear written in terms of globally defined geometrical objects that do not depend on the coordinates system used. In particular, we obtain a coordinate-free expression for the von Neumann-Umegaki metric, for the Bures metric and for the Wigner-Yanase metric in the arbitrary $n$-level case.

Noncommutative field theory from angular twist

We consider a noncommutative field theory with space-time $\star$-commutators based on an angular noncommutativity, namely a solvable Lie algebra: the Euclidean in two dimension. The $\star$-product can be derived from a twist operator and it is shown to be invariant under twisted Poincaré transformations. In momentum space the noncommutativity manifests itself as a noncommutative $\star$-deformed sum for the momenta, which allows for an equivalent definition of the $\star$-product in terms of twisted convolution of plane waves. As an application, we analyze the $λϕ^4$ field theory at one-loop and discuss its UV/IR behaviour. We also analyze the kinematics of particle decay for two different situations: the first one corresponds to a splitting of space-time where only space is deformed, whereas the second one entails a non-trivial $\star$-multiplication for the time variable, while one of the three spatial coordinates stays commutative.

The Gribov problem in Noncommutative gauge theory

After reviewing Gribov ambiguity of non-Abelian gauge theories, a phenomenon related to the topology of the bundle of gauge connections, we show that there is a similar feature for noncommutative QED over Moyal space, despite the structure group being Abelian, and we exhibit an infinite number of solutions for the equation of Gribov copies. This is a genuine effect of noncommutative geometry which disappears when the noncommutative parameter vanishes.
