Sensitivity to perturbations in the three-dimensional Anderson model

We investigate the fidelity susceptibility, which quantifies the sensitivity of single-particle eigenstates to perturbations, in the three-dimensional Anderson model. As a function of disorder strength $W$, it exhibits two distinct peaks. The first peak signals a crossover at weak disorder strength from plane-wave states to single-particle quantum chaos, and its position shifts toward $W\to 0$ in the thermodynamic limit. The second peak emerges, to high numerical accuracy, at the critical disorder strength associated with the Anderson localization transition. We further show that the divergence of the first peak is maximal, scaling as the square of the inverse frequency cutoff, whereas the divergence of the second peak is submaximal. We relate the latter suppression to the fractal structure of single-particle eigenstates at criticality. We discuss two distinct scenarios that give rise to the peaks in the fidelity susceptibilities. Moreover, studying the scaling of typical fidelity susceptibilities above the Anderson transition, we find evidence of two distinct regimes of nonergodic behavior.

Tunable Hilbert space fragmentation and extended critical regime

Systems exhibiting the Hilbert-space fragmentation are nonergodic, and their Hamiltonians decompose into exponentially many blocks in the computational basis. In many cases, these blocks can be labeled by eigenvalues of statistically localized integrals of motion (SLIOM), which play a similar role in fragmented systems as local integrals of motion in integrable systems. While a nonzero perturbation eliminates all nontrivial conserved quantities from integrable models, we demonstrate for the $t$-$J_z$ chain that an appropriately chosen perturbation may gradually eliminate SLIOMs (one by one) by progressively merging the fragmented subspaces. This gradual recovery of ergodicity manifests as an extended critical regime characterized by multiple peaks of the fidelity susceptibility. Each peak signals a change in the number of SLIOMs and blocks, as well as an ultra-slow relaxation of local observables.

Localization transitions in quadratic systems without quantum chaos

Transitions from delocalized to localized eigenstates have been extensively studied in both quadratic and interacting models. The delocalized regime typically exhibits diffusion and quantum chaos, and its properties comply with the random matrix theory (RMT) predictions. However, it is also known that in certain quadratic models, the delocalization in position space is not accompanied by the single-particle quantum chaos. Here, we study the one-dimensional Anderson and Wannier-Stark models that exhibit eigenstate transitions from localization in quasimomentum space (supporting ballistic transport) to localization in position space (with no transport) in a nonstandard thermodynamic limit, which assumes rescaling the model parameters with the system size. We show that the transition point may exhibit an unconventional character of Janus type, i.e., some measures hint at the RMT-like universality emerging at the transition point, while others depart from it. For example, the eigenstate entanglement entropies may exhibit, depending on the bipartition, a volume-law behavior that either approaches the value of Haar-random Gaussian states, or converges to a lower, non-universal value. Our results hint at rich diversity of volume-law eigenstate entanglement entropies in quadratic systems that are not maximally entangled.

Normal weak eigenstate thermalization

Eigenstate thermalization has been numerically shown to occur for few-body observables in a wide range of nonintegrable models. For intensive sums of few-body observables, a weaker version of eigenstate thermalization known as weak eigenstate thermalization has been proved to occur in general. Here, we unveil a stricter weak eigenstate thermalization phenomenon that occurs in quadratic models exhibiting quantum chaos in the single-particle sector (quantum-chaotic quadratic models) and in integrable interacting models. In such models, we argue that few-body observables that have a properly defined system-size independent norm are guaranteed to exhibit at least a polynomially vanishing variance (over the entire many-body energy spectrum) of the diagonal matrix elements, a phenomenon we dub normal weak eigenstate thermalization. We prove that normal weak eigenstate thermalization is a consequence of single-particle eigenstate thermalization, i.e., it can be viewed as a manifestation of quantum chaos at the single-particle level. We report numerical evidence of normal weak eigenstate thermalization for quantum-chaotic quadratic models such as the three-dimensional Anderson model in the delocalized regime and the power-law random banded matrix model, as well as for the integrable interacting spin-1/2 XYZ and XXZ models.

Fading ergodicity meets maximal chaos

Fading ergodicity provides a theoretical framework for understanding deviations from the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) near ergodicity-breaking transitions. In this work, we demonstrate that the breakdown of the ETH at the interaction-driven ergodicity-breaking critical point in the quantum sun model gives rise to to the maximally divergent fidelity susceptibility. We further extend our analysis to the energy-driven ergodicity-breaking transition associated with the many-body mobility edge. Specifically, we show that fidelity susceptibilities at energies away from the middle of the spectrum exhibit a divergent peak near the mobility edge. Finally, we argue that fading ergodicity provides a simple and accurate description of the ETH breakdown in the quantum sun model, which is accompanied with the emergence of a peak in fidelity susceptibility and the onset of maximal chaos at the ergodicity-breaking critical point.

Local integrals of motion in dipole-conserving models with Hilbert space fragmentation

Hilbert space fragmentation is an ergodicity breaking phenomenon, in which Hamiltonian shatters into exponentially many dynamically disconnected sectors. In many fragmented systems, these sectors can be labelled by statistically localized integrals of motion, which are {\em nonlocal} operators. We study the paradigmatic nearest-neighbor pair hopping (PH) model exhibiting the so-called strong fragmentation. We show that this model hosts local integrals of motion (LIOMs), which correspond to frozen density modes with long wavelengths. The latter modes become subdiffusive when longer-range pair hoppings are allowed. Finally, we make a connection with a tilted (Stark) chain. Contrary to the dipole-conserving effective models, the tilted chain is shown to support either Hamiltonian or dipole moment as an LIOM. Numerical results are obtained from a numerical algorithm, in which finding LIOMs is reduced to the data compression problem.

Critical quantum dynamics of observables at eigenstate transitions

It is an outstanding goal to unveil the key features of quantum dynamics at eigenstate transitions. Focusing on quadratic fermionic Hamiltonians that exhibit localization transitions, we identify physical observables that exhibit scale-invariant critical dynamics at the transition when quenched from the initially localized charge density-wave states. The identification is based on two ingredients: (a) A relationship between the time evolution of observables in a many-body state and the transition probabilities of single-particle states, and (b) scale invariance of transition probabilities, which generalizes the corresponding recent result for survival probabilities [M. Hopjan and L. Vidmar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 060404 (2023); Phys. Rev. Res. 5, 043301 (2023)]. These properties suggest that the scale-invariant critical dynamics in the quantum-quench dynamics is also exhibited by the observables, which share the common eigenbasis with the Hamiltonian before the quench. Focusing on experimentally relevant observables such as site occupations and the particle imbalance, we numerically demonstrate their critical behavior at the eigenstate transitions in the three-dimensional Anderson model and the one-dimensional Aubry-André model model.

Single-quasiparticle eigenstate thermalization

Quadratic Hamiltonians that exhibit single-particle quantum chaos are called quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians. One of their hallmarks is single-particle eigenstate thermalization introduced in Phys. Rev. B 104, 214203 (2021), which describes statistical properties of matrix elements of observables in single-particle eigenstates. However, the latter has been studied only in quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians that obey the U(1) symmetry. Here, we focus on quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians that break the U(1) symmetry and, hence, their "single-particle" eigenstates are actually single-quasiparticle excitations introduced on the top of a many-body state. We study their wave functions and matrix elements of one-body observables, for which we introduce the notion of single-quasiparticle eigenstate thermalization. Focusing on spinless fermion Hamiltonians in three dimensions with local hopping, pairing and on-site disorder, we also study the properties of disorder-induced near zero modes, which give rise to a sharp peak in the density of states at zero energy. Finally, we numerically show equilibration of observables in many-body eigenstates after a quantum quench. We analytically prove that it is a consequence of single-quasiparticle eigenstate thermalization, in analogy to the U(1) symmetric case from Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 060401 (2023).

Generalized thermalization in quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians

Thermalization (generalized thermalization) in nonintegrable (integrable) quantum systems requires two ingredients: equilibration and agreement with the predictions of the Gibbs (generalized Gibbs) ensemble. We prove that observables that exhibit eigenstate thermalization in single-particle sector equilibrate in many-body sectors of quantum-chaotic quadratic models. Remarkably, the same observables do not exhibit eigenstate thermalization in many-body sectors (we establish that there are exponentially many outliers). Hence, the generalized Gibbs ensemble is generally needed to describe their expectation values after equilibration, and it is characterized by Lagrange multipliers that are smooth functions of single-particle energies.

Signatures of quantum chaos in low-energy mixtures of few fermions

The low energy dynamics of mesoscopic systems strongly depends on the presence of internal equilibration. For this reason, a better interpretation of ultracold atom experiments requires a more accurate understanding of how quantum chaos manifests itself in these systems. In this paper, we consider a simple but experimentally relevant one-dimensional system of a few ultracold fermions moving in a double-well potential. We analyze its many-body spectral properties, which are commonly used to trace quantum chaos. We observe some signatures of quantum chaos already in the system with three particles. Generally, these signatures become more pronounced when fermions are evenly added to both components. On the contrary, they become suppressed when the particle imbalance is increased.

Single-particle eigenstate thermalization in quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians

We study the matrix elements of local and nonlocal operators in the single-particle eigenstates of two paradigmatic quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians; the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK2) model and the three-dimensional Anderson model below the localization transition. We show that they display eigenstate thermalization for normalized observables. Specifically, we show that the diagonal matrix elements exhibit vanishing eigenstate-to-eigenstate fluctuations, and a variance proportional to the inverse Hilbert space dimension. We also demonstrate that the ratio between the variance of the diagonal and the off-diagonal matrix elements is $2$, as predicted by the random matrix theory. We study distributions of matrix elements of observables and establish that they need not be Gaussian. We identify the class of observables for which the distributions are Gaussian.

Entanglement in many-body eigenstates of quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians

In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 180604 (2020)], we introduced a closed-form analytic expression for the average bipartite von Neumann entanglement entropy of many-body eigenstates of random quadratic Hamiltonians. Namely, of Hamiltonians whose single-particle eigenstates have random coefficients in the position basis. A paradigmatic Hamiltonian for which the expression is valid is the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK2) model in its Dirac fermion formulation. Here we show that the applicability of our result is much broader. Most prominently, it is also relevant for local Hamiltonians such as the three-dimensional (3D) Anderson model at weak disorder. Moreover, it describes the average entanglement entropy in Hamiltonians without particle-number conservation, such as the SYK2 model in the Majorana fermion formulation and the 3D Anderson model with additional terms that break particle-number conservation. We extend our analysis to the average bipartite second Rényi entanglement entropy of eigenstates of the same quadratic Hamiltonians, which is derived analytically and tested numerically. We conjecture that our results for the entanglement entropies of many-body eigenstates apply to quadratic Hamiltonians whose single-particle eigenstates exhibit quantum chaos, to which we refer as quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians.

Long-lived non-thermal states in pumped one-dimensional systems of hard-core bosons

We study a unitary time evolution of a symmetry-broken state in a form of a charge density wave in a finite system of interacting hard-core bosons, which can be mapped onto the XXZ Heisenberg chain. Moreover, we introduce a spatially-homogenous and time-dependent vector potential that mimics a short laser pulse. We establish the range of amplitudes of the vector potential for which the onset of charge density wave order can be controlled. We propose a protocol that reveals non-thermal long-lived states, which are characterized by a non-zero charge density wave order translated by one lattice site with respect to its initial formation. The life times of these states are large in comparison to all typical times given by the parameters of the system. They increase with the number of lattice sites, but are significantly suppressed by the integrablility breaking perturbations. In view of these findings, we speculate that the long-lived non-thermal states exist in the thermodynamic limit.

Eigenstate Entanglement Entropy in Random Quadratic Hamiltonians

The eigenstate entanglement entropy has been recently shown to be a powerful tool to distinguish integrable from generic quantum-chaotic models. In integrable models, a unique feature of the average eigenstate entanglement entropy (over all Hamiltonian eigenstates) is that the volume-law coefficient depends on the subsystem fraction. Hence, it deviates from the maximal (subsystem fraction independent) value encountered in quantum-chaotic models. Using random matrix theory for quadratic Hamiltonians, we obtain a closed-form expression for the average eigenstate entanglement entropy as a function of the subsystem fraction. We test its correctness against numerical results for the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. We also show that it describes the average entanglement entropy of eigenstates of the power-law random banded matrix model (in the delocalized regime), and that it is close but not the same as the result for quadratic models that exhibit localization in quasimomentum space.

Unconventional pairing in one-dimensional systems of a few mass-imbalanced ultracold fermions

We study the ground-state properties of a two-component fermionic mixture effectively confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. We consider scenarios when numbers of particles in components are the same but particles have different masses. We examine whether it is possible to detect signatures of an unconventional pairing between opposite-spin fermions in the presence of attractive interactions. For this purpose, we perform the exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian and study the two-particle reduced density matrix. In agreement with expectations, we confirm that the many-body ground state is dominated by conventional pairs with a negligible total momentum for a small mass imbalance. Furthermore, we show that for sufficiently large mass ratios the domination of fundamentally different pairs is established and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase is supported. Finally, we argue that the two mechanisms can coexist in the regime of moderate mass ratios. Due to the current experimental progress in obtaining ultra-cold fermionic systems in a few-body regime, our predictions may have some importance for the upcoming experiments.
