Light-quark connected intermediate-window contributions to the muon $g-2$ hadronic vacuum polarization from lattice QCD

We present a lattice-QCD calculation of the light-quark connected contribution to window observables associated with the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\mathrm{HVP,LO}}$. We employ the MILC Collaboration's isospin-symmetric QCD gauge-field ensembles, which contain four flavors of dynamical highly-improved-staggered quarks with four lattice spacings between $a\approx 0.06$-$0.15$~fm and close-to-physical quark masses. We consider several effective-field-theory-based schemes for finite-volume and other lattice corrections and combine the results via Bayesian model averaging to obtain robust estimates of the associated systematic uncertainties. After unblinding, our final results for the intermediate and ``W2'' windows are $a^{ll,{\mathrm W}}_μ(\mathrm{conn.})=206.6(1.0) \times 10^{-10}$ and $a^{ll,\mathrm {W2}}_μ(\mathrm{conn.}) = 100.7(3.2)\times 10^{-10}$, respectively.

D-meson semileptonic decays to pseudoscalars from four-flavor lattice QCD

We present lattice-QCD calculations of the hadronic form factors for the semileptonic decays $D\toπ\ellν$, $D\to K\ellν$, and $D_s\to K\ellν$. Our calculation uses the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for all valence and sea quarks and includes $N_f=2+1+1$ MILC ensembles with lattice spacings ranging from $a\approx0.12$ fm down to $0.042$ fm. At most lattice spacings, an ensemble with physical-mass light quarks is included. The HISQ action allows all the quarks to be treated with the same relativistic light-quark action, allowing for nonperturbative renormalization using partial conservation of the vector current. We combine our results with experimental measurements of the differential decay rates to determine $|V_{cd}|^{D\toπ}=0.2238(11)^{\rm Expt}(15)^{\rm QCD}(04)^{\rm EW}(02)^{\rm SIB}[22]^{\rm QED}$ and $|V_{cs}|^{D\to K}=0.9589(23)^{\rm Expt}(40)^{\rm QCD}(15)^{\rm EW}(05)^{\rm SIB}[95]^{\rm QED}$ This result for $|V_{cd}|$ is the most precise to date, with a lattice-QCD error that is, for the first time for the semileptonic extraction, at the same level as the experimental error. Using recent measurements from BES III, we also give the first-ever determination of $|V_{cd}|^{D_s\to K}=0.258(15)^{\rm Expt}(01)^{\rm QCD}[03]^{\rm QED}$ from $D_s\to K \ellν$. Our results also furnish new Standard Model calculations of the lepton flavor universality ratios $R^{D\toπ}=0.98671(17)^{\rm QCD}[500]^{\rm QED}$, $R^{D\to K}=0.97606(16)^{\rm QCD}[500]^{\rm QED}$, and $R^{D_s\to K}=0.98099(10)^{\rm QCD}[500]^{\rm QED}$, which are consistent within $2σ$ with experimental measurements. Our extractions of $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$, when combined with a value for $|V_{cb}|$, provide the most precise test of second-row CKM unitarity, finding agreement with unitarity at the level of one standard deviation.

Expected Precision of Higgs Boson Partial Widths within the Standard Model

We discuss the sources of uncertainty in calculations of the partial widths of the Higgs boson within the Standard Model. The uncertainties come from two sources: the truncation of perturbation theory and the uncertainties in input parameters. We review the current status of perturbative calculations and note that these are already reaching the parts-per-mil level of accuracy for the major decay modes. The main sources of uncertainty will then come from the parametric dependences on alpha_s, m_b, and m_c. Knowledge of these parameters is systematically improvable through lattice gauge theory calculations. We estimate the precision that lattice QCD will achieve in the next decade and the corresponding precision of the Standard Model predictions for Higgs boson partial widths.

The CKM Matrix from Lattice QCD

Lattice QCD plays an essential role in testing and determining the parameters of the CKM theory of flavor mixing and CP violation. Very high precisions are required for lattice calculations analysing CKM data; I discuss the prospects for achieving them. Lattice calculations will also play a role in investigating flavor mixing and CP violation beyond the Standard Model.

Mass of the B_c Meson in Three-Flavor Lattice QCD

We use lattice QCD to predict the mass of the $B_c$ meson. We use the MILC Collaboration's ensembles of lattice gauge fields, which have a quark sea with two flavors much lighter than a third. Our final result is $m_{B_c}=6304\pm12^{+18}_{- 0} MeV$. The first error bar is a sum in quadrature of statistical and systematic uncertainties, and the second is an estimate of heavy-quark discretization effects.

D_s spectrum and leptonic decays with Fermilab heavy quarks and improved staggered light quarks

We present preliminary results for the D_s meson spectrum and decay constants in unquenched lattice QCD. Simulations are carried out with 2+1 dynamical quarks using gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. We use the ``asqtad'' a^2 improved staggered action for the light quarks, and the clover heavy quark action with the Fermilab interpretation. We compare our spectrum results with the newly discovered 0+ and 1+ states in the D_s system.

Semileptonic decays of $D$ mesons in unquenched lattice QCD

We present our preliminary results for semileptonic form factors of $D$ mesons in unquenched lattice QCD. Simulations are carried out with $n_f=2+1$ dynamical quarks using gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. For the valence quarks, we adopt an improved staggered light quark action and the clover heavy quark action. Our results for $D \to K$ and $D \to π$ form factors at $q^2=0$ are in agreement with the experimental values.

Charmonium with three flavors of dynamical quarks

We present a calculation of the charmonium spectrum with three flavors of dynamical staggered quarks from gauge configurations that were generated by the MILC collaboration. We use the Fermilab action for the valence charm quarks. Our calculation of the spin-averaged 1P--1S and 2S--1S splittings yields a determination of the strong coupling, with $\ams(M_Z) = 0.119 (4)$.

Lattice calculation of the zero-recoil form factor of anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino: toward a model independent determination of |V(cb)|

We develop a new method in lattice QCD to calculate the form factor F(1) at zero recoil. This is the main theoretical ingredient needed to determine |V(cb)| from the exclusive decay anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino. We introduce three ratios, in which most of statistical and systematic error cancels, making a precise calculation possible. We fit the heavy-quark mass dependence directly, and extract the 1/m_Q^2 and three of the four 1/m_Q^3 corrections in the heavy-quark expansion. In this paper we show how the method works in the quenched approximation, obtaining F(1) = 0.913 (+0.024-0.017)(+/-0.016)(+0.003-0.014)(+0.000-0.016)(+0.006-0.014) where the uncertainties come, respectively, from statistics and fitting, matching lattice gauge theory to QCD, lattice spacing dependence, light quark mass effects, and the quenched approximation. We also discuss how to reduce these uncertainties and, thus, to obtain a model-independent determination of |V(cb)|.

Highly Improved Naive and Staggered Fermions

We present a new action for highly improved staggered fermions. We show that perturbative calculations for the new action are well-behaved where those of the conventional staggered action are badly behaved. We discuss the effects of the new terms in controlling flavor mixing, and discuss the design of operators for the action.

The Semileptonic Decays $B\toπlν$ and $D\toπlν$ from Lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the form factors and differential decay rates for semileptonic decays of the heavy-light mesons $B$ and $D$ to the final state $πlν$. The results are obtained with three methodological improvements over previous lattice calculations: a matching procedure that reduces heavy-quark lattice artifacts, the first study of lattice-spacing dependence, and the introduction of kinematic cuts to reduce model dependence. We show that the main systematics are controllable (within the quenched approximation) and outline how the calculations could be improved to aid current experiments in the determination of~$|V_{ub}|$ and~$|V_{cd}|$.

Lattice QCD calculation of $\bar{B}\to Dl\barν$ decay form factors at zero recoil

A lattice QCD calculation of the $\bar{B}\to Dl\barν$ decay form factors is presented. We obtain the value of the form factor $h_+(w)$ at the zero-recoil limit $w=1$ with high precision by considering a ratio of correlation functions in which the bulk of the uncertainties cancels. The other form factor $h_-(w)$ is calculated, for small recoil momenta, from a similar ratio. In both cases, the heavy quark mass dependence is observed through direct calculations with several combinations of initial and final heavy quark masses. Our results are $h_+(1) = 1.007(6)(2)(3)$ and $h_-(1)=-0.107(28)(04)(^{10}_{30})$. For both the first error is statistical, the second stems from the uncertainty in adjusting the heavy quark masses, and the last from omitted radiative corrections. Combining these results, we obtain a precise determination of the physical combination $F_{B\to D}(1)=1.058(^{20}_{17})$, where the mentioned systematic errors are added in quadrature. The dependence on lattice spacing and the effect of quenching are not yet included, but with our method they should be a fraction of $F_{B\to D}-1$.

Spectroscopy of B_s and D_s Mesons

We study Bs and Ds spectroscopy in quenched lattice QCD using the Fermilab approach to heavy quarks. We obtain results at four lattice spacings, $a$, using $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks. We compare and contrast the various methods for heavy quarks on the lattice, discussing discussing which methods work best for different physical systems and the ease with which calculations may be performed.

B and D Meson Decay Constants in Lattice QCD

We have calculated the decay constants of B and $D$ mesons with lattice QCD. We use an $O(a)$ improved action that takes light quark actions as a starting point, tuned so that it can be directly applied at the physical masses of the $b$ and $c$ quarks. Our results are $f_B = 164 \err{+14}{-11} \pm 8$ MeV, $f_{B_s} = 185 \err{+13}{-8} \pm 9$ MeV, $f_D = 194 \err{+14}{-10} \pm 10$ MeV, and $f_{D_s} = 213 \err{+14}{-11} \pm 11$ MeV in the quenched approximation. The first error in each case is statistical, and the second is from perturbation theory. We show that discretization errors are under control in our approach, and smaller than our statistical errors. The effects of the quenched approximation may raise our quenched result by up to 10%.
