Calabi quasimorphisms for the symplectic ball

We prove that the group of compactly supported symplectomorphisms of the standard symplectic ball admits a continuum of linearly independent real-valued homogeneous quasimorphisms. In addition these quasimorphisms are Lipschitz in the Hofer metric and have the following property: the value of each such quasimorphism on any symplectomorphism supported in any "sufficiently small" open subset of the ball equals the Calabi invariant of the symplectomorphism. By a "sufficiently small" open subset we mean that it can be displaced from itself by a symplectomorphism of the ball. As a byproduct we show that the (Lagrangian) Clifford torus in the complex projective space cannot be displaced from itself by a Hamiltonian isotopy.

Geometry of symplectic intersections

In this paper we survey several intersection and non-intersection phenomena appearing in the realm of symplectic topology. We discuss their implications and finally outline some new relations of the subject to algebraic geometry.

Propagation in Hamiltonian dynamics and relative symplectic homology

The main result asserts the existence of noncontractible periodic orbits for compactly supported time dependent Hamiltonian systems on the unit cotangent bundle of the torus or of a negatively curved manifold whenever the generating Hamiltonian is sufficiently large over the zero section. The proof is based on Floer homology and on the notion of a relative symplectic capacity. Applications include results about propagation properties of sequential Hamiltonian systems, periodic orbits on hypersurfaces, Hamiltonian circle actions, and smooth Lagrangian skeletons in Stein manifolds.

Constructing new ample divisors out of old ones

We prove a gluing theorem which allows to construct an ample divisor on a rational surface from two given ample divisors on simpler surfaces. This theorem combined with the Cremona action on the ample cone gives rise to an algorithm for constructing new ample divisors. We then propose a conjecture relating continued fractions approximations and Seshadri-like constants of line bundles over rational surfaces. By applying our algorithm recursively we verify our conjecture in many cases and obtain new asymptotic estimates on these constants. Finally, we explain the intuition behind the gluing theorem in terms of symplectic geometry and propose generalizations.

Symplectic packing in dimension 4

We discuss closed symplectic 4-manifolds which admit full symplectic packings by $N$ equal balls for large $N$'s. We give a homological criterion for recognizing such manifolds. As a corollary we prove that ${\Bbb C}P^2$ can be fully packed by $N$ equal balls for every $N\geq 9$.

Connectedness of spaces of symplectic embeddings

We prove that the space of symplectic packings of ${\Bbb C}P^2$ by $k$ equal balls is connected for $3\leq k\leq 6$. The proof is based on Gromov-Witten invariants and on the inflation technique due to Lalonde and McDuff.
