Flat band carrier confinement in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Magic angle twisted bilayer graphene has emerged as a powerful platform for studying strongly correlated electron physics, owing to its almost dispersionless low-energy bands and the ability to tune the band filling by electrostatic gating. Techniques to control the twist angle between graphene layers have led to rapid experimental progress but improving sample quality is essential for separating the delicate correlated-electron physics from disorder effects. Owing to the 2D nature of the system and the relatively low carrier density, the samples are highly susceptible to small doping inhomogeneity which can drastically modify the local potential landscape. This potential disorder is distinct from the twist-angle variation which has been studied elsewhere. Here, by using low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy and planar tunneling junction measurements, we demonstrate that flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene can amplify small doping inhomogeneity that surprisingly leads to carrier confinement, which in graphene could previously only be realized in the presence of a strong magnetic field.

Study of 57Fe Mossbauer effect in RFe2Zn20 ( R = Lu, Yb, Gd)

We report measurements of 57Fe Mossbauer spectra for RFe2Zn20 ( R = Lu, Yb, Gd) from ~ 4.5 K to room temperature. The obtained isomer shift values are very similar for all three compounds, their temperature dependence was analyzed within the Debye model and resulted in an estimate of the Debye temperatures of 450-500 K. The values of quadrupole splitting at room temperature change with the cubic lattice constant a in a linear fashion. For GdFe2Zn20, ferromagnetic order is seen as an appearance of a sextet in the spectra. The 57Fe site hyperfine field for T = 0 was evaluated to be ~ 2.4 T.

Upper critical field of KFe2As2 under pressure: A test for the change in the superconducting gap structure

We report measurements of electrical resistivity under pressure to 5.8 GPa, magnetization to 6.7 GPa,and ac susceptibility to 7.1 GPa in KFe2As2. The previously reported change of slope in the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc(p) at a pressure p0=1.8 GPa is confirmed, and Tc(p) is found to be nearly constant above p0 up to 7.1 GPa. The T-p phase diagram is very sensitive to the pressure conditions as a consequence of the anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependence of Tc. Across p0, a change in the behavior of the upper critical field is revealed through a scaling analysis of the slope of Hc2 with the effective mass as determined from the A coefficient of the T2 term of the temperature-dependent resistivity. We show that this scaling provides a quantitative test for the changes of the superconducting gap structure and suggests the development of a kz modulation of the superconducting gap above p0 as a most likely explanation.
