Automata and cells in affine Weyl groups

Let W~ be an affine Weyl group, and let C be a left, right, or two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cell in W~. Let Reduced (C) be the set of all reduced expressions of elements of C, regarded as a formal language in the sense of the theory of computation. We show that Reduced (C) is a regular language. Hence the reduced expressions of the elements in any Kazhdan--Lusztig cell can be enumerated by a finite state automaton.

Hecke operators and Hilbert modular forms

Let F be a real quadratic field with ring of integers O and with class number 1. Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of GL_2 (O). We describe a technique to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology H^3 (Gamma; C). For F real quadratic this cohomology group contains the cuspidal cohomology corresponding to cuspidal Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight 2. Hence this technique gives a way to compute the Hecke action on these Hilbert modular forms.

Cohomology of Congruence Subgroups of SL(4,\Z) II

In a previous paper [3] we computed cohomology groups H^5 (Gamma_0 (N), \C), where Gamma_0 (N) is a certain congruence subgroup of SL (4, \Z), for a range of levels N. In this note we update this earlier work by extending the range of levels and describe cuspidal cohomology classes and additional boundary phenomena found since the publication of [3]. The cuspidal cohomology classes in this paper are the first cuspforms for GL(4) concretely constructed in terms of Betti cohomology.

Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series of type A_2

A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series is a Dirichlet series in several complex variables attached to a root system Phi. The number of variables equals the rank r of the root system, and the series satisfies a group of functional equations isomorphic to the Weyl group W of Phi. In this paper we construct a Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series over the rational function field using n-th order Gauss sums attached to the root system of type A_2. The basic technique is to construct a rational function in r variables invariant under a certain action of W, and use this to build a ``local factor'' of the global series.

On the p-parts of quadratic Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series

Let Phi be a reduced root system of rank r. A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for Phi is a Dirichlet series in r complex variables s_1,...,s_r, initially converging for Re(s_i) sufficiently large, which has meromorphic continuation to C^r and satisfies functional equations under the transformations of C^r corresponding to the Weyl group of Phi. Two constructions of such series are available, one based on summing products of n-th order Gauss sums, the second based on averaging a certain group action over the Weyl group. In this paper we study these constructions and the relationship between them, and give evidence that when n=2 and Phi=A_r they yield the same multiple Dirichlet series.

Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series constructed from quadratic characters

We construct multiple Dirichlet series in several complex variables whose coefficients involve quadratic residue symbols. The series are shown to have an analytic continuation and satisfy a certain group of functional equations. These are the first examples of an infinite collection of unstable Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in greater than two variables.

Robert MacPherson and arithmetic groups

We survey contributions of Robert MacPherson to the theory of arithmetic groups. There are two main areas we discuss: (i) explicit reduction theory for Siegel modular threefolds, and (ii) constructions of compactifications of locally symmetric spaces. The former is joint work with Mark McConnell, the latter with Lizhen Ji.

Lattice polytopes, Hecke operators, and the Ehrhart polynomial

Let P be a simple lattice polytope. We define an action of the Hecke operators on E (P), the Ehrhart polynomial of P, and describe their effect on the coefficients of E (P). We also describe how the Brion-Vergne formula transforms under the Hecke operators for nonsingular lattice polytopes P.

A characterization of Dynkin elements

We give a characterization of the Dynkin elements of a simple Lie algebra. Namely, we prove that one-half of a Dynkin element is the unique point of minimal length in its N-region. In type A_n this translates into a statement about the regions determined by the canonical left Kazhdan-Lusztig cells. Some possible generalizations are explored in the last section.

Geometry of the tetrahedron space

Let X^{circ} be the space of all labeled tetrahedra in P^{3}. In [BGS] we constructed a smooth symmetric compactification X-tilde of X^{circ}. In this article we show that the complement X-tilde smallsetminus X^{circ} is a divisor with normal crossings, and we compute the cohomology ring H^*(X-tilde;Q).

Units, polyhedra, and a conjecture of Satake

Let $F/\QQ $ be a totally real number field of degree $n$. We explicitly evaluate a certain sum of rational functions over a infinite fan of $F$-rational polyhedral cones in terms of the norm map $\Norm \colon F\to \QQ $. This completes Sczech's combinatorial proof of Satake's conjecture connecting the special values of $L$-series associated to cusp singularities with intersection numbers of divisors in their toroidal resolutions.

Toric modular forms of higher weight

In two previous papers we used the geometry of complete polyhedral fans to construct a subring $\TTT (l)$ of the modular forms on $Γ_{1} (l)$, and showed that for weight two the cuspidal part of $\TTT (l)$ coincides with the space of cusp forms of analytic rank zero. In this paper we show that in weights greater than two, the cuspidal part of $\TTT (l)$ coincides with the space of all cusp forms.

Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols for the group SL(n)

We define Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols on the group SL(n), generalizing a construction of the first author. We show that, in the case of series attached to the minimal parabolic subgroup, our series converges for all points in a suitable cone. We conclude with examples for SL(2) and SL(3).

Toric modular forms and nonvanishing of L-functions

In a previous paper \cite{BorGunn}, we defined the space of toric forms $\TTT(l)$, and showed that it is a finitely generated subring of the holomorphic modular forms of integral weight on the congruence group $Γ_1(l)$. In this article we prove the following theorem: modulo Eisenstein series, the weight two toric forms coincide exactly with the vector space generated by all cusp eigenforms f such that $L(f,1) \not = 0$. The proof uses work of Merel, and involves an explicit computation of the intersection pairing on Manin symbols.

Wonderful blowups associated to group actions

A group action on a smooth variety provides it with the natural stratification by irreducible components of the fixed point sets of arbitrary subgroups. We show that the corresponding maximal wonderful blowup in the sense of MacPherson-Procesi has only abelian stabilizers. The result is inspired by the abelianization algorithm of Batyrev.

Cohomology of congruence subgroups of SL(4,Z)

Let $N>1$ be an integer, and let $Γ= Γ_0 (N) \subset \SL_4 (\Z)$ be the subgroup of matrices with bottom row congruent to $(0,0,0,*)\mod N$. We compute $H^5 (Γ; \C) $ for a range of $N$, and compute the action of some Hecke operators on many of these groups. We relate the classes we find to classes coming from the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification, to Eisenstein series, and to classical holomorphic modular forms of weights 2 and 4.
