Greenś Mapping and Julia Sets

In March 1999, the first named author (Binder) posed the problem of showing that a ``good direction'' $ψ\in [0,2]$ exists, for any Green's mapping $T:H\rightarrow\tilde Ω$, i.e., \begin{equation}\label{binder} \int\limits_0\limits^{1} |T''(re^{iπψ})|dr <\infty, \quad\text{ for at least one } \quad ψ\in [0,2]. \end{equation} Presently this problem is open even in the special case where $\partial Ω$ is a uniformly perfect subset of the real line. In this paper we obtain a positive solution when $Ω= \overline{C} \setminus E_0$ where $E_0 \subset R $ is the Julia set of an expanding quadratic polynomial.

Martingale Type, the Gamlen-Gaudet Construction and a Greedy Algorithm

In the present paper we identify those filtered probability spaces $(Ω,\, \mathcal{F},\, \left(\mathcal{F}_n\right),\, \mathbb{P})$ that determine already the martingale type of a Banach space $X$. We isolate intrinsic conditions on the filtration $(\mathcal{F}_n)$ of purely atomic $σ$-algebras which determine that the upper $\ell^p$ estimates \[ \|f\|_{L^p(Ω,\, X)}^p\leq C^p\left( \|\mathbb{E} f|\mathcal{F}_0\|^p_{L^p(Ω,\, X)}+\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \|Δ_n f\|^p_{L^p(Ω,\, X)}\right),\qquad f\in L^p(Ω,X)\] imply that the Banach space $X$ is of martingale type $p$. Our paper complements \mbox{G. Pisier's} investigation \cite{Pisier1975} and continues the work by S. Geiss and second named author in \cite{Geiss2008}.

Multipliers on bi-parameter Haar system Hardy spaces

Let $(h_I)$ denote the standard Haar system on $[0,1]$, indexed by $I\in \mathcal D$, the set of dyadic intervals and $h_I\otimes h_J$ denote the tensor product $(s,t)\mapsto h_I(s) h_J(t)$, $I,J\in \mathcal D$. We consider a class of two-parameter function spaces which are completions of the linear span $\mathcal{V}(δ^2)$ of $h_I\otimes h_J$, $I,J\in \mathcal D$. This class contains all the spaces of the form $X(Y)$, where $X$ and $Y$ are either the Lebesgue spaces $L_p[0,1]$ or the Hardy spaces $H_p[0,1]$, $1\le p<\infty$. We say that $D\colon X(Y)\to X(Y)$ is a Haar multiplier if $D(h_I\otimes h_J) = d_{I,J} h_I\otimes h_J$, where $d_{I,J}\in \mathbb{R}$, and ask which more elementary operators factor through $D$. A decisive role plays the {\em Capon projection} $\mathcal{C}\colon \mathcal{V}(δ^2)\to \mathcal{V}(δ^2)$ given by $\mathcal{C} h_I\otimes h_J = h_I\otimes h_J$ if $|I|\leq |J|$, and $\mathcal{C} h_I\otimes h_J = 0$ if $|I| > |J|$, as our main result highlights: Given any bounded Haar multiplier $D\colon X(Y)\to X(Y)$, there exist $λ,μ\in \mathbb{R}$ such that \begin{equation*} \text{$λ\mathcal{C} + μ(\mathrm{Id}-\mathcal{C})$ approximately $1$-projectionally factors through $D$,} \end{equation*} i.e., for all $η>0$, there exist bounded operators $A,B$ so that $AB$ is the identity operator $\mathrm{Id}$, $\|A\|\cdot\|B\|=1$ and $\|λ\mathcal{C} + μ(\mathrm{Id}-\mathcal{C}) - ADB\|<η$. Additionally, if $\mathcal{C}$ is unbounded on $X(Y)$, then $λ= μ$ and then $\mathrm{Id}$ either factors through $D$ or $\mathrm{Id}-D$.

The space $L_1(L_p)$ is primary for $1<p<\infty$

The classical Banach space $L_1(L_p)$ consists of measurable scalar functions $f$ on the unit square for which $$\|f\| = \int_0^1\Big(\int_0^1 |f(x,y)|^p dy\Big)^{1/p}dx < \infty.$$ We show that $L_1(L_p)$ $(1 < p < \infty)$ is primary, meaning that, whenever $L_1(L_p) = E\oplus F$ then either $E$ or $F$ is isomorphic to $L_1(L_p)$. More generally we show that $L_1(X)$ is primary, for a large class of rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces.

Almost everywhere Convergence of Spline Sequences

We prove the analogue of the Martingale Convergence Theorem for polynomial spline sequences. Given a natural number $k $ and a sequence $(t_i)$ of knots in $[0,1]$ with multiplicity $\le k-1$, we let $P_n $ be the orthogonal projection onto the space of spline polynomials in $[0,1] $ of degree $k-1$ corresponding to the grid $(t_i)_{i=1}^n$. Let $X$ be a Banach space with the Radon-Nikodým property. Let $(g_n)$ be a bounded sequence in the Bochner-Lebesgue space $L^1_X [0,1]$ satisfying $$ g_n = P_n ( g_{n+1} ),\qquad n \in \mathbb N . $$ We prove the existence of $\lim_{n\to \infty} g_n(t) $ in $X$ for almost every $t \in [0,1]. $ Already in the scalar valued case $X = \mathbb R $ the result is new.

Sharp Complex Convexity Estimates

In this paper we determine the value of the best constants in the 2-uniform PL-convexity estimates of $\mathbb C$. This solves a problem posed by W. J. Davis, D. J. H. Garling and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann.

Strategically reproducible bases and the factorization property

We introduce the concept of strategically reproducible bases in Banach spaces and show that operators which have large diagonal with respect to strategically reproducible bases are factors of the identity. We give several examples of classical Banach spaces in which the Haar system is strategically reproducible: multi-parameter Lebesgue spaces, mixed-norm Hardy spaces and most significantly the space $L^1$. Moreover, we show the strategical reproducibility is inherited by unconditional sums.

Factorization of the identity through operators with large diagonal

Given a Banach space~$X$ with an unconditional basis, we consider the following question: does the identity on~$X$ factor through every operator on~$X$ with large diagonal relative to the unconditional basis? We show that on Gowers' unconditional Banach space, there exists an operator for which the answer to the question is negative. By contrast, for any operator on the mixed-norm Hardy spaces $H^p(H^q)$, where $1 \leq p,q < \infty$, with the bi-parameter Haar system, this problem always has a positive solution. The spaces $L^p, 1 < p < \infty$, were treated first by Andrew~[{\em Studia Math.}~1979].

Interpolation for Hardy Spaces: Marcinkiewicz decomposition, Complex Interpolation and Holomorphic Martingales

The real and complex interpolation spaces for the classical Hardy spaces $H^1$ and $H^\infty$ were determined in 1983 by P.W. Jones. Due to the analytic constraints the associated Marcinkiewicz decomposition gives rise to a delicate approximation problem for the $L^ 1$ metric. Specifically for $ f \in H^p$ the size of $$ {\rm{inf}} \{ \| f - f_1 \| _1 \,:\, f_1 \in H^\infty ,\, \|f_1\|_\infty \le λ\}$$ needs to be determined for any $ λ>0 $. In the present paper we develop a new set of truncation formulae for obtaining the Marcinkiewicz decomposition of $(H^1, H^\infty) $. We revisit the real and complex interpolation theory for Hardy spaces by examining our newly found formulae.

Absolutely summing operators and atomic decomposition in bi-parameter Hardy spaces

For $f \in H^p(δ^2)$, $0<p\leq 2$, with Haar expansion $f=\sum f_{I \times J}h_{I\times J}$ we constructively determine the Pietsch measure of the $2$-summing multiplication operator \[\mathcal{M}_f:\ell^{\infty} \rightarrow H^p(δ^2), \quad (φ_{I\times J}) \mapsto \sum φ_{I\times J}f_{I \times J}h_{I \times J}. \] Our method yields a constructive proof of Pisier's decomposition of $f \in H^p(δ^2)$ \[|f|=|x|^{1-θ}|y|^θ\quad\quad \text{ and }\quad\quad \|x\|_{X_0}^{1-θ}\|y\|^θ_{H^2(δ^2)}\leq C\|f\|_{H^p(δ^2)}, \] where $X_0$ is Pisier's extrapolation lattice associated to $H^p(δ^2)$ and $H^2(δ^2)$. Our construction of the Pietsch measure for the multiplication operator $\mathcal{M}_f$ involves the Haar coefficients of $f$ and its atomic decomposition. We treated the one-parameter $H^p$-spaces in [P.F.X Müller, J.Penteker, $p$-summing multiplication operators, dyadic Hardy spaces and atomic decomposition, Houston Journal Math.,41(2):639-668,2015.].

Localization and projections on bi-parameter BMO

We prove that for any operator $T$ on bi--parameter BMO the identity factors through $T$ or $I - T$. Bourgain's localization method provides the conceptual framework of our proof. It consists in replacing the factorization problem on the non--separable bi--parameter BMO by its localized, finite dimensional counterpart. We solve the resulting finite dimensional factorization problems by exploiting the geometry and combinatorics of colored dyadic rectangles.

p-Summing Multiplication Operators, dyadic Hardy Spaces and atomic Decomposition

We constructively determine the Pietsch measure of the 2-summing multiplication operator \[\mathcal{M}_u:\ell^{\infty} \rightarrow H^p, \quad (φ_I) \mapsto \sum φ_Ix_Ih_I. \] Our construction of the Pietsch measure for the multiplication operator $\mathcal{M}_u$ involves the Haar coefficients of $u$ and its atomic decomposition.
