Non-invertible symmetries and selection rules for RG flows of coset models

We analyze superselection sectors, non-invertible symmetries and selection rules for RG flows triggered via perturbations of a UV two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT$_2$). To this end we describe a method whose input is the local data, and whose output is the set of submodels of the modular invariant completions. We explain how this output set provides a classification of superselection sectors (DHR categories and Q-systems) and of topological defect lines, leading to a unified and potentially complete approach to selection rules for RG flows. This method is applied to scenarios in which the UV is a coset or a parafermion model. For these CFT$_2$ we explicitly find all submodels of the diagonal modular invariants. Our results gives selection rules that unify several known facts about such RG flows, while also allowing us to find new aspects.

Strong zero modes in integrable spin-S chains

We derive exact strong zero mode (ESZM) operators for integrable spin-S chains with open boundary conditions and a boundary field. Their locality properties are generally weaker than in the previously known cases, but they still imply infinite coherence times in the vicinity of the edges. We explain how such integrable chains possess multiple ground states describing a first-order quantum phase transition, and that the odd number of such states for integer S makes the weaker locality properties necessary. We make contact with more traditional approaches by showing how the ESZM for S=1/2 acts on energy eigenstates given by solutions of the Bethe equations.

XYZ integrability the easy way

Sutherland showed that the XYZ quantum spin-chain Hamiltonian commutes with the eight-vertex model transfer matrix, so that Baxter's subsequent tour de force proves the integrability of both. The proof requires parametrising the Boltzmann weights using elliptic theta functions and showing they satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation. We here give a simpler derivation of the integrability of the XYZ chain by explicitly constructing an extensive sequence of conserved charges from a matrix-product operator. We show that they commute with the XYZ Hamiltonian with periodic boundary conditions or an arbitrary boundary magnetic field. A straightforward generalisation yields impurity interactions that preserve the integrability. Placing such an impurity at the edge gives an integrable generalisation of the Kondo problem with a gapped bulk. We make contact with the traditional approach by relating our matrix-product operator to products of the eight-vertex model transfer matrix.

Perfect Particle Transmission through Duality Defects

We study wavepackets that propagate across (a) topological interfaces in quantum spin systems exhibiting non-invertible symmetries and (b) duality defects coupling dual theories. We demonstrate that the transmission is always perfect, and that a particle traversing the interface is converted into a nonlocal string-like excitation. We give a systematic way of constructing such a defect by identifying its Hilbert space with the virtual bond dimension of the matrix product operator representing defect lines. Our work both gives an operational meaning to topological interfaces, and provides a lattice analogue of recent results solving the monopole paradox in quantum field theory.

Generalizations of Kitaev's honeycomb model from braided fusion categories

Fusion surface models, as introduced by Inamura and Ohmori, extend the concept of anyon chains to 2+1 dimensions, taking fusion 2-categories as their input. In this work, we construct and analyze fusion surface models on the honeycomb lattice built from braided fusion 1-categories. These models preserve mutually commuting plaquette operators and anomalous 1-form symmetries. Their Hamiltonian is chosen to mimic the structure of Kitaev's honeycomb model, which is unitarily equivalent to the Ising fusion surface model. In the anisotropic limit, where one coupling constant is dominant, the fusion surface models reduce to Levin-Wen string-nets. In the isotropic limit, they are described by weakly coupled anyon chains and are likely to realize chiral topological order. We focus on three specific examples: (i) Kitaev's honeycomb model with a perturbation breaking time-reversal symmetry that realizes chiral Ising topological order, (ii) a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ generalization proposed by Barkeshli et al., which potentially realizes chiral parafermion topological order, and (iii) a novel Fibonacci honeycomb model featuring a non-invertible 1-form symmetry.

Pivoting through the chiral-clock family

The Onsager algebra, invented to solve the two-dimensional Ising model, can be used to construct conserved charges for a family of integrable $N$-state chiral clock models. We show how it naturally gives rise to a "pivot" procedure for this family of chiral Hamiltonians. These Hamiltonians have an anti-unitary CPT symmetry that when combined with the usual $\mathbb{Z}_N$ clock symmetry gives a non-abelian dihedral symmetry group $D_{2N}$. We show that this symmetry gives rise to symmetry-protected topological (SPT) order in this family for all even $N$, and representation-SPT (RSPT) physics for all odd $N$. The simplest such example is a next-nearest-neighbour chain generalising the spin-1/2 cluster model, an SPT phase of matter. We derive a matrix-product state representation of its fixed-point ground state along with the ensuing entanglement spectrum and symmetry fractionalisation. We analyse a rich phase diagram combining this model with the Onsager-integrable chiral Potts chain, and find trivial, symmetry-breaking and (R)SPT orders, as well as extended gapless regions. For odd $N$, the phase transitions are "unnecessarily" critical from the SPT point of view.

From the XXZ chain to the integrable Rydberg-blockade ladder via non-invertible duality defects

Strongly interacting models often possess "dualities" subtler than a one-to-one mapping of energy levels. The maps can be non-invertible, as apparent in the canonical example of Kramers and Wannier. We analyse an algebraic structure common to the XXZ spin chain and three other models: Rydberg-blockade bosons with one particle per square of a ladder, a three-state antiferromagnet, and two Ising chains coupled in a zigzag fashion. The structure yields non-invertible maps between the four models while also guaranteeing all are integrable. We construct these maps explicitly utilising topological defects coming from fusion categories and the lattice version of the orbifold construction, and use them to give explicit conformal-field-theory partition functions describing their critical regions. The Rydberg and Ising ladders also possess interesting non-invertible symmetries, with the spontaneous breaking of one in the former resulting in an unusual ground-state degeneracy.

Free fermions beyond Jordan and Wigner

The Jordan-Wigner transformation is frequently utilised to rewrite quantum spin chains in terms of fermionic operators. When the resulting Hamiltonian is bilinear in these fermions, i.e. the fermions are free, the exact spectrum follows from the eigenvalues of a matrix whose size grows only linearly with the volume of the system. However, several Hamiltonians that do not admit a Jordan-Wigner transformation to fermion bilinears still have the same type of free-fermion spectra. The spectra of such ``free fermions in disguise" models can be found exactly by an intricate but explicit construction of the raising and lowering operators. We generalise the methods further to find a family of such spin chains. We compute the exact spectrum, and generalise an elegant graph-theory construction. We also explain how this family admits an N=2 lattice supersymmetry.

Critical lines and ordered phases in a Rydberg-blockade ladder

Arrays of Rydberg atoms in the blockade regime realize a wealth of strongly correlated quantum physics, but theoretical analysis beyond the chain is rather difficult. Here we study a tractable model of Rydberg-blockade atoms on the square ladder with a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and at most one excited atom per square. We find $D_4$, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_3$ density-wave phases separated by critical and first-order quantum phase transitions. A non-invertible remnant of $U(1)$ symmetry applies to our full three-parameter space of couplings, and its presence results in a larger critical region as well as two distinct $\mathbb{Z}_3$-broken phases. Along an integrable line of couplings, the model exhibits a self-duality that is spontaneously broken along a first-order transition. Aided by numerical results, perturbation theory and conformal field theory, we also find critical Ising$^2$ and three-state Potts transitions, and provide good evidence that the latter can be chiral.

Stochastic strong zero modes and their dynamical manifestations

Strong zero modes (SZMs) are conserved operators localised at the edges of certain quantum spin chains, which give rise to long coherence times of edge spins. Here we define and analyse analogous operators in one-dimensional classical stochastic systems. For concreteness, we focus on chains with single occupancy and nearest-neighbour transitions, in particular particle hopping and pair creation and annihilation. For integrable choices of parameters we find the exact form of the SZM operators. Being in general non-diagonal in the classical basis, the dynamical consequences of stochastic SZMs are very different from those of their quantum counterparts. We show that the presence of a stochastic SZM is manifested through a class of exact relations between time-correlation functions, absent in the same system with periodic boundaries.

Microscopic characterization of Ising conformal field theory in Rydberg chains

Rydberg chains provide an appealing platform for probing conformal field theories (CFTs) that capture universal behavior in a myriad of physical settings. Focusing on a Rydberg chain at the Ising transition separating charge density wave and disordered phases, we establish a detailed link between microscopics and low-energy physics emerging at criticality. We first construct lattice incarnations of primary fields in the underlying Ising CFT including chiral fermions -- a nontrivial task given that the Rydberg chain Hamiltonian does not admit an exact fermionization. With this dictionary in hand, we compute correlations of microscopic Rydberg operators, paying special attention to finite, open chains of immediate experimental relevance. We further develop a method to quantify how second-neighbor Rydberg interactions tune the sign and strength of four-fermion couplings in the Ising CFT. Finally, we determine how the Ising fields evolve when four-fermion couplings drive an instability to Ising tricriticality. Our results pave the way to a thorough experimental characterization of Ising criticality in Rydberg arrays, and can inform the design of novel higher-dimensional phases based on coupled critical chains.

Self-dual $S_3$-invariant quantum chains

We investigate the self-dual three-state quantum chain with nearest-neighbor interactions and $S_3$, time-reversal, and parity symmetries. We find a rich phase diagram including gapped phases with order-disorder coexistence, integrable critical points with U(1) symmetry, and ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic critical regions described by three-state Potts and free-boson conformal field theories respectively. We also find an unusual critical phase which appears to be described by combining two conformal field theories with distinct "Fermi velocities". The order-disorder coexistence phase has an emergent fractional supersymmetry, and we find lattice analogs of its generators.

Topological Defects on the Lattice: Dualities and Degeneracies

We construct topological defects in two-dimensional classical lattice models and quantum chains. The defects satisfy local commutation relations guaranteeing that the partition function is independent of their path. These relations and their solutions are extended to allow defect lines to fuse, branch and satisfy all the properties of a fusion category. We show how the two-dimensional classical lattice models and their topological defects are naturally described by boundary conditions of a Turaev-Viro-Barrett-Westbury partition function. These defects allow Kramers-Wannier duality to be generalized to a large class of models, explaining exact degeneracies between non-symmetry-related ground states as well as in the low-energy spectrum. They give a precise and general notion of twisted boundary conditions and the universal behaviour under Dehn twists. Gluing a topological defect to a boundary yields linear identities between partition functions with different boundary conditions, allowing ratios of the universal g-factor to be computed exactly on the lattice. We develop this construction in detail in a variety of examples, including the Potts, parafermion and height models.

Large Classes of Quantum Scarred Hamiltonians from Matrix Product States

Motivated by the existence of exact many-body quantum scars in the AKLT chain, we explore the connection between Matrix Product State (MPS) wavefunctions and many-body quantum scarred Hamiltonians. We provide a method to systematically search for and construct parent Hamiltonians with towers of exact eigenstates composed of quasiparticles on top of an MPS wavefunction. These exact eigenstates have low entanglement in spite of being in the middle of the spectrum, thus violating the strong Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH). Using our approach, we recover the AKLT chain starting from the MPS of its ground state, and we derive the most general nearest-neighbor Hamiltonian that shares the AKLT quasiparticle tower of exact eigenstates. We further apply this formalism to other simple MPS wavefunctions, and derive new families of Hamiltonians that exhibit AKLT-like quantum scars. As a consequence, we also construct a scar-preserving deformation that connects the AKLT chain to the integrable spin-1 pure biquadratic model. Finally, we also derive other families of Hamiltonians that exhibit new types of exact quantum scars, including a $U(1)$-invariant perturbed Potts model.

Integrability and braided tensor categories

Many integrable statistical mechanical models possess a fractional-spin conserved current. Such currents have been constructed by utilising quantum-group algebras and ideas from "discrete holomorphicity". I find them naturally and much more generally using a braided tensor category, a topological structure arising in knot invariants, anyons and conformal field theory. I derive a simple constraint on the Boltzmann weights admitting a conserved current, generalising one found using quantum-group algebras. The resulting trigonometric weights are typically those of a critical integrable lattice model, so the method here gives a linear way of "Baxterising", i.e. building a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation out of topological data. It also illuminates why many models do not admit a solution. I discuss many examples in geometric and local models, including (perhaps) a new solution.

The "not-A", RSPT and Potts phases in an $S_3$-invariant chain

We analyse in depth an $S_3$-invariant nearest-neighbor quantum chain in the region of a U(1)-invariant self-dual multicritical point. We find four distinct proximate gapped phases. One has three-state Potts order, corresponding to topological order in a parafermionic formulation. Also nearby is a phase with "representation" symmetry-protected topological (RSPT) order. Its dual exhibits an unusual "not-A" order, where the spins prefer to align in two of the three directions. Within each of the four phases, we find a frustration-free point with exact ground state(s). The exact RSPT ground state is similar to that of Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki, whereas its dual states in the not-A phase are product states, each an equal-amplitude sum over all states where one of the three spin states on each site is absent. A field-theory analysis shows that all transitions are in the universality class of the critical three-state Potts model. They provide a lattice realization of a flow from a free-boson field theory to the Potts conformal field theory.

Onsager symmetries in $U(1)$-invariant clock models

We show how the Onsager algebra, used in the original solution of the two-dimensional Ising model, arises as an infinite-dimensional symmetry of certain self-dual models that also have a $U(1)$ symmetry. We describe in detail the example of nearest-neighbour $n$-state clock chains whose ${\mathbb Z}_n$ symmetry is enhanced to $U(1)$. As a consequence of the Onsager-algebra symmetry, the spectrum of these models possesses degeneracies with multiplicities $2^N$ for positive integer $N$. We construct the elements of the algebra explicitly from transfer matrices built from non-fundamental representations of the quantum-group algebra $U_q(sl_2)$. We analyse the spectra further by using both the coordinate Bethe ansatz and a functional approach, and show that the degeneracies result from special exact $n$-string solutions of the Bethe equations. We also find a family of commuting chiral Hamiltonians that break the degeneracies and allow an integrable interpolation between ferro- and antiferromagnets.
