Gauge symmetry and non-abelian topological sectors in a geometrically constrained model on the honeycomb lattice

We study a constrained statistical-mechanical model in two dimensions that has three useful descriptions. They are 1) the Ising model on the honeycomb lattice, constrained to have three up spins and three down spins on every hexagon, 2) the three-color/fully-packed-loop model on the links of the honeycomb lattice, with loops around a single hexagon forbidden, and 3) three Ising models on interleaved triangular lattices, with domain walls of the different Ising models not allowed to cross. Unlike the three-color model, the configuration space on the sphere or plane is connected under local moves. On higher-genus surfaces there are infinitely many dynamical sectors, labeled by a noncontractible set of nonintersecting loops. We demonstrate that at infinite temperature the transfer matrix admits an unusual structure related to a gauge symmetry for the same model on an anisotropic lattice. This enables us to diagonalize the original transfer matrix for up to 36 sites, finding an entropy per plaquette ~ 0.3661 and substantial evidence that the model is not critical. We also find the striking property that the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix on an anisotropic lattice are given in terms of Fibonacci numbers. We comment on the possibility of a topological phase, with infinite topological degeneracy, in an associated two-dimensional quantum model.

Loop models and their critical points

Loop models have been widely studied in physics and mathematics, in problems ranging from polymers to topological quantum computation to Schramm-Loewner evolution. I present new loop models which have critical points described by conformal field theories. Examples include both fully-packed and dilute loop models with critical points described by the superconformal minimal models and the SU(2)_2 WZW models. The dilute loop models are generalized to include SU(2)_k models as well.

Topological Entanglement Entropy from the Holographic Partition Function

We study the entropy of chiral 2+1-dimensional topological phases, where there are both gapped bulk excitations and gapless edge modes. We show how the entanglement entropy of both types of excitations can be encoded in a single partition function. This partition function is holographic because it can be expressed entirely in terms of the conformal field theory describing the edge modes. We give a general expression for the holographic partition function, and discuss several examples in depth, including abelian and non-abelian fractional quantum Hall states, and p+ip superconductors. We extend these results to include a point contact allowing tunneling between two points on the edge, which causes thermodynamic entropy associated with the point contact to be lost with decreasing temperature. Such a perturbation effectively breaks the system in two, and we can identify the thermodynamic entropy loss with the loss of the edge entanglement entropy. From these results, we obtain a simple interpretation of the non-integer `ground state degeneracy' which is obtained in 1+1-dimensional quantum impurity problems: its logarithm is a 2+1-dimensional topological entanglement entropy.

Edge states and tunneling of non-Abelian quasiparticles in the nu=5/2 quantum Hall state and p+ip superconductors

We study quasiparticle tunneling between the edges of a non-Abelian topological state. The simplest examples are a p+ip superconductor and the Moore-Read Pfaffian non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state; the latter state may have been observed at Landau-level filling fraction nu=5/2. Formulating the problem is conceptually and technically non-trivial: edge quasiparticle correlation functions are elements of a vector space, and transform into each other as the quasiparticle coordinates are braided. We show in general how to resolve this difficulty and uniquely define the quasiparticle tunneling Hamiltonian. The tunneling operators in the simplest examples can then be rewritten in terms of a free boson. One key consequence of this bosonization is an emergent spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We show that vortex tunneling across a p+ip superconductor is equivalent to the single-channel Kondo problem, while quasiparticle tunneling across the Moore-Read state is analogous to the two-channel Kondo effect. Temperature and voltage dependences of the tunneling conductivity are given in the low- and high-temperature limits.

Dynamical Disentanglement across a Point Contact in a Non-Abelian Quantum Hall State

We analyze tunneling of non-Abelian quasiparticles between the edges of a quantum Hall droplet at Landau level filling fraction nu=5/2, assuming that the electrons in the first excited Landau level organize themselves in the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state. We formulate a bosonized theory of the modes at the two edges of a Hall bar; an effective spin-1/2 degree of freedom emerges in the description of a point contact. We show how the crossover from the high-temperature regime of weak quasiparticle tunneling between the edges of the droplet, with 4-terminal R_{xx} scaling as T^{-3/2}, to the low-temperature limit, with R_{xx} - h/(10 e^2) scaling as -T^4, is closely related to the two-channel Kondo effect. We give a physical interpretation for the entropy of \ln(2\sqrt{2}) which is lost in the flow from the ultraviolet to the infrared.

Exact results for strongly-correlated fermions in 2+1 dimensions

We derive exact results for a model of strongly-interacting spinless fermions hopping on a two-dimensional lattice. By exploiting supersymmetry, we find the number and type of ground states exactly. Exploring various lattices and limits, we show how the ground states can be frustrated, quantum critical, or combine frustration with a Wigner crystal. We show that on generic lattices, the model is in an exotic ``super-frustrated'' state characterized by an extensive ground-state entropy.

Realizing non-Abelian statistics

We construct a series of 2+1-dimensional models whose quasiparticles obey non-Abelian statistics. The adiabatic transport of quasiparticles is described by using a correspondence between the braid matrix of the particles and the scattering matrix of 1+1-dimensional field theories. We discuss in depth lattice and continuum models whose braiding is that of SO(3) Chern-Simons gauge theory, including the simplest type of non-Abelian statistics, involving just one type of quasiparticle. The ground-state wave function of an SO(3) model is related to a loop description of the classical two-dimensional Potts model. We discuss the transition from a topological phase to a conventionally-ordered phase, showing in some cases there is a quantum critical point.

Hard squares with negative activity

We show that the hard-square lattice gas with activity z= -1 has a number of remarkable properties. We conjecture that all the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are roots of unity. They fall into groups (``strings'') evenly spaced around the unit circle, which have interesting number-theoretic properties. For example, the partition function on an M by N lattice with periodic boundary condition is identically 1 when M and N are coprime. We provide evidence for these conjectures from analytical and numerical arguments.

Non-local space-time supersymmetry on the lattice

We show that several well-known one-dimensional quantum systems possess a hidden nonlocal supersymmetry. The simplest example is the open XXZ spin chain with Δ=-1/2. We use the supersymmetry to place lower bounds on the ground state energy with various boundary conditions. For an odd number of sites in the periodic chain, and with a particular boundary magnetic field in the open chain, we can derive the ground state energy exactly. The supersymmetry thus explains why it is possible to solve the Bethe equations for the ground state in these cases. We also show that a similar space-time supersymmetry holds for the t-J model at its integrable ferromagnetic point, where the space-time supersymmetry and the Hamiltonian it yields coexist with a global u(1|2) graded Lie algebra symmetry. Possible generalizations to other algebras are discussed.

Strings on type IIB pp-wave backgrounds with interacting massive theories on the worldsheet

We consider superstring theories on pp-wave backgrounds which result in an integrable ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theory on the worldsheet. We obtain exact eigenvalues of the light-cone gauge superstring hamiltonian in the massive and interacting world-sheet theory with superpotential $Z^3-Z$. We find the modes of the supergravity part of the string spectrum, and their space-time interpretation. Because the system is effectively at strong coupling on the worldsheet, these modes are not in one-to-one correspondence with the usual type IIB supergravity modes in the $p_{-} \to 0$ limit. However, the above correspondence holds in the $α'\to 0$ limit.

Topological Order and Conformal Quantum Critical Points

We discuss a certain class of two-dimensional quantum systems which exhibit conventional order and topological order, as well as two-dimensional quantum critical points separating these phases. All of the ground-state equal-time correlators of these theories are equal to correlation functions of a local two-dimensional classical model. The critical points therefore exhibit a time-independent form of conformal invariance. These theories characterize the universality classes of two-dimensional quantum dimer models and of quantum generalizations of the eight-vertex model, as well as Z_2 and non-abelian gauge theories. The conformal quantum critical points are relatives of the Lifshitz points of three-dimensional anisotropic classical systems such as smectic liquid crystals. In particular, the ground-state wave functional of these quantum Lifshitz points is just the statistical (Gibbs) weight of the ordinary 2D free boson, the 2D Gaussian model. The full phase diagram for the quantum eight-vertex model exhibits quantum critical lines with continuously-varying critical exponents separating phases with long-range order from a Z_2 deconfined topologically-ordered liquid phase. We show how similar ideas also apply to a well-known field theory with non-abelian symmetry, the strong-coupling limit of 2+1-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theory with a Chern-Simons term. The ground state of this theory is relevant for recent theories of topological quantum computation.

Lattice fermion models with supersymmetry

We investigate a family of lattice models with manifest N=2 supersymmetry. The models describe fermions on a 1D lattice, subject to the constraint that no more than k consecutive lattice sites may be occupied. We discuss the special properties arising from the supersymmetry, and present Bethe ansatz solutions of the simplest models. We display the connections of the k=1 model with the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ chain at Δ=-1/2, and the k=2 model with both the su(2|1)-symmetric tJ model in the ferromagnetic regime and the integrable spin-1 XXZ chain at Δ=-1/\sqrt{2}. We argue that these models include critical points described by the superconformal minimal models.

Competing density-wave orders in a one-dimensional hard-boson model

We describe the zero-temperature phase diagram of a model of bosons, occupying sites of a linear chain, which obey a hard-exclusion constraint: any two nearest-neighbor sites may have at most one boson. A special case of our model was recently proposed as a description of a ``tilted'' Mott insulator of atoms trapped in an optical lattice. Our quantum Hamiltonian is shown to generate the transfer matrix of Baxter's hard-square model. Aided by exact solutions of a number of special cases, and by numerical studies, we obtain a phase diagram containing states with long-range density-wave order with period 2 and period 3, and also a floating incommensurate phase. Critical theories for the various quantum phase transitions are presented. As a byproduct, we show how to compute the Luttinger parameter in integrable theories with hard-exclusion constraints.

Haldane-Gapped Spin Chains as Luttinger Liquids: Correlation Functions at Finite Field

We study the behavior of Heisenberg, antiferromagnetic, integer-spin chains in the presence of a magnetic field exceeding the attendant spin gap. For temperatures much smaller than the gap, the spin chains exhibit Luttinger liquid behavior. We compute exactly both the corresponding Luttinger parameter and the Fermi velocity as a function of magnetic field. This enables the computation of a number of correlators from which we derive the spin conductance, the expected form of the dynamic structure factor relevant to inelastic neutron scattering experiments, and NMR relaxation rates. We also comment upon the robustness of the magnetically induced gapless phase both to finite temperature and finite couplings between neighbouring chains.

Lattice Models with N=2 Supersymmetry

We introduce lattice models with explicit N=2 supersymmetry. In these interacting models, the supersymmetry generators Q^+ and Q^- yield the Hamiltonian H={Q^+,Q^-} on any graph. The degrees of freedom can be described as either fermions with hard cores, or as quantum dimers. The Hamiltonian of our simplest model contains a hopping term and a repulsive potential, as well as the hard-core repulsion. We discuss these models from a variety of perspectives: using a fundamental relation with conformal field theory, via the Bethe ansatz, and using cohomology methods. The simplest model provides a manifestly-supersymmetric lattice regulator for the supersymmetric point of the massless 1+1-dimensional Thirring (Luttinger) model. We discuss the ground-state structure of this same model on more complicated graphs, including a 2-leg ladder, and discuss some generalizations.

BPS and non-BPS states in a supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theory

We analyze the spectrum of the N=(2,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theory in two dimensions with superpotential W=X^{n+2}-lambda X^2. We find the full BPS spectrum of this theory by exploiting the direct connection between the UV and IR limits of the theory. The computation utilizes results from the Picard-Lefschetz theory of singularities and its extension to boundary singularities. The additional fact that this theory is integrable requires that the BPS states do not close under scattering. This observation fixes the masses of non-BPS states as well.

Exact S-matrices for supersymmetric sigma models and the Potts model

We study the algebraic formulation of exact factorizable S-matrices for integrable two-dimensional field theories. We show that different formulations of the S-matrices for the Potts field theory are essentially equivalent, in the sense that they can be expressed in the same way as elements of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, in various representations. This enables us to construct the S-matrices for certain nonlinear sigma models that are invariant under the Lie ``supersymmetry'' algebras sl(m+n|n) (m=1,2; n>0), both for the bulk and for the boundary, simply by using another representation of the same algebra. These S-matrices represent the perturbation of the conformal theory at theta=pi by a small change in the topological angle theta. The m=1, n=1 theory has applications to the spin quantum Hall transition in disordered fermion systems. We also find S-matrices describing the flow from weak to strong coupling, both for theta=0 and theta=pi, in certain other supersymmetric sigma models.

Phase transitions in one dimension and less

Phase transitions can occur in one-dimensional classical statistical mechanics at non-zero temperature when the number of components N of the spin is infinite. We show how to solve such magnets in one dimension for any N, and how the phase transition develops at N = infinity. We discuss SU(N) and Sp(N) magnets, where the transition is second-order. In the new high-temperature phase, the correlation length is zero. We also show that for the SU(N) magnet on exactly three sites with periodic boundary conditions, the transition becomes first order.
