Rescattering Effects on DIS Parton Distributions

Rescattering of the struck quark in Deep Inelastic Scattering implies that measured parton distributions are not directly related to the Fock state probabilities of the target wave function. The production amplitudes acquire dynamical phases, which gives rise to shadowing and diffraction in DIS.

The Unexpected Role of Final State Interactions in Deep Inelastic Scattering

Rescattering of the struck quark in Deep Inelastic Scattering implies that measured parton distributions are not directly related to the Fock state probabilities of the target wave function. The production amplitudes acquire dynamical phases, which gives rise to shadowing and diffraction in DIS. I review the kinematics and dynamics of DIS as seen in various frames and gauges.

Filling Perturbative Ground States

I discuss a degree of freedom in formulating perturbation theory that is often neglected: the in- and out-states need not be empty. The inclusion of (free) particles in the asymptotic states modifies the on-shell prescription of the free propagator. This affects loop contributions -- but the modified expansion is {\it a priori} as justified as the standard one with Feynman prescription. It is possible to dress the quark propagator to all orders with zero-momentum gluons from the perturbative ground state. The dressed quark has no pole and thus cannot appear as an external particle in the S-matrix. Chiral symmetry may be spontaneously broken, but Lorentz and gauge symmetry is exact. Adding loop corrections to this ``dressed tree approximation'' gives a formally exact PQCD expansion.

Dressing the Quark with QCD Condensates

A condensate of $\pvec = 0$ partons in the perturbative vacuum gives rise to a term $\proptoδ^4(p)$ in the free PQCD propagators. The leading condensate contribution to the quark propagator can be exactly summed since there is a factor $δ^4(p)$ associated to each loop. We calculate the dressed quark propagator in the presence of either a gluon or a quark condensate, for a number of colors $N \to \infty$. The dressed quark propagator satisfies a Dyson-Schwinger type equation which can be exactly solved within our framework. In the case of a gluon condensate the dressed quark propagator has no pole, hence quarks cannot appear in asymptotic states, and moreover the DS equation has a solution which spontaneously breaks chiral symmetry. We also calculate the dressed quark-photon vertex and verify that the corresponding Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied, and that the dressed self-energy correction to the photon propagator does not shift the physical photon pole.

Perturbative QCD with Quark and Gluon Condensates

The quark <\barψψ> and gluon vacuum expectation values are non-vanishing at low orders in α_s when the perturbative ground state includes quark and gluon pairs. This offers possibilities of studying the effects of a non-trivial vacuum using formally exact perturbative methods. The QCD Feynman rules are modified only for the free, on-shell quark and gluon propagators at zero four-momentum. Gauge and lorentz invariance is maintained, while chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken by the ground state.

Structure Functions are not Parton Probabilities

Parton distributions given by deep inelastic lepton scattering (DIS) are not equal to the probabilities of finding those partons in the parent wave function. Soft rescattering of the struck parton within the coherence length of the hard process influences the DIS cross section and gives dynamical phases to the scattering amplitudes. This gives rise to diffractive DIS, shadowing in nuclear targets and transverse spin asymmetry.

Duality in Semi-Exclusive Processes

Bloom-Gilman duality relates parton distributions to nucleon form factors and thus constrains the dynamics of exclusive processes. The quark electric charge dependence implies that exclusive scattering is incoherent on the quarks even at high momentum transfers. Data on semi-exclusive meson production exceeds the duality prediction by more than an order of magnitude and violates quark helicity conservation. This suggests that the subprocess is dominated by soft `endpoint' contributions which obey dimensional scaling. The large transverse size of the subprocess may explain the absence of color transparency in fixed angle processes.

Probing QCD at Medium Q^2

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is a firmly established part of the Standard Model, yet its long distance properties remain challenging at a conceptual level. In recent years significant experimental and theoretical progress has been made towards a field theoretic understanding of hadrons as QCD bound states, addressing the complex properties of relativistic bound states in a gluon condensate with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. In this introductory talk I give a personal view of some of the issues involved: Measuring hadron matrix elements, understanding their QCD dynamics and explaining the apparently close relationship between hard and soft processes.

Perturbative QCD with Quark and Gluon Condensates

QCD perturbation theory using quark and gluon propagators that have an extra term at zero four-momentum is equivalent to standard PQCD in the presence of massless quark and gluon pairs in the perturbative vacuum. We verify at low orders in perturbation theory that $<\barψψ> \neq 0$ and that quarks acquire a constituent mass. Thus chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, and the conservation of the axial vector current ensures a massless pion. The gluon pairs generate an $ $ expectation value and a tachyonic gluon mass. Lorentz and gauge symmetry is preserved, and the short-distance structure of PQCD is unaffected. The modified perturbative expansion thus contains relevant elements of QCD at both short and long distances.

Structure Functions are not Parton Probabilities

The common view that structure functions measured in deep inelastic lepton scattering are determined by the probability of finding quarks and gluons in the target is not correct in gauge theory. We show that gluon exchange between the fast, outgoing partons and target spectators, which is usually assumed to be an irrelevant gauge artifact, affects the leading twist structure functions in a profound way. This observation removes the apparent contradiction between the projectile (eikonal) and target (parton model) views of diffractive and small x_{Bjorken} phenomena. The diffractive scattering of the fast outgoing quarks on spectators in the target causes shadowing in the DIS cross section. Thus the depletion of the nuclear structure functions is not intrinsic to the wave function of the nucleus, but is a coherent effect arising from the destructive interference of diffractive channels induced by final state interactions. This is consistent with the Glauber-Gribov interpretation of shadowing as a rescattering effect.

Duality in Semi-Exclusive Processes

Semi-exclusive processes like γp \to π^+ Y are closely analogous to DIS, ep \to eX, in the limit where the momentum transfer |t| to the pion and the mass of the inclusive system Y are large but still much smaller than the total CM energy. We apply Bloom-Gilman duality to this semi-exclusive process. The energy dependence of the γp \to π^+ n cross section given by semi-local duality agrees with data for moderate values of |t|, but its normalization is underestimated by about two orders of magnitude. This indicates that rather high momentum transfers are required for the validity of PQCD in the hard subprocess γu \to π^+ d. In the case of Compton scattering γp \to γp the analogous discrepancy is about one order of magnitude. In electroproduction the virtuality of the incoming photon can be used to directly measure the hardness of the subprocess.

The static PQCD potential with modified boundary conditions

We calculate the potential between two static quarks in QCD using modified boundary conditions for the perturbative expansion. Through a change of the Feynman iepsilon prescription we effectively add a "sea" of gluons to the asymptotic states with energies below a given scale Lambda. We find that the standard result for the static potential gets corrections of order Lambda^2/Q^2 both at small and large momentum transfers Q^2. After resummation of the infrared sensitive corrections we find that the running coupling alpha_s(Q^2) freezes in the infrared and that the exchanged gluon gets an effective tachyonic mass. We verify that identical results are obtained in the Coulomb and Feynman gauges.

Semi-Exclusive Production of Photons at HERA

We study the feasibility of measuring semi-exclusive photon production γ+ p \to γ+ Y at HERA. The cross section of photons produced at large transverse momenta, recoiling off an inclusive system Y of limited mass, can without photon isolation cuts be simply expressed in terms of hard pQCD subprocesses and standard target parton distributions. With the help of event generators we identify the kinematic region where quark and gluon fragmentation processes can be neglected. The cross section in this semi-exclusive region is large enough to be measured with an upgraded HERA luminosity of L = 100/pb. The subprocesses of lowest order in α_s are suppressed at low recoil masses M_Y, compared to higher order gluon exchange, i.e. BFKL contributions. The distinct M_Y-dependence makes it possible to determine experimentally the kinematic range where the higher order processes dominate.

Quarkonium Production through Hard Comover Scattering. II

We extend to large transverse momentum pt an approach to quarkonium hadroproduction previously suggested for low pt. The dynamics involves a perturbative rescattering of the heavy quark pair off a comoving color field which originates from gluon radiation prior to the heavy quark production vertex. Assuming simple properties of the comoving field we find the rescattering scenario to be in reasonable agreement with data. At large pt, psi' is predicted to be unpolarized, and chi1 production is favoured compared to chi2. We predict the chi1 polarization to be transverse at low pt, and to get a longitudinal component at large pt.

ELFE Physics

This is an introductory review of central topics in hadron physics that are addressed by high intensity, continuous electron beam facilities in the multi-GeV range. Exclusive processes are a crucial tool for increasing our knowledge of hadron wave functions beyond what can be learned from studies of hard inclusive processes. Data shows precocious scaling, suggesting a simple underlying picture. Important conceptual advances in the application of PQCD is being made.

Psi' to J/Psi Ratio in Diffractive Photoproduction

We evaluate the Psi' to J/Psi ratio in diffractive photoproduction in a light-cone framework, using charmonium wave functions extracted from non-relativistic potential models. Contrary to current belief, we find that the best estimate for the ratio is a factor 2 to 5 below the data. The measured ratio constrains the distribution of the charm quark-antiquark component of the charmonium light-cone wave function and indicates that it is more compact than in potential models. We predict that the inelastic photoproduction ratio will be bigger than the elastic one, and will equal that measured in hadroproduction.

Soft Perturbative QCD

There are indications of a faith transition in QCD: The strong coupling may freeze at a sufficiently low value to make PQCD relevant even in the confining regime. The properties of PQCD at low Q^2 depend on the asymptotic field configuration assumed at t=\pm\infty. A change in the iεprescription of the free propagators is equivalent to including quarks and gluons in the initial and final states. Perturbative expansions thus generated are formally as justified as standard PQCD and may turn out to be phenomenologically relevant. I discuss examples of the effects of such propagator modifications in QED and QCD.

Quarkonium Production through Hard Comover Scattering

We propose a qualitatively new mechanism for quarkonium production, motivated by the global features of the experimental data and by the successes/failures of existing models. In QCD, heavy quarks are created in conjunction with a bremsstrahlung color field emitted by the colliding partons. We study the effects of perturbative gluon exchange between the quark pair and a comoving color field. Such scattering can flip the spin and color of the quarks to create a non-vanishing overlap with the wave function of physical quarkonium. Several observed features that are difficult to understand in current models find simple explanations. Transverse gluon exchange produces unpolarized J/psi's, the chi_c1 and chi_c2 states are produced at similar rates, and the anomalous dependence of the J/psi cross section on the nuclear target size can be qualitatively understood.
