Sensitivity of the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy to Initial Conditions in Quintessence Cosmology

We analyze the evolution of energy density fluctuations in cosmological scenarios with a mixture of cold dark matter and quintessence, in which the quintessence field is modeled by a constant equation of state. We obtain analytic expressions for the time evolution of the quintessence perturbations in models with light fields. The fluctuations behave analogously to a driven harmonic oscillator, where the driving term arises from the inhomogeneities in the surrounding cosmological fluid. We demonstrate that the homogeneous solution, determined by the initial conditions, is completely sub-dominant to the inhomogeneous solution for physically realistic scenarios. Thus we show that the cosmic microwave background anisotropy predicted for such models is highly insensitive to the initial conditions in the quintessence field.

The Cyclic Universe: An Informal Introduction

The Cyclic Model is a radical, new cosmological scenario which proposes that the Universe undergoes an endless sequence of epochs which begin with a `big bang' and end in a `big crunch.' When the Universe bounces from contraction to re-expansion, the temperature and density remain finite. The model does not include a period of rapid inflation, yet it reproduces all of the successful predictions of standard big bang and inflationary cosmology. We point out numerous novel elements that have not been used previously which may open the door to further alternative cosmologies. Although the model is motivated by M-theory, branes and extra-dimensions, here we show that the scenario can be described almost entirely in terms of conventional 4d field theory and 4d cosmology.

Cosmic Evolution in a Cyclic Universe

Based on concepts drawn from the ekpyrotic scenario and M-theory, we elaborate our recent proposal of a cyclic model of the Universe. In this model, the Universe undergoes an endless sequence of cosmic epochs which begin with the Universe expanding from a `big bang' and end with the Universe contracting to a `big crunch.' Matching from `big crunch' to `big bang' is performed according to the prescription recently proposed with Khoury, Ovrut and Seiberg. The expansion part of the cycle includes a period of radiation and matter domination followed by an extended period of cosmic acceleration at low energies. The cosmic acceleration is crucial in establishing the flat and vacuous initial conditions required for ekpyrosis and for removing the entropy, black holes, and other debris produced in the preceding cycle. By restoring the Universe to the same vacuum state before each big crunch, the acceleration insures that the cycle can repeat and that the cyclic solution is an attractor.

Density Perturbations in the Ekpyrotic Scenario

We study the generation of density perturbations in the ekpyrotic scenario for the early universe, including gravitational backreaction. We expose interesting subtleties that apply to both inflationary and ekpyrotic models. Our analysis includes a detailed proposal of how the perturbations generated in a contracting phase may be matched across a `bounce' to those in an expanding hot big bang phase. For the physical conditions relevant to the ekpyrotic scenario, we re-obtain our earlier result of a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of energy density perturbations. We find that the perturbation amplitude is typically small, as desired to match observation.

From Big Crunch to Big Bang

We consider conditions under which a universe contracting towards a big crunch can make a transition to an expanding big bang universe. A promising example is 11-dimensional M-theory in which the eleventh dimension collapses, bounces, and re-expands. At the bounce, the model can reduce to a weakly coupled heterotic string theory and, we conjecture, it may be possible to follow the transition from contraction to expansion. The possibility opens the door to new classes of cosmological models. For example, we discuss how it suggests a major simplification and modification of the recently proposed ekpyrotic scenario.

Measuring the Equation-of-state of the Universe: Pitfalls and Prospects

We explore various pitfalls and challenges in determining the equation-of-state (w) of dark energy component that dominates the universe and causes the current accelerated expansion. We demonstrated in an earlier paper the existence of a degeneracy that makes it impossible to resolve well the value of w or its time-derivative with supernovae data. Here we consider standard practices, such as assuming priors that w is constant or greater than -1, and show that they also can lead to gross errors in estimating the true equation-of-state. We further consider combining measurements of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy and the Alcock-Paczynski test with supernovae data and find that the improvement in resolving the time-derivative of w is marginal, although the combination can constrain its present value perhaps to 20 percent uncertainty.

Measuring the Speed of Sound of Quintessence

Quintessence, a time-varying energy component that may account for the accelerated expansion of the universe, can be characterized by its equation of state and sound speed. In this paper, we show that if the quintessence density is at least one percent of the critical density at the surface of last scattering the cosmic microwave background anisotropy can distinguish between models whose sound speed is near the speed of light versus near zero, which could be useful in distinguishing competing candidates for dark energy.

Identifying and Indexing Icosahedral Quasicrystals from Powder Diffraction Patterns

We present a scheme to identify quasicrystals based on powder diffraction data and to provide a standardized indexing. We apply our scheme to a large catalog of powder diffraction patterns, including natural minerals, to look for new quasicrystals. Based on our tests, we have found promising candidates worthy of further exploration.

The Ekpyrotic Universe: Colliding Branes and the Origin of the Hot Big Bang

We propose a cosmological scenario in which the hot big bang universe is produced by the collision of a brane in the bulk space with a bounding orbifold plane, beginning from an otherwise cold, vacuous, static universe. The model addresses the cosmological horizon, flatness and monopole problems and generates a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of density perturbations without invoking superluminal expansion (inflation). The scenario relies, instead, on physical phenomena that arise naturally in theories based on extra dimensions and branes. As an example, we present our scenario predominantly within the context of heterotic M-theory. A prediction that distinguishes this scenario from standard inflationary cosmology is a strongly blue gravitational wave spectrum, which has consequences for microwave background polarization experiments and gravitational wave detectors.

Q-ball candidates for self-interacting dark matter

We show that non-topological solitons, known as Q-balls, are promising candidates for self-interacting dark matter. They can satisfy the cross-section requirements for a broad range of masses. Unlike previously considered examples, Q-balls can stick together after collision, reducing the effective self-interaction rate to a negligible value after a few collisions per particle. This feature modifies predictions for halo formation. We also discuss the possibility that Q-balls have large interaction cross-sections with ordinary matter.

Cracking Open the Window for Strongly Interacting Massive Particles as the Halo Dark Matter

In the early 1990's, an analysis was completed by several theorists of the available mass/cross-section parameter space for unusual particle candidates to solve the dark matter problem, e.g. strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs). This analysis found several unconstrained windows, such that for SIMP masses and cross-sections within these windows, SIMPs could still be the dominant dark matter in our Galactic halo. Since the early 1990's, some of these windows have been narrowed or closed, and some of these windows have been widened further by more careful analysis. We summarize the present state of the SIMP parameter space, and point to the cosmological salience of SIMPs as dark matter, given some of the present inadequacies of the WIMP solution to the dark matter problem.

A Brief Comment on "The Pyrotechnic Universe"

We respond to the criticisms by Kallosh, Kofman and Linde concerning our proposal of the ekpyrotic universe scenario. We point out a number of errors in their considerations and argue that, at this stage, the ekpyrotic model is a possible alternative to inflationary cosmology as a description of the very early universe.

Visible Branes with Negative Tension in Heterotic M-Theory

It is shown that there exist large classes of BPS vacua in heterotic M-theory which have negative tension on the visible orbifold plane, positive tension on the hidden plane and positive tension, physical five-branes in the bulk space. Explicit examples of such vacua are presented. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the ratio, beta/|alpha|, of the bulk five-brane tension to the visible plane tension can, for several large classes of such vacua, be made arbitrarily small. Hence, it is straightforward to find vacua with the properties required in the examples of the Ekpyrotic theory of cosmology - a visible brane with negative tension and beta/|alpha| small. This contradicts recent claims in the literature.

Limitations in using luminosity distance to determine the equation of state of the universe

Supernova searches have been been suggested as a method for determining precisely the current value and time variation of the equation of state, $w$, of the dark energy component responsible for the accelerated expansion of the Universe. We show that the method is fundamentally limited by the fact that luminosity dista nce depends on $w$ through a multiple integral relation that smears out information about $w$ and its time variatio n. The effect degrades the resolution of $w$ that can be obtained from current d ata.

Self-Interacting Dark Matter

Spergel and Steinhardt have recently proposed the concept of dark matter with strong self-interactions as a means to address numerous discrepancies between observations of dark matter halos on subgalactic scales and the predictions of the standard collisionless dark matter picture. We review the motivations for this scenario and discuss some recent, successful numerical tests. We also discuss the possibility that the dark matter interacts strongly with ordinary baryonic matter, as well as with itself. We present a new analysis of the experimental constraints and re-evaluate the allowed range of cross-section and mass.

Essentials of k-essence

We recently introduced the concept of "k-essence" as a dynamical solution for explaining naturally why the universe has entered an epoch of accelerated expansion at a late stage of its evolution. The solution avoids fine-tuning of parameters and anthropic arguments. Instead, k-essence is based on the idea of a dynamical attractor solution which causes it to act as a cosmological constant only at the onset of matter-domination. Consequently, k-essence overtakes the matter density and induces cosmic acceleration at about the present epoch. In this paper, we present the basic theory of k-essence and dynamical attractors based on evolving scalar fields with non-linear kinetic energy terms in the action. We present guidelines for constructing concrete examples and show that there are two classes of solutions, one in which cosmic acceleration continues forever and one in which the acceleration has finite duration.

Halo Properties in Cosmological Simulations of Self-Interacting Cold Dark Matter

We present a comparison of halo properties in cosmological simulations of collisionless cold dark matter (CDM) and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) for a range of dark matter cross sections. We find, in agreement with various authors, that CDM yields cuspy halos that are too centrally concentrated as compared to observations. Conversely, SIDM simulations using a Monte Carlo N-body technique produce halos with significantly reduced central densities and flatter cores with increasing cross section. We introduce a concentration parameter based on enclosed mass that we expect will be straightforward to determine observationally, unlike that of Navarro, Frenk & White, and provide predictions for SIDM and CDM. SIDM also produces more spherical halos than CDM, providing possibly the strongest observational test of SIDM. We discuss our findings in relation to various relevant observations as well as SIDM simulations of other groups. Taking proper account of simulation limitations, we find that a dark matter cross section per unit mass of sigma_DM ~= 10^{-23}-10^{-24} cm^2/GeV is consistent with all current observational constraints.

Inflationary solutions in the brane-world and their geometrical interpretation

We consider the cosmology of a pair of domain walls bounding a five-dimensional bulk space-time with negative cosmological constant, in which the distance between the branes is not fixed in time. Although there are strong arguments to suggest that this distance should be stabilized in the present epoch, no such constraints exist for the early universe and thus non-static solutions might provide relevant inflationary scenarios. We find the general solution for the standard ansatz where the bulk is foliated by planar-symmetric hypersurfaces. We show that in all cases the bulk geometry is that of anti-de Sitter (AdS_5). We then present a geometrical interpretation for the solutions as embeddings of two de Sitter (dS_4) surfaces in AdS_5, which provide a simple interpretation of the physical properties of the solutions. A notable feature explained in the analysis is that two-way communication between branes expanding away from one another is possible for a finite amount of time, after which communication can proceed in one direction only. The geometrical picture also shows that our class of solutions (and related solutions in the literature) are not completely general, contrary to some claims. We then derive the most general solution for two walls in AdS_5. This includes novel cosmologies where the brane tensions are not constrained to have opposite signs. The construction naturally generalizes to arbitrary FRW cosmologies on the branes.
