Abelian and Non-abelian D-brane Effective Actions

In this Ph.D. thesis we review and elaborate on a method to find the D-brane effective action, based on BPS equations. Firstly, both for the Yang-Mills action and the Born-Infeld action it is shown that these configurations are indeed BPS, i.e. solutions to these equations saturate a Bogomolny bound and leave some supersymmetry unbroken. Next, we use the BPS equations as a tool to construct the D-brane effective action and require that (a deformation of) these equations should still imply the equations of motion in more general cases. In the abelian case we managed to calculate all order in $α'$ four-derivative corrections to the effective action and the BPS equations while in the non-abelian case we obtained the effective action up to order $α'^4$. Furthermore, we discuss a check based on the spectrum of strings stretching between intersecting branes. Finally, this Ph.D. thesis also discusses the construction of a boundary superspace which is the first step to use the method of Weyl invariance in N=2 superspace in order to again construct the D-brane effective action. A more detailed summary of each chapter can be found in the introduction.

All homogeneous N=2 M-theory truncations with supersymmetric AdS4 vacua

We study consistent truncations of M-theory to gauged N=2 supergravity in four dimensions, based on a large class of SU(3)-structures in seven dimensions. We show that the gauging involves isometries of the vector multiplet scalar manifold as well as the Heisenberg algebra and a special isometry of the hyperscalar manifold. As a result, non-abelian gauge groups and new non-trivial scalar potentials are generated. Then we specialize to all homogeneous SU(3)-structures supporting supersymmetric AdS4 vacua. These are the Stiefel manifold V52, the Aloff-Wallach spaces N(k,l), the seven-sphere (seen as SU(4)/SU(3) or Sp(2)/Sp(1)) and the M110 and Q111 coset spaces. For each of these cases, we describe in detail the N=2 model and discuss its peculiarities.

Tri-Sasakian consistent reduction

We establish a universal consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation of M-theory based on seven-dimensional tri-Sasakian structure. The four-dimensional truncated theory is an N=4 gauged supergravity with three vector multiplets and a non-abelian gauge group, containing the compact factor SO(3). Consistency follows from the fact that our truncation takes exactly the same form as a left-invariant reduction on a specific coset manifold, and we show that the same holds for the various universal consistent truncations recently put forward in the literature. We describe how the global symmetry group SL(2,R) x SO(6,3) is embedded in the symmetry group E7(7) of maximally supersymmetric reductions, and make the connection with the approach of Exceptional Generalized Geometry. Vacuum AdS4 solutions spontaneously break the amount of supersymmetry from N=4 to N=3,1 or 0, and the spectrum contains massive modes. We find a subtruncation to minimal N=3 gauged supergravity as well as an N=1 subtruncation to the SO(3)-invariant sector. We also show that a reduction on the homogeneous space N^{010} enhances the universal tri-Sasakian truncation with a Betti vector multiplet.

De Sitter hunting in a classical landscape

We elaborate on the construction of de Sitter solutions from IIA orientifolds of SU(3)-structure manifolds that solve the 10-dimensional equations of motion at tree-level in the approximation of smeared sources. First we classify geometries that are orbifolds of a group manifold covering space which, upon the proper inclusion of O6 planes, can be described within the framework of N=1 supergravity in 4D. Then we scan systematically for de Sitter solutions, obtained as critical points of an effective 4D potential. Apart from finding many new solutions we emphasize the challenges in constructing explicit classical de Sitter vacua, which have sofar not been met. These challenges are interesting avenues for further research and include finding solutions that are perturbatively stable, satisfy charge and flux quantization, and have genuine localized (versus smeared) orientifold sources. This paper intends to be self-contained and pedagogical, and thus can serve as a guide to the necessary technical tools required for this line of research. In an appendix we explain how to study flux and charge quantization in the presence of a non-trivial H-field using twisted homology.

Lectures on Generalized Complex Geometry for Physicists

In these lectures we review Generalized Complex Geometry and discuss two main applications to string theory: the description of supersymmetric flux compactifications and the supersymmetric embedding of D-branes. We start by reviewing G-structures, and in particular SU(3)-structure and its torsion classes, before extending to Generalized Complex Geometry. We then discuss the supersymmetry conditions of type II supergravity in terms of differential conditions on pure spinors, and finally introduce generalized calibrations to describe D-branes. As examples we discuss in some detail AdS4 compactifications, which play a role as the geometric duals in the AdS4/CFT3-correspondence.

A landscape of non-supersymmetric AdS vacua on coset manifolds

We construct new families of non-supersymmetric sourceless type IIA AdS4 vacua on those coset manifolds that also admit supersymmetric solutions. We investigate the spectrum of left-invariant modes and find that most, but not all, of the vacua are stable under these fluctuations. Generically, there are also no massless moduli.

Universal de Sitter solutions at tree-level

Type IIA string theory compactified on SU(3)-structure manifolds with orientifolds allows for classical de Sitter solutions in four dimensions. In this paper we investigate these solutions from a ten-dimensional point of view. In particular, we demonstrate that there exists an attractive class of de Sitter solutions, whose geometry, fluxes and source terms can be entirely written in terms of the universal forms that are defined on all SU(3)-structure manifolds. These are the forms J and Omega, defining the SU(3)-structure itself, and the torsion classes. The existence of such universal de Sitter solutions is governed by easy-to-verify conditions on the SU(3)-structure, rendering the problem of finding dS solutions purely geometrical. We point out that the known (unstable) solution coming from the compactification on SU(2)x SU(2) is of this kind.

Coisotropic D-branes on AdS4 x CP3 and massive deformations

We scan for massive type IIA SU(3)-structure compactifications of the type AdS4 x CP3 with internal symmetry group SO(4). This group acts on CP3 with cohomogeneity one, so that one would expect new non-homogeneous solutions. We find however that all such solutions enhance their symmetry group to Sp(2) and form, in fact, the homogeneous family first described in arXiv:0712.1396. This is in accordance with arXiv:0901.0969, which argues from the CFT-side that although new vacua with SO(4) symmetry group and N=2 supersymmetry should exist, they fall outside our ansatz of strict SU(3)-structure, and instead have genuine SU(3)x SU(3)-structure. We do find that the SO(4)-invariant description, which singles out one preferential direction in the internal space, is well-adapted for describing the embedding of AdS4-filling supersymmetric D8-branes on both the original ABJM configuration as its massive Sp(2)-symmetric deformations.Supersymmetry requires these D-branes to be of the coisotropic type, which means in particular that their world-volume gauge field must be non-trivial.

On the Cosmology of Type IIA Compactifications on SU(3)-structure Manifolds

We study cosmological properties of type IIA compactifications on orientifolds of SU(3)-structure manifolds with non-vanishing geometric flux. These compactifications give rise to effective 4D N=1 supergravity theories that do not fall under some recently-proven no-go theorems against de Sitter vacua and slow-roll inflation. Focusing on a well-understood class of models based on coset spaces, however, we can use a refined no-go theorem that rules out de Sitter vacua and slow-roll inflation in all but one case. The refined no-go theorem uses the dilaton and a specific linear combination of the Kaehler moduli, which is different from the overall volume modulus. It puts a lower bound on the first slow-roll parameter: epsilon>=2. The only case not ruled out is the manifold SU(2)x SU(2), for which we indeed find critical points with epsilon numerically zero. However, all the points we could find have a tachyon corresponding to an eta-parameter eta<= -2.4.

The effective theory of type IIA AdS4 compactifications on nilmanifolds and cosets

We consider string theory compactifications of the form AdS4 x M6 with orientifold six-planes, where M6 is a six-dimensional compact space that is either a nilmanifold or a coset. For all known solutions of this type we obtain the four-dimensional N=1 low energy effective theory by computing the superpotential, the Kaehler potential and the mass spectrum for the light moduli. For the nilmanifold examples we perform a cross-check on the result for the mass spectrum by calculating it alternatively from a direct Kaluza-Klein reduction and find perfect agreement. We show that in all but one of the coset models all moduli are stabilized at the classical level. As an application we show that all but one of the coset models can potentially be used to bypass a recent no-go theorem against inflation in type IIA theory.

Supersymmetric sources, integrability and generalized-structure compactifications

In the context of supersymmetric compactifications of type II supergravity to four dimensions, we show that orientifold sources can be compatible with a generalized SU(3) x SU(3)-structure that is neither strictly SU(3) nor static SU(2). We illustrate this with explicit examples, obtained by suitably T-dualizing known solutions on the six-torus. In addition we prove the following integrability statements, valid under certain mild assumptions: (a) for general type II supergravity backgrounds with orientifold and/or D-brane generalized-calibrated sources, the source-corrected Einstein and dilaton equations of motion follow automatically from the supersymmetry equations once the likewise source-corrected form equations of motion and Bianchi identities are imposed; (b) in the special case of supersymmetric compactifications to four-dimensional Minkowski space, the equations of motion of all fields, including the NSNS three-form, follow automatically once the supersymmetry and the Bianchi identities of the forms are imposed. Both (a) and (b) are equally valid whether the sources are smeared or localized. As a byproduct we obtain the calibration form for a space-filling NS5-brane.

Type IIA AdS4 compactifications on cosets, interpolations and domain walls

We present a classification of a large class of type IIA N=1 supersymmetric compactifications to AdS4, based on left-invariant SU(3)-structures on coset spaces. In the absence of sources the parameter spaces of all cosets leading to a solution contain regions corresponding to nearly-Kaehler structure. I.e. all these cosets can be viewed as deformations of nearly-Kaehler manifolds. Allowing for (smeared) six-brane/orientifold sources we obtain more possibilities. In the second part of the paper, we use a simple ansatz, which can be applied to all six-dimensional coset manifolds considered here, to construct explicit thick domain wall solutions separating two AdS4 vacua of different radii. We also consider smooth interpolations between AdS4 x M6 and R^{1,2} x M7, where M6 is a nearly-Kaehler manifold and M7 is the G2-holonomy cone over M6.

D-branes on AdS flux compactifications

We study D-branes in N=1 flux compactifications to AdS_4. We derive their supersymmetry conditions and express them in terms of background generalized calibrations. Basically because AdS has a boundary, the analysis of stability is more subtle and qualitatively different from the usual case of Minkowski compactifications. For instance, stable D-branes filling AdS_4 may wrap trivial internal cycles. Our analysis gives a geometric realization of the four-dimensional field theory approach of Freedman and collaborators. Furthermore, the one-to-one correspondence between the supersymmetry conditions of the background and the existence of generalized calibrations for D-branes is clarified and extended to any supersymmetric flux background that admits a time-like Killing vector and for which all fields are time-independent with respect to the associated time. As explicit examples, we discuss supersymmetric D-branes on IIA nearly Kaehler AdS_4 flux compactifications.

From ten to four and back again: how to generalize the geometry

We discuss the four-dimensional N=1 effective approach in the study of warped type II flux compactifications with SU(3)x SU(3)-structure to AdS_4 or flat Minkowski space-time. The non-trivial warping makes it natural to use a supergravity formulation invariant under local complexified Weyl transformations. We obtain the classical superpotential from a standard argument involving domain walls and generalized calibrations and show how the resulting F-flatness and D-flatness equations exactly reproduce the full ten-dimensional supersymmetry equations. Furthermore, we consider the effect of non-perturbative corrections to this superpotential arising from gaugino condensation or Euclidean D-brane instantons. For the latter we derive the supersymmetry conditions in N=1 flux vacua in full generality. We find that the non-perturbative corrections induce a quantum deformation of the internal generalized geometry. Smeared instantons allow to understand KKLT-like AdS vacua from a ten-dimensional point of view. On the other hand, non-smeared instantons in IIB warped Calabi-Yau compactifications 'destabilize' the Calabi-Yau complex structure into a genuine generalized complex one. This deformation gives a geometrical explanation of the non-trivial superpotential for mobile D3-branes induced by the non-perturbative corrections.

Deformations of calibrated D-branes in flux generalized complex manifolds

We study massless deformations of generalized calibrated cycles, which describe, in the language of generalized complex geometry, supersymmetric D-branes in N=1 supersymmetric compactifications with fluxes. We find that the deformations are classified by the first cohomology group of a Lie algebroid canonically associated to the generalized calibrated cycle, seen as a generalized complex submanifold with respect to the integrable generalized complex structure of the bulk. We provide examples in the SU(3) structure case and in a `genuine' generalized complex structure case. We discuss cases of lifting of massless modes due to world-volume fluxes, background fluxes and a generalized complex structure that changes type.

Poincare Invariance in Multiple D-brane Actions

We show that the requirement of Poincare invariance (more specifically invariance under boosts/rotations that mix brane directions with transverse directions) places severe constraints on the form of actions describing multiple D-branes, determining an infinite series of correction terms to the currently known actions. For the case of D0-branes, we argue that up to field redefinitions, there is a unique Lorentz transformation rule for the coordinate matrices consistent with the Poincare algebra. We characterize all independent Poincare invariant structures by describing the leading term of each and providing an implicit construction of a Poincare invariant completion. Our construction employs new matrix-valued Lorentz covariant objects built from the coordinate matrices, which transform simply under the (extremely complicated) Lorentz transformation rule for the matrix coordinates.

Stable D-branes, calibrations and generalized Calabi-Yau geometry

We introduce generalized calibrations that take into account the gauge field on the D-brane so that calibrated submanifolds minimize the Dirac-Born-Infeld energy. We establish the calibration bound and show that the calibration form is closed in a supersymmetric background with non-vanishing NS-NS 3-form H and dilaton. We show that the calibration conditions are equivalent to the existence of unbroken supersymmetry on the D-brane. We study the problem of supersymmetric D-branes in the presence of non-vanishing H also from the world-sheet approach and find exactly the same conditions. Finally, we show that our notion of generalized calibrations is equivalent to the calibrations introduced in the context of generalized Calabi-Yau geometry in math.DG/0401221.
