Recoil Detection of the Lightest Neutralino in MSSM Singlet Extensions

We investigate the correlated predictions of singlet extended MSSM models for direct detection of the lightest neutralino with its cosmological relic density. To illustrate the general effects of the singlet, we take heavy sleptons and squarks. We apply LEP, $(g-2)_μ$ and perturbativity constraints. We find that the WMAP upper bound on the cold dark matter density limits much of the parameter space to regions where the lightest neutralino can be discovered in recoil experiments. The results for the NMSSM and UMSSM are typically similar to the MSSM since their light neutralinos have similar compositions and masses. In the n/sMSSM the neutralino is often very light and its recoil detection is within the reach of the CDMS II experiment. In general, most points in the parameter spaces of the singlet models we consider are accessible to the WARP experiment.

TeV physics and the Planck scale

Supersymmetry is one of the best motivated possibilities for new physics at the TeV scale. However, both concrete string constructions and phenomenological considerations suggest the possibility that the physics at the TeV scale could be more complicated than the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), e.g., due to extended gauge symmetries, new vector-like supermultiplets with non-standard SU(2)xU(1) assignments, and extended Higgs sectors. We briefly comment on some of these possibilities, and discuss in more detail the class of extensions of the MSSM involving an additional standard model singlet field. The latter provides a solution to the $μ$ problem, and allows significant modifications of the MSSM in the Higgs and neutralino sectors, with important consequences for collider physics, cold dark matter, and electroweak baryogenesis.

Implications of Canonical Gauge Coupling Unification in High-Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

We systematically construct two kinds of models with canonical gauge coupling unification and universal high-scale supersymmetry breaking. In the first we introduce standard vector-like particles while in the second we also include non-standard vector-like particles. We require that the gauge coupling unification scale is from 5 x 10^{15} GeV to the Planck scale, that the universal supersymmetry breaking scale is from 10 TeV to the unification scale, and that the masses of the vector-like particles (M_V) are universal and in the range from 200 GeV to 1 TeV. Using two-loop renormalization group equation (RGE) running for the gauge couplings and one-loop RGE running for Yukawa couplings and the Higgs quartic coupling, we calculate the supersymmetry breaking scales, the gauge coupling unification scales, and the corresponding Higgs mass ranges. When the vector-like particle masses are less than 1 TeV, these models can be tested at the LHC.

Collider Signatures of Singlet Extended Higgs Sectors

We explore the collider signatures of the Higgs sectors in singlet-extended MSSM models. We find that even with reduced couplings due to singlet mixing, a significant portion of the parameter spaces have a discoverable Higgs via traditional decay modes or via invisible decays (directly to neutralinos or through cascade decays to neutralinos and neutrinos). For illustrative points in parameter space we give the likelihood of Higgs discovery. In cases where neither traditional nor invisible modes can discover the Higgs, the neutralino sector may provide evidence for the extended models.

String Scale Gauge Coupling Unification with Vector-like Exotics and Non-Canonical U(1)_Y Normalization

We use a new approach to study string scale gauge coupling unification systematically, allowing both the possibility of non-canonical U(1)_Y normalization and the existence of vector-like particles whose quantum numbers are the same as those of the Standard Model (SM) fermions and their Hermitian conjugates and the SM adjoint particles. We first give all the independent sets (Yi) of particles that can be employed to achieve SU(3)_C and SU(2)_L string scale gauge coupling unification and calculate their masses. Second, for a non-canonical U(1)_Y normalization, we obtain string scale SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge coupling unification by choosing suitable U(1)_Y normalizations for each of the Yi sets. Alternatively, for the canonical U(1)_Y normalization, we achieve string scale gauge coupling unification by considering suitable combinations of the Yi sets or by introducing additional independent sets (Zi), that do not affect the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L unification at tree level, and then choosing suitable combinations, one from the Yi sets and one from the Zi sets. We also briefly discuss string scale gauge coupling unification in models with higher Kac-Moody levels for SU(2)_L or SU(3)_C.

Neutralino Signatures of the Singlet Extended MSSM

Extending the Higgs sector of the MSSM by the addition of a gauge singlet scalar field can remedy the mu problem. We explore the implications of extended models for both the spectrum of the neutralinos and the cascade decays of the neutralinos and charginos. Extra steps due to light decoupled neutralinos in the cascade decays of both neutralinos and charginos allow an excess of trilepton events compared to the MSSM and the existence of events with higher lepton multiplicity. Additionally, displaced vertices of the chi_2^0 due to small decay widths in some models may be observable.

Singlet Extensions of the MSSM

The Higgs sector of the MSSM may be extended to solve the mu problem by the addition of a gauge singlet scalar field. We consider the consequences of the singlet on the Higgs and neutralino states compositions. We discuss the potential for discovering Higgs bosons of singlet models and observing the unique multilepton signatures of the extended neutralino sector.

New Grand Unified Models with Intersecting D6-branes, Neutrino Masses, and Flipped SU(5)

We construct new supersymmetric SU(5) Grand Unified Models based on Z4 x Z2 orientifolds with intersecting D6-branes. Unlike constructions based on Z2 x Z2 orientifolds, the orbifold images of the three-cycles wrapped by D6-branes correspond to new configurations and thus allow for models in which, in addition to the chiral sector in 10 and 5-bar representations of SU(5), only, there can be new sectors with (15 + 15-bar) and (10 + 10-bar) vector-pairs. We construct an example of such a globally consistent, supersymmetric model with four-families, two Standard Model Higgs pair-candidates and the gauge symmetry U(5) x U(1) x Sp(4). In a N = 2 sector, there are 5 x (15 + 15-bar) and 1 x (10 + 10-bar) vector pairs, while another N = 1 sector contains one vector-pair of 15-plets. The N = 2 vector pairs can obtain a large mass dynamically by parallel D6-brane splitting in a particu- lar two-torus. The 15-vector-pairs provide, after symmetry breaking to the Standard Model (via parallel D-brane splitting), triplet pair candidates which can in principle play a role in generating Majorana- type masses for left-handed neutrinos, though the necessary Yukawa couplings are absent in the specific construction. Similarly, the 10- vector-pairs can play the role of Higgs fields of the flipped SU(5), though again there are phenomenological difficulties for the specific construction.

Higgs Sector in Extensions of the MSSM

Extensions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with additional singlet scalar fields solve the important mu-parameter fine tuning problem of the MSSM. We compute and compare the neutral Higgs boson mass spectra, including one-loop corrections, of the following MSSM extensions: Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM), the nearly-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (nMSSM), and the U(1)'-extended Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (UMSSM) by performing scans over model parameters. We find that the Secluded U(1)'-extended Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (sMSSM) is identical to the nMSSM if three of the additional scalars decouple. The dominant part of the one-loop corrections are model-independent since the singlet field does not couple to MSSM particles other than the Higgs doublets. Thus, model-dependent parameters enter the masses only at tree-level. We apply constraints from LEP bounds on the Standard Model and MSSM Higgs boson masses and the MSSM chargino mass, the invisible Z decay width, and the Z-Z' mixing angle. Some extended models permit a Higgs boson with mass substantially below the SM LEP limit or above theoretical limits in the MSSM. Ways to differentiate the models via masses, couplings, decays and production of the Higgs bosons are discussed.

Properties of the Lightest Neutralino in MSSM Extensions

We study neutralino sectors in extensions of the MSSM that dynamically generate the mu-term. The extra neutralino states are superpartners of the Higgs singlets and/or additional gauge bosons. The extended models may have distinct lightest neutralino properties which can have important influences on their phenomenology. We consider constraints on the lightest neutralino from LEP, Tevatron, and (g-2)_mu measurements and the relic density of the dark matter. The lightest neutralino can be extremely light and/or dominated by its singlino component, which does not couple directly to SM particles except Higgs doublets.

String-Inspired Triplet See-Saw from Diagonal Embedding of SU(2)_L in SU(2)_A x SU(2)_B

Motivated by string constructions, we consider a variant on the Type II see-saw mechanism involving the exchange of triplet representations of SU(2)_L in which this group arises from a diagonal embedding into SU(2)_A x SU(2)_B. A natural assignment of Standard Model lepton doublets to the two underlying gauge groups results in a bimaximal pattern of neutrino mixings and an inverted hierarchy in masses. Simple perturbations around this leading-order structure can accommodate the observed pattern of neutrino masses and mixings.

Neutrino Physics

The theoretical and experimental bases of neutrino mass and mixing are reviewed. A brief chronological evolution of the weak interactions, the electroweak Standard Model, and neutrinos is presented. Dirac and Majorana mass terms are explained as well as models such as the seesaw mechanism. Schemes for two, three and four neutrino mixings are presented.

Non-Canonical Gauge Coupling Unification in High-Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

The string landscape suggests that the supersymmetry breaking scale can be high, and then the simplest low energy effective theory is the Standard Model (SM). Considering grand unification scale supersymmetry breaking, we show that gauge coupling unification can be achieved at about 10^{16-17} GeV in the SM with suitable normalizations of the U(1)_Y, and we predict that the Higgs mass range is 127 GeV to 165 GeV, with the precise value strongly correlated with the top quark mass m_t and SU(3)_C gauge coupling. For example, if m_t=178\pm1 GeV, the Higgs boson mass is predicted to be between 141 GeV and 154 GeV. We also point out that gauge coupling unification in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) does not imply the canonical U(1)_Y normalization. In addition, we present 7-dimensional orbifold grand unified theories (GUTs) in which such normalizations for the U(1)_Y and charge quantization can be realized. The supersymmetry can be broken at the grand unification scale by the Scherk--Schwarz mechanism. We briefly comment on a non-canonical U(1)_Y normalization due to the brane localized gauge kinetic terms in orbifold GUTs.

Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment in a Supersymmetric U(1)' Model

We study the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_μ= (g_μ- 2)/2 in a supersymmetric U(1)' model. The neutralino sector has extra components from the superpartners of the U(1)' gauge boson and the extra Higgs singlets that break the U(1)' symmetry. The theoretical maximum bound on the lightest neutralino mass is much smaller than that of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) because of the mixing pattern of the extra components. In a U(1)' model where the U(1)' symmetry is broken by a secluded sector (the S-model), tanβis required to be < 3 to have realistic electroweak symmetry breaking. These facts suggest that the a_μprediction may be meaningfully different from that of the MSSM. We evaluate and compare the muon anomalous magnetic moment in this model and the MSSM and discuss the constraints on tanβand relevant soft breaking terms. There are regions of the parameter space that can explain the experimental deviation of a_μfrom the Standard Model calculation and yield an acceptable cold dark matter relic density without conflict with collider experimental constraints.

Toward Realistic Intersecting D-Brane Models

We provide a pedagogical introduction to a recently studied class of phenomenologically interesting string models, known as Intersecting D-Brane Models. The gauge fields of the Standard-Model are localized on D-branes wrapping certain compact cycles on an underlying geometry, whose intersections can give rise to chiral fermions. We address the basic issues and also provide an overview of the recent activity in this field. This article is intended to serve non-experts with explanations of the fundamental aspects, and also to provide some orientation for both experts and non-experts in this active field of string phenomenology.
