Structure of the Standard Model

The structure of the standard model is concisely summarized, including the standard model Lagrangian, spontaneous symmetry breaking, the reexpression of the Lagrangian in terms of mass eigenstates after symmetry breaking, and the gauge interactions. The problems of the standard model are described.

Alternatives to the Seesaw: Extra Z's and Constraints on Large Extra Dimensions

Alternatives to the traditional grand unified theory seesaw for neutrino masses are briefly described. These include the possibility of large extra dimensions and various possibilities for models involving an extra U(1)' gauge symmetry. The difficulty of observing Majorana phases in neutrinoless double beta decay is also briefly commented on.

Time Variation of Fundamental Constants as a Probe of New Physics

Time variation of fundamental constants would not be surprising in the framework of theories involving extra dimensions. The variation of any one constant is likely to be correlated with variations of others in a pattern that is diagnostic of the underlying physics.

Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking in Standard-like Models with Intersecting D6-branes

We address dynamical supersymmetry breaking within a N=1 supersymmetric Standard-like Model based on a Z_2 x Z_2 Type IIA orientifold with intersecting D6-branes. The model possesses an additional, confining gauge sector with the USp(2)_A x USp(2)_B x USp(4) gauge group, where the gaugino condensation mechanism allows for the breaking of supersymmetry and stabilizes moduli. We derive the leading contribution to the non-perturbative effective superpotential and determine numerically the minima of the supergravity potential. These minima break supersymmetry and fix two undetermined moduli, which in turn completely specify the gauge couplings at the string scale. For this specific construction the minima have a negative cosmological constant. We expect that for other supersymmetric Standard-like models with intersecting D6-branes, which also possess confining gauge sectors, the supersymmetry breaking mechanism would have qualitatively similar features.

Primordial Nucleosynthesis Constraints on Z' Properties

In models involving new TeV-scale Z' gauge bosons, the new U(1)' symmetry often prevents the generation of Majorana masses needed for a conventional neutrino seesaw, leading to three superweakly interacting ``right-handed'' neutrinos nu_R, the Dirac partners of the ordinary neutrinos. These can be produced prior to big bang nucleosynthesis by the Z' interactions, leading to a faster expansion rate and too much ^4He. We quantify the constraints on the Z' properties from nucleosynthesis for Z' couplings motivated by a class of E_6 models parametrized by an angle theta_E6. The rate for the annihilation of three approximately massless right-handed neutrinos into other particle pairs through the Z' channel is calculated. The decoupling temperature, which is higher than that of ordinary left-handed neutrinos due to the large Z' mass, is evaluated, and the equivalent number of new doublet neutrinos Delta N_nu is obtained numerically as a function of the Z' mass and couplings for a variety of assumptions concerning the Z-Z' mixing angle and the quark-hadron transition temperature T_c. Except near the values of theta_E6 for which the Z' decouples from the right-handed neutrinos, the Z' mass and mixing constraints from nucleosynthesis are much more stringent than the existing laboratory limits from searches for direct production or from precision electroweak data, and are comparable to the ranges that may ultimately be probed at proposed colliders. For the case T_c = 150 MeV with the theoretically favored range of Z-Z' mixings, Delta N_nu < 0.3 for M_Z' > 4.3 TeV for any value of theta_E6. Larger mixing or larger T_c often lead to unacceptably large Delta N_nu except near the nu_R decoupling limit.

Effects of genuine dimension-six Higgs operators

We systematically discuss the consequences of genuine dimension-six Higgs operators. These operators are not subject to stringent constraints from electroweak precision data. However, they can modify the couplings of the Higgs boson to electroweak gauge bosons and, in particular, the Higgs self-interactions. We study the sensitivity to which those couplings can be probed at future $\ee$ linear colliders in the sub-TeV and in the multi-TeV range. We find that for $\sqrt s=500$ GeV with a luminosity of 1 ab$^{-1}$ the anomalous $WWH$ and $ZZH$ couplings may be probed to about the 0.01 level, and the anomalous $HHH$ coupling to about the 0.1 level.

A Three-Family Standard-like Orientifold Model: Yukawa Couplings and Hierarchy

We discuss the hierarchy of Yukawa couplings in a supersymmetric three family Standard-like string Model. The model is constructed by compactifying Type IIA string theory on a Z_2 x Z_2 orientifold in which the Standard Model matter fields arise from intersecting D6-branes. When lifted to M theory, the model amounts to compactification of M-theory on a G_2 manifold. While the actual fermion masses depend on the vacuum expectation values of the multiple Higgs fields in the model, we calculate the leading worldsheet instanton contributions to the Yukawa couplings and examine the implications of the Yukawa hierarchy.

Phenomenology of A Three-Family Standard-like String Model

We discuss the phenomenology of a three-family supersymmetric Standard-like Model derived from the orientifold construction, in which the ordinary chiral states are localized at the intersection of branes at angles. In addition to the Standard Model group, there are two additional U(1)' symmetries, one of which has family non-universal and therefore flavor changing couplings, and a quasi-hidden non-abelian sector which becomes strongly coupled above the electroweak scale. The perturbative spectrum contains a fourth family of exotic (SU(2)- singlet) quarks and leptons, in which, however, the left-chiral states have unphysical electric charges. It is argued that these decouple from the low energy spectrum due to hidden sector charge confinement, and that anomaly matching requires the physical left-chiral states to be composites. The model has multiple Higgs doublets and additional exotic states. The moduli-dependent predictions for the gauge couplings are discussed. The strong coupling agrees with experiment for reasonable moduli, but the electroweak couplings are too small.

The Z-Z' Mass Hierarchy in a Supersymmetric Model with a Secluded U(1)'-Breaking Sector

We consider the Z'/Z mass hierarchy in a supersymmetric model in which the U(1)' is broken in a secluded sector coupled to the ordinary sector only by gauge and possibly soft terms. A large mass hierarchy can be achieved while maintaining the normal sparticle spectra if there is a direction in which the tree level potential becomes flat when a particular Yukawa coupling vanishes. We describe the conditions needed for the desired breaking pattern, to avoid unwanted global symmetries, and for an acceptable effective mu parameter. The electroweak breaking is dominated by A terms rather than scalar masses, leading to tan beta ~ 1. The spectrum of the symmetry breaking sector is displayed. There is significant mixing between the MSSM particles and new standard model singlets, for both the Higgs scalars and the neutralinos. A larger Yukawa coupling for the effective mu parameter is allowed than in the NMSSM because of the U(1)' contribution to the running from a high scale. The upper bound on the tree-level mass of the lightest CP even Higgs doublet mass is about c x 174 GeV, where c is of order unity, but the actual mass eigenvalues are generally smaller because of singlet mixing.

Implications of Gauge Unification for Time Variation of the Fine Structure Constant

Unification of the gauge couplings would imply that time variations of the fine structure constant are accompanied by calculable and very significant time variations in the QCD scale parameter $Λ_{QCD}$. Since $Λ_{QCD}$ is the dominant factor in setting the hadron masses, estimates made by simple variations of the fine structure constant may not provide meaningful limits. There may also be related variations in Yukawa couplings and the electroweak scale. Implications for the 21 cm hyperfine transition, big bang nucleosynthesis, and the triple alpha process are discussed. We find that the first of these already provides strong constraints on the underlying theory. It is emphasized more generally that time (and space) variations of fundamental couplings and their correlations may be a significant probe of ultra-high-energy physics.

Precision Electroweak Data: Phenomenological Analysis

The precision electroweak program, including weak neutral current (WNC), $Z$-pole, and high energy collider experiments, has been the primary prediction and test of electroweak unification. It has established that the standard model (SM) is correct and unique to first approximation, establishing the gauge principle as well as the SM gauge group and representations; shown that the SM is correct at loop level, confirming the basic principles of renormalizable gauge theory and allowing the successful prediction or constraint on $m_t$, $α_s$, and $M_H$; severely constrained new physics at the TeV scale, with the ideas of unification strongly favored over TeV-scale compositeness; and yielded precise values for the gauge couplings, consistent with (supersymmetric) gauge unification.

Neutrino Oscillation Workshop 2000: Conference Summary

The NOW2000 Workshop summarized the present status and future possibilities for all aspects of neutrino physics and astrophysics. Neutrino oscillation physics has truly come of age in the last few years. It is now data driven (analogous to cosmology and much of high energy physics in general). Experimental techniques and the theoretical interpretation have developed dramatically. An example of the latter includes the more realistic analysis of neutrino oscillations in the framework of 3 or more mass eigenstates. The phenomenological emphasis has shifted from degenerate to hierarchical neutrino spectra.

D=4 N=1 Type IIB Orientifolds with Continuous Wilson Lines, Moving Branes, and their Field Theory Realization

We investigate four-dimensional N=1 Type IIB orientifolds with continuous Wilson lines, and their T-dual realizations as orientifolds with moving branes. When continuous Wilson lines become discrete the gauge symmetry is enhanced and the T-dual orientifold corresponds to branes sitting at the orbifold fixed points. There is a field theoretic analog describing these phenomena as D- and F-flat deformations of the T-dual model, where the branes sit at the origin (original model without Wilson lines) as well as a deformation of the T-dual model where sets of branes sit at the fixed points (the model with discrete Wilson lines). We demonstrate these phenomena for the prototype Z_3 orientifold: we present an explicit construction of the general set of continuous Wilson lines as well as their explicit field theoretic realization.

Flavor Changing Effects in Theories with a Heavy Z' Boson with Family Non-Universal Couplings

There are theoretical and phenomenological motivations that there may exist additional heavy Z' bosons with family non-universal couplings. Flavor mixing in the quark and lepton sectors will then lead to flavor changing couplings of the heavy Z', and also of the ordinary Z when Z-Z' mixing is included. The general formalism of such effects is described, and applications are made to a variety of flavor changing and CP-violating tree and loop processes. Results are described for three specific cases motivated by a specific heterotic string model and by phenomenological considerations, including cases in which all three families have different couplings, and those in which the first two families, but not the third, have the same couplings. Even within a specific theory the results are model dependent because of unknown quark and lepton mixing matrices. However, assuming that typical mixings are comparable to the CKM matrix, processes such as coherent mu-e conversion in a muonic atom, K^0-\Bar{K}^0 and B-\Bar{B} mixing, epsilon, and epsilon'/epsilon lead to significant constraints on Z' bosons in the theoretically and phenomenologically motivated range M_{Z'} \sim 1 TeV.

Alternative Supersymmetric Spectra

We describe the features of supersymmetric spectra, alternative to and qualitatively different from that of most versions of the MSSM. The spectra are motivated by extensions of the MSSM with an extra U(1)' gauge symmetry, expected in many grand unified and superstring models, which provide a plausible solution to the mu problem, both for models with supergravity and for gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. Typically, many or all of the squarks are rather heavy (larger than one TeV), especially for the first two families, as are the sleptons in the supergravity models. However, there is a richer spectrum of Higgs particles, neutralinos, and (possibly) charginos. Concrete examples of such spectra are presented, and the phenomenological implications are briefly discussed.

Indications for an Extra Neutral Gauge Boson in Electroweak Precision Data

A new analysis of the hadronic peak cross section at LEP 1 implies a small amount of missing invisible width in Z decays, while the effective weak charge in atomic parity violation has been determined recently to 0.6% accuracy, indicating a significantly negative S parameter. As a consequence of these two deviations, the data are described well if the presence of an additional Z' boson, such as predicted in Grand Unified Theories, is assumed. Moreover, the data are now rich enough to study an arbitrary extra Z' boson and to determine its couplings in a model independent way. An excellent best fit to the data is obtained in this case, suggesting the possibility of a family non-universal Z' with properties similar to ones predicted in a class of superstring theories.
