The applicability of equal area partitions of the unit sphere

This paper addresses the idea of the applicability of mathematics, using, as a case study, a construction and software package that partition the unit sphere into regions of equal area. The paper assesses the applicability of this construction and software by examining citing works, including papers, dissertations and software.

Classifying bent functions by their Cayley graphs

In 1999 Bernasconi and Codenotti noted that the Cayley graph of a bent function is strongly regular. This paper describes the concept of extended Cayley equivalence of bent functions, discusses some connections between bent functions, designs, and codes, and explores the relationship between extended Cayley equivalence and extended affine equivalence. SageMath scripts and CoCalc worksheets are used to compute and display some of these relationships, for bent functions up to dimension 8.

Twin bent functions, strongly regular Cayley graphs, and Hurwitz-Radon theory

The real monomial representations of Clifford algebras give rise to two sequences of bent functions. For each of these sequences, the corresponding Cayley graphs are strongly regular graphs, and the corresponding sequences of strongly regular graph parameters coincide. Even so, the corresponding graphs in the two sequences are not isomorphic, except in the first 3 cases. The proof of this non-isomorphism is a simple consequence of a theorem of Radon.

Sparse grid quadrature on products of spheres

We examine sparse grid quadrature on weighted tensor products (WTP) of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on products of the unit sphere, in the case of worst case quadrature error for rules with arbitrary quadrature weights. We describe a dimension adaptive quadrature algorithm based on an algorithm of Hegland (2003), and also formulate a version of Wasilkowski and Wozniakowski's WTP algorithm (1999), here called the WW algorithm. We prove that the dimension adaptive algorithm is optimal in the sense of Dantzig (1957) and therefore no greater in cost than the WW algorithm. Both algorithms therefore have the optimal asymptotic rate of convergence given by Theorem 3 of Wasilkowski and Wozniakowski (1999). A numerical example shows that, even though the asymptotic convergence rate is optimal, if the dimension weights decay slowly enough, and the dimensionality of the problem is large enough, the initial convergence of the dimension adaptive algorithm can be slow.

Discrepancy, separation and Riesz energy of finite point sets on compact connected Riemannian manifolds

On a smooth compact connected $d$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, if $0 < s < d$ then an asymptotically equidistributed sequence of finite subsets of $M$ that is also well-separated yields a sequence of Riesz $s$-energies that converges to the energy double integral, with a rate of convergence depending on the geodesic ball discrepancy. This generalizes a known result for the sphere.

The abstract Hodge-Dirac operator and its stable discretization

This paper adapts the techniques of finite element exterior calculus to study and discretize the abstract Hodge-Dirac operator, which is a square root of the abstract Hodge-Laplace operator considered by Arnold, Falk, and Winther [Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 47 (2010), 281-354]. Dirac-type operators are central to the field of Clifford analysis, where recently there has been considerable interest in their discretization. We prove a priori stability and convergence estimates, and show that several of the results in finite element exterior calculus can be recovered as corollaries of these new estimates.
