Impurity-induced moment freezing in NaFe$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_2$

We report the impact of magnetic impurity substitution on the quantum disordered magnetic ground state of NaRuO$_2$. Local $S=5/2$ moments are introduced into the frustrated triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ Ru moments via Fe-substitution in NaFe$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_2$, and the evolution of the magnetic ground state is reported. Local spin freezing associated with conventional spin glass behavior is observed upon Fe substitution, marking an impurity-induced freezing of the primarily dynamic magnetic ground state in NaRuO$_2$. Furthermore, local Fe moments induce a Curie-Weiss magnetic behavior in the uniform magnetic susceptibility, and the local moment magnitude is best described by dynamic Ru moments polarized about impurity sites. Our results establish an impurity-doping phenomenology consistent with inherently dynamic moments in NaRuO$_2$ that are pinned by local magnetic impurities, similar to ``swiss cheese" models of impurity-substituted copper oxides.

Pressure tuning of intrinsic and extrinsic sources to the anomalous Hall effect in CrGeTe$_3$

The integrated Berry curvature is a geometric property that has dramatic implications for material properties. This study investigates the integrated Berry curvature and other contributions to the anomalous Hall effect in CrGeTe$_3$ as a function of pressure. The anomalous Hall effect is absent in the insulating phase of CrGeTe$_3$ and evolves with pressure in a dome-like fashion as pressure is applied. The dome's edges are characterized by Fermi surface deformations, manifested as mixed electron and hole transport. We corroborate the presence of bipolar transport by ab-initio calculations which also predict a nonmonotonic behavior of the Berry curvature as a function of pressure. Quantitative discrepancies between our calculations and experimental results indicate that additional scattering mechanisms, which are also strongly tuned by pressure, contribute to the anomalous Hall effect in CrGeTe$_3$.

Revisiting spin ice physics in the ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

Pyrochlore materials are characterized by their hallmark network of corner-sharing rare-earth tetrahedra, which can produce a wide array of complex magnetic ground states. Ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlores often obey the "two-in-two-out" spin ice rules, which can lead to a highly-degenerate spin structure. Large moment systems, such as Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, tend to host a classical spin ice state with low-temperature spin freezing and emergent magnetic monopoles. Systems with smaller effective moments, such as Pr$^{3+}$-based pyrochlores, have been proposed as excellent candidates for hosting a "quantum spin ice" characterized by entanglement and a slew of exotic quasiparticle excitations. However, experimental evidence for a quantum spin ice state has remained elusive. Here, we show that the low-temperature magnetic properties of Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ satisfy several important criteria for continued consideration as a quantum spin ice. We find that Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ exhibits a partially spin-frozen ground state with a large volume fraction of dynamic magnetism. Our comprehensive bulk characterization and neutron scattering measurements enable us to map out the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, producing results consistent with expectations for a ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore. We identify key hallmarks of spin ice physics, and show that the application of small magnetic fields ($μ_0 H_c \sim$0.75T) suppresses the spin ice state and induces a long-range ordered magnetic structure. Together, our work clarifies the current state of Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and encourages future studies aimed at exploring the potential for a quantum spin ice ground state in this system.

YbV$_3$Sb$_4$ and EuV$_3$Sb$_4$, vanadium-based kagome metals with Yb$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{2+}$ zig-zag chains

Here we present YbV$_3$Sb$_4$ and EuV$_3$Sb$_4$, two new compounds exhibiting slightly distorted vanadium-based kagome nets interleaved with zig-zag chains of divalent Yb$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{2+}$ ions. Single crystal growth methods are reported alongside magnetic, electronic, and thermodynamic measurements. YbV$_3$Sb$_4$ is a nonmagnetic metal with no collective phase transitions observed between 60mK and 300K. Conversely, EuV$_3$Sb$_4$ is a magnetic kagome metal exhibiting easy-plane ferromagnetic-like order below $T_\text{C}$=32K with signatures of noncollinearity under low field. Our discovery of YbV$_3$Sb$_4$ and EuV$_3$Sb$_4$ demonstrate another direction for the discovery and development of vanadium-based kagome metals while incorporating the chemical and magnetic degrees of freedom offered by a rare-earth sublattice.

Complete miscibility amongst AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome superconductors: design of mixed A-site AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A: K, Rb, Cs) alloys

In this work we explore the chemical-property phase diagram of the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ family through A-site alloying. We demonstrate full miscibility of the alkali-site, highlighting that the three parent compounds are the terminal ends of a single solid-solution. Using both polycrystalline and single crystal methods, we map the dependence of the two primary electronic instabilities: (1) the onset of charge density wave (CDW) order ($T_\text{CDW}$) and (2) the onset of superconductivity ($T_\text{c}$) with alkali-site composition. We show continuous trends in both $T_\text{CDW}$ and $T_\text{c}$, including a region of enhanced CDW stability in K$_{1-x}$Cs$_{x}$V$_3$Sb$_5$ alloys. Together, our results open new routes for chemical perturbation and exploration of the chemical-property relationships in the class of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome superconductors.

Defect control in the Heisenberg-Kitaev candidate material NaRuO$_2$

The combination of geometric frustration, extended hopping, spin-orbit coupling, and a disordered magnetic ground state make NaRuO$_{2}$ an attractive Heisenberg-Kitaev candidate material. Historically, NaRuO$_2$ has been a challenging material to produce, even in polycrystalline form. Here we present synthetic efforts that identify a propensity for Na$_\text{Ru}$ defects to form in NaRuO$_2$, revealing a full solid-solution between NaRuO$_{2}$ and disordered Na$_2$RuO$_3$. We report the synthesis of alloys along the Na$_{3+x}$Ru$_{3-x}$O$_6$ solid solution and characterize changes in the bulk magnetization and electron transport as a function of Na-loading. Our results highlight the importance of stoichiometry control in NaRuO$_{2}$ when investigating and interpreting this material's physical properties.

Electronic and structural properties of RbCeX$_2$ (X$_2$: O$_2$, S$_2$, SeS, Se$_2$, TeSe, Te$_2$)

Triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCe$X_2$ compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce$^{3+}$ ions, upon varying their anion character ($X_2$= O$_2$, S$_2$, SeS, Se$_2$, TeSe, Te$_2$). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO$_2$, that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO$_2$. Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and \textit{ab initio} calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the $J=5/2$ multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the $J=5/2$ manifold, we observe one extra, local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce$^{3+}$ sites.

Traversing the pyrochlore stability diagram; microwave-assisted synthesis and discovery of mixed B-site Ln$_2$InSbO$_7$ family

The lanthanide pyrochlore oxides Ln$_2$B$_2$O$_7$ are one of the most intensely studied classes of materials within condensed matter physics, firmly centered as one of the pillars of frustrated magnetism. The extensive chemical diversity of the pyrochlores, coupled with their innate geometric frustration, enables realization of a wide array of exotic and complex magnetic ground states. Thus, the discovery of new pyrochlore compositions has been a persistent theme that continues to drive the field in exciting directions. The recent focus on the mixed B-site pyrochlores offers a unique route towards tuning both local coordination chemistry and sterics, while maintaining a nominally pristine magnetic sublattice. Here, we present a broad overview of the pyrochlore stability field, integrating recent synthetic efforts in mixed B-site systems with the historically established Ln$_2$B$_2$O$_7$ families. In parallel, we present the discovery and synthesis of the entire Ln$_2$InSbO$_7$ family (Ln: La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) located near the boundary of the pyrochlore stability field using a rapid, hybrid mechanicochemical/microwave-assisted synthesis technique. Magnetic characterization on the entire class of compounds draws striking parallels to the stannate analogs, suggesting that these compounds may host a breadth of exotic magnetic ground states.

Spin-orbit excitons and electronic configuration of the $5d^4$ insulator Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$F$_2$

Here we report on the low-energy excitations within the paramagnetic spin-orbit insulator Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$F$_2$ studied via resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, \textit{ab initio} quantum chemical calculations, and model-Hamiltonian simulations. This material is a unique $d^{4}$ Ir$^{5+}$ analog of Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ that forms when F ions are intercalated within the SrO layers spacing the square lattice IrO$_{6}$ bilayers of Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Due to the large distortions about the Ir$^{5+}$ ions, our computations demonstrate that a large single-ion anisotropy yields an $S$=1 ($L{\approx}$1, $J{\approx}$0) ground state wave function. Weakly coupled, excitonic modes out of the $S_z$=0 ground state are observed and are well-described by a phenomenological spin-orbit exciton model previously developed for $3d$ and $4d$ transition metal ions. The implications of our results regarding the interpretation of previous studies of hole-doped iridates close to $d^{4}$ fillings are discussed.

Study of the electronic properties of topological kagome metals YV$_6$Sn$_6$ and GdV$_6$Sn$_6$

The synthesis and characterization of vanadium-based kagome metals YV$_6$Sn$_6$ and GdV$_6$Sn$_6$ are presented. X-ray diffraction, magnetization, magnetotransport, and heat capacity measurements reveal an ideal kagome network of V-ions coordinated by Sn and separated by triangular lattice planes of rare-earth ions. The onset of low-temperature, likely noncollinear, magnetic order of Gd spins is detected in GdV$_6$Sn$_6$, while V-ions in both compounds remain nonmagnetic. Density functional theory calculations are presented modeling the band structures of both compounds, which can be classified as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metals in the paramagnetic state. Both compounds exhibit high mobility, multiband transport and present an interesting platform for controlling the interplay between magnetic order associated with the $R$-site sublattice and nontrivial band topology associated with the V-based kagome network. Our results invite future exploration of other $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$=rare earth) variants where this interplay can be tuned via $R$-site substitution.

Fermi surface mapping and the nature of charge density wave order in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recently discovered family of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A: K, Rb Cs) kagome metals possess a unique combination of nontrivial band topology, superconducting ground states, and signatures of electron correlations manifest via competing charge density wave order. Little is understood regarding the nature of the charge density wave (CDW) instability inherent to these compounds and the potential correlation with the accompanying onset of a large anomalous Hall response. To understand the impact of the CDW order on the electronic structure in these systems, we present quantum oscillation measurements on single crystals of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Our data provides direct evidence that the CDW invokes a substantial reconstruction of the Fermi surface pockets associated with the vanadium orbitals and the kagome lattice framework. In conjunction with density functional theory modeling, we are able to identify split oscillation frequencies originating from reconstructed pockets built from vanadium orbitals and Dirac-like bands. Complementary diffraction measurements are further able to demonstrate that the CDW instability has a correlated phasing between neighboring V$_3$Sb$_5$ planes. These results provide critical insights into the underlying CDW instability in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome metals and support minimal models of CDW order arising from within the vanadium-based kagome lattice.

Superconductivity in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$

Here we report the observation of bulk superconductivity in single crystals of the two-dimensional kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$. Magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements reveal superconductivity below $T_c = 0.93$K, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further characterize the normal state as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metal. Our results demonstrate that the recent observation of superconductivity within the related kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is likely a common feature across the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A: K, Rb, Cs) family of compounds and establish them as a rich arena for studying the interplay between bulk superconductivity, topological surface states, and likely electronic density wave order in an exfoliable kagome lattice.

CsV$_3$Sb$_5$: a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological kagome metal with a superconducting ground state

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T$_{c} = 2.5$K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), which categorize CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level ($E_F$), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high temperature charge density wave-like instability. The implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Coexistence of metallic and nonmetallic properties in the pyrochlore Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$

Transition metal oxides of the $4d$ and $5d$ block have recently become the targets of materials discovery, largely due to their strong spin-orbit coupling that can generate exotic magnetic and electronic states. Here we report the high pressure synthesis of Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$, a new cubic pyrochlore oxide based on $4d^5$ Rh$^{4+}$ and characterizations via thermodynamic, electrical transport, and muon spin relaxation measurements. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a large temperature-independent Pauli paramagnetic contribution, while heat capacity shows an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ$ = 21.8(1) mJ/mol-Rh K$^2$. Muon spin relaxation measurements confirm that Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ remains paramagnetic down to 2 K. Taken in combination, these three measurements suggest that Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ is a correlated paramagnetic metal with a Wilson ratio of $R_W = 2.5$. However, electric transport measurements present a striking contradiction as the resistivity of Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ is observed to monotonically increase with decreasing temperature, indicative of a nonmetallic state. Furthermore, although the magnitude of the resistivity is that of a semiconductor, the temperature dependence does not obey any conventional form. Thus, we propose that Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ may belong to the same novel class of non-Fermi liquids as the nonmetallic metal FeCrAs.

Incommensurate crystal supercell and polarization-flop observed in the magnetoelectric ilmenite, MnTiO3

MnTiO3 has been studied for many decades, but it was only in the last few years that its strong magnetoelectric behavior had been observed. Here, we use neutron scattering on two separately grown single crystals and two powder samples to show the presence of a supercell that breaks R-3 symmetry. We also present the temperature and field dependence of the dielectric constant and pyroelectric current, and show evidence of non-zero off-diagonal magnetoelectric tensor elements (forbidden by R-3 symmetry) followed by a polarization flop accompanying the spin flop transition at μ0HSF = 6.5 T. Mössbauer spectroscopy on MnTiO3 gently doped with 57Fe was used to help shed light on the impact of the supercell on the observed behavior. Although the full supercell structure could not be solved at this time due to a lack of visible reflections, the full-scope of the results presented here suggest that the role of local spin-lattice coupling in the magnetoelectric properties of MnTiO3 is likely more important than previously thought.
