Pascal arrays: counting Catalan sets

Motivated by representation theory we exhibit an interior structure to Catalan sequences and many generalisations thereof. Certain of these coincide with well known (but heretofore isolated) structures. The remainder are new.

A geometric characterisation of the blocks of the Brauer algebra

We give a geometric description of the blocks of the Brauer algebra $B_n(δ)$ in characteristic zero as orbits of the Weyl group of type $D_n$. We show how the corresponding affine Weyl group controls the representation theory of the Brauer algebra in positive characteristic, with orbits corresponding to unions of blocks.

Towers of recollement and bases for diagram algebras: planar diagrams and a little beyond

The recollement approach to the representation theory of sequences of algebras is extended to pass basis information directly through the globalisation functor. The method is hence adapted to treat sequences that are not necessarily towers by inclusion, such as symplectic blob algebras (diagram algebra quotients of the type-$\hati{C}$ Hecke algebras). By carefully reviewing the diagram algebra construction, we find a new set of functors interrelating module categories of ordinary blob algebras (diagram algebra quotients of the type-${B}$ Hecke algebras) at {\em different} values of the algebra parameters. We show that these functors generalise to determine the structure of symplectic blob algebras, and hence of certain two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebras arising in Statistical Mechanics. We identify the diagram basis with a cellular basis for each symplectic blob algebra, and prove that these algebras are quasihereditary over a field for almost all parameter choices, and generically semisimple. (That is, we give bases for all cell and standard modules.)

Representation theory of towers of recollement: theory, notes, and examples

We give an axiomatic framework for studying the representation theory of towers of algebras. We introduce a new class of algebras, contour algebras, generalising (and interpolating between) blob algebras and cyclotomic Temperley-Lieb algebras. We demonstrate the utility of our formalism by applying it to this class.

On the algebraic approach to cubic lattice Potts models

We consider Diagram algebras, $\Dg(G)$ (generalized Temperley-Lieb algebras) defined for a large class of graphs $G$, including those of relevance for cubic lattice Potts models, and study their structure for generic $Q$. We find that these algebras are too large to play the precisely analogous role in three dimensions to that played by the Temperley-Lieb algebras for generic $Q$ in the planar case. We outline measures to extract the quotient algebra that would illuminate the physics of three dimensional Potts models.

Algebras in Higher Dimensional Statistical Mechanics - the Exceptional Partition (MEAN Field) Algebras

We determine the structure of the partition algebra $P_n(Q)$ (a generalized Temperley-Lieb algebra) for specific values of $Q \in \C$, focusing on the quotient which gives rise to the partition function of $n$ site $Q$-state Potts models (in the continuous $Q$ formulation) in arbitrarily high lattice dimensions (the mean field case). The algebra is non-semi-simple iff $Q$ is a non-negative integer less than $n$. We determine the dimension of the key irreducible representation in every specialization.

The Blob Algebra and the Periodic Temperley-Lieb Algebra

We determine the structure of two variations on the Temperley-Lieb algebra, both used for dealing with special kinds of boundary conditions in statistical mechanics models. The first is a new algebra, the `blob' algebra (the reason for the name will become obvious shortly!). We determine both the generic and all the exceptional structures for this two parameter algebra. The second is the periodic Temperley-Lieb algebra. The generic structure and part of the exceptional structure of this algebra have already been studied. Here we complete the analysis, using results from the study of the blob algebra.
