Transformer-Assisted LLM-Based Source Code Summarisation: to Enable More Secure Software Development

Neural Source Code Summarisation (NSCS) aims to generate natural language summaries of source code to improve developers' and maintainers' understanding of code. Source code summaries are vital during the maintenance phase of the Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC), as they improve maintainers' understanding of code and help reduce the number of bugs and vulnerabilities in a software system. However, summaries are often missing, incomplete, or outdated in many software systems. Solutions to this problem use small, task-specific Transformer models or code-aware Large Language Models (LLMs). Task-specific Transformer-generated summaries often score well across many natural language generation (NLG) metrics, but these metrics reward lexical overlap rather than summary quality. Conversely, the ability of LLMs to capture semantics and produce high-quality summaries presents an exciting solution to this problem. This is especially relevant given the increased availability of LLMs and improvements in workstation hardware in recent years, which mean that some LLMs can now be run on developers' workstations. However, because of their abstractive nature, LLM-generated code summaries often differ greatly from developer-written summaries in the words and phrases they use, resulting in low scores across NLG metrics. We show how combining these two methods, by using Transformer-generated summaries in prompt engineering, may enable LLMs to create better source code summaries and help software practitioners maintain secure systems. We prompt four LLMs using four different prompts, with a task-specific Transformer used to assist the LLMs within the prompts. We present "Transformer-Assisted LLM-Based Source Code Summarisation", a method through which we observe an improvement of 7.8% in BLEU-4 and 5%.

GaelEval: Benchmarking LLM Performance for Scottish Gaelic

Multilingual large language models (LLMs) often exhibit emergent 'shadow' capabilities in languages without official support, yet their performance on these languages remains uneven and under-measured. This is particularly acute for morphosyntactically rich minority languages such as Scottish Gaelic, where translation benchmarks fail to capture structural competence. We introduce GaelEval, the first multi-dimensional benchmark for Gaelic, comprising: (i) an expert-authored morphosyntactic MCQA task; (ii) a culturally grounded translation benchmark and (iii) a large-scale cultural knowledge Q&A task. Evaluating 19 LLMs against a fluent-speaker human baseline ($n=30$), we find that Gemini 3 Pro Preview achieves $83.3\%$ accuracy on the linguistic task, surpassing the human baseline ($78.1\%$). Proprietary models consistently outperform open-weight systems, and in-language (Gaelic) prompting yields a small but stable advantage (+$2.4\%$). On the cultural task, leading models exceed $90\%$ accuracy, though most systems perform worse under Gaelic prompting and absolute scores are inflated relative to the manual benchmark. Overall, GaelEval reveals that frontier models achieve above-human performance on several dimensions of Gaelic grammar, demonstrates the effect of Gaelic prompting and shows a consistent performance gap favouring proprietary over open-weight models.

Structured Prompting for Arabic Essay Proficiency: A Trait-Centric Evaluation Approach

This paper presents a novel prompt engineering framework for trait specific Automatic Essay Scoring (AES) in Arabic, leveraging large language models (LLMs) under zero-shot and few-shot configurations. Addressing the scarcity of scalable, linguistically informed AES tools for Arabic, we introduce a three-tier prompting strategy (standard, hybrid, and rubric-guided) that guides LLMs in evaluating distinct language proficiency traits such as organization, vocabulary, development, and style. The hybrid approach simulates multi-agent evaluation with trait specialist raters, while the rubric-guided method incorporates scored exemplars to enhance model alignment. In zero and few-shot settings, we evaluate eight LLMs on the QAES dataset, the first publicly available Arabic AES resource with trait level annotations. Experimental results using Quadratic Weighted Kappa (QWK) and Confidence Intervals show that Fanar-1-9B-Instruct achieves the highest trait level agreement in both zero and few-shot prompting (QWK = 0.28 and CI = 0.41), with rubric-guided prompting yielding consistent gains across all traits and models. Discourse-level traits such as Development and Style showed the greatest improvements. These findings confirm that structured prompting, not model scale alone, enables effective AES in Arabic. Our study presents the first comprehensive framework for proficiency oriented Arabic AES and sets the foundation for scalable assessment in low resource educational contexts.

FreeTxt-Vi: A Benchmarked Vietnamese-English Toolkit for Segmentation, Sentiment, and Summarisation

FreeTxt-Vi is a free and open source web based toolkit for creating and analysing bilingual Vietnamese English text collections. Positioned at the intersection of corpus linguistics and natural language processing NLP it enables users to build explore and interpret free text data without requiring programming expertise. The system combines corpus analysis features such as concordancing keyword analysis word relation exploration and interactive visualisation with transformer based NLP components for sentiment analysis and summarisation. A key contribution of this work is the design of a unified bilingual NLP pipeline that integrates a hybrid VnCoreNLP and Byte Pair Encoding BPE segmentation strategy a fine tuned TabularisAI sentiment classifier and a fine tuned Qwen2.5 model for abstractive summarisation. Unlike existing text analysis platforms FreeTxt Vi is evaluated as a set of language processing components. We conduct a three part evaluation covering segmentation sentiment analysis and summarisation and show that our approach achieves competitive or superior performance compared to widely used baselines in both Vietnamese and English. By reducing technical barriers to multilingual text analysis FreeTxt Vi supports reproducible research and promotes the development of language resources for Vietnamese a widely spoken but underrepresented language in NLP. The toolkit is applicable to domains including education digital humanities cultural heritage and the social sciences where qualitative text data are common but often difficult to process at scale.

Creating a Hybrid Rule and Neural Network Based Semantic Tagger using Silver Standard Data: the PyMUSAS framework for Multilingual Semantic Annotation

Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) has been widely evaluated using the semantic frameworks of WordNet, BabelNet, and the Oxford Dictionary of English. However, for the UCREL Semantic Analysis System (USAS) framework, no open extensive evaluation has been performed beyond lexical coverage or single language evaluation. In this work, we perform the largest semantic tagging evaluation of the rule based system that uses the lexical resources in the USAS framework covering five different languages using four existing datasets and one novel Chinese dataset. We create a new silver labelled English dataset, to overcome the lack of manually tagged training data, that we train and evaluate various mono and multilingual neural models in both mono and cross-lingual evaluation setups with comparisons to their rule based counterparts, and show how a rule based system can be enhanced with a neural network model. The resulting neural network models, including the data they were trained on, the Chinese evaluation dataset, and all of the code have been released as open resources.

HealthcareNLP: where are we and what is next?

This proposed tutorial focuses on Healthcare Domain Applications of NLP, what we have achieved around HealthcareNLP, and the challenges that lie ahead for the future. Existing reviews in this domain either overlook some important tasks, such as synthetic data generation for addressing privacy concerns, or explainable clinical NLP for improved integration and implementation, or fail to mention important methodologies, including retrieval augmented generation and the neural symbolic integration of LLMs and KGs. In light of this, the goal of this tutorial is to provide an introductory overview of the most important sub-areas of a patient- and resource-oriented HealthcareNLP, with three layers of hierarchy: data/resource layer: annotation guidelines, ethical approvals, governance, synthetic data; NLP-Eval layer: NLP tasks such as NER, RE, sentiment analysis, and linking/coding with categorised methods, leading to explainable HealthAI; patients layer: Patient Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE), health literacy, translation, simplification, and summarisation (also NLP tasks), and shared decision-making support. A hands-on session will be included in the tutorial for the audience to use HealthcareNLP applications. The target audience includes NLP practitioners in the healthcare application domain, NLP researchers who are interested in domain applications, healthcare researchers, and students from NLP fields. AraFinNews: Arabic Financial Summarisation with Domain-Adapted LLMs

We introduce AraFinNews, the largest publicly available Arabic financial news dataset to date, comprising 212,500 article-headline pairs spanning a decade of reporting from 2015 to 2025. Designed as an Arabic counterpart to major English summarisation corpora such as CNN/DailyMail, AraFinNews provides a realistic benchmark for evaluating domain-specific language understanding and generation in financial contexts. Using this resource, we investigate the impact of domain specificity on abstractive summarisation of Arabic financial texts with large language models (LLMs). In particular, we evaluate transformer-based models: mT5, AraT5, and the domain-adapted FinAraT5 to examine how financial-domain pretraining influences accuracy, numerical reliability, and stylistic alignment with professional reporting. Experimental results show that domain-adapted models generate more coherent summaries, especially in their handling of quantitative and entity-centric information. These findings highlight the importance of domain-specific adaptation for improving narrative fluency in Arabic financial summarisation. Overview of the First Workshop on Language Models for Low-Resource Languages (LoResLM 2025)

The first Workshop on Language Models for Low-Resource Languages (LoResLM 2025) was held in conjunction with the 31st International Conference on Computational Linguistics (COLING 2025) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This workshop mainly aimed to provide a forum for researchers to share and discuss their ongoing work on language models (LMs) focusing on low-resource languages, following the recent advancements in neural language models and their linguistic biases towards high-resource languages. LoResLM 2025 attracted notable interest from the natural language processing (NLP) community, resulting in 35 accepted papers from 52 submissions. These contributions cover a broad range of low-resource languages from eight language families and 13 diverse research areas, paving the way for future possibilities and promoting linguistic inclusivity in NLP.

A Comparative Study on Automatic Coding of Medical Letters with Explainability

This study aims to explore the implementation of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) techniques to automate the coding of medical letters with visualised explainability and light-weighted local computer settings. Currently in clinical settings, coding is a manual process that involves assigning codes to each condition, procedure, and medication in a patient's paperwork (e.g., 56265001 heart disease using SNOMED CT code). There are preliminary research on automatic coding in this field using state-of-the-art ML models; however, due to the complexity and size of the models, the real-world deployment is not achieved. To further facilitate the possibility of automatic coding practice, we explore some solutions in a local computer setting; in addition, we explore the function of explainability for transparency of AI models. We used the publicly available MIMIC-III database and the HAN/HLAN network models for ICD code prediction purposes. We also experimented with the mapping between ICD and SNOMED CT knowledge bases. In our experiments, the models provided useful information for 97.98\% of codes. The IgboAPI Dataset: Empowering Igbo Language Technologies through Multi-dialectal Enrichment

The Igbo language is facing a risk of becoming endangered, as indicated by a 2025 UNESCO study. This highlights the need to develop language technologies for Igbo to foster communication, learning and preservation. To create robust, impactful, and widely adopted language technologies for Igbo, it is essential to incorporate the multi-dialectal nature of the language. The primary obstacle in achieving dialectal-aware language technologies is the lack of comprehensive dialectal datasets. In response, we present the IgboAPI dataset, a multi-dialectal Igbo-English dictionary dataset, developed with the aim of enhancing the representation of Igbo dialects. Furthermore, we illustrate the practicality of the IgboAPI dataset through two distinct studies: one focusing on Igbo semantic lexicon and the other on machine translation. In the semantic lexicon project, we successfully establish an initial Igbo semantic lexicon for the Igbo semantic tagger, while in the machine translation study, we demonstrate that by finetuning existing machine translation systems using the IgboAPI dataset, we significantly improve their ability to handle dialectal variations in sentences.

Understanding who uses Reddit: Profiling individuals with a self-reported bipolar disorder diagnosis

Recently, research on mental health conditions using public online data, including Reddit, has surged in NLP and health research but has not reported user characteristics, which are important to judge generalisability of findings. This paper shows how existing NLP methods can yield information on clinical, demographic, and identity characteristics of almost 20K Reddit users who self-report a bipolar disorder diagnosis. This population consists of slightly more feminine- than masculine-gendered mainly young or middle-aged US-based adults who often report additional mental health diagnoses, which is compared with general Reddit statistics and epidemiological studies. Additionally, this paper carefully evaluates all methods and discusses ethical issues.

MasakhaNER: Named Entity Recognition for African Languages

We take a step towards addressing the under-representation of the African continent in NLP research by creating the first large publicly available high-quality dataset for named entity recognition (NER) in ten African languages, bringing together a variety of stakeholders. We detail characteristics of the languages to help researchers understand the challenges that these languages pose for NER. We analyze our datasets and conduct an extensive empirical evaluation of state-of-the-art methods across both supervised and transfer learning settings. We release the data, code, and models in order to inspire future research on African NLP.

GIBBON: General-purpose Information-Based Bayesian OptimisatioN

This paper describes a general-purpose extension of max-value entropy search, a popular approach for Bayesian Optimisation (BO). A novel approximation is proposed for the information gain -- an information-theoretic quantity central to solving a range of BO problems, including noisy, multi-fidelity and batch optimisations across both continuous and highly-structured discrete spaces. Previously, these problems have been tackled separately within information-theoretic BO, each requiring a different sophisticated approximation scheme, except for batch BO, for which no computationally-lightweight information-theoretic approach has previously been proposed. GIBBON (General-purpose Information-Based Bayesian OptimisatioN) provides a single principled framework suitable for all the above, out-performing existing approaches whilst incurring substantially lower computational overheads. In addition, GIBBON does not require the problem's search space to be Euclidean and so is the first high-performance yet computationally light-weight acquisition function that supports batch BO over general highly structured input spaces like molecular search and gene design. Moreover, our principled derivation of GIBBON yields a natural interpretation of a popular batch BO heuristic based on determinantal point processes. Finally, we analyse GIBBON across a suite of synthetic benchmark tasks, a molecular search loop, and as part of a challenging batch multi-fidelity framework for problems with controllable experimental noise.

The National Corpus of Contemporary Welsh: Project Report | Y Corpws Cenedlaethol Cymraeg Cyfoes: Adroddiad y Prosiect

This report provides an overview of the CorCenCC project and the online corpus resource that was developed as a result of work on the project. The report lays out the theoretical underpinnings of the research, demonstrating how the project has built on and extended this theory. We also raise and discuss some of the key operational questions that arose during the course of the project, outlining the ways in which they were answered, the impact of these decisions on the resource that has been produced and the longer-term contribution they will make to practices in corpus-building. Finally, we discuss some of the applications and the utility of the work, outlining the impact that CorCenCC is set to have on a range of different individuals and user groups.

BOSS: Bayesian Optimization over String Spaces

This article develops a Bayesian optimization (BO) method which acts directly over raw strings, proposing the first uses of string kernels and genetic algorithms within BO loops. Recent applications of BO over strings have been hindered by the need to map inputs into a smooth and unconstrained latent space. Learning this projection is computationally and data-intensive. Our approach instead builds a powerful Gaussian process surrogate model based on string kernels, naturally supporting variable length inputs, and performs efficient acquisition function maximization for spaces with syntactical constraints. Experiments demonstrate considerably improved optimization over existing approaches across a broad range of constraints, including the popular setting where syntax is governed by a context-free grammar.

BOSH: Bayesian Optimization by Sampling Hierarchically

Deployments of Bayesian Optimization (BO) for functions with stochastic evaluations, such as parameter tuning via cross validation and simulation optimization, typically optimize an average of a fixed set of noisy realizations of the objective function. However, disregarding the true objective function in this manner finds a high-precision optimum of the wrong function. To solve this problem, we propose Bayesian Optimization by Sampling Hierarchically (BOSH), a novel BO routine pairing a hierarchical Gaussian process with an information-theoretic framework to generate a growing pool of realizations as the optimization progresses. We demonstrate that BOSH provides more efficient and higher-precision optimization than standard BO across synthetic benchmarks, simulation optimization, reinforcement learning and hyper-parameter tuning tasks.

MUMBO: MUlti-task Max-value Bayesian Optimization

We propose MUMBO, the first high-performing yet computationally efficient acquisition function for multi-task Bayesian optimization. Here, the challenge is to perform efficient optimization by evaluating low-cost functions somehow related to our true target function. This is a broad class of problems including the popular task of multi-fidelity optimization. However, while information-theoretic acquisition functions are known to provide state-of-the-art Bayesian optimization, existing implementations for multi-task scenarios have prohibitive computational requirements. Previous acquisition functions have therefore been suitable only for problems with both low-dimensional parameter spaces and function query costs sufficiently large to overshadow very significant optimization overheads. In this work, we derive a novel multi-task version of entropy search, delivering robust performance with low computational overheads across classic optimization challenges and multi-task hyper-parameter tuning. MUMBO is scalable and efficient, allowing multi-task Bayesian optimization to be deployed in problems with rich parameter and fidelity spaces.

Igbo-English Machine Translation: An Evaluation Benchmark

Although researchers and practitioners are pushing the boundaries and enhancing the capacities of NLP tools and methods, works on African languages are lagging. A lot of focus on well resourced languages such as English, Japanese, German, French, Russian, Mandarin Chinese etc. Over 97% of the world's 7000 languages, including African languages, are low resourced for NLP i.e. they have little or no data, tools, and techniques for NLP research. For instance, only 5 out of 2965, 0.19% authors of full text papers in the ACL Anthology extracted from the 5 major conferences in 2018 ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, COLING and CoNLL, are affiliated to African institutions. In this work, we discuss our effort toward building a standard machine translation benchmark dataset for Igbo, one of the 3 major Nigerian languages. Igbo is spoken by more than 50 million people globally with over 50% of the speakers are in southeastern Nigeria. Igbo is low resourced although there have been some efforts toward developing IgboNLP such as part of speech tagging and diacritic restoration
