The equivariant pair-of-pants product in fixed point Floer cohomology

The Floer cohomology of a symplectic automorphism and that of its square are related by the pair-of-pants product. For exact symplectic automorphisms, we introduce an equivariant version of that product, and use it to prove a Smith-type inequality of ranks between Floer cohomology groups. Under additional topological assumptions, the same inequality was previously proved by Hendricks, using a different strategy.

Lefschetz fibrations and exotic symplectic structures on cotangent bundles of spheres; includes Corrigendum

We construct open symplectic manifolds which are convex at infinity ("Liouville manifolds") and which are diffeomorphic, but not symplectically isomorphic, to cotangent bundles T^*S^{n+1}, for any n+1 \geq 3. These manifolds are constructed as total spaces of Lefschetz fibrations, where the fibre and all but one of the vanishing cycles are fixed. We show that almost any choice of the last vanishing cycle leads to a nonstandard symplectic structure (those choices which yield standard T^*S^{n+1} can be exactly determined). The Corrigendum changes the statement and proof of Lemma 1.1 in the original paper, which corrects our original description of the diffeomorphism type of the manifolds. We also fill a gap in the original proof of Lemma 1.2.

Exotic iterated Dehn twists

Consider cotangent bundles of exotic spheres, with their canonical symplectic structure. They admit automorphisms which preserve the part at infinity of one fibre, and which are analogous to the square of a Dehn twist. Pursuing that analogy, we show that they have infinite order up to isotopy (inside the group of all automorphisms with the same behaviour).

Abstract analogues of flux as symplectic invariants

We study families of objects in Fukaya categories, specifically ones whose deformation behaviour is prescribed by the choice of an odd degree cohomology class. This leads to invariants of symplectic manifolds, which we apply to blowups along symplectic mapping tori.

Disjoinable Lagrangian spheres and dilations

We consider open symplectic manifolds which admit dilations (in the sense previously introduced by Solomon and the author). We obtain restrictions on collections of Lagrangian submanifolds which are pairwise disjoint (or pairwise disjoinable by Hamiltonian isotopies) inside such manifolds. This includes the Milnor fibres of isolated hypersurface singularities which have been stabilized (by adding quadratic terms) sufficiently often.

Bicrystalline Grain Boundary and Hybrid SNS Junctions Based on Ba-122 Thin Films

To investigate the properties of iron-based superconductors, we examined different kinds of Josephson junctions using Co-doped Ba-122 thin films. Based on bicrystalline SrTiO3 substrates we prepared grain boundary (GB) junctions, which showed clear Josephson effects. We present electrical measurements at varying temperatures and magnetic fields. Furthermore, we prepared hybrid junctions using thin film technique. Confined by a Ba-122 base electrode (S) and a PbIn counter electrode (S') two different geometries of hybrid junctions are formed: a planar SNS' junction with a gold barrier (N) in between and an edge-type junction with an interface-engineered barrier. All three kinds of junctions showed asymmetric resistively shunted junction-like (RSJ) behavior with ICRN products of 20.2 /mu V (GB junctions), 18.4 /mu V (planar SNS' junctions) and 12.3 /mu V (edge-type junctions), respectively. An excess current could be observed at all junctions.

Lagrangian homology spheres in (A_m) Milnor fibres via C^*-equivariant A_infinity modules

We establish restrictions on Lagrangian embeddings of rational homology spheres into certain open symplectic manifolds, namely the (A_m) Milnor fibres of odd complex dimension. This relies on general considerations about equivariant objects in module categories (which may be applicable in other situations as well), as well as results of Ishii-Uehara and Ishii-Ueda-Uehara concerning the derived categories of coherent sheaves on the resolutions of (A_m) surface singularities.

Symplectic cohomology and q-intersection numbers

Given a symplectic cohomology class of degree 1, we define the notion of an equivariant Lagrangian submanifold. The Floer cohomology of equivariant Lagrangian submanifolds has a natural endomorphism, which induces a grading by generalized eigenspaces. Taking Euler characteristics with respect to the induced grading yields a deformation of the intersection number. Dehn twists act naturally on equivariant Lagrangians. Cotangent bundles and Lefschetz fibrations give fully computable examples. A key step in computations is to impose the "dilation" condition stipulating that the BV operator applied to the symplectic cohomology class gives the identity. Equivariant Lagrangians mirror equivariant objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves.

Some speculations on pairs-of-pants decompositions and Fukaya categories

These are notes from a 2010 talk. They concern possible ways in which Fukaya categories might be considered as "local", which means glued together from simpler pieces in a loosely sheaf-theoretic sense. As the title suggests, this is purely speculative. Much of the motivation comes from tropical geometry and mirror symmetry.

Homological mirror symmetry for the genus two curve

Katzarkov has proposed a generalization of Kontsevich's mirror symmetry conjecture, covering some varieties of general type. We prove a version of this conjecture in the simplest example, relating the Fukaya category of a genus two curve to the category of Landau-Ginzburg branes on a certain singular rational surface.

Localization for involutions in Floer cohomology

We consider Lagrangian Floer cohomology for a pair of Lagrangian submanifolds in a symplectic manifold M. Suppose that M carries a symplectic involution, which preserves both submanifolds. Under various topological hypotheses, we prove a localization theorem for Floer cohomology, which implies a Smith-type inequality for the Floer cohomology groups in M and its fixed point set. Two applications to symplectic Khovanov cohomology are included.

Altering symplectic manifolds by homologous recombination

We use symplectic cohomology to study the non-uniqueness of symplectic structures on the smooth manifolds underlying affine varieties. Starting with a Lefschetz fibration on such a variety and a finite set of primes, the main new tool is a method, which we call homologous recombination, for constructing a Lefschetz fibration whose total space is smoothly equivalent to the original variety, but for which symplectic cohomology with coefficients in the given set of primes vanishes (there is also a simpler version that kills symplectic cohomology completely). Rather than relying on a geometric analysis of periodic orbits of a flow, the computation of symplectic cohomology depends on describing the Fukaya category associated to the new fibration. As a consequence of this and a result of McLean we prove, for example, that an affine variety of real dimension greater than 4 supports infinitely many different (Wein)stein structures of finite type, and, assuming a mild cohomological condition, uncountably many different ones of infinite type. In addition, we introduce a notion of complexity which measures the number of handle attachments required to construct a given Weinstein manifold, and prove that, in dimensions greater than or equal to 12, one may ensure that the infinitely many different Weinstein manifolds smoothly equivalent to a given algebraic variety have bounded complexity.

A biased view of symplectic cohomology

These are lecture notes from my talks at the "Current Developments in Mathematics" conference (Harvard, 2006). They cover a variety of topics involving symplectic cohomology. In particular, a discussion of (algorithmic) classification issues in symplectic and contact topology is included.

An open string analogue of Viterbo functoriality

Liouville domains are a special type of symplectic manifolds with boundary (they have an everywhere defined Liouville flow, pointing outwards along the boundary). Symplectic cohomology for Liouville domains was introduced by Cieliebak-Floer-Hofer-Wysocki and Vitero. The latter constructed a restriction (or transfer) map associated to an embedding of one Liouville domain into another. In this preprint, we look at exact Lagrangian submanifolds with Legendrian boundary inside a Liouville domain. The analogue of symplectic cohomology for such submanifolds is called "wrapped Floer cohomology". We construct an A_\infty-structure on the underlying wrapped Floer complex, and (under suitable assumptions) an A_\infty-homomorphism realizing the restriction to a Liouville subdomain. The construction of the A_\infty-structure relies on an implementation of homotopy direct limits, and involves some new moduli spaces which are solutions of generalized continuation map equations.

Suspending Lefschetz fibrations, with an application to Local Mirror Symmetry

We consider the suspension operation on Lefschetz fibrations, which takes p(x) to p(x)-y^2. This leaves the Fukaya category of the fibration invariant, and changes the category of the fibre (or more precisely, the subcategory consisting of a basis of vanishing cycles) in a specific way. As an application, we prove part of Homological Mirror Symmetry for the total spaces of canonical bundles over toric del Pezzo surfaces.

A_\infty-subalgebras and natural transformations

The paper explores some algebraic constructions arising in the theory of Lefschetz fibrations. Specifically, it covers in a fair amount of detail the algebraic issues outlined in ``Symplectic homology as Hochschild homology'' (math.SG/0609037). We also explain how the theory works when applied to a simple example, namely the Landau-Ginzburg mirror of P^2. Version 2: revised, many technical assumptions dropped, statement of one of the main results improved by using dg quotients. I changed the title accordingly.
