Waterproofed Photomultiplier Tube Assemblies for the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

In the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment 960 20-cm-diameter waterproof photomultiplier tubes are used to instrument three water pools as Cherenkov detectors for detecting cosmic-ray muons. Of these 960 photomultiplier tubes, 341 are recycled from the MACRO experiment. A systematic program was undertaken to refurbish them as waterproof assemblies. In the context of passing the water leakage check, a success rate better than 97% was achieved. Details of the design, fabrication, testing, operation, and performance of these waterproofed photomultiplier-tube assemblies are presented.

We review the current experimental situation of pentaquark searches, and second generation experiments, with emphasis on the Jefferson Lab program.

Prediction of Neutron Elastic Form Factors Using GPDs from Proton Elastic Form Factors and Isospin Symmetry

The elastic neutron form factors $G_{En}$ and $G_{Mn}$ are calculated in a GPD framework using GPDs obtained from fits to proton elastic form factors $G_{Ep}$ and $G_{Mp}$, and isospin symmetry, with no further changes in parameters. The results for $G_{En}$ are in good agreement with existing data, while those for $G_{Mn}$ are fair. The calculations predict the form factors for future measurements at higher $Q^2$.

Baryon Form Factors at High Momentum Transfer and GPD's

Nucleon elastic and transition form factors at high momentum transfer -t are treated in terms of generalized parton distributions in a two-body framework. In this framework the high -t dependence of the form factors give information about the high k_perp, or short distance b_perp correlations of nucleon model wave functions. Applications are made to elastic and resonance nucleon form factors, and real Compton Scattering.

Hadronic Form Factors and Perturbative QCD

The electromagnetic form factors of hadrons at large momentum transfer have been the subject of intense theoretical and experimental scrutiny over the past two decades, yet there is still not a universally-accepted framework for their description. This review is a synopsis of their current status at large momentum transfer. The basic theoretical approaches to form factors at large momentum transfer are developed, emphasizing the valence quark and Feynman (soft) pictures. The discussion includes the relation of these descriptions to the parton model, as well as the roles of factorization, evolution, Sudakov resummation and QCD sum rules. This is followed by a discussion of the experimental status of pion and nucleon elastic form factors and resonance production amplitudes in the light of recent data, highlighting the successes and shortcomings of various theoretical proposals.
