Limits of descent-biased trees

We investigate scaling and local limits of random trees biased according to their number of descents. A descent in a rooted labeled tree $t$ is a parent-child pair such that the label of the parent is greater than the label of the child, and the total number of descents is denoted by $\mathrm{des}(t)$. For $n \geq 1$ and $q_n \geq 0$, we consider the probability measure on trees of size $n$ where each tree $t$ is chosen with a probability proportional to $q_n^{\mathrm{des}(t)}$. We study the resulting random tree $\mathcal{T}_n^{(q_n)}$ properly rescaled as $n \to \infty$, and focus on two regimes for the bias parameter $q_n$. When $q_n = q \in (0,1]$ is fixed, we prove that $\mathcal{T}_n^{(q)}$ converges in distribution to the Brownian Continuum Random Tree. When $q_n = a/n$ for some fixed $a > 0$, we prove that $\mathcal{T}_n^{(q_n)}$ converges in distribution to a random non-trivial dendron constructed from a Poisson-Dirichlet sequence. We complement these results with a description of the Benjamini-Schramm local limit of $\mathcal{T}_n^{(q_n)}$ in all regimes of parameters. Our proofs rely on analytic combinatorics to find the asymptotics of certain statistics of the tree, and on a probabilistic analysis of the structure of descent-biased random trees.

Tree-indexed sums of Catalan numbers

We consider a family of infinite sums of products of Catalan numbers, indexed by trees. We show that these sums are polynomials in $1/π$ with rational coefficients; the proof is effective and provides an algorithm to explicitly compute these sums. Along the way we introduce parametric liftings of our sums, and show that they are polynomials in the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kind. Moreover, the degrees of these polynomials are at most half of the number of vertices of the tree. The computation of these tree-indexed sums is motivated by the study of large meandric systems, which are non-crossing configurations of loops in the plane.

Stretched exponential asymptotics for bases of triangular bootstrap percolation

In this paper, we study a bootstrap percolation process on the finite triangular grid $\mathfrak{T}_n$ of side length $n$. We say that a subset $η$ of points in $\mathfrak{T}_n$ percolates if the final configuration, starting from $η$, is the whole grid $\mathfrak{T}_n$. A basis of size $n$ is then a subset of points of $\mathfrak{T}_n$ of minimum cardinality which percolates. In this paper, we first prove that the generating function counting bases satisfies an algebraic differential equation. Then, by analysing a modified version of this equation, we prove that the number $t_n$ of bases of size $n$ exhibits a stretched exponential asymptotic behaviour. More precisely, we show that $t_n \sim c n!e^{\sqrt{12n}}n^{5/12}$, for some constant $c>0$. These bases were recently shown by the second author to be in bijection with $3$-permutations avoiding the patterns $(12, 12)$ and $(231, 312)$, so this represents to our knowledge the first proven example of an asymptotic stretched exponential appearing in the study of pattern avoiding permutations.

Scaling limits of multitype Bienaymé trees

We consider critical multitype Bienaymé trees that are either irreducible or possess a critical irreducible component with attached subcritical components. These trees are studied under two distinct conditioning frameworks: first, conditioning on the value of a linear combination of the numbers of vertices of given types; and second, conditioning on the precise number of vertices belonging to a selected subset of types. We prove that, under a finite exponential moment condition, the scaling limit as the tree size tends to infinity is given by the Brownian Continuum Random Tree. Additionally, we establish strong nonasymptotic tail bounds for the height of such trees. Our main tools include a flattening operation applied to multitype trees and sharp estimates regarding the structure of monotype trees with a given sequence of degrees.

Convergence of trees with a given degree sequence and of their associated laminations

In this paper, we study uniform rooted plane trees with given degree sequence. We show, under some natural hypotheses on the degree sequence, that these trees converge toward the so-called Inhomogeneous Continuum Random Tree after renormalisation. Our proof relies on the convergence of a modification of the well-known Lukasiewicz path. We also give a unified treatment of the limit, as the number of vertices tends to infinity, of the fragmentation process derived by cutting-down the edges of a tree with a given degree sequence, including its geometric representation by a lamination-valued process. The latter is a collection of nested laminations that are compact subsets of the unit disk made of non-crossing chords. In particular, we prove an equivalence between Gromov-weak convergence of discrete trees and the convergence of their associated lamination-valued processes.

Sharp character bounds and cutoff for symmetric groups

We develop a flexible technique to bound the characters of symmetric groups, via the Naruse hook length formula, the Larsen--Shalev character bounds, and appropriate diagram slicings. It allows us to prove a uniform exponential character bound with optimal constant $1/2$. We furthermore prove sharp character bounds for conjugacy classes having a macroscopic number of fixed points, and deduce that the random walks on the associated Cayley graphs exhibit a total variation and $L^2$ cutoff.

Existence of critical tiltings and local limits of general size-conditioned Bienaymé-Galton-Watson multitype trees

We are interested in the structure of multitype Bienaymé-Galton-Watson (BGW) trees conditioned on integer linear combinations of the numbers of vertices of given types. We show that, under regularity assumptions on the offspring distributions, it is always possible to find a critical BGW tree having the same conditional distribution. This allows us to prove the existence of local limits for noncritical BGW trees, under a large variety of conditionings. Our proof is based on geometric considerations on the set of the so-called exponential tiltings of a family of offspring distributions.

Concatenating Random Matchings

We consider the concatenation of $t$ uniformly random perfect matchings on $2n$ vertices, where the operation of concatenation is inspired by the multiplication of generators of the Brauer algebra $\mathfrak{B}_n(δ)$. For the resulting random string diagram $\mathsf{Br}_n(t)$, we observe a giant component if and only if $n$ is odd, and as $t\to\infty$ we obtain asymptotic results concerning the number of loops, the size of the giant component, and the number of loops of a given shape. Moreover, we give a local description of the giant component. These results mainly rely on the use of renewal theory and the coding of connected components of $\mathsf{Br}_n(t)$ by random vertex-exploration processes.

Coupling Bertoin's and Aldous-Pitman's representations of the additive coalescent

We construct a coupling between two seemingly very different constructions of the standard additive coalescent, which describes the evolution of masses merging pairwise at rates proportional to their sums. The first construction, due to Aldous \& Pitman, involves the components obtained by logging the Brownian Continuum Random Tree (CRT) by a Poissonian rain on its skeleton as time increases. The second one, due to Bertoin, involves the excursions above its running infimum of a linear-drifted standard Brownian excursion as its drift decreases. Our main tool is the use of an exploration algorithm of the so-called cut-tree of the Brownian CRT, which is a tree that encodes the genealogy of the fragmentation of the CRT.

Local limits of descent-biased permutations and trees

We study two related probabilistic models of permutations and trees biased by their number of descents. Here, a descent in a permutation $σ$ is a pair of consecutive elements $σ(i), σ(i+1)$ such that $σ(i) > σ(i+1)$. Likewise, a descent in a rooted tree with labelled vertices is a pair of a parent vertex and a child such that the label of the parent is greater than the label of the child. For some nonnegative real number $q$, we consider the probability measures on permutations and on rooted labelled trees of a given size where each permutation or tree is chosen with a probability proportional to $q^{\text{number of descents}}$. In particular, we determine the asymptotic distribution of the first elements of permutations under this model. Different phases can be observed based on how $q$ depends on the number of elements $n$ in our permutations. The results on permutations then allow us to characterize the local limit of descent-biased rooted labelled trees.

Components in meandric systems and the infinite noodle

We investigate here the asymptotic behaviour of a large typical meandric system. More precisely, we show the quenched local convergence of a random uniform meandric system $M_n$ on $2n$ points, as $n \rightarrow \infty$, towards the infinite noodle introduced by Curien, Kozma, Sidoravicius and Tournier ({\em Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré D}, {6}(2):221--238, 2019). As a consequence, denoting by $cc( M_n)$ the number of connected components of $ M_n$, we prove the convergence in probability of $cc(M_n)/n$ to some constant $κ$, answering a question raised independently by Goulden--Nica--Puder ({\em Int. Math. Res. Not.}, 2020(4):983--1034, 2020) and Kargin ({\em Journal of Statistical Physics}, 181(6):2322--2345, 2020). This result also provides information on the asymptotic geometry of the Hasse diagram of the lattice of non-crossing partitions. Finally, we obtain expressions of the constant $κ$ as infinite sums over meanders, which allows us to compute upper and lower approximations of $κ$.

Critical exponential tiltings for size-conditioned multitype Bienaymé--Galton--Watson trees

We consider here multitype Bienaymé--Galton--Watson trees, under the conditioning that the numbers of vertices of given type satisfy some linear relations. We prove that, under some smoothness conditions on the offspring distribution $\mathbfζ$, there exists a critical offspring distribution $\tilde{\mathbfζ}$ such that the trees with offspring distribution $\mathbfζ$ and $\tilde{\mathbfζ}$ have the same law under our conditioning. This allows us in a second time to characterize the local limit of such trees, as their size goes to infinity. Our main tool is a notion of exponential tilting for multitype Bienaymé--Galton--Watson trees.

Central limit theorem for components in meandric systems through high moments

We investigate here the behaviour of a large typical meandric system, proving a central limit theorem for the number of components of given shape. Our main tool is a theorem of Gao and Wormald, that allows us to deduce a central limit theorem from the asymptotics of large moments of our quantities of interest.

Points and lines configurations for perpendicular bisectors of convex cyclic polygons

We characterize the topological configurations of points and lines that may arise when placing n points on a circle and drawing the n perpendicular bisectors of the sides of the corresponding convex cyclic n-gon. We also provide exact and asymptotic formulas describing a random realizable configuration, obtained either by sampling the points uniformly at random on the circle or by sampling a realizable configuration uniformly at random.

Cube moves for $s$-embeddings and $α$-realizations

Chelkak introduced $s$-embeddings as tilings by tangential quads which provide the right setting to study the Ising model with arbitrary coupling constants on arbitrary planar graphs. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a local transformation for $s$-embeddings called the cube move, which consists in flipping three quadrilaterals in such a way that the resulting tiling is also in the class of $s$-embeddings. In passing, we give a new and simpler formula for the change in coupling constants for the Ising star-triangle transformation which is conjugated to the cube move for $s$-embeddings. We introduce more generally the class of $α$-embeddings as tilings of a portion of the plane by quadrilaterals such that the side lengths of each quadrilateral $ABCD$ satisfy the relation $AB^α+CD^α=AD^α+BC^α$, providing a common generalization for harmonic embeddings adapted to the study of resistor networks ($α=2$) and for $s$-embeddings ($α=1$). We investigate existence and uniqueness properties of the cube move for these $α$-embeddings.

Random generation and scaling limits of fixed genus factorizations into transpositions

We study the asymptotic behaviour of random factorizations of the $n$-cycle into transpositions of fixed genus $g>0$. They have a geometric interpretation as branched covers of the sphere and their enumeration as Hurwitz numbers was extensively studied in algebraic combinatorics and enumerative geometry. On the probabilistic side, several models and properties of permutation factorizations were studied in previous works, in particular minimal factorizations of cycles into transpositions (which corresponds to the case $g=0$ of this work). Using the representation of factorizations via unicellular maps, we first exhibit an algorithm which samples an asymptotically uniform factorization of genus $g$ in linear time. In a second time, we code a factorization as a process of chords appearing one by one in the unit disk, and we prove the convergence (as $n\to\infty$) of the process associated with a uniform genus $g$ factorization of the $n$-cycle. The limit process can be explicitly constructed from a Brownian excursion. Finally, we establish the convergence of a natural genus process, coding the appearance of the successive genera in the factorization.

Vertices with fixed outdegrees in large Galton-Watson trees

We are interested in nodes with fixed outdegrees in large conditioned Galton--Watson trees. We first study the scaling limits of processes coding the evolution of the number of such nodes in different explorations of the tree (lexicographical order and contour order) starting from the root. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the limiting processes to be centered, thus measuring the linearity defect of the evolution of the number of nodes with fixed outdegrees. This extends results by Labarbe & Marckert in the case of the contour-ordered counting process of leaves in uniform plane trees. Then, we extend results obtained by Janson concerning the asymptotic normality of the number of nodes with fixed outdegrees.
