Avoiding closed timelike curves with a collapsing rotating null dust shell

We present an idealised model of gravitational collapse, describing a collapsing rotating cylindrical shell of null dust in flat space, with the metric of a spinning cosmic string as the exterior. We find that the shell bounces before closed timelike curves can be formed. Our results also suggest slightly different definitions for the mass and angular momentum of the string.

An angular momentum bound at null infinity

We prove an inequality relating the trace of the extrinsic curvature, the total angular momentum, the centre of mass, and the Trautman-Bondi mass for a class of gravitational initial data sets with constant mean curvature extending to null infinity. As an application we obtain non-existence results for the asymptotic Dirichlet problem for CMC hypersurfaces in stationary space-times.

Isotropic cosmological singularities in spatially-homogeneous models with a cosmological constant

We prove well-posedness of the initial value problem for the Einstein equations for spatially-homogeneous cosmologies with data at an isotropic cosmological singularity, for which the matter content is either a cosmological constant with collisionless particles of a single mass (possibly zero) or a cosmological constant with a perfect fluid having the radiation equation of state. In both cases, with a positive cosmological constant, these solutions, except possibly for Bianchi-type-IX, will expand forever, and be geodesically-complete into the future.

Lanczos potentials and a definition of gravitational entropy for perturbed FLRW space-times

We give a prescription for constructing a Lanczos potential for a cosmological model which is a purely gravitational perturbation of a Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker space-time. For the radiation equation of state, we find the Lanczos potential explicitly via Fourier transforms. As an application, we follow up a suggestion of Penrose and propose a definition of gravitational entropy for these cosmologies. With this definition, the gravitational entropy initially is finite if and only if the initial Weyl tensor is finite.

The classification of static electro--vacuum space--times containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior

We show that static electro--vacuum black hole space--times containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and with both degenerate and non--degenerate components of the event horizon do not exist. This is done by a careful study of the near-horizon geometry of degenerate horizons, which allows us to eliminate the last restriction of the static electro-vacuum no-hair theory.

Rigid upper bounds for the angular momentum and centre of mass of non-singular asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times

We prove upper bounds on angular momentum and centre of mass in terms of the Hamiltonian mass and cosmological constant for non-singular asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets satisfying the dominant energy condition. We work in all space-dimensions larger than or equal to three, and allow a large class of asymptotic backgrounds, with spherical and non-spherical conformal infinities; in the latter case, a spin-structure compatibility condition is imposed. We give a large class of non-trivial examples saturating the inequality. We analyse exhaustively the borderline case in space-time dimension four: for spherical cross-sections of Scri, equality together with completeness occurs only in anti-de Sitter space-time. On the other hand, in the toroidal case, regular non-trivial initial data sets saturating the bound exist.

Conditions for nonexistence of static or stationary, Einstein-Maxwell, non-inheriting black-holes

We consider asymptotically-flat, static and stationary solutions of the Einstein equations representing Einstein-Maxwell space-times in which the Maxwell field is not constant along the Killing vector defining stationarity, so that the symmetry of the space-time is not inherited by the electromagnetic field. We find that static degenerate black hole solutions are not possible and, subject to stronger assumptions, nor are static, non-degenerate or stationary black holes. We describe the possibilities if the stronger assumptions are relaxed.

A Note on Riemannian Anti-self-dual Einstein metrics with Symmetry

We give a complete proof of the result stated in an earlier article, that the general Einstein metric with a symmetry, an anti-self-dual Weyl tensor and nonzero scalar curvature is determined by a solution of the $SU(\infty)$-Toda field equation. We consider the two canonical forms found for solutions to the same problem by Przanowski (J.Math.Phys. 32(1991) 1004-1010) and show that his Class A will reduce to the Toda equation with respect to a second complex structure, different from that in which the metric is first given.

Paraconformal geometry of $n$th order ODEs, and exotic holonomy in dimension four

We characterise $n$th order ODEs for which the space of solutions $M$ is equipped with a particular paraconformal structure in the sense of \cite{BE}, that is a splitting of the tangent bundle as a symmetric tensor product of rank-two vector bundles. This leads to the vanishing of $(n-2)$ quantities constructed from of the ODE. If $n=4$ the paraconformal structure is shown to be equivalent to the exotic ${\cal G}_3$ holonomy of Bryant. If $n=4$, or $n\geq 6$ and $M$ admits a torsion--free connection compatible with the paraconformal structure then the ODE is trivialisable by point or contact transformations respectively. If $n=2$ or 3 $M$ admits an affine paraconformal connection with no torsion. In these cases additional constraints can be imposed on the ODE so that $M$ admits a projective structure if $n=2$, or an Einstein--Weyl structure if $n=3$. The third order ODE can in this case be reconstructed from the Einstein--Weyl data.

A note on static metrics

Conditions are given which, subject to a genericity condition on the Ricci tensor, are both necessary and sufficient for a 3-metric to arise from a static spacetime metric.

Lie point symmetries and the geodesic approximation for the Schrödinger-Newton equations

We consider two problems arising in the study of the Schrödinger-Newton equations. The first is to find their Lie point symmetries. The second, as an application of the first, is to investigate an approximate solution corresponding to widely separated lumps of probability. The lumps are found to move like point particles under a mutual inverse-square law of attraction.

Matching of spatially homogeneous non-stationary space--times to vacuum in cylindrical symmetry

We study the matching of LRS spatially homogeneous collapsing dust space-times with non-stationary vacuum exteriors in cylindrical symmetry. Given an interior with diagonal metric we prove existence and uniqueness results for the exterior. The matched solutions contain trapped surfaces, singularities and Cauchy horizons. The solutions cannot be asymptotically flat and we present evidence that they are singular on the Cauchy horizons.

Linking, Legendrian linking and causality

The set N of all null geodesics of a globally hyperbolic (d+1)-dimensional spacetime (M,g) is naturally a smooth (2d-1)-dimensional contact manifold. The sky of an event is the subset of N defined by all null geodesics through that event, and is an embedded Legendrian submanifold of N diffeomorphic to a (d-1)-dimensional sphere. It was conjectured by Low that for d=2 two events are causally related iff their skies are linked (in an appropriate sense). We use the contact structure and knot polynomial calculations to prove this conjecture in certain particular cases, and suggest that for d=3 smooth linking should be replaced with Legendrian linking.

Einstein--Weyl spaces and dispersionless Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation from Painlevé I and II

We present two constructions of new solutions to the dispersionless KP (dKP) equation arising from the first two Painlevé transcendents. The first construction is a hodograph transformation based on Einstein--Weyl geometry, the generalised Nahm's equation and the isomonodromy problem. The second construction, motivated by the first, is a direct characterisation of solutions to dKP which are constant on a central quadric. We show how the solutions to the dKP equations can be used to construct some three-dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures, and four--dimensional anti-self-dual null-Kähler metrics.

Einstein-Weyl geometry, the dKP equation and twistor theory

It is shown that Einstein-Weyl (EW) equations in 2+1 dimensions contain the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation as a special case: If an EW structure admits a constant weighted vector then it is locally given by $h=d y^2-4d xd t-4ud t^2, ν=-4u_xd t$, where $u=u(x, y, t)$ satisfies the dKP equation $(u_t-uu_x)_x=u_{yy}$. Linearised solutions to the dKP equation are shown to give rise to four-dimensional anti-self-dual conformal structures with symmetries. All four-dimensional hyper-Kähler metrics in signature $(++--)$ for which the self-dual part of the derivative of a Killing vector is null arise by this construction. Two new classes of examples of EW metrics which depend on one arbitrary function of one variable are given, and characterised. A Lax representation of the EW condition is found and used to show that all EW spaces arise as symmetry reductions of hyper-Hermitian metrics in four dimensions. The EW equations are reformulated in terms of a simple and closed two-form on the $\CP^1$-bundle over a Weyl space. It is proved that complex solutions to the dKP equations, modulo a certain coordinate freedom, are in a one-to-one correspondence with minitwistor spaces (two-dimensional complex manifolds ${\cal Z}$ containing a rational curve with normal bundle $Ø(2)$) that admit a section of $κ^{-1/4}$, where $κ$ is the canonical bundle of ${\cal Z}$. Real solutions are obtained if the minitwistor space also admits an anti-holomorphic involution with fixed points together with a rational curve and section of $κ^{-1/4}$ that are invariant under the involution.

Einstein metrics, hypercomplex structures and the Toda field equation

We obtain explicitly all solutions of the SU(infinity) Toda field equation with the property that the associated Einstein-Weyl space admits a 2-sphere of divergence-free shear-free geodesic congruences. The solutions depend on an arbitrary holomorphic function and give rise to new hyperKahler and selfdual Einstein metrics with one dimensional isometry group. These metrics each admit a compatible hypercomplex structure with respect to which the symmetries are triholomorphic.
