Connexions with totally skew-symmetric torsion and nearly-Kaehler geometry

We study almost Hermitian structures admitting a Hermitian connexion with totally skew-symmetric torsion or equivalently, those almost Hermitian structures with totally skew-symmetric Nijenhuis tensor. We investigate up to what extent the Nijenhuis tensor fails to be parallel with respect to the characteristic connexion. This is naturally described by means of an extension of the notion of Killing form to almost Hermitian geometry. In this context, we also make an essentially self-contained survey of nearly-Kaehler geometry, but from the perspective of non-integrable holonomy systems.

Deformations of Nearly Kähler Structures

We study the space of nearly Kähler structures on compact 6-dimensional manifolds. In particular, we prove that the space of infinitesimal deformations of a strictly nearly Kähler structure (with scalar curvature scal) modulo the group of diffeomorphisms, is isomorphic to the space of primitive co-closed (1,1)-eigenforms of the Laplace operator for the eigenvalue 2scal/5.

Four dimensional conformal C-spaces

We investigate the structure of conformal $C$-spaces,a class of Riemmanian manifolds which naturally arises as aconformal generalisation of the Einstein condition. A basic question is when such a structure is closed, or equivalently locally conformally Cotton. In dimension 4 we obtain a full answer to this question and also investigate the incidence of the Bach condition on this class of metrics. This is related to earlier results obtained in the Einstein-Weyl context.

On algebraic torsion forms and their spin holonomy algebras

We study holonomy algebras generated by an algebraic element of the Clifford algebra, or equivalently, the holonomy algebras of certain spin connections in flat space. We provide series of examples in arbitrary dimensions and establish general properties of the holonomy algebras under some mild conditions on the generating element. We show that the first non-standard situation to look at appears in dimension 8 and concerns self-dual 4-forms. In this case complete structure results are obtained.

On length and product of harmonic forms in Kaehler geometry

Motivated by understanding the limiting case of a certain systolic inequality we study compact Riemannian manifolds having all harmonic 1-forms of constant length. We give complete characterizations as far as Kähler and hyperbolic geometries are concerned. In the second part of the paper, we give algebraic and topological obstructions to the existence of a geometrically 2-formal Kähler metric, at the level of the second cohomology group. A strong interaction with almost Kähler geometry is to be noted. In complex dimension 3, we list all the possible values of the second Betti number of a geometrically 2-formal Kähler metric.

Unit Killing Vector Fields on Nearly Kahler Manifolds

We study 6-dimensional nearly Kahler manifolds admitting a Killing vector field of unit length. In the compact case it is shown that up to a finite cover there is only one geometry possible, that of the 3--symmetric space $S^3 \times S^3$.

Algebraic reduction of certain almost Kaehler manifolds

We study almost Kaehler manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies the third curvature condition of Gray. We show that the study of manifolds within this class reduces to the study of a subclass having the property that the torsion of the first canonical Hermitian connection has the simplest possible algebraic form. This allows to understand the structure of the Kaehler nullity of an almost Kaehler manifold with parallel torsion.

The Length of Harmonic Forms on a Compact Riemannian Manifold

We study $n$ dimensional Riemanniann manifolds with harmonic forms of constant length and first Betti number equal to $n-1$ showing that they are 2-steps nilmanifolds with some special metrics. We also characterise, in terms of properties on the product of harmonic forms, the left invariant metrics among them. This allows us to clarify the case of equality in the stable isosytolic inequalities in that setting. We also discuss other values of the Betti number.

The structure of AK_2-manifolds

We study special almost Kaehler manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies the second curvature condition of Gray. It is shown that for such manifolds, the torsion of the first canonical Hermitian is parallel. This enables us to show that every AK_2-manifold has parallel torsion. Some applications of this result, concerning the existence of orthogonal almost Kaehler structures on spaces of constant curvature are given.

Torsion in almost Kaehler geometry

We study almost Kähler manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies the second curvature condition of Gray (shortly ${\cal{AK}}_2$). This condition is interpreted in terms of the first canonical Hermitian connection. It turns out that this condition forces the torsion of this connection to be parallel in directions orthogonal to the Kähler nullity of the almost complex structure. We prove a local structure result for ${\cal{AK}}_2$ manifolds, showing that the basic pieces are manifolds with parallel torsion and special almost Kähler manifolds, a class generalizing, to some algebraic extent, the class of 4-dimensional ${\cal{AK}}_2$-manifolds. In the case of parallel torsion, the Einstein condition and the reducibility of the canonical Hermitian connection is studied.

Nearly Kaehler geometry and Riemannian foliations

We consider strict and complete nearly Kaehler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. The holonomy representation of the canonical Hermitian connection is studied. We show that a strict and complete nearly Kaehler is locally a Riemannian product of homogenous nearly Kaehler spaces, twistor spaces over quaternionic Kaehler manifolds and 6-dimensional nearly Kaehler manifolds. As an application we obtain structure results for totally geodesic Riemannian foliations admitting a compatible Kaehler structure. Finally, we obtain a classification result for the homogenous case, reducing a conjecture of Wolf and Gray to its 6-dimensional form.

On nearly Kaehler geometry

We consider complete nearly Kähler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. We prove some metric properties of strict nearly Kähler manifolds and give a sufficient condition for the reducibility of the canonical Hermitian connection. A holonomic condition for a nearly Kähler manifold to be a twistor space over a quaternionic Kähler manifold is given. This enables us to give classification results in 10-dimensions.
