Operational signatures of exceptional quantum channels

Exceptional points (EPs) are usually introduced as defective degeneracies of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and, in fully open quantum dynamics, of Liouvillian generators. Here we formulate an operational theory of exceptional points that does not invoke a Hamiltonian or a master equation. The primitive dynamical object is a completely positive trace-preserving (CPTP) quantum channel $Φ$, applied an integer number $n$ of times, while physical data are probabilities $p_n^{\mathbf A}(x|ρ)$ associated with states $ρ$ and observables $\mathbf A$ having measurements results $x$. We define exceptional channels through nontrivial Jordan chains of $Φ$ and show that a Jordan block of order $m$ generates discrete polynomial-exponential terms with maximal degree $m-1$. This places the physics of exceptional points in contact with what can be directly measured in experiments.

Saturable nonlinearities in a driven-dissipative bosonic quantum battery

We investigate the charging of a nonlinear quantum battery consisting of a single bosonic mode subject to a saturable nonlinearity, coherent driving, and dissipation. In contrast to Kerr-type anharmonicities, the saturable interaction induces a bounded and nonlinear distortion of the energy spectrum, leading to a progressive increase in the density of energy levels. We analyze the time evolution of the energy and ergotropy of the battery by solving a Lindblad master equation and show that the nonlinear spectral structure significantly affects both transient charging behavior and steady-state properties. Our results reveal that, for a broad range of parameters, the saturable nonlinearity enhances the maximum stored energy and modifies the ergotropy generation in the presence of losses. The interplay between dissipation and bounded spectral nonlinearity provides a controllable mechanism to tune energy storage and work extraction in bosonic quantum batteries.

Latent symmetry in a minimal non-Hermitian trimer

We study a minimal non-Hermitian trimer with latent symmetry formed by a cospectral pair of sites embedded in a three-site network with nonreciprocal couplings. We show that cospectrality provides a structural latent-symmetry constraint, whereas exact dark-state decoupling requires an additional algebraic matching condition among the couplings. For a dark-state-compatible representative of this cospectral class, the model admits an exact decomposition into dark and bright sectors: the dark mode is spectrally isolated and retains a complex eigenvalue, while the bright sector reduces to an effective non-Hermitian dimer. For a suitable choice of parameters, this reduced subsystem becomes $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and exhibits partial spectral reality, with two real eigenvalues coexisting with the complex dark eigenvalue. At the critical point, the bright sector hosts an embedded second-order exceptional point, which renders the full trimer defective and gives rise to the characteristic Jordan-block dynamics. These results establish the non-Hermitian trimer as a minimal analytically solvable setting in which latent symmetry, sector-resolved $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, and exceptional-point physics naturally coexist.

Low coherence-induced resonance in double-layer structures having parity-time symmetry

We derive simple formulae for the transmittance $T$ and reflectance $R$ of Gaussian-Schell beams incident upon any stratified dielectric structure by using second-order classical coherence theory in the space-frequency picture. The formalism is applied to a particular structure consisting of a double-layer, with balanced gain and loss, satisfying the parity-time symmetry conditions. It is shown that sources with a low degree of spatial coherence, on the order of the wavelength, can induce large resonant peaks in the transmitted and reflected amplitudes. The resonance peaks vanish as the spatial coherence increases.

Light scattering from stationary $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric collections of particles

A potential scattering theory from deterministic and random $\mathcal{PT}$ collections of particles with gain and loss is introduced and the forms of their structure and pair-structure factors are elucidated. An example relating to light scattering from a random distribution of a pair of particles with gain and loss is considered.

Non-Hermitian spectral changes in the scattering of partially coherent radiation by periodic structures

The physical aspects of partially coherent radiation interacting with deterministic non-Hermitian periodic materials remain largely unexplored in the statistical optics literature. Here, we consider the scattering of partially coherent radiation by a deterministic periodic medium, symmetric under the simultaneous transformations of parity inversion and time reversal, that is, a parity-time (PT)-symmetric periodic medium. Taking into account light fluctuations, one is able to describe the spectrum changes on propagation and the influence of the coherence-driven angular divergence effect. The far-field spectral density profile is found to depend crucially on the loss/gain properties of the material, giving rise to unexpected and contrasting spectral diffraction profiles when compared to the Hermitian ones.

Stability boundaries of a Mathieu equation having PT symmetry

I have applied multiple-scale perturbation theory to a generalized complex $PT$-symmetric Mathieu equation in order to find the stability boundaries between bounded and unbounded solutions. The analysis suggests that the non-Hermitian parameter present in the equation can be used to control the shape and curvature of these boundaries. Although this was suggested earlier by several authors, analytic formulas for the boundary curves were not given. This paper is a first attempt to fill this gap in the theory.

Bragg-induced oscillations in non-PT complex photonic lattices

When a monochromatic beam of light propagates through a periodic structure with the incident angle satisfying the Bragg condition, its Fourier spatial spectra oscillates between the resonant modes situated on the edges of the Brillouin zones of the lattice with a nontrivial dynamics. We wish to study here these Bragg-induced oscillations in a specific non-PT periodic structure, that is, a periodic medium not invariant under the combined action of parity and time reversal symmetries. We compare our analytic results based on the expansion of the optical field in Bragg-resonant plane waves with direct numerical integration of the paraxial wave equation using a wide Gaussian beam as initial condition without assuming the shallow potential approximation. In particular, we wish to investigate under what conditions a mode trapping phenomenon can still be observed and to verify closely how the energy exchange between the spectral modes takes place during propagation in this more general class of potentials with arbitrary gain and loss profiles.

Ergoregion in Metamaterials Mimicking a Kerr Spacetime

We propose a simple singularity-free coordinate transformation that could be implemented in Maxwell's equations in order to simulate one aspect of a Kerr black hole. Kerr black holes are known to force light to rotate in a predetermined direction inside the ergoregion. By making use of cosmological analogies and the theoretical framework of transformation optics, we have designed a metamaterial that can make light behave as if it is propagating around a rotating cosmological massive body. We present numerical simulations involving incident Gaussian beams interacting with the materials to verify our predictions. The ergoregion is defined through the dispersion curve of the off-axis permittivities components.

Bragg-induced power oscillations in PT symmetric periodic photonic structures

We study Bragg-induced power oscillations in Fourier space between a pair of optical resonant transverse modes propagating through a periodic PT symmetric lattice, represented by a refractive index that includes gain and loss in a balanced way. Our results imply that the PT-symmetric system shows exceptionally rich phenomena absent in its Hermitian counterpart. It is demonstrated that the resonant modes exhibit unique characteristics such as Bragg power oscillations controlled via the PT symmetry, severe asymmetry in mode dynamics, and trapped enhanced transmission. We have also performed numerical simulations in (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions of propagating Gaussian beams to compare with analytical calculations developed under a two-waves model.
