Bayes posterior convergence for loss functions via almost additive Thermodynamic Formalism

Statistical inference can be seen as information processing involving input information and output information that updates belief about some unknown parameters. We consider the Bayesian framework for making inferences about dynamical systems from ergodic observations, where the Bayesian procedure is based on the Gibbs posterior inference, a decision process generalization of standard Bayesian inference where the likelihood is replaced by the exponential of a loss function. In the case of direct observation and almost-additive loss functions, we prove an exponential convergence of the a posteriori measures a limit measure. Our estimates on the Bayes posterior convergence for direct observation are related and extend those in a recent paper by K. McGoff, S. Mukherjee and A. Nobel. Our approach makes use of non-additive thermodynamic formalism and large deviation properties instead of joinings.

Genericity of historic behavior for maps and flows

We establish a sufficient condition for a continuous map, acting on a compact metric space, to have a Baire residual set of points exhibiting historic behavior (also known as irregular points). This criterion applies, for instance, to a minimal and non-uniquely ergodic map; to maps preserving two distinct probability measures with full support; to non-trivial homoclinic classes; to some non-uniformly expanding maps; and to partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two periodic points whose stable manifolds are dense, including Mañé and Shub examples of robustly transitive diffeomorphisms. This way, our unifying approach recovers a collection of known deep theorems on the genericity of the irregular set, for both additive and sub-additive potentials, and also provides a number of new applications.

Lyapunov non-typical behavior for linear cocycles through the lens of semigroup actions

The celebrated Oseledets theorem \cite{O}, building over seminal works of Furstenberg and Kesten on random products of matrices and random variables taking values on non-compact semisimple Lie groups \cite{FK,Furstenberg}, ensures that the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$-cocycles $(d\geqslant 2)$ over the shift are well defined for all points in a total probability set, ie, a full measure subset for all invariant probabilities. Given a locally constant $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$-valued cocycle we are interested both in the set of points on the shift space for which some Lyapunov exponent is not well defined, and in the set of directions on the projective space $\mathbf P \mathbb R^d$ along which there exists no well defined exponential growth rate of vectors for a certain product of matrices. We prove that if the semigroup generated by finitely many matrices in $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$ is not compact and is strongly projectively accessible then there exists a dense set of directions in $\mathbf P \mathbb R^d$ along which the Lyapunov exponent of a typical product of such matrices is not well defined. As a consequence, we deduce that the presence of Lyapunov non-typical behavior is prevalent among $SL(3,\mathbb R)$-valued hyperbolic cocycles. These results arise as a consequence of the more general description of the set of non-typical points for Cesàro averages of continuous observables and infinite paths in finitely generated semigroup actions by homeomorphisms on a compact metric space $X$ under a mild hitting times condition.

Exponential decay of correlations for Gibbs measures on attractors of Axiom A flows

In this paper we study the decay of correlations for Gibbs measures associated to codimension one Axiom A attractors for flows. We prove that a codimension one Axiom A attractors whose strong stable foliation is $C^{1+α}$ either have exponential decay of correlations with respect to all Gibbs measures associated to Hölder continuous potentials or their stable and unstable bundles are jointly integrable. As a consequence, there exist $C^1$-open sets of $C^3$-vector fields generating Axiom A flows having attractors so that: (i) mix exponentially with respect to equilibrium states associated with Hölder continuous potentials, (ii) their time-1 maps satisfy an almost sure invariance principle, and (iii) the growth of the number of closed orbits of length $T$ is described by the topological entropy of the attractor.

Thermodynamic formalism for random non-uniformly expanding maps

We develop a quenched thermodynamic formalism for a wide class of random maps with non-uniform expansion, where no Markov structure, no uniformly bounded degree or the existence of some expanding dynamics is required. We prove that every measurable and fibered $C^1$-potential at high temperature admits a unique equilibrium state which satisfies a weak Gibbs property, and has exponential decay of correlations. The arguments combine a functional analytic approach for the decay of correlations (using Birkhoff cone methods) and Carathéodory-type structures to describe the relative pressure of not necessary compact invariant sets in random dynamical systems. We establish also a variational principle for the relative pressure of random dynamical systems.

Convergence to a Lévy process in the Skorohod $M_1$ and $M_2$ topologies for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, including billiards with cusps

We prove convergence to a Levy process for a class of dispersing billiards with cusps. For such examples, convergence to a stable law was proved by Jung & Zhang. For the corresponding functional limit law, convergence is not possible in the usual Skorohod J_1 topology. Our main results yield elementary geometric conditions for convergence (i) in M_1, (ii) in M_2 but not M_1. In general, we show for a large class of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems how to deduce functional limit laws once convergence to the corresponding stable law is known.

Quenched and annealed equilibrium states for random Ruelle expanding maps and applications

In this paper we describe the spectral properties of semigroups of expanding maps acting on Polish spaces, considering both sequences of transfer operators along infinite compositions of dynamics and integrated transfer operators. We prove that there exists a limiting behaviour for such transfer operators, and that these semigroup actions admit equilibrium states with exponential decay of correlations and several limit theorems. The reformulation of these results in terms of quenched and annealed equilibrium states extend results by Baladi (1997) and Carvalho, Rodrigues & Varandas (2017), where the randomness is driven by a random walk and the phase space is assumed to be compact. Furthermore, we prove that the quenched equilibrium measures vary Hölder continuously and that the annealed equilibrium states can be recovered from the latter. Finally, we give some applications in the context of weighted non-autonomous iterated function systems, free semigroup actions and on the boundary of equilibria.

Generic homeomorphisms have full metric mean dimension

We prove that the upper metric mean dimension of $C^0$-generic homeomorphisms, acting on a compact smooth boundaryless manifold with dimension greater than one, coincides with the dimension of the manifold. In the case of continuous interval maps we also show that each level set for the metric mean dimension is $C^0$-dense in the space of continuous endomorphisms of $[0,1]$ with the uniform topology.

Ergodic optimization for hyperbolic flows and Lorenz attractors

In this article we consider the ergodic optimization for hyperbolic flows and Lorenz attractors with respect to both continuous and Holder continuous observables. In the context of hyperbolic flows we prove that a Baire generic subset of continuous observables have a unique maximizing measure, with full support and zero entropy, and that a Baire generic subset of Holder continuous observables admit a unique and periodic maximizing measure. These results rely on a relation between ergodic optimization for suspension semiflows and ergodic optimization for the Poincaré map with respect to induced observables, which allow us to reduce the problem for the context of maps. Using that singular-hyperbolic attractors are approximated by hyperbolic sets, we obtain related results for geometric Lorenz attractors.

A criterion for the triviality of the centralizer for vector fields and applications

In this paper we establish a criterion for the triviality of the $C^1$-centralizer for vector fields and flows. In particular we deduce the triviality of the centralizer at homoclinic classes of $C^r$ vector fields ($r\ge 1$). Furthermore, we show that the set of flows whose $C^1$-centralizer is trivial include: (i) $C^1$-generic volume preserving flows, (ii) $C^2$-generic Hamiltonian flows on a generic and full Lebesgue measure set of energy levels, and (iii) $C^1$-open set of non-hyperbolic vector fields (that admit a Lorenz attractor). We also provide a criterion for the triviality of the $C^0$-centralizer of continuous flows.

SRB measures for partially hyperbolic attractors of local diffeomorphisms

In the present paper we contribute to the thermodynamic formalism of partially hyperbolic attractors for local diffeomorphisms admitting an invariant stable bundle and a positively invariant cone field with non-uniform cone expansion at a positive Lebesgue measure set of points. These include the case of attractors for Axiom A endomorphisms and partially hyperbolic endomorphisms derived from Anosov. We prove these attractors have finitely many SRB measures, that these are hyperbolic, and that the SRB measure is unique provided the dynamics is transitive. Moreover, we show that the SRB measures are statistically stable (in the weak$^*$ topology) and that their entropy varies continuously with respect to the local diffeomorphism.

Volume lemmas for partially hyperbolic endomorphisms and applications

We consider partially hyperbolic attractors for non-singular endomorphisms admitting an invariant stable bundle and a positively invariant cone field with non-uniform cone expansion at a positive Lebesgue measure set of points. We prove volume lemmas for both Lebesgue measure on the topological basin of the attractor and the SRB measure supported on the attractor. As a consequence under a mild assumption we prove exponential large deviation bounds for the convergence of Birkhoff averages associated to continuous observables with respect to the SRB measure.

The gluing orbit property, uniform hyperbolicity and large deviations principles for semiflows

In this article we introduce a gluing orbit property, weaker than specification, for both maps and flows. We prove that flows with the $C^1$-robust gluing orbit property are uniformly hyperbolic and that every uniformly hyperbolic flow satisfies the gluing orbit property. We also prove a level-1 large deviations principle and a level-2 large deviations lower bound for for semiflows with the gluing orbit property. As a consequence we establish a level-1 large deviations principle for hyperbolic flows and every continuous observable, and also a level-2 large deviations lower bound. Finally, since many non-uniformly hyperbolic flows can be modeled as suspension flows we also provide criteria for such flows to satisfy uniform and non-uniform versions of the gluing orbit property.

The centralizer of Komuro-expansive flows and expansive R^d-actions

In this paper we study the centralizer of flows and $\mathbb R^d$-actions on compact Riemannian manifolds. We prove that the centralizer of every $C^\infty$ Komuro-expansive flow with non-ressonant singularities is trivial, meaning it is the smallest possible, and deduce there exists an open and dense subset of geometric Lorenz attractors with trivial centralizer. We show that $\mathbb R^d$-actions obtained as suspension of $\mathbb Z^d$-actions are expansive if and only if the same holds for the $\mathbb Z^d$-actions. We also show that homogeneous expansive $\mathbb R^d$-actions have quasi-trivial centralizers, meaning that it consists of orbit invariant, continuous linear reparametrizations of the $\mathbb R^d$-action. In particular, homogeneous Anosov $\mathbb R^d$-actions have quasi-trivial centralizer.
