Impurities induced vortex lattice melting and turbulence in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the impact of various impurities on rotating Bose-Einstein condensates confined within two-dimensional harmonic and optical lattice potentials. Without impurities, the rotating condensates display an organized square lattice pattern of vortices due to the influence of a square optical lattice. The introduction of impurity potentials disrupts this lattice structure, inducing a phase transition from an ordered state to a disordered state. Our analysis encompasses both static and dynamic types of impurities. The static impurities are implemented using a randomly varying potential with a spatially random amplitude. The transformation of the vortex lattice structure, in this case, relies on the strength and lattice constant of the impurity potential. For dynamical impurities, we employ a Gaussian obstacle that orbits around the condensate at a specific distance from its center. In this scenario, the vortex lattice melting occurs beyond a certain threshold radius and frequency of oscillation of the rotating obstacle. We characterize the melting of the vortex lattice due to impurities using various quantities, such as the structure factor and angular momentum. Notably, in the vortex-melted state, the angular momentum follows a power-law dependence with an exponent of approximately $1.73$, regardless of the type of impurity. Finally, we demonstrate the signature of the presence of a turbulent state within the vortex-melted state generated by both static and dynamical impurities.

Synchronizability in randomized weighted simplicial complexes

We present a formula for determining synchronizability in large, randomized and weighted simplicial complexes. This formula leverages eigenratios and costs to assess complete synchronizability under diverse network topologies and intensity distributions. We systematically vary coupling strengths (pairwise and three-body), degree and intensity distributions to identify the synchronizability of these simplicial complexes of the identical oscillators with natural coupling. We focus on randomized weighted connections with diffusive couplings and check synchronizability for different cases. For all these scenarios, eigenratios and costs reliably gauge synchronizability, eliminating the need for explicit connectivity matrices and eigenvalue calculations. This efficient approach offers a general formula for manipulating synchronizability in diffusively coupled identical systems with higher-order interactions simply by manipulating degrees, weights, and coupling strengths. We validate our findings with simplicial complexes of Rössler oscillators and confirm that the results are independent of the number of oscillators, connectivity components and distributions of degrees and intensities. Finally, we validate the theory by considering a real-world connection topology using chaotic Rössler oscillators.

Energy spectra and fluxes of turbulent rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in two dimensions

We investigate the scaling of the energy cascade in a harmonically trapped, turbulent, rotating Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in two dimensions. We achieve turbulence by injecting a localized perturbation into the condensate and gradually increasing its rotation frequency from an initial value to a maximum. The main characteristics of the resulting turbulent state depend on the initial conditions, rotation frequency, and ramp-up time. We analyze the energy and the fluxes of kinetic energy by considering initial profiles without vortices and with vortex lattices. In the case without initial vortices, we find the presence of Kolmogorov-like scaling ($k^{-5/3}$) of the incompressible kinetic energy in the inertial range. However, with initial vortex lattices, the energy spectrum follows Vinen scaling ($k^{-1}$) at transient iterations. For cases with high rotating frequencies, Kolmogorov-like scaling emerges at longer durations. We observe positive kinetic energy fluxes with both initial states across all final frequencies, indicating a forward cascade of incompressible and compressible kinetic energy.

Emergence of unstable avoided crossing in the collective excitations of spin-1 spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We present the analytical and numerical results on the collective excitation spectrum of quasi-one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. The collective excitation spectrum, using Bogoliubov-de-Gennes theory, reveals the existence of a diverse range of phases in the SO and Rabi ($k_L-Ω$) coupling plane. Based on eigenvalue of the excitation spectrum, we categorize the $k_L-Ω$ plane into three distinct regions. In region I, a stable mode with phonon-like excitations is observed. In region IIa, single and multi-band instabilities are noted with a gapped mode, while multi-band instability accompanied by a gapless mode between low-lying and first excited states is realized in region IIb, which also provides evidence of unstable avoided crossing between low-lying and first excited modes The gap between low-lying and first-excited states increases upon increasing the Rabi coupling while decreases upon increase of SO coupling. Using eigenvector analysis, we confirm the presence of the spin-dipole mode in the spin-like modes in Region II. We corroborate the nature of the collective excitation through real-time dynamical evolution of the ground state perturbed with the quench of the trap using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii model. This analysis suggests the presence of dynamical instability leading to the disappearance of the $0$-th component of the condensate. In Region III, mainly encompassing $Ω\sim 0$ and finite $k_L$, we observe phonon-like excitations in both the first excited and the low-lying state. The eigenvectors in this region reveal alternative in- and out-of-phase behaviours of the spin components. Numerical analysis reveals the presence of a super stripe phase for small Rabi coupling in this region, wherein the eigenvector indicates the presence of more complicated spin-like-density mixed modes.

Spectrum and quench-induced dynamics of spin-orbit coupled quantum droplets

We investigate the ground state and dynamics of one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled (SOC) quantum droplets within the extended Gross-Pitaevskii approach. As the SOC wavenumber increases, stripe droplet patterns emerge, with a flat-top background, for larger particle numbers. The surface energy decays following a power-law with respect to the interactions. At small SOC wavenumbers, a transition from Gaussian to flat-top droplets occurs for either a larger number of atoms or reduced intercomponent attraction. The excitation spectrum shows that droplets for relatively small SOC wavenumbers are stable, otherwise stripe droplets feature instabilities as a function of the particle number or the interactions. We also witness rich droplet dynamical features using velocity imprinting and abrupt changes in the intercomponent interaction or the SOC parameters. Characteristic responses include breathing oscillations, expansion, symmetric and asymmetric droplet fragmentation, admixtures of single and stripe droplet branches, and erratic spatial distributions suggesting the triggering of relevant instabilities. Our results reveal the controlled dynamical generation and stability properties of stripe droplets that should be detectable in current cold-atom experiments.

Quench induced chaotic dynamics of Anderson localized interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in one dimension

We study the effect of atomic interaction on the localization and the associated dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic optical lattice and random Gaussian disordered potentials. When the interactions are absent, the condensates exhibit localization, which weakens as we increase the interaction strength beyond a threshold value for both potential types. We inspect the localized and delocalized states by perturbing the system via quenching the interaction strength instantaneously to zero and studying the dynamics of the condensate, which we further corroborate using the out-of-time-order correlator. The temporal behaviour of the time correlator displays regular dynamics for the localized state, while it shows temporal chaos for the delocalized state. We confirm this dynamical behaviour by analyzing the power spectral density of the time correlator. We further identify that the condensate admits a quasiperiodic route to chaotic dynamics for both potentials. Finally, we present the variation of the maximal Lyapunov exponents for different nonlinearity and disorder strengths that have a positive value in the regime where the time correlator function shows chaotic behaviour. Through this, we establish the strong connection between the spatially delocalized state of the condensate and its temporal chaos.

Effect of beyond mean-field interaction on the structure and dynamics of the one-dimensional quantum droplet

We present simulation results of the ground state structure and dynamics of quantum droplets in one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled binary Bose-Einstein condensates. We have considered two cases for this analysis, such as (i) the mean-field term has a vanishingly small contribution utilizing the equal and opposite inter- and intraspecies interaction and (ii) unequal inter- and intraspecies interaction. For both cases, it shows remarkably different natures of the quantum droplet. In the former case, it exhibits bright sech-like droplet nature, while in the latter case, we find the flattened sech-like shape of the droplet. Further, we analyze the effect of velocity perturbation on the dynamics in both cases. For the first case, we find a systematic change from the solitonic droplet nature to the breathing droplet which finally has a moving droplet feature upon increasing the velocity. However, the second case shows similar dynamics except having more dynamically stable features than the first. Finally, we present various dynamics that ensued in the quantum droplet due to the quenching of the interaction parameters, coupling parameters or allowing the droplet to undergo collisions.

OpenMP Fortran programs for solving the time-dependent dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this paper we present Open Multi-Processing (OpenMP) Fortran 90/95 versions of previously published numerical programs for solving the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation including the contact interaction in one, two and three spatial dimensions. The atoms are considered to be polarized along the z axis and we consider different cases, e.g., stationary and non-stationary solutions of the GP equation for a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in one dimension (along x and z axes), two dimensions (in x-y and x-z planes), and three dimensions. The algorithm used is the split-step semi-implicit Crank-Nicolson scheme for imaginary- and real-time propagation to obtain stationary states and BEC dynamics, respectively, as in the previous version [R. Kishor Kumar et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 195, 117 (2015)]. These OpenMP versions have significantly reduced execution time in multicore processors.

Dynamics of quantum soliton in Lee-Huang-Yang spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We present the numerical results of the structure and dynamics of the self-bound ground state arising solely because of the presence of beyond mean field quantum fluctuation in spin-orbit coupled binary Bose-Einstein condensates in one dimension. Depending upon spin-obit (SO) and Rabi couplings, we observe that the ground state exhibits either quantum-bright (plane) or quantum-stripe soliton nature. We find an analytical soliton solution for non-zero SO coupling that matches quite well with the numerical results. Further, we investigate the dynamical stability of these solitons by adopting three protocols, such as (i) adding initial velocity to each component, (ii) quenching the SO and Rabi coupling parameters at initial and finite time, and (iii) allowing collision between the two spin-components by giving equal and opposite direction velocity to them. Many interesting dynamical features of the solitons, like, multi-fragmented, repelling, and breathing in time and space-time, are observed. For given Rabi coupling frequency, the breathing frequency of the soliton increases upon the increase in SO coupling, attaining a maximum at the critical SO coupling where the phase transition from the bright to stripe soliton occurs. We observe that the maximum breathing frequency exhibits power law dependence on the Rabi coupling frequency with an exponent $\sim 0.16$.

CUDA programs for solving the time-dependent dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation in an anisotropic trap

In this paper we present new versions of previously published numerical programs for solving the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation including the contact interaction in two and three spatial dimensions in imaginary and in real time, yielding both stationary and non-stationary solutions. New versions of programs were developed using CUDA toolkit and can make use of Nvidia GPU devices. The algorithm used is the same split-step semi-implicit Crank-Nicolson method as in the previous version (R. Kishor Kumar et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 195, 117 (2015)), which is here implemented as a series of CUDA kernels that compute the solution on the GPU. In addition, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) library used in the previous version is replaced by cuFFT library, which works on CUDA-enabled GPUs. We present speedup test results obtained using new versions of programs and demonstrate an average speedup of 12 to 25, depending on the program and input size.

OpenMP, OpenMP/MPI, and CUDA/MPI C programs for solving the time-dependent dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We present new versions of the previously published C and CUDA programs for solving the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation in one, two, and three spatial dimensions, which calculate stationary and non-stationary solutions by propagation in imaginary or real time. Presented programs are improved and parallelized versions of previous programs, divided into three packages according to the type of parallelization. First package contains improved and threaded version of sequential C programs using OpenMP. Second package additionally parallelizes three-dimensional variants of the OpenMP programs using MPI, allowing them to be run on distributed-memory systems. Finally, previous three-dimensional CUDA-parallelized programs are further parallelized using MPI, similarly as the OpenMP programs. We also present speedup test results obtained using new versions of programs in comparison with the previous sequential C and parallel CUDA programs. The improvements to the sequential version yield a speedup of 1.1 to 1.9, depending on the program. OpenMP parallelization yields further speedup of 2 to 12 on a 16-core workstation, while OpenMP/MPI version demonstrates a speedup of 11.5 to 16.5 on a computer cluster with 32 nodes used. CUDA/MPI version shows a speedup of 9 to 10 on a computer cluster with 32 nodes.

Fortran and C programs for the time-dependent dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation in an anisotropic trap

Many of the static and dynamic properties of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) are usually studied by solving the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which is a nonlinear partial differential equation for short-range atomic interaction. More recently, BEC of atoms with long-range dipolar atomic interaction are used in theoretical and experimental studies. For dipolar atomic interaction, the GP equation is a partial integro-differential equation, requiring complex algorithm for its numerical solution. Here we present numerical algorithms for both stationary and non-stationary solutions of the full three-dimensional (3D) GP equation for a dipolar BEC, including the contact interaction. We also consider the simplified one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) GP equations satisfied by cigar- and disk-shaped dipolar BECs. We employ the split-step Crank-Nicolson method with real- and imaginary-time propagations, respectively, for the numerical solution of the GP equation for dynamic and static properties of a dipolar BEC. The atoms are considered to be polarized along the z axis and we consider ten different cases, e.g., stationary and non-stationary solutions of the GP equation for a dipolar BEC in 1D (along x and z axes), 2D (in x-y and x-z planes), and 3D, and we provide working codes in Fortran 90/95 and C for these ten cases (twenty programs in all). We present numerical results for energy, chemical potential, root-mean-square sizes and density of the dipolar BECs and, where available, compare them with results of other authors and of variational and Thomas-Fermi approximations.

Influence of Rashba spin-orbit and Rabi couplings on the miscibility and ground state phases of binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the miscibility properties and ground state phases of two-component spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a harmonic trap with strong axial confinement. By numerically solving the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations in the two-dimensional setting, we analyze the SO-coupled BECs for two possible permutations of the intra- and interspecies interactions, namely (i) weak intra- and weak interspecies interactions (W-W) and (ii) weak intra- and strong interspecies interactions (W-S). Considering the density overlap integral as a miscibility order parameter, we investigate the miscible-immiscible transition by varying the coupling parameters. We obtain various ground state phases, including plane wave, half quantum vortex, elongated plane wave, and different stripe wave patterns for W-W interactions. For finite Rabi coupling, an increase in SO coupling strength leads to the transition from the fully miscible to the partially miscible state. We also characterize different ground states in the coupling parameter space using the root mean square sizes of the condensate. The spin density vector for the ground state phases exhibits density, quadrupole and dipole like spin polarizations. For the W-S interaction, in addition to that observed in the W-W case, we witness semi vortex, mixed mode, and shell-like immiscible phases. We notice a wide variety of spin polarizations, such as density, dipole, quadrupole, symbiotic, necklace, and stripe-like patterns for the W-S case. A detailed investigation in the coupling parameter space indicates immiscible to miscible state phase transition upon varying the Rabi coupling for a fixed Rashba SO coupling. The critical Rabi coupling for the immiscible-miscible phase transition decreases upon increasing the SO coupling strength.

Spiral wave chimera-like transient dynamics in three-dimensional grid of diffusive ecological systems

In the present article, we demonstrate the emergence and existence of the spiral wave chimera-like transient pattern in coupled ecological systems, composed of prey-predator patches, where the patches are connected in a three-dimensional medium through local diffusion. We explore the transition scenarios among the several collective dynamical behaviors together with transient spiral wave chimera-like states and investigate the long time behavior of these states. The transition from the transient spiral chimera-like pattern to the long time synchronized or desynchronized pattern appears through the deformation of the incoherent region of the spiral core. We discuss the transient dynamics under the influence of the species diffusion at different time instants. By calculating the instantaneous strength of incoherence of the populations, we estimate the duration of the transient dynamics characterized by the persistence of the chimera-like spatial coexistence of coherent and incoherent patterns over the spatial domain. We generalize our observations on the transient dynamics in three-dimensional grid of diffusive ecological systems by considering two different prey-predator systems.

Effect of Rashba spin-orbit and Rabi couplings on the excitation spectrum of binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We present the collective excitation spectrum analysis of binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings in a quasi-two-dimensional system. In particular, we investigate the role of SO and Rabi coupling strengths in determining the dynamical stability of the coupled BECs using Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory. Using the eigenergy of BdG spectrum, we confirm the existence of phonon, roton, and maxon modes with weak repulsive intra- and inter-species contact interactions. The depth of the minimum corresponding to the roton mode depends strongly on the coupling strength. We find that the increase of the SO coupling leads to instability, while the increase in the Rabi coupling stabilizes the system. Also the eigenvectors of BdG spectrum indicates the presence of density like mode in the stable regime and spin like modes in unstable regimes. A phase diagram demonstrating the stability regime in the plane of SO and Rabi coupling strengths is obtained. Finally, we complement the observation of the excitation spectrum with the direct numerical simulation results of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Amplitude mediated spiral chimera pattern in a nonlinear reaction-diffusion system

Formation of diverse patterns in spatially extended reaction-diffusion systems is an important aspect of study which is pertinent to many chemical and biological processes. Of special interest is the peculiar phenomenon of chimera state having spatial coexistence of coherent and incoherent dynamics in a system of identically interacting individuals. In the present article, we report the emergence of various collective dynamical patterns while considering a system of prey-predator dynamics in presence of a two-dimensional diffusive environment. Particularly, we explore the observance of four distinct categories of spatial arrangements among the species, namely spiral wave, spiral chimera, completely synchronized oscillations, and oscillation death states in a broad region of the diffusion-driven parameter space. Emergence of amplitude mediated spiral chimera states displaying drifted amplitudes and phases in the incoherent subpopulation is detected for parameter values beyond both Turing and Hopf bifurcations. Transition scenarios among all these distinguishable patterns are numerically demonstrated for a wide range of the diffusion coefficients which reveal that the chimera states arise during the transition from oscillatory to steady state dynamics. Furthermore, we characterize the occurrence of each of the recognizable patterns by estimating the strength of incoherent subpopulations in the two-dimensional space.

Spin-1 spin-orbit- and Rabi-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate solver

We present OpenMP versions of FORTRAN programs for solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a harmonically trapped three-component spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in one (1D) and two (2D) spatial dimensions with or without spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings. Several different forms of SO coupling are included in the programs. We use the split-step Crank-Nicolson discretization for imaginary- and real-time propagation to calculate stationary states and BEC dynamics, respectively. The imaginary-time propagation programs calculate the lowest-energy stationary state. The real-time propagation programs can be used to study the dynamics. The simulation input parameters are provided at the beginning of each program. The programs propagate the condensate wave function and calculate several relevant physical quantities. Outputs of the programs include the wave function, energy, root-mean-square sizes, different density profiles (linear density for the 1D program, linear and surface densities for the 2D program). The imaginary- or real-time propagation can start with an analytic wave function or a pre-calculated numerical wave function. The imaginary-time propagation usually starts with an analytic wave function, while the real-time propagation is often initiated with the previously calculated converged imaginary-time wave function.
