A Quick Review on Recent Trends in 3D Point Cloud Data Compression Techniques and the Challenges of Direct Processing in 3D Compressed Domain

Automatic processing of 3D Point Cloud data for object detection, tracking and segmentation is the latest trending research in the field of AI and Data Science, which is specifically aimed at solving different challenges of autonomous driving cars and getting real time performance. However, the amount of data that is being produced in the form of 3D point cloud (with LiDAR) is very huge, due to which the researchers are now on the way inventing new data compression algorithms to handle huge volumes of data thus generated. However, compression on one hand has an advantage in overcoming space requirements, but on the other hand, its processing gets expensive due to the decompression, which indents additional computing resources. Therefore, it would be novel to think of developing algorithms that can operate/analyse directly with the compressed data without involving the stages of decompression and recompression (required as many times, the compressed data needs to be operated or analyzed). This research field is termed as Compressed Domain Processing. In this paper, we will quickly review few of the recent state-of-the-art developments in the area of LiDAR generated 3D point cloud data compression, and highlight the future challenges of compressed domain processing of 3D point cloud data.

Feasibility of Principal Component Analysis in hand gesture recognition system

Nowadays actions are increasingly being handled in electronic ways, instead of physical interaction. From earlier times biometrics is used in the authentication of a person. It recognizes a person by using a human trait associated with it like eyes (by calculating the distance between the eyes) and using hand gestures, fingerprint detection, face detection etc. Advantages of using these traits for identification are that they uniquely identify a person and cannot be forgotten or lost. These are unique features of a human being which are being used widely to make the human life simpler. Hand gesture recognition system is a powerful tool that supports efficient interaction between the user and the computer. The main moto of hand gesture recognition research is to create a system which can recognise specific hand gestures and use them to convey useful information for device control. This paper presents an experimental study over the feasibility of principal component analysis in hand gesture recognition system. PCA is a powerful tool for analyzing data. The primary goal of PCA is dimensionality reduction. Frames are extracted from the Sheffield KInect Gesture (SKIG) dataset. The implementation is done by creating a training set and then training the recognizer. It uses Eigen space by processing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the images in training set. Euclidean distance with the threshold value is used as similarity metric to recognize the gestures. The experimental results show that PCA is feasible to be used for hand gesture recognition system.

A review on cloud robotics based frameworks to solve simultaneous localization and mapping (slam) problem

Cloud Robotics is one of the emerging area of robotics. It has created a lot of attention due to its direct practical implications on Robotics. In Cloud Robotics, the concept of cloud computing is used to offload computational extensive jobs of the robots to the cloud. Apart from this, additional functionalities can also be offered on run to the robots on demand. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is one of the computational intensive algorithm in robotics used by robots for navigation and map building in an unknown environment. Several Cloud based frameworks are proposed specifically to address the problem of SLAM, DAvinCi, Rapyuta and C2TAM are some of those framework. In this paper, we presented a detailed review of all these framework implementation for SLAM problem.

Occultation observation to probe the turbulence scale size in the plasma tail of comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3-B

We present the occultation observation of compact radio source B0019-000 through the plasma tail of comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3-B. The observation was made with the Ooty Radio Telescope at 326.5 MHz on 2006 May 26, when the plasma tail of the comet was in front of this source. The scintillation was found to be increased significantly for the target source compared to that of a control source. The intensity fluctuation power spectra show both steepening at high spatial scales and excess power at low spatial scales. This observation can be attributed to the turbulence in the comet plasma tail. A two-regime plasma turbulence can explain the time-evolution of the power spectrum during the occultation observation.
