Pro-$\mathcal{C}$ groups acting on profinite trees

We provide necessary conditions for pro-$\mathcal{C}$ subgroups to embed into free profinite products, where $\mathcal{C}$ is a variety of finite groups that does not contain all finite groups. Under suitable hypotheses, we extend this result to profinite groups acting $k$-acylindrically on profinite trees. Finally, we show that these results can be applied to important classes of profinite groups.

Profinite genus of free products with finite amalgamation

A finitely generated residually finite group $G$ is an $\widehat{OE}$-group if any action of its profinite completion $\widehat G$ on a profinite tree with finite edge stabilizers admits a global fixed point. In this paper, we study the profinite genus of free products $G_1*_HG_2$ of $\widehat{OE}$-groups $G_1,G_2$ with finite amalgamation $H$. Given such $G_1,G_2,H$ we give precise formulas for the number of isomorphism classes of $G_1*_HG_2$ and of its profinite completion. We compute the genus of $G_1*_HG_2$ and list various situations when the formula for the genus simplifies.

Relatively projective pro-$p$ groups

It is known that the Kurosh Subgroup Theorem does not hold for pro-$p$ groups of big cardinality. However, a subgroup $G$ of a free pro-$p$ product is projective relative to the Kurosh family of subgroups. In this paper we prove the converse of this fact.

The profinite completion of accessible groups

We introduce a class $\A$ of finitely generated residually finite accessible groups with some natural restriction on one-ended vertex groups in their JSJ-decompositions. We prove that the profinite completion of groups in $\A$ almost detects its JSJ-decomposition and compute the genus of free products of groups in $\A$.

On pro-$p$ analogues of limit groups via extensions of centralizers

We begin a study of a pro-$p$ analogue of limit groups via extensions of centralizers and call $\mathcal{L}$ this new class of pro-$p$ groups. We show that the pro-$p$ groups of $\mathcal{L}$ have finite cohomological dimension, type $FP_{\infty}$ and non-positive Euler characteristic. Among the group theoretic properties it is proved that they are free-by-(torsion-free poly -procyclic) and if non-abelian do not have a finitely generated non-trivial normal subgroup of infinite index. Furthermore it is shown that every 2 generated pro-$p$ group in the class $\mathcal{L}$ is either free pro-$p$ or abelian.
